DATE:

September 2013

SUBJECT:

Installation guide for SolidWorks Electrical 2014

ABSTRACT:

Guide on installing the SolidWorks Electrical 2014

This guide is written for SolidWorks Electrical 2014 standalone installation.

Before loading any software, you should always log in with full administrative permissions and disable
your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs. The installation process has a Java component, be sure your
operating system has been updated with Windows Updates recently to avoid any compatibility issues with
the installer.
A SolidWorks standalone seat can only be activated twice. If you want to move a license to a new
system, or from one machine to another, you must transfer that license back beforehand. See the
license agreement if you are unsure about this policy.
This is not a troubleshooting guide. If you have any technical issues with SolidWorks, please contact
Hawk Ridge Systems technical support.
This document is only to be distributed and used by Hawk Ridge Systems customers. Any other use is
prohibited.

Before Installation
Hawk Ridge Systems highly recommends taking a moment before installing SolidWorks and checking that
you are ready to load your new software. Follow these steps to have a better experience while running
SolidWorks:
1. Check hardware compatibility.

Login to www.solidworks.com, click the Login link at the top of the page and login to the
customer portal. In the self service area, there are links to check video card compatibility as well
as minimum system requirements.

You can also see Hawk Ridge Systems recommended hardware by logging into
https://support.hawkridgesys.com/home and reviewing our hardware recommendations. You
can see brand name makes and models we suggest for best performance. We also have a more
comprehensive hardware guide that discusses all types of considerations for your system.

2. Check Operating System Compatibility.

Here is a checklist of compatible operating systems for this version of SolidWorks. You can find
the latest version of this under the system requirements page of www.solidworks.com after you
login.

Be sure you are on the latest version of your operating system. You will want to check for, and
install any Windows updates before installing SolidWorks.

Vista and Windows 7 Professional versions are all supported platforms. Vista and 7 Home Editions
are not supported. SolidWorks 2014 will not install on a Windows XP or Vista machine.

3. Check hard drive for space and overhead.

In Windows Explorer, go to My Computer and check the destination drive (by default the C
drive). Right-click this drive and choose Properties to see it has the Estimated installation size
(7.76 GB in this case) for the full program.
Also be sure this drive has at least 15% free space. A full disk may cause out-of-memory
crashes and cannot be defragged to optimize performance.

4. Confirm communitys working version.

SolidWorks is not backwards compatible, meaning older versions cannot open files from newer
versions. Be sure workmates, customers or vendors are all on the same version (i.e. SolidWorks
2013 or SolidWorks 2014) you are loading. There is a limited exception to this starting with
2013. Files created using SolidWorks 2013 and above can be opened with the previous version
with limited functionality.

5. Back-up your data.

It is highly recommended that you archive your environment prior to performing any
upgrades. This will save a copy of all existing project, components, symbols, etc. into one
compressed ZIP file. To do so, click the Archive Environment button within the SolidWorks
Electrical application on a client machine.
If you have a shared location containing existing SolidWorks files, it is recommended that you
make backup copies of these files.

6. Uninstall previous version of SolidWorks. It is recommended that after you have saved out all shared
data, you should fully uninstall any previous versions of SolidWorks from your machine. After fully
uninstalling SolidWorks and its add-ins, you should install the new software.

Configuration Requirements
1. SolidWorks Electrical 2014 includes SQL Server 2012 Express in the installation; this is used to store
the program intelligence, manufacturers parts, library symbol descriptions, etc. Note that SolidWorks
Electrical will use ports 1433 TCP and 1434 UDP to communicate between client and server.
Please ensure that these ports are open and set to the correct type.
2. Users with a 32-bit version of Microsoft Office 2010 running the 3D add-in on the same system WILL
NOT be able to archive/unarchive projects in SolidWorks Electrical 3D. This operation will
be limited to the 2D application.
Please note also: Microsoft Office is not required to run SolidWorks Electrical Software.
SolidWorks Electrical Professional is compatible with SolidWorks 2013 and higher.
Additionally, if you do plan on installing SolidWorks Electrical 3D, you must have the same version
and service pack of SolidWorks already installed on your PC. Installing SolidWorks after installing
Electrical 3D will fail to have the add-in recognized.

License Transfer
You are allowed only two activations per standalone license; one for your business and one
for your home machine. As part of the license agreement, you may not use both
simultaneously. If you have your SolidWorks Electrical seat activated currently, please
transfer the license to deactivate before continuing the new installation. If your SolidWorks
Electrical license is tied to your main SolidWorks license (i.e. they are the same number),
please see the SolidWorks standalone install guide for this process. If this is a fresh
installation, you can skip the Transfer section.
The activation license is based on the computer hard drive and motherboard. If you are upgrading your
SolidWorks software or moving to a new computer, you will need to transfer your license back, do the
upgrade and then reactivate the license on the new hardware configuration. Do this also if reformatting
your hard drive or operating system.
If you do not have internet access, see the e-mail transfer section of this document.
