Knowledge on cabin safety: No Smoking in Cabin!

Case: On December 24, 1982, an II-18 aircraft of China was on re when landing at the Guangzhou
Airport, which caused 25 dead and 37 injured among 69 people on plane. According to the

1982 12 24 18

investigation of the expert group after the accident, the reason was that a passenger smoked

69 25 37

on the plane but carelessly the unquenched cigarette end was blown to the oor from the gap

between seat slide and cabin wall and nally it developed into re under the ventilation of air ow

in the cabin.

1983

1996 7 1

In 1983, CAAC issued the regulations to forbid smoking on the planes of both domestic and
international passenger flights. Representatives of the 153 member countries of ICAO passed
a resolution on smoking on plane on October 8, 1992, in which it mandates no smoking on
international passenger planes before July 1, 1996 for each airline company.
If passenger smokes secretly in the restroom on plane and throws the cigarette end into the
waste basket, it may get the waste tissues and wet napkins burnt in the basket and then turn to
re. According to the ICAO statistics, 80% re on plane is caused by the same reason. Concerned
person said that it is hard to nd once the restroom at the tail of the cabin catches re. In particular,

80

control lines including horizontal rudder and vertical rudder are equipped at the end of cabin, and

once ring, it is easy to make the plane out of control with incalculable consequences.

Smoking is not only harmful to our health, but also will pollute the on-board air environment.
Secondly, smoking may cause re and threaten ight safety. Therefore, for your health and ight
safety, please do not smoke in cabin.

Note: Article 25, Chapter 3 of the Regulations on Civil Aviation Security of the Peoples Republic of China: The

following acts are prohibited in an aircraft:

(1) Smoke in no smoking area;

(2) Race to occupy seat or baggage compartment (rack);

(3) Fight, get drunk, or pick a quarrel and make trouble;

(4) Steal, damage deliberately or move without authorization lifesaving articles or appliances;

(5) Commit other acts endangering ight safety and disturbing the order in aircraft.

Recycled Textbooks
For many Chinese students, graduation from school involves
not only attending a ceremony, but also selling piles of
textbooks as waste paper. This is because that it is meaningless
for the students to keep most of the used textbooks, except
as monuments and reminders of their school life. Since this
winter semester, Hefei has instituted a new policy: schools
should not levy textbook charges on students undergoing
compulsory education.

Photo/FOTOE

This new policy also requires that some of the textbooks be

reused. Textbooks covered by this new set of rules include
the Music, Art, Information Technology and Science books
issued to primary school students, as well as the Music,
Art and Information Technology books used in junior high
schools. At the end of the semester, schools in Hefei will take
the textbooks back and offer them free of charge to students
who need such books for the next year.

Wuhan

Women Waiting Zone

Sexual harassment of women is one of the most serious problems in metro stations
during rush hours. The Wuhan Metro has recently announced that all the camera
systems in its metro stations will now have two sets of cameras, one belonging to the
police, one belonging to the transit operator. The improved camera system will enable
staff to better monitor behavior in metro stations.
In addition, metro stations will provide special waiting zones for women before 7
am and after 9 pm. Netizens have put forward many ways for preventing sexual
harassment on metro trains and stations. For example, someone suggested that women
taking the metro avoid skimpy dresses. However, a young lady used to stand in a
metro station holding a sign with words I can be sexy, and you cannot harass me.
Essentially, we need sound legal system, as well as firm moral constraints, not a few
extra cameras, to thoroughly eradicate sexual harassment in public.

Height Standard
10cm up to Take Buses Free

Photo/FOTOE

Yixing, a county-level city near Wuxi in Chinas Jiangsu Province, has

relaxed its height standard for taking buses free from 110 cm to 120 cm
since October 1st. Previously, according to Regulation of Taking Public
Vehicles, children taller than 110 cm should pay the same fare as adults do
when they take the bus. The reason for the adjustment of the regulation is
that the average height of children has seen a sharp rise due to improvements
in the local economy. A survey conducted by the Yixing municipal sports
bureau shows that the average height of boys under six years of age is 1.2
meters, the record of which in 2008 was less than 1.2 meters.

Beijing

Ophthalmology Night Surgery

Beijing Tongren Hospital, one of the best ophthalmology hospitals in China, has
recently decided to normalize its night surgery. Eighty percent of the patients
coming here are from other provinces around China. They come to Tongren
because they cannot get proper treatment anywhere else in the country. During the
summer, when most of students choose to see the eye doctor because they are on
holiday from school, registering at the hospital becomes even more difficult. As a
result, for eight years now, Tongren has instituted summer-time night surgery.

