Prerequisites:

ECE 2100. Calculus. Differential equations.

Content:

Fundamental concepts of continuous-time and discrete-time linear system

theory; time domain techniques (convolution and solution of differential
and difference equations) and frequency domain techniques (Fourier series/transforms, Laplace and Z transforms); illustration of the use of the
concepts and tools in digital processing, control, filter design, and communications.

Text:

Signals and Systems, second edition

A. Oppenheim and A. Willsky, with S. Nawab, Prentice-Hall, 1997.

References:

Lecture packets, scanned lecture notes, and resource links will posted to
Carmen.

Evaluation:

Homework-A, exercises (lowest score will be dropped)

Homework-B, small applications
Midterm exams (October 2 and November 13)
Final exam (10:0011:45am Monday, December 14)

Homework:

Homework problems will be assigned and collected on a regular basis;

certain of these problems will be graded. Homework assignments and
due dates will be posted on the class Carmen page. Assignments are due
at the beginning of lecture on the day assigned, and solutions will be
posted to the course web page. After solutions are posted, no credit will
be issued for late homework.

Readings:

Suggested reading assignments for specific sections in the text will be

listed on the homework assignment sheets.

Goals:

The ECE 3050 student should gain a fundamental understanding of:

Modeling and properties of discrete-time and continuous-time signals and systems
DT & CT convolution for time-domain responses of Linear, TimeInvariant (LTI) systems
Fourier series and Fourier transform for frequency-domain representations of signals and systems
Laplace and Z transforms for describing CT/DT signals and systems

Exams:

The examinations will be closed-book with one 800 1100 sheet of handwritten notes (two-sided) allowed for each midterm exam, and three sheets
(two-sided) for the final exam.

Special Needs: Any student who feels s/he may need an accommodation based on the
impact of a disability should contact the instructor privately to discuss
specific needs. Please contact the OSU Office for Disability Services for
assistance in verifying the need for accommodations and developing accommodation strategies.
Honor System: Because the purpose of homework is your understanding of course material, discussions on homework and related course material are encouraged. However, all written work turned in must be your own. Sources
and collaborations must be properly referenced. Any student found to
have engaged in academic misconduct, as set forth in the Code of Student Conduct Section 3335-23-04, Prohibited Conduct, will be subject to
disciplinary action by the university.
Study Tips:

Try to synthesize a big picture view

Prepare your own summaries from lecture and text
Explain main concepts to classmates
