Americas wild horses are protected by
an act of Congress as living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West that contribute to the diversity of life forms within the Nation and enrich the lives of the American people.
from public lands in the West in order
to make room for taxpayer-subsidized, commercial livestock grazing. The BLM authorizes privately-owned livestock to outnumber wild horses on BLM-managed lands by at least 50-1.
The 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses
and Burros Act protects these animals from capture, branding, harassment, or death, but a decades-old federal program has turned the law on its head.
The federal government now warehouses
more mustangs in holding facilities than are left free in the wild. Once, millions of wild horses roamed the West. Today, fewer than 50,000 are left.

Management (BLM) rounds up mustangs by the tens of thousands, removing them

AMERICAS WILD HORSES ARE UNDER ATTACK
Federal roundups terrorize wild horses in miles-long helicopter stampedes over rugged terrain in extreme weather conditions. Once captured, the mustangs are crammed into pens, processed, and shipped off to holding facilities, where the majority are confined for life.
Today, Americas wild horses are
making their last stand, and the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign is standing with them to preserve these national icons for generations to come.
Wild horses live in tightly-knit family
bands; lead stallions fiercely defend their mares and foals. The Interior Department Bureau of Land Management (BLM) roundups destroy these families; foals are forever torn from their mothers and mares are forcibly removed from their stallions.
The American Wild Horse Preservation
Campaign is a coalition of horse advocacy, conservation, animal welfare, and historic preservation organizations working to stop the roundups and implement a cost-effective and humane government management policy that keeps wild horses on the Western range where they belong.
Americas wild horses have survived for
centuries in harsh desert environments made more hostile by ranchers who view them as pests and want them removed from public lands. The BLM roundups are decimating remaining wild horse herds and wasting tax dollars.
