roofoftheburningbuilding,SpecialBrenemanwashighlyinstrumentalincalmingthe
franticpeople,frightenedbytheragingflamesandthegreatamountofsmoke,and
preventingchaos.Hethensupervisedtheloadingofthehelicopter.Inordertoevacuate
amaximumnumberofpeopleinthehelicopter,itwasnecessaryforSpecialistBreneman
tohangtotheopendoor.Thehelicoptermadethreetripsthroughintensefireandsmoke
andthecrewsuccessfullysavedthelivesofallthetrappedpeople.SpecialistBreneman's
heroicactionsareexemplaryofthehighesttraditionsoftheUnitedStatesArmy.His
courageousactionsarenotonlyacredittohimselfbuttohiscommandandtohis

Korea.Thecrew'sfirstrescueoperationinvolvedevacuatingapproximately170persons

strandedontherapidlydisappearinghighgroundofaKoreanvillage.Thehelicopter
landedinabackyardofoneofthevillagehomes,intheonlyremainingdryareawhich
measuredabout50squarefeet.Immediatelyfollowingthehelicopter'slanding,theflood
victimsbeganpushing,shovingandfighting,allseekingtoboardtheship.Responding
immediatelytotheexplosivenessofthesituation,SergeantFehringerjumpedoutintothe
midstofthemobandbyusingsignlanguage,andalimitedamountofKorean,he
attemptedtogaincontrol.PullinganEnglishspeakingKoreantohissideheshouted
ordersthatweretranslatedandbroughtthecrowdunderhiscontrol.Hethenbeganto
systematicallyloadwomenandchildrenintothehelicopter.Duringthetwomileflightto
theoffloadingarea,SpecialistFehringerspenthistimereassuringfrightenedmothers
andchildrenandmaintainingcontrol.Tenflightswererequiredtoevacuatethisgroupof
people.Onanotheroccasionitwasnecessarytohoveroverahousetogettothepeople
strandedwithinthebuilding.Whilethehelicopterwashovering,SpecialistFehringer
climbeddowntheskidtotheroofofthehouseandwentinsidetohelpthem.Specialist
Fehringer'sactionsthroughouttherescueoperationsbroughtgreatcreditonhimselfand
theUnitedStatesArmy.

date,CorporalKimwasamemberofafivemanambushpatroloperatingwithinthe
KoreanDemilitarizedZone(DMZ)asapartoftheantiinfiltrationbarriersysteminthe2d
InfantryDivisionSector.Atapproximately2100hourson29June1968,athreeman
NorthKoreaninfiltrationteamwassightedmovingtowardstheambushpatrolofwhich
CorporalKimwasamember.Theentirepatrolcalmlywaiteduntiltheintruderswere
wellwithintheambushpositionandthenopenedfire,killingoneinfiltratorandforcingthe
resttofleenorth.CorporalKim'sbehaviorthroughouttheentireactionwasoutstanding.
Hisperformancewascharacterizedbysuperiorselfcontrol,unflinchingdiscipline,and
remarkablecourage.Hefullydemonstratedhisoutstandingprofessionalabilityand
completedevotiontoduty.Hisrapidresponsetothecommandsofhispatrolleader,the
effectiveandaccuratefirethatheplacedontheadvancinginfiltrators,andhisdisregard
forpersonalsafetysignificantlycontributedtothesuccessofhisunit.CorporalKim
clearlydemonstratedhiswilltodefendhiscountryandhisdedicationtothecauseof
freedom.Hisperformanceofdutyisinkeepingwiththehighesttraditionsofthosewho
standreadytodefendtheFreeWorld.CorporalKim'sactionsreflectedgreatcreditupon

subjectedtoextremeformsofphysicalandmentalcruelties,whichwereinviolationofall
internationalagreements,hesteadfastlydemonstrateddefianceandtotalresistance
towardshiscaptors.HeneverwaveredinhisdevotiontodutyandloyaltytotheUnited
States,eventhoughtheguardsandinterrogators,frustratedbyhisbehavior,increased

tailgateofthetruckinordertoevacuateinjuredpersonnelandredeploythemenand
weaponstowardofftheNorthKoreans.Hisoutstandingandheroicactionsgreatly
assistedindrivingofftheenemyandpreventedpossiblefurtherinjuryanddeathsamong
thetrappedsoldiers.LieutenantColwell'sintrepidityandconspicuouslyoutstanding

hovertaxiingittothehelipad.Whenthetailboombecamedislodgedfromthetree,the
helicopterrotatedviolently,becamecompletelyuncontrollable,crashed,andimmediately
burstintoflames.Whentheaircraftcrashed,thecopilotwastrappedontheflightdeck.

tohisbelt.Heedgedtowardtheflounderingman,andsucceededinsecuringhimwiththe
wire.Whenthemenonthebridgeattemptedtopullbothmenupstream,thetremendous
pressuresnappedPrivateSligh'sbeltbuckle,leavinghimstrandedwiththehelpless
soldier.AlthoughPrivateSligh'sownstrengthwaswaningfast,hegallantlyheldthe
man'sheadabovewaterandclungtotheanchorlineformorethan30minutesuntilhis
comradescouldobtainandtosshimaropetoeffecttherescue.PrivateSligh'svalorous
conductandintrepidactionswereinstrumentalinsavingthelifeoftheKoreansoldier,

himselfbyheroismon2August1956atPusan,Korea.WhenPFCVidmanreceivedword
thatagroupofpeoplewereindistressonapointoflandatHeundeBeach,Pusan,Korea,
hepromptlyproceededtothescenewithhiscommandingofficerandotherpersonnel
fromhisunit.Hefoundthatahugewaveinthewakeofatyphoonhadwashedseveral
personsintotheseaandtheywerebeingdrownedbytheragingsurf.PFCVidman,with
thehelpofseveralenlistedmen,attemptedtothrowaropetooneofthedrowning
victims.Thisrequiredhimtoclimbdownajuttingcliffwherehighwaveswerebreaking
ferociouslyagainsttherocks,placinghimingreatdangerofbeingsweptintothesea.
Riskinghislife,heexhibitedeverypossibleefforttocompletetherescue.PFCVidman's
heroicactionsintheemergencyreflectthehighestcreditonhimselfandtheUnitedStates
Army.

