2. GLOBAL TRADE - KEY FINDINGS

The Netherlands continued to lead the way in the global pear trade. In 2014,
the Netherlands exported 421 thousand tonnes of pears totaling 427 million
USD, 3% under the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Germany,
where it supplied 23% of its total pear exports in value terms, accounting for
41% of Germanys total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, the Netherlands was a net exporter of pears. Over this
period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in
physical terms exports and imports were evenly balanced, except for in 2014
when low export prices made the difference slightly more notable.
Argentina and China were among the other main global suppliers of pears in
2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were China
(+12% per year) and Portugal (+12% per year). China, by virtue of this steady
growth, strengthened its position in the global export structure.
The Netherlands top 5 trading partners in 2014 were Germany, the United
Kingdom, Belgium, the Russian Federation and France, with a combined 63%
share of the Netherlands pear exports. The share of Belgium increased (+7
percentage points), while the share of the Russian Federation illustrated
negative dynamics (-10 percentage points).
