ANSYS Workshop 2

Structural Analysis

Brought to you by APSS

Agenda
Learning Objectives:
Engineering Data
Selecting materials from the ANSYS Material Library

Analysis
Using the Frictionless boundary condition
Applying the Pressure boundary condition
Extracting result using Direction Deformation

Selecting Analysis System

Next, double click the

Engineering Data Cell

Double click static structural in

the Analysis section

Accessing ANSYS Material Library

Click this icon to access the
ANSYS material library

Selecting Material
Click General
Materials

Next, select Aluminum

Alloy and click the + sign
to include it in the Project

Units
One of the most useful capability
of ANSYS is the Units assignment

Deleting Redundant Data

Right click Structural Steel and
delete this material

Returning To Project

Next, click this icon to return to the

main workbench environment

Type in the values of Youngs

modulus and Poissons ratio to match
those stated in the problem

Importing Geometry
Right click the Geometry Cell,
hover the mouse over Import
geometry and select Browse

Importing Geometry

Select the design

file named Ex 2.5

Entering Mechanical Environment

Right click the Model Cell and select

edit.
Or double click the Model cell

Assigning Property To Model

Click Geometry in the Project Tree

Assigning Property To Model

In the Details Window that opens, click the

Material cell and assign aluminum alloy to
the solid model

Applying Frictionless Support B.C.

Right click Static Structural in the Project Tree and
select Frictionless Support

Applying Frictionless Support B.C.

Click the Geometry Cell in the Details Windows

Next, hover your mouse just below the Y axis in the

triad and when you see the direction vector
indicating negative Y-axis, click it

Applying Frictionless Support B.C.

Click the face (this is the bottom face of the solid

model), then click apply in the Detals Window

Applying Frictionless Support B.C.

Click the small blue dot to return to isometric view

Applying Frictionless Support B.C.

Applying Pressure B.C.

Right click Static Structure in the Project

Tree and select Pressure

Applying Pressure B.C.

Click the face shown, after it turns green

click the apply button in Details Window

Applying Pressure B.C.

Applying Pressure B.C.

Click the Define By cell in the Details

Window and select Components

Applying Pressure B.C.

In the problem the stress in the

direction of positive x-axis is + 84 MPa,
make sure that the unit is correct .
Type this value in the X component

Applying Pressure B.C.

Repeat the same procedure to achieve

the stress distributed as shown

Adding Directional Deformation

Right click Solution in the

Project Tree and select
Directional Deformation

Adding Directional Deformation

Adding Directional Deformation

2. Click the Edge Selection

filter

1. Click the Geometry

cell in the Details
Window.

4. Click apply

5. Make sure X- axis is selected in the

orientation

3. Select the two edges

along the x axis (using the
Ctlr key)

Adding Directional Deformation

Adding Directional Deformation

Right click the Directional Deformation and

select Rename. Then Rename it AB, as given in
problem.

Adding Directional Deformation

Adding Directional Deformation

1. Repeat the same procedure of

applying Directional Deformation to the
line along Z-axis, and Rename it later to
CD.
Make sure that the orientation is Z-axis

2. Repeat the same procedure for the vertical edge and rename it to
thickness
Make sure that orientation this time is Y axis

Solving

Right click Solution and click Solve
