UIT Motto

Would You Not Think

his is a question that the Quran puts to mankind. In

interpretation, however, it is a subtle call for thinking,
contemplation and reflection, a theme that has been repeated
in the Quran several times in a variety of contexts. The Quran
has not simply handed down an advocacy for thinking and
reflection as a free floating abstract but has provided a kind of
pathway starting with thinking about self to the creations in
the universe, conquest of universe and forces of nature,
leading ultimately to the understanding of the Creator
Himself. For example: Do they not reflect within themselves
[30:8] Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and
the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of
understanding who reflect on the creation of the heavens and
the earth, [saying], Our Lord, You did not create this in vain.
and We (thus) present to people similitudes that perhaps
they will think.[59:21]
He has made subject to you the Night and the Day; the Sun
and the Moon and the Stars are in subjugation by His
command. Verity in this are signs for men who use wisdom.
[16: 12]
Every human initiative starts with a thought says Maulana
Rumi, That is followed by action.
The French philosopher Descartes on his truth-seeking journey
came to doubt everything: except ability to think. Thus, his
words I think, therefore, I exist became the beacon of the
Renaissance and the western civilization for centuries to come.
Allama Iqbal lamented just over a century ago in his
Reconstruction: For the last 500 years, religious thought in
Islam has been practically stationary.
This Divine Message is placed in the logo for our students,
other members of the UIT family and any one who reads it to
engage in reflective thinking along the lines prescribed in the
divine guidance.

In Memory of
Muhammad Usman
(1935-1973)

Usman Institute of Technology was

established under Usman Memorial
Foundation by Hasham Family in
memory of its eldest son
Mohammad Usman, who left this
world at the age of 35 in a tragic
accident.
A befitting tribute to the departed
soul and a valuable gift to nation,
the Usman Institute of Technology
upholds the noble mission of
service above self in furthering the
cause of higher education.

Directors Message
The year 2015 marks the 21st anniversary of UITs
founding and a proud record of service to the cause of
higher education. Coupled with this success, another
feather in UITs hat is the affiliation with NED University
of Engineering and Technology. Students admitted in Fall
2015 onwards will receive degrees of NED University.
UIT has to rise to the challenge of competition and quality
and it welcomes students who would like to be part of a
community striving for critical thinking, innovation,
problem solving and breaking new grounds.
Why not be a part of UIT?

Section 1
General Information

11

Why UIT?
There are several reasons :
UIT is a place of higher learning. Learning takes place verbally in the
class rooms and by experimentation in the laboratories UIT has excellent
facilities for both. Students are guided and encouraged to self-learning;
also through a variety of resources including library and Internet. The
Institute ensures that education in engineering and technology has
adequate mix of humanities and extra curricular for a wholesome
development of students personality.
The congenial location of the UIT campus is an advantage for most as
it is easily accessible by all modes of transportation from all parts of city.
Furthermore, its students have refrained from involving in activities that
are counter productive to education. Consequently, over the last 21
years of its existence, the UIT campus has remained peaceful and we
are determined to continue with that legacy.
Established in 1994 through a benefaction of Usman Memorial
Foundation, UIT is a not-for-profit Institution. Any surpluses generated
at all, are ploughed back into the development of UIT. Its engineering
programmes are accredited by Pakistan Engineering Council and
computer science programmes are accredited by NCEAC (National
Computing Education Accreditation Council). UIT is equipped with
excellent labs, well stocked library and purpose built class rooms. Our
wi-fi enabled campus encourages students in learning and interaction
both within and outside the classroom.
UIT is proud of its faculty who are well qualified in their relevant fields.
They play a very important role in the life of a student as teachers,
mentors, counselors and advisors. As dedicated teachers, they involve
students in decision making at all levels with respect to academic, extra
and co-curricular activities, help them in their projects and groom them
to pursue their academic journey smoothly.
UIT has graduated over 3000 students to date. Most were absorbed
gainfully into industries, businesses, software houses and a variety of
other enterprises. Many have risen to top positions in their fields.
UIT endeavors to promote critical thinking, innovation, creativity and
vision in its academic and multi-disciplinary pursuits. Collectively, all
endeavors promote development of a professional engineer with a
wholesome personality, a successful and useful member of the human
society, a friend of animals, plants, all other beings and environment.
13

Students
Students, undoubtedly, are the most enterprising and
valued members of any educational institution. UIT is a
firm believer in that and holds its students in high esteem.

Student Handbook
To further assist the student and for guidance a Student
Handbook is uploaded on the website. A comprehensive
information is provided in the Handbook so that the
students may know as to what is where, who is who, and
where they have to go and whom to contact in case of any
issue, problem or information they need.

Student Advisors

Students joining degree courses are assigned 'Advisors'

who are members of the faculty. Normally, these
appointments/meetings take place throughout the entire
period of student's stay at UIT unless a change becomes
necessary due to departure of the faculty member or for
balancing the Advisor's load.

Students, both females and males, are equal members

of UIT family with faculty and staff. As respectable
members of this educational fraternity and future hope
of the nation, every effort is made to ensure their security
on campus and to preserve their dignity, self respect and
aspirations.
UIT believes in a holistic development of students.
Students are encouraged to take initiative and participate
in a variety of committees, events, sports and upgrade
their skills. These opportunities are listed and described
under Student Affairs and Facilities and Services.

Student Affairs

Student Affairs Office is an integral component of student

life on campus. It is a division of service and support to
enhance student growth and development. In other
words, it is a helpful friend of students even before they
are admitted to UIT as freshmen and sustains that
relationship even after graduation as alumni of UIT.
Its service areas include, amongst, others:
admissions, all relevant information and advice.
Student financial aid and scholarships

Role and Responsibilities of the Advisor

The role of the Advisor is to act as a UIT guardian and help
the assigned students to overcome their personal
problems which may otherwise be distraction to their
studies, monitor and assist in their academic progress and
oversee their discipline and general behaviour during their
stay at UIT.
Specifically, the Advisor undertakes the following
responsibilities in respect of his/her assigned students.
Provides a sense of security and confidence to the
students, invites and evaluates their suggestions for
appropriate action.

academic advising and counseling (in coordination

with faculty advisors)
Sports and other enrichment activities

Provides assistance to students for dealing with their

personal problems, if any

Alumni services (in coordination with Director,

and UIT Faculty Board, when
invited, about the future of
students who have deficiency
in academics in semester
grading.
A student may consult the
advisor
for selecting a
sequence of courses keeping
in view his or her academic
performance
in
previous
semester.
A faculty member is assigned to
each student to provide counseling
on academic advice.
The Advisor fulfills his role and
