COURSE DESCRIPTION: Architectural Drawing and Design is a course that introduces students to the basic
terminology, concepts, and principles of architectural design. Emphasis is placed on house designs, floor plans, roof
designs, elevations (interior and exterior), schedules, and foundations. This course is designed to familiarize the students
with the fundamentals of quality design and the construction of residential and commercial models utilizing mechanical
drafting, CADD and physical models. Technology Student Association (TSA) activities can be incorporated throughout
instructional strategies developed for the course.

COURSE GOALS: Georgia Performance Standards:

1. Students will identify components related to the design process.


 Identify historical influences that helped shape today's home styles.
 Discuss current trends in architecture.
 Recognize basic house designs.
 Map traffic circulation for maximum efficiency.
 Explain how building codes and zoning ordinances affect design.
 Identify the drawings required for a set of construction documents or plans.
 Read architectural blueprints.
 Measure using an architect’s scale.

2. Students will prepare residential floor plans.


 Contrast basic areas of a residential structure.
 Implement important design principles for the basic areas of a residential structure.
 Draw dimensioned floor plans using appropriate symbols and conventions.

3. Students will demonstrate knowledge and terminology of a variety of architectural elements (These include:
stairs, fireplaces, doors, windows, floor, wall, ceiling and roof systems).
 Identify the basic types of residential stairs.
 Compare the various types of fireplaces appropriate for a residence.
 Identify the parts of a standard masonry fireplace and chimney.
 Compare types of windows and doors used in a residential structure.
 Identify the members of a typical frame wall.
 Describe the components of a floor system.
 Identify and draw various styles of roof designs.
 Identify basic components of a modern roof system.

4. Students will prepare elevations for residential drawings.


 Explain the purpose of elevations.
 Draw interior elevations.
 Draw exterior elevations.

5. Students will prepare schedules.
 Explain the purpose of schedules on a set of architectural drawings.
 Draw window, door, and finish schedules.

6. Students will prepare foundation plans.


 Explain the purpose of foundation plans.
 Identify different foundation systems and terminology.
 Draw and dimension foundation plans.

7. Students will prepare electrical plans, plumbing plans, and climate control plans.
 Describe an electrical plan and identify its features.
 Draw an electrical plan using appropriate symbols and conventions.
 Describe a plumbing plan and identify its features.
 Draw a plumbing plan using appropriate symbols and conventions.
 Describe a climate control plan and identify its features.
 Draw a climate control plan using appropriate symbols and conventions.

8. Students will prepare sections and details.


 Explain the purpose of sections and details.
 Draw a variety of detail drawings.

9. Students will prepare site plans.


 Understand general codes related to site planning.
 Identify the various features shown on a typical plot plans.
 Draw a site plan for a structure.

10. Students will create a presentation for a building.


 Identify the purpose of architectural presentations.
 Create a presentation using various methods.
 Construct a scaled model for a structure.

11. Students will develop leadership and interpersonal problem-solving skills through participation in co-curricular
activities associated with the Technology Student Association
 Demonstrate effective communication skills.

 Demonstrate cooperation and understanding with persons who are ethnically and culturally diverse.

EVALUATION: The final grade for this class will be based on the following items:

1. Drafting Assignments/Projects 40 %

6. Written Final Exam 10 %

GRADE SCALE:
A 90-100 excellence
B 80-89 above average performance
C 74-79 average performance
D 70-73 minimum acceptable achievement
F Below 70 failure to achieve

Please note that students will not receive a numerical grade over 100, because this is not an advanced placement course.

SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS: In order for superior work to be produced you may want to invest in special drafting
equipment. The items include:
•.3, .5, .7, & .9 mm mechanical pencils with replacement lead
•a soft white vinyl eraser
•a box of drafting dots
MAKE-UP WORK:
When a student has an excused absence:
- S/he has five (5) school days in which to complete and turn in any missed work.
- It is the student's responsibility to see that this is done at the teacher’s convenience, outside the regular class period.
- If the work is not completed within the five (5) days, the student receives a zero (0) for the incomplete work.
- The five-day rule does NOT apply to long-standing due dates on assignment or projects.
- In long-standing assignments, it is generally expected that the student would turn in the assignments on his/her first
day back to school.
- Students absent due to suspension may only make up major assignments (tests, major quizzes, projects, reports, etc.).
When a student has an unexcused absence:
- The student may wish to follow the late work policies to earn some credit.

LATE WORK:
When a student does not complete and/or turn in and assignment on time:
- S/he has the option of completing the missing work and turning it in within three (3) school days to earn 90% of the
maximum credit.
- The three-day rule does NOT apply to long term projects.
- It is solely the responsibility of the student to complete and turn in the late work. The teacher will not remind the
student or ask for the work.
- Any late work not turned in by the student within three (3) days will be recorded as a zero (0) by the teacher.

CLASS RULES AND EXPECTATIONS: Every student will be expected to conduct him or herself in a manner that does
not interfere with the learning process. Students that interfere with the ability of the teacher to teach and other student's
ability to learn will be dealt with swiftly. All specific Technology Lab rules, and the general school rules listed in the local
school Student/Parent Handbook, will be enforced! The following are important teacher expectations:
 Respect everyone
 Be positive
 Give 100% effort
 Don’t talk while the teacher is talking.

Just as you expect honesty and integrity from the instructor, I expect the same from you.

CONSEQUENCES: The teacher is the primary agent in the school to aid in reconciling their behavior with school rules.
The assistant principal will intervene when conduct or behavior does not improve or when conduct is a major disruption.
The following steps will generally be utilized:
1. Verbal warning
2. Student conference & 15-Minute detention
3. Parent phone call & 30-Minute detention
4. 45-Minute detention
5. Referral to the discipline administrator

TARDY POLICY: The school -wide policy STAMP (Student Tardy Accountability Management Program) will be used.
All students should report to the STAMP table in the Curriculum Office in building D during the first 10 minutes of class
when tardy. The following consequences are implemented at Parkview:
1-3 Warning 4-5 One administrative detention
6 Two administrative detentions 7 Saturday school
8-9 (ISS) In-school suspension 10 (ISS) In-school suspension (2 days)
11+ (OSS) Out-of-School suspension/Parent conference
