Public shows support for police at Germantown event

What started as a passing sentence
on a Facebook page turned into a public statement of support for police in
Germantown and across the nation
Sept. 7.
"To put it quite simply, I'm overwhelmed," Germantown Police Chief
Peter Hoell said during remarks to more
than 50 people gathered at the Police
Department parking lot. "This is very
heart-warming."
Hoell said that while he was typically comfortable speaking in public, he
initially had difficulty speaking
"because we don't expect this, but we
appreciate it. Being a law enforcement
officer is not just an occupation, it's
something that we love to do -- it's a
calling, it's a way of life. We don't do
this job eight hours a day and then
come home and take off the uniform
and we're not police officers any more - it's 24/7."
Hoell said the negative reactions to
law enforcement affects officers families more than the officers who train

and prepare for their work. He then

offered an example of how being an
officer is "a way of life" Hoell noted
that when his family enters a restaurant, he sits so that he can observe
what is going on.
"And I'm out to dinner," he said.
Referring to the death of an officer
in Harris County, Texas, who was killed
while pumping gas, Hoell said, "that's
when I think it really hits home for our
families -- that someday, our best is not
doing to be good enough. It just simply
is not."
He also cited the death of an officer
in Fox Lake, Illinois -- who was a month
away from retirement -- and said "that's
when it hits home for our families."
The gathering was prompted by a
posting by Renee Welnak on the
Germantown
Police
Department
Facebook page just under a week earlier. The event also occurred on the same
day as the memorial service for the Fox
Lake officer, Lt. Joe Gliniewicz, in
Antioch, Ill.
"This is an amazing turnout to show
support for our officers who put their
lives on the line for us every day,"
Welnak said. She said a police sergeant

Jackson tailgate event to raise

funds for two veterans homes
BY NIKKI ACKERMAN
STAFF WRITER

A Community Family Tailgate Party

fundraiser that will raise money for
Operation FINALLY HOME to build
homes for two specially chosen military
heroes and their families is set for
Sunday, Sept. 20, 3 to 6 p.m., at the
Jackson Area Community Center, N165
W20330 Hickory Lane, in Jackson. The
family-friendly tailgate-style event will
include beer and brats, games, live
music, raffles, a silent auction and a
Legion Color Guard presentation, and
all money raised will go toward creating
a new life of hope, happiness and comfort for two local families.
The national non-profit organization Operation FINALLY HOME, along
with Wisconsin builders Belman Homes
and Tim OBrien Homes, land developer
Neumann Companies and task force
members from the Metropolitan
Builders Association, Renewal by
Andersen and Landmark Engineering
are working together to provide a custom-built, mortgage-free house to these
veterans. The money raised from the
Community Tailgate will be directed
toward purchasing furniture, appliances
and other needed items to make the
houses livable.
Ray Hoffman, head of marketing
and communications for Wisconsins
chapter of Operation FINALLY HOME
since its inception earlier this year (the
program began nationally in 2005),
said this is a cause near and dear to his
heart because he is a veteran and has
many veteran friends.
"I firmly believe in supporting our

vets and that there is not enough we

can do for them," said Hoffman. "The
lots were donated by Neumann
Companies, Westbury Bank was our first
sponsor and now we have over 100
sponsors, and the village of Jackson
was very receptive to us and told us
Were in. Jackson has been so awesome
in embracing Operation FINALLY HOME
and our families."
Jackson Parks & Recreation Director
Valentino said that because so many
various community groups expressed an
interest in helping with the local
Operation FINALLY HOME venture, a
committee was formed under one
umbrella through Jackson Festival,
Inc.s 501c3 status "so we could organize a large, full-scale event and write
one big check at the end," Valentino
explained.
Valentino said she is proud to be
involved in a project that she describes
as "a really big deal."
"These people receiving the homes
have really sacrificed a lot and they are
truly deserving of this," she said.
"Recipients for this honor are chosen
very carefully and must meet a number
of criteria. Jackson as a community is
so excited to have been selected as the
place to build the houses and we are
looking forward to helping turn these
houses into homes."
The homes are being built on Lots
14 and 15 on Marshland Drive in
Cranberry Creek Subdivision in Jackson.
Last week ground was broken for the
home that will go to U.S. Army Sgt.

he weather is shifting, school is back in session, and the holiday season is just around the
corner. St Boniface School is proud to announce the Seventh Annual Dutch Apple Pie
Sale. Each mouthwatering pie is handmade by over 500 wonderful volunteers. Over 2 days
are spent peeling, coring, and slicing freshly picked apples from Pine Hill Orchard in Richfield.
After the apples are prepared, they move on to quality control. Here each apple slice is meticulously checked, insuring every pie is filled with only the best slices. Finally the piece of resistance...brown sugar crumb topping is added. The pies are wrapped and boxed, ready to be enjoyed.

