After I lost in the Wimbledon final, I dreamt a few days later that I won
Wimbledon. And I woke up.Last night, they dreameda recurring dream of
historys moment by a moment claimed. Today begins not with echoes, but a call to
arms across the All England Club. A fanfare that shakes the ivy, charges the air and
sets the day on fire. For this is the place and these are the men of the hour, hoping
to seize the day. The world number one (Novak Djokovic) intensity in his eyes,

precision in his game. He strut his stuff to the title two years ago. And this year,
hes roared here with an iron fist, so far. A former US Open champion (Juan Martin
Del Potro) chopped down by the grass in the quarters, he recovered to advance to
the penultimate round. A powerful up-and-comer (Jerzy Janowicz) who beat his
compatriot to become the first Polish man ever to come this far. And Great Britains
great hope (Andy Murray) on the threshold again of ending a reign full of tears.
With the first victory here for a British man in seventy-seven years. When night falls,
they will dream yet again. Two, of what might have been, and the others, of what
could be. These are the Gentleman Semifinals at Wimbledon.

Peel back the layers of process and decline to picture the New York of
another time. A city for a strolling, for dreaming, for falling in love, for sharing
experiences with eight million people or just one. That time is not gone. It lives on
nights like tonight. When we gather under the moonlight and give our heart to
athletes, who enrich our lives by devoting theirs to a single pursuit. It has taken this
man from spirited contender to champion. This Brit is the pride of his nation, who
proudly holds the title, here, determined to defend it. And whats more exciting than
a blossoming romance, which promises to become a long-lasting love affair. The
young, confident American, whose star is on the rise. OnceNew York wasnt only
alive and electric, but also romantic. But it hasnt changed a bit. Andy Murray,

What happens to the dreamer when the dream has been achieved? What
makes it real? I was waking up a lot in the middle of the night and I had to keep
kinda watching the end of the match for ten days or so after it. Everything seemed
quite surreal a few days afterwards. I didnt know quite whether to believe it or not.
In winning Wimbledon, Andy Murray didnt simply meet a personal goal or gained
greater prosperity, he gave a kingdom back its history in the game. Afterward, he
was congratulated by the Queen, met with the Prime Minister, had his win
memorialized by the Royal Mail. Only in a few weeks time did he begin to
understand his own accomplishment. Its not until I had time to myself that I
started to maybe appreciate all the work that went into that and how much
pressure was on me and especially at the end of that match and that last game. To
come through that was a huge relief. Now he plays here. Not simply as the winner
of the last major, but the last winner of this one. For the first time, he will be the
defending champion at a Grand Slam. A year ago in the US Open, Murray faced the

fear of losing his fifth straight major final. Yet, when the point game to serve for his
first, the fear was gone. I expected to be literally overcome with nerves and you
know, almost feel like I couldnt hold the racket. And yet, I remember when I got up
from my chair, I think because I built so much in my head, it didnt feel so bad. The
fact that I really wasnt overcome by nerves was a good sign. Murray has always
embraced New York a shoreline removed from the burden of national expectation
and a continent away from unrelenting scrutiny. It is a city that draws dreamers and
conjures dreams. Maybe the right setting for the next one. When I was fifteen, I
came to play the juniors here and I just loved it. I loved the atmosphere. The night
matches in New York is a unique experience. You dont play any other matches like
that during the year and any other tournaments. And I always get up for it. What
happens to a dream achieved? Perhaps it lightens the load and allows the next
dream to grow.

Greatness is impatient. It is impulsive and erratic, fickle and rash. Triumph

isnt reliable. It is elusive and faithless, slide and shifting. There can only be one
constant and Rafael Nadal has it - as engine and code, reason and nature. The
passion for life. The passion for what you are doing. I really dont understand to do
things without passion. I worked it all my life to become a professional tennis player
and I work it all this time with my best attitude and a great passion and love for the
game. Nadals game may be based on talent, be its always been shaped on by

forbear and zeal. He missed New York a year ago, and the city missed him. Of
course we celebrated Murray and honoured Serena. But the night was cooler and
the autumn closer without Nadals light and heat. His absence was a hole, and now
he returns to fill it. Well, its great. Just be here, have a chance to play in the last
Grand Slam of the season. In New York, its a very special feeling. Its two years
since Im back in a tournament like this one. Im emotional to be here and Im
practicing with the best motivation each day with the right attitude, I think. He
stresses the attitude, we see the results. Yet, there was the first round straight-set
loss to Darcis at Wimbledon. But the defeat didnt linger perhaps because the
passion is cure and clarity, and always has been. I go on court always thinking I can
lose. The lose is part of our sport. And if you try your best in every moment, and
fight for every ball, you play with the right attitude. Few will devote more strain or
offer more breath. It is what he brings and what he bears. Its how he plays and who
he is. Today, I have the chance to compete in Arthur Ashe Stadium. The scenario I
dreamed of being in as a kid. If you are not playing with your greatest passion when

