Shari Kessler has travelled 30 years, around the world, living through the
lens. Clients include the National Geographic Society, the Smithsonian
Institution, The World Bank, Thai Airways, the BBC, the London Times,
McGraw-Hill Publisher. From fine art black-white film-work with Minor
White at M.I.T. to an international editorial career in Asia and Latin
America. From lugging a 4x5 camera up into the Andean mountains of
Peru and Ecuador with a grant from Polaroid in the late 60s, to shooting
new corporate opportunities in Thailand and Vietnam on assignment with
Citibank in the mid 90s. Shari was the first American artist to be invited
to exhibit in Hanoi, Vietnam, since the American-Vietnam war. Shari
Kessler is Associate Professor of Media Studies with The New School,
NYC. She teaches Visual Storytelling 1 & 2 and Global Lens: Trans-Cultural
Photography, courses she developed for the on-line graduate program.

This course is all about Visual media and the power of Visual Storytelling in the Development paradigm. Keeping up with technology is essential, but no
matter what industry one is in, one thing is clear: telling a compelling story is at the core of everything you do in both your professional and personal
lives. This course explores the visual narrative with photography. Students will gain insights into what makes great photographs and what are exciting
visual narratives. They will be exposed to the aesthetic and technical aspects of shooting a story. Emphasis will be on ways of looking, seeing and
showing through photography. Core components of this course are how to think visually and how to put together visual narratives. We will spend time
on knowing all about your camera and equipment; what is good editing and how-to sequence photographs to create compelling, graphically exciting
and entertaining visual stories. Class time will include interactive lectures, viewing films, photography portfolios and exhibitions; and off-campus day
trips for photography practicums.