Deanna Meyer is the mastermind behind this epic fundraiser. Deanna wanted something to set St
Boniface apart, to offer a quality product most everyone would enjoy, and finally to support local
businesses whenever possible. Apple pies were the perfect choice. This wouldn't be a simple project, but Deanna knew it would succeed. Months of work go into preparing for this sale: from organizing hundreds of volunteers, to brainstorming ways to beat the previous year's goal, to ordering
quality supplies, and finally pulling off the production of thousands of delicious Dutch Apple Pies.
Every person involved is needed and appreciated. Thank You!
Important Apple Pie Sale information:
All pie orders have to be placed by September 21, 2015. Cost of an apple pie is $12.00
Orders can be placed with any student or faculty of St. Boniface School or you can call the school
office directly at 262-628-1955.
Pies will be available starting October 16, 2015. Pick-up/delivery arrangements can be discussed
at the time of order.
Remember, St. Boniface pies can be baked right away or frozen for a later date. Perfect for holiday
gatherings, gifts, a bad day remedy, or donated to the VFW and the St. Boniface Food Pantry.

Community supports police at local event

From Page 1

in Milwaukee she personally knew and

his wife have received death threats.
She said that was the reason behind the
post asking people to come to the Police
Department to pray for officers in
Germantown and nationwide.
"It has to be amazingly stressful and
I greatly admire those who deal with it
on a daily basis," Welnak said. She
added she was surprised by the turnout.
"I thought it would be me and five
people standing by the flagpole and
maybe the police wouldn't know we
were here. It's amazing that our community turned out this great," Welnak
said.
She also said the condition of the
country was another reason why she
suggested the event.
"The racial tension is soaring, the
extreme hate, the killing of innocent
lives in law enforcement, and we need
to turn back to God," Welnak said,
before quoting a verse from the Book of
John in the New Testament, verse 5:13.
"God is the one who can protect
these officers and the officers in our
country and we need to pray for them
on a regular basis," Welnak said.
Police Chaplain Greg Young said it is
a difficult time to be in law enforcement. He recalled being in Flint,Mich.
teaching a week earlier. In a nearby
community, a funeral was being held for
an officer who was killed. Later that
day, he heard of the death of the officer in Fox Lake, Ill. He then offered a

prayer.
"We gather this evening to support
our law officers in Germantown, our
greater communities and communities
everywhere. We pause to pray and say,
'Thank you.' We are thankful to those
who put on the uniform, go into harms
way to serve and protect, to keep all
our communities safe," Young said.
"God, we gather to lift up all the law
enforcement officers, those in recent
days and in months and years past who
have made the ultimate sacrifice -- we
lift up their families and friends and
their department brothers and sisters
everywhere who mourn their loss."
Resident Tim Riesterer offered a
community prayer during the event.
The names of all the Germantown police
officers were then read off to a nonstop
stream of applause from attendees.
Following comments by Hoell,
Nathan Boyd led attendees in singing
"Amazing Grace."
Germantown Village President Dean
Wolter then quoted President Ronald
Reagan from a May 1981 speech regarding the role of law enforcement in civil
society.
"Over the generations the protection
of the individual and the pursuit of justice has been the responsibility of our
police officers. They stand as the
guardians of the fragile thread of order
and civility that separates a civilized
society from mankind's barbarous
past," Wolter read, quoting Reagan.
"Police shoulder the trust of their fellow
citizens and their daily effort to provide

Nathan Boyd lead attendees in singing "Amazing Grace" during an event outside the
Germantown Police Department building Sept. 7.
the protection and service that are
increasingly important to our nation.
For without law and order, our society
would soon crumble."
Wolter then added: "Now is the time
to show open and active support for our
police officers and the work they perform. Not just during days of ceremonies like this, but every day of every
week. If we do not show support for our
officers when it is needed most, from
where will the candidate for tomorrow
be found? What will society look like in
the future without a community supported by a viable and committed police
force."
The program ended with blue and
black balloons being released into the
air, with the black balloons representing
officers nationwide who were killed in
the line of duty, followed by a closing
prayer by David Berghius, a pastor at
Crossway Church.
Connie Wolfe, a friend of Welnak,
said afterward that they thought it was
going to be a small event, but it kept
"growing and growing and growing."
When Wolfe and Welnak were contacted
by a local television station about the

event, they knew the event was going

to be bigger than anticipated.
Among those at the event was
Menomonee Falls resident Lowell Carl,
who said he heard about the event from
a posting on a Facebook page. Lowell
said he and a friend have been police
supporters "for a long time" and decided
to attend the Germantown event. Carl
added that he participated in a "citizens
academy" program where he rode with a
police officer on a night shift.
"How would you not come and take
a half hour on a Monday night and tell
them how much we appreciate them -even if I'm from the next village over, it
doesn't matter. They're all the same,"
Carl said.
Afterwards,those in attendance
shook hands with police officers and
Hoell had his pictured taken with several residents, including cheerleaders
from Germantown High School.
"It feels good. It feels darn good to
have the support and knowing that a
lot good people are standing up and
saying something -- that they support
law enforcement," Hoell said.

