As part of a continuous effort to closely monitor all students' academic progress, the School will
hold a research proposal seminar on the 14th of September 2015 (Monday). This seminar will
take place at the PPSMS seminar room. All first year students are expected to participate and
present their research proposal in this seminar.
Please be reminded that this seminar is a separate event from your independent proposal defend
to your supervisors. It is not a presentation of your actual proposal nor a broad review of your
topic. The seminar will only focus on the theoretical framework and research design of your
study (the significant research problem, how that problem can be addressed experimentally,
important of study and what do we know so far? etc..). In this seminar, you are expected to
present some background, significance of your topic, the rationale of your experiments/methods,
the interpretation of results and the conclusions than can be drawn from them. Please be
informed that your seminar topic should be broadly the same as that of your research proposal.
Seminar format:
You will be given a timeslot of 15 mins to present your proposal allowing 5 mins for
questions/discussions. PowerPoint presentations should be forwarded to Dr.Suffian
(suffian@umt.edu.my) or (aan@umt.edu.my) with your name and matric no. It may not be
possible to send files larger than 20 Mb by email, so in this case please deliver files on CD or
memory stick directly to Dr.Suffian room (Level 4, PPSMS). The presentations will then be preloaded onto the PC used for the presentation. Deadline for submission of PowerPoint files is 4.00
pm,Sunday 13 September 2015.

All presenters are required to prepare an abstract of their talk (up to 250 words). The deadline
for submission of the title and abstract is Thursday 10 September 2015 (send via e-mail).
Abstracts will be circulated to all participants during the seminar.
In order to assist with planning and other requirements, I will grateful if all students could
confirm their attendance. Please fill out the attached form and have it signed by your supervisor
and send via e-mail by Sunday 30 August 2015.
As a quick reference as well as guidance to the presentation format, I attach to this e-mail the
proposal template guide for the presentation. The template may vary according to discipline and
you can revise it in whatever way suits you best.
