Workbench Environment

ANSYS Workbench Environment window

Selecting Analysis System

Double click Static

Structural

Engineering Data
2. Double click Engineering Data
Cell

1. Rename the template to remind

yourself about the analysis

Changing Data

1. Click Structural Steel

2. Select Poisson Ratio value

and make it zero, as this is not
required in the problem

Adding A New Material

Click the empty cell

below Structural Steel
to add a new material

Type in Brass as it is the

second material required in
the problem

Adding Properties

Double click Density

from Physical Properties

Adding Properties

Double click Isotropic Elasticity from

Linear Elastic

Returning Back To Project

2. Click this icon to return to

the main window

1. Type in the values of

Density, Youngs Modulus
and 0 for Poissons Ratio
Make sure the unit is
changed to psi before
entering the Youngs
Modulus

Importing Geometry

Right click Geometry Cell

and select Browse

Importing Geometry

Select the Design file

shown

Importing Geometry

GUI of Design Modeler

This slide just to give you a look at the
GUI of the Design Modeler that is used
to create models in ANSYS

Saving The Project

Now is a good time to save the project

Entering Mechanical Environment

Right click the Model Cell and select Edit
Or
Double click the Model Cell

Assigning Property To Model

Click Geometry in the Tree Outline

Assigning Property To Model

Click Brass

Assigning Property To Model

And in the Details Window,

change the material
assignment to Brass

Adding Fixed Support B.C.

Right Click Static Structural and
select Fixed Support

Adding Fixed Support B.C.

Hover your mouse at the triad and move it

along Z-axis until you see a direction
vector pointing towards the negative z
axis.
Click the vector

Adding Fixed Support B.C.

1. Click the face selection filter

3. Click Apply in the Details Window

2. Select the two faces (using the Ctrl key)

These would form the fixed base of the
model

Adding Fixed Support B.C.

Adding Displacement B.C.

1. Right click Static Structural and select
Displacement

2. Click the Z axis vector

Adding Displacement B.C.

1. Click face selection

filter

3. Click Apply

2. Select the two faces shown

(using Ctrl key)

4. Along the Z component, enter the value of -6e-3 in

Adding Displacement B.C.

Click the blue dot to return

to isometric view

Adding Displacement B.C.

Adding A Probe For Result

Right click Solution and select

Force Reaction

Adding A Probe For Result

Select the Fixed Support boundary

condition

Adding Normal Stress Evaluation

Right click Solution and select

Normal Stress

Adding Normal Stress Evaluation

Right click Normal Stress and select Rename

to change it to Steel core
This is to help us identify the location of
stress

Adding Normal Stress Evaluation

Adding Normal Stress Evaluation

1. Click the body selection

filter icon

3. Select the central

body
4. Click Apply

2. Click Geometry cell

Adding Normal Stress Evaluation