Suspect arrested after standoff

A suspect in a domestic violence
incident was taken into custody by
Germantown Police following a standoff
Sept. 8.
According to a statement from
police, the situation began at 9 a.m.
when police investigated a domestic
violence incident. The suspect was not
at a Germantown residence at the time
of the investigation. An officer
observed the suspect driving near his
residence at 1:15 p.m. that afternoon.
When an officer attempted to initiate a
traffic stop, the suspect fled. A chase
ensued that was stopped in Menomonee
Falls because the suspect was known to
police. Police later learned the suspect
was operating a vehicle that had been
reported stolen to Glendale Police.
The suspect was again seen circling
the residence at 8:30 p.m. that
evening. When an officer attempted to
stop the suspect, the suspect fled into
Milwaukee, where the chase was
stopped because the suspect was known

to police.
At 7 a.m. Sept. 8, the suspect fled
when a Germantown officer spotted
him and attempted a stop. The chase
was stopped in Milwaukee.
A resident called police after seeing
the suspect and the stolen vehicle at
the suspect's residence. The victim of
the domestic violence incident and her
daughter were previously relocated by
police the previous day for their safety.
Germantown officers at the scene disabled the vehicle and set up a perimeter around the residence. The suspect
responded by barricading himself at the
residence and making suicidal threats.
After negotiations with the suspect
lasting approximately an hour, the suspect surrendered.
The matter has been referred to the
Washington County District Attorney's
office with recommendations for felony
and misdemeanor charges.

Get your home fall- and winterready with 5 simple projects

If boots, a warm hat and a tuned-up
snow blower are the only items on your
winter preparation list, your home
maintenance plan may need a makeover.
These simple home maintenance projects can help lower your energy bills,
prevent more costly repairs and/or
increase the lifespan of your home.
1. Heating & Ventilation - Examine
your fireplace and chimney system to
ensure that no soot or creosote has collected. Any cracks or voids could potentially cause a fire. Before you turn the
furnace or boiler on, replace the air filter and hire a professional to inspect
the unit more thoroughly. These steps

will improve the efficiency and life of

your furnace and will ensure stable
indoor air quality.
2. Seal Windows and Doors - If not
properly sealed, windows and doors can
be a major culprit for heat loss. To keep
the warm air inside, inspect the weather-stripping around your home's windows and doors for leaks, rot or decay.
Repair or replace structural framing, and
caulk inside and out, if necessary.
3. Insulate well - One of the easiest
and most effective defenses against heat
loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold
drafts from entering and the loss of
heated air through basement headers,
which, when left exposed, can make
your furnace work harder. Look for a
moisture-resistant product offering high
thermal performance, such as Roxul
Comfortbatt insulation. This type of
mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that's needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt
to fit the cavity and press into place.
The insulation will help improve energy
efficiency as soon as it's in place and
provide savings over the lifetime of your
home. Comfortbatt can also be used to
top or replace old attic insulation. Aim

4. Backyard Care - Save your property from potential damage by trimming
overgrown trees and shrubs to prevent
ice-laden branches from thrashing
against electrical wires and your home's
exterior. Drain/shut off any exterior
faucets and sprinkler systems to prevent
freezing. Ensure rain or snow drains
away from the house to avoid founda-

tion problems.
5. Roof and Gutters - Inspect your
roof for shingles that are warped, damaged or even missing to prevent a future
leak. Use roofing cement and a caulking
gun to seal joints where water could
penetrate, such as around the chimney,
skylights or vent pipes. Make sure that
your gutters and downspouts are securely fastened. Downspouts should extend
at least five feet away from the home to
prevent flooding.

Football: Germantown dominates Nicolet

Germantown was stopped on its first
possession against Nicolet Sept. 4, then
scored on its next five possessions on
the way to a 36-0 win.
The Warhawks were within the
Knights 10-yard line on their first possession but a fourth-down pass play
failed.
But the Germantown defense gave
the Warhawks its second opportunity
with an interception. Following a penalty that was assessed against
Germantown on the return, the
Warhawks got the ball on the Knights
27 yard line. Four plays later Nate
Seymour and Jack Brzkala connected on
a pass play at the 8:31 mark of the first
quarter.
A blocked Nicolet punt gave
Germantown possession on the Knights
15 yard line, and Seymour and Brad
Zachowski connected on another pass
play at the 2:22 mark of the first quarter. Seymour and Zachowski then
teamed up on a 68-yard pass play while
Seymour scored on a 1-yard run to make
the score 28-0 at the 7:00 mark of the
second quarter.

A penalty by Nicolet in the end zone

gave Germantown a 30-0 lead by the
5:12 mark of the second quarter.
Germantown finished the scoring as
Seymour and Zachowski connected on a
pass play with 4:05 left before halftime.
"We didn't start very well tonight
but we talked about it and we got it
corrected," Germantown Coach Jake
Davis said afterward.
Seymour completed 4 of 10 passes
for 147 yards and four touchdowns and
ran for another score. Zachowski caught
three passes for 117 yards while
Spencer Pethan ran 6 times for 70 yards.
With a running clock in the second
half, several Germantown reserves saw
action.
"We got to see those next guys who
are up, you never know what's going to
happen. It's nice to get guys in and get
them some game experience," Davis
said.