villageofChangjaDng,Korea,on28January1961.Whileparticipatingintheannual
ArmyTrainingTest,PrivateWattswasinformedthatthetanktowhichhewasassignedas
loaderwasonfire.Afterstandardfirefightingprocedureswerecarriedout,theflames
abatedmomentarily,andthecrewdismountedtodeterminetheextentofthedamage.
Suddenlythefirereflashedandthetankenginebeganblazingfiercely.Realizingthatthe
immediatedangerofanexplosionofthefullyarmedandcombatloadedtankthreatened
thelivesandsafetyofInfantrytroopsinthearea,PrivateWattsquicklyopenedthegrill
doors,and,usingfireextinguishersbroughttohimbycrewmembersofothertanks,
directedasteadystreamofcarbondioxideatthesourceofthefire.Withcomplete
disregardforhisownpersonalsafety,herefusedtoleavethetank,despitethefactthat
theintenseheathadmeltedthesolesofhisboots.PrivateWattspersistedinhisefforts,

andhisunswervingdeterminationandcourageousactionspermittedsufficienttimeto
organizeanddirectthefirefightingteamwhichbroughttheblazeundercontrol.The
braveandheroicmannerinwhichPrivateWattsriskedhislifeinthisdangerous
emergencyisinthemostcherishedtraditionsoftheUnitedStatesArmy,andreflects
greatcreditonhimselfandthemilitaryservice.

Washington.Whilewalkingdown57thStreetinNewYorkCity,CaptainWegardobserved
awindowwasherdanglingbyonestrapofhissafetybelt,theotherstraphadbroken,
belowaclosedwindowonthefifthfloorofanofficebuilding.Noattemptwasbeingmade
tohelpthemanwhowasingravedangeroffallingatanyminute.CaptainWegard
rushedintothebuilding,tookanunattendedelevatortothefifthfloor,hurriedlyfoundthe
unopenedwindow,andinstructedoneoftheofficeemployees,whowasunawareofthe
accident,tohangontohisthighswhilehepulledthewindowwashertosafety.
Disregardinghispersonalsafety,CaptainWegard,supportedbytheofficeemployee,
leanedoutofthewindow,graspedthewindowwasherunderthearms,andpulledhimto
safety.CaptainWegard'sdecisiveandcourageousactionpreventedthecertaindeathof
thevictimoftheaccidentandreflectsgreatcreditonhimselfandthemilitaryservice.

completedisregardforhisownpersonalsafety,heunhesitatinglyenteredtheicyriverin
anefforttorescuethepanicstrickenyouths.Uponreachingtheedgeoftheice,he
managedtograsponeofthefrightenedboys,andwiththeaidofapoleextendedtohim
byacompanion,pulledtheboythroughthewatertothebankoftheriver.Private
Westefeld'spromptandcourageousactioninthisemergencyisinthehighesttraditionof
theUnitedStatesArmyandreflectsgreatcredituponhimselfandthemilitaryservice.

SpecialistWhitelearnedthataheavytruckcontainingapproximately20servicemenhad
crashedthroughtherailingandplunged40feettotheriverbank.Herushedtothescene
oftheaccidentandassistedinanattempttorightthetruckandreleasethetrappedmen.
Atthisjuncturethegasolinetankexploded,knockingSpecialistWhiteabout20feet.
Despitehisownburnsandintenseheathereturnedtotheflamingvehicletoaidasoldier
whoseclothingwasafire,gothimtotherivertoextinguishtheflames,andadministered
firstaid.Onlyafterallpossibleassistancehadbeengiventheinjuredsoldiersdidhe
accepttreatmentforthepainfulburnshehadincurred.SpecialistWhite'sdisplayof
heroismreflectsgreatcreditonhimselfandthemilitaryservice.

EngineerFirefightingCompany,SergeantWilliamsandhiscompanyrespondedwithin
minutesafterareportoffireaboardtheSSAudreyII,loadedwithHEbombs,incendiary
clustersandheatsensitiveexplosives,berthedinPusanHarbor.Firefightingoperations
werehamperedbyintensecloudsofbillowingsmoke.Fullyawareofthedangerinvolved,
SergeantWilliamsenteredthesmokelogged,ammunitionladenhatchtoascertainthe
locationandextentoftheblaze.Heimmediatelysawanignitedparachuteflarewedged
betweenthehullandthedunnage,outofreachofthefirehoseandimminently
threateningtodetonatethelethalcargo.Quicklyseizingtheburningflarewithhisbare
hands,hecarriedittothecenteroftheholdwherethewaterhosecouldextinguishit.
SergeantWilliams'quickthinkingandintrepidactionsavertedamajorcatastrophewith
potentiallossoflivesandproperty,reflectingutmostcreditonhimselfandupholdingthe
esteemedtraditionsofthemilitaryservice.