We have spilled much ink, you and I, in our discussion of human connection.
And we are no closer in understanding than we were when the correspondence
began. I often fear as if Im standing on one side of a wide chasm, shouting across,
and wondering if the response I hear comes from you, or if it is my own voice
echoing back to me.
It seems to me on my side of the canyon, the search or unity with another is the
font of much of the worlds unhappiness. I watch as Watson, eager as ever to
extract some meaning from the prevailing social conventions, endures a series of
curated mating rituals. It seems to me that she is incrementally less content each
time she returns from one.
I conduct myself as though I am above matters of the heart, chiefly because I have
seen them corrode people I respect, but in my candid moments I sometimes wonder
if I take this stance I do because, for a lack of a better word. Is a game I failed to
understand, and so I opt not to play.
After all, if I truly had the purity of all my convictions, I wouldnt regret so many of
the things I have done.
Nor would I persist against so many of my better instincts in this correspondence. I
find you a challenge, one that in spite all youve done, continues to stimulate, and
so the conversation, futile though it may finally be, continues, and we are left to
wonder have we simply failed to find the answers to the question that preoccupy
us or can they not be answered at all. Fortunately, for both of us, the world always

Today we are launching a campaign called HeForShe. I am reaching

out to you because I need your help. We want to end gender inequalityand to do
that we need everyone to be involved.
This is the first campaign of its kind at the UN: we want to try and galvanize as
many men and boys as possible to be advocates for gender equality. And we dont
just want to talk about it, but make sure it is tangible.
I was appointed six months ago and the more I have spoken about feminism the
more I have realized that fighting for womens rights has too often become
synonymous with man-hating. If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this
has to stop.
For the record, feminism by definition is: The belief that men and women should
have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of the political, economic and
social equality of the sexes.
I started questioning gender-based assumptions when at eight I was confused at
being called bossy, because I wanted to direct the plays we would put on for our
parentsbut the boys were not.
When at 14 I started being sexualized by certain elements of the press.
When at 15 my girlfriends started dropping out of their sports teams because they
didnt want to appear muscly.
When at 18 my male friends were unable to express their feelings.
I decided I was a feminist and this seemed uncomplicated to me. But my recent
research has shown me that feminism has become an unpopular word.
Apparently I am among the ranks of women whose expressions are seen as too
strong, too aggressive, isolating, anti-men and, unattractive.
Why is the word such an uncomfortable one?

I am from Britain and think it is right that as a woman I am paid the same as my
male counterparts. I think it is right that I should be able to make decisions about
my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies
and decision-making of my country. I think it is right that socially I am afforded the
same respect as men. But sadly I can say that there is no one country in the world
where all women can expect to receive these rights.
No country in the world can yet say they have achieved gender equality.
These rights I consider to be human rights but I am one of the lucky ones. My life is
a sheer privilege because my parents didnt love me less because I was born a
daughter. My school did not limit me because I was a girl. My mentors didnt
assume I would go less far because I might give birth to a child one day. These
influencers were the gender equality ambassadors that made who I am today. They
may not know it, but they are the inadvertent feminists who are. And we need more
of those. And if you still hate the wordit is not the word that is important but the
idea and the ambition behind it. Because not all women have been afforded the
same rights that I have. In fact, statistically, very few have been.
In 1997, Hilary Clinton made a famous speech in Beijing about womens rights.
Sadly many of the things she wanted to change are still a reality today.
But what stood out for me the most was that only 30 per cent of her audience were
male. How can we affect change in the world when only half of it is invited or feel
welcome to participate in the conversation?
MenI would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. Gender
equality is your issue too.
Because to date, Ive seen my fathers role as a parent being valued less by society
despite my needing his presence as a child as much as my mothers.
Ive seen young men suffering from mental illness unable to ask for help for fear it
would make them look less machoin fact in the UK suicide is the biggest killer of
men between 20-49; eclipsing road accidents, cancer and coronary heart disease.
Ive seen men made fragile and insecure by a distorted sense of what constitutes
male success. Men dont have the benefits of equality either.
We dont often talk about men being imprisoned by gender stereotypes but I can
see that that they are and that when they are free, things will change for women as
a natural consequence.
If men dont have to be aggressive in order to be accepted women wont feel
compelled to be submissive. If men dont have to control, women wont have to be
controlled.

Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive. Both men and women should
feel free to be strong It is time that we all perceive gender on a spectrum not as
two opposing sets of ideals.
If we stop defining each other by what we are not and start defining ourselves by
what we arewe can all be freer and this is what HeForShe is about. Its about
freedom.
I want men to take up this mantle. So their daughters, sisters and mothers can be
free from prejudice but also so that their sons have permission to be vulnerable and
human tooreclaim those parts of themselves they abandoned and in doing so be a
more true and complete version of themselves.
You might be thinking who is this Harry Potter girl? And what is she doing up on
stage at the UN. Its a good question and trust me I have been asking myself the
same thing. I dont know if I am qualified to be here. All I know is that I care about
this problem. And I want to make it better.
And having seen what Ive seenand given the chanceI feel it is my duty to say
something. English statesman Edmund Burke said: All that is needed for the forces
of evil to triumph is for enough good men and women to do nothing.
In my nervousness for this speech and in my moments of doubt Ive told myself
firmlyif not me, who, if not now, when. If you have similar doubts when
opportunities are presented to you I hope those words might be helpful.
Because the reality is that if we do nothing it will take 75 years, or for me to be
nearly a hundred before women can expect to be paid the same as men for the
same work. 15.5 million girls will be married in the next 16 years as children. And at
current rates it wont be until 2086 before all rural African girls will be able to
receive a secondary education.
If you believe in equality, you might be one of those inadvertent feminists I spoke of
earlier.
And for this I applaud you.
We are struggling for a uniting word but the good news is we have a uniting
movement. It is called HeForShe. I am inviting you to step forward, to be seen to
speak up, To be the he for she. And to ask yourself if not me, who, if not now when.
Thank you.