Photo/Imagine China

It is estimated from the beginning of July to the end of August, the number of patients
visiting Tongren totaled 158,000. During these two months, the number of patients
coming for night surgery surged 77.8%. In order to meet the needs of all those patients,
the hospital has decided to normalize night surgery. Night surgery is carried out on the
first floor of the east wing of the hospital, and patients should register when they
arrive at Tongren, after 7:30 in the morning. Doctors begin doing vision tests at
15:00 in the afternoon and start treating patients at 16:00. Doctors doing the night
surgery shift are all experienced senior physicians. Two to three doctors will be on
duty to serve patients every day, which will significantly enhance Tongrens ability
to treat larger numbers of patients.

Actually, the new clothes is a new kind of special coating

No Home Purchase within a Year

Photo/Imagine China

Why is it hard to purchase an apartment in Singapore? The situation is not caused by high housing-prices;
on the contrary, it is because home buyers use too many resources, creating chaos when following their
inclination to buy several apartments when purchasing a home for themselves. However, after the no home
purchasing within a year if a home buyer changes his mind after ordering a new apartment regulation came
into force earlier this year, the numbers of would-be purchasers canceling orders decreased significantly.
Those who really need an apartment now have a better chance of getting one after this change. According to
the Housing Development Board (HDB), there have been only 48 cases of instances of canceled orders out
of the 6,500 cases (0.7%) of new homes being purchased after the one-year prohibition went into effect in
March. In addition to the one-year home purchasing prohibition, the HDB also added an option fee of 200
to 2,500 Singapore Dollars when citizens order different kinds of houses. And when home buyers sign their
contracts, they have to pay 10% of the whole price up-front. Once the option fee has been paid, if the home
buyer changes his mind, he will lose the money and the house-buying subsidies offered by the government.
He will also have to face the one-year house buying prohibition.

South Korea's
Smoking "Divide"
South Korea has a huge gender gap when
it comes to smoking. It boasts one of the
biggest populations of male smokers in the
world, but ranks near the bottom of the globe
with repect to the number of female smokers.
According to data released by the health
ministry, South Korea has the second highest
number of male smokerssome 44.3% of the
total adult male populationamong the 34
OECD countries. Although the percentage is
still high, it has been drastically been reduced
from the early 1990s, when more than 70 percent of all Korean males smoked.
But the Korea Smoker's Association, an
association founded to defend smokers' rights,
said the figures are incorrect. The association
chairman Chung Kyung Soo said that the
health ministry is trying to show that Korea
has a high number of smokers so that it can
enforce stricter rules in the country. However,
he argues that smokers, like non-smokers,
also have rights. He said: "I know that it
would be better if people did not smoke. But
for those who smoke already, shouldn't their
rights be considered? Consumers have a right
to consume products that are allowed to be
sold by the government." However, the South
Korean government is determined to reduce
the number of smokers in the country. The
plan is to make all restaurants smoke-free by
December 2016.

Electric Charge
Rise Officially
The price of electrical power in Tokyo has been officially
raised. After several months of planning and preparation,
Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has put the price
increase plan into effect. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and
Industry (METI) of Japan has given formal approval to TEPCO
for its plan to raise the household electricity charge, which
means families in Tokyo see the living costs go up again. The
household electric charge in Tokyo has already been raised by
8.5% since September; and the average monthly electric charge
of ordinary families is now 7,548 Japanese Yen (or about $97).
When the rising cost of fuel is factored in, the average monthly
electric charge has been increased by 575 JPY (or $7.36).

Photo/Imagine China

According to METI, TEPCO has raised the price of electrical

power for manufacturing and commercial industries by 17%
since April, and this increase has been resisted by some firms.
Originally, TEPCO wanted to boost the household electric
charge by 10.28% to cover the $530-million depreciation cost
of the countrys 6 nuclear reactors. However, the company
reduced the increase to 8.46% due to the pressure from the
public. Previously, the government injected about 1 billion
dollars into the company in July, effectively nationalizing
TEPCO.

New Airport Building

Photo/CITS

Airports have become multi-functional sites for passenger

services, shopping, and the like. Nowadays, with more
and more passengers choosing air planes as their means
of traveling abroad, the standards and requirements of
airports have become diversified. Why cant a small
city own more than one airport? Abdullah, the minister
of Bruneis Transportation Department, says that the
second airport building of Brunei International Airport
under construction will use the successful experience of
Singapores Changi International Airport as its guidepost
and make the care and comfort of the passengers its first
priority. Abdullah says that the new building can not only
enable the airport to better cope with increased flights
and passengers, as well as satisfy the countrys need of
physical distribution and transport junction, but will also
serve as a landmark of the area. He believes that the new
airport building will bring more passengers and travelers
into the country. The country has invested about $11
billion into constructing the new building, which will be
completed by 2014. It is predicted that the new building
can serve a population of 3 million travelers annually.
And it is estimated that the existing airport building can
only handle about 1.5 million a year; however, the level of
passenger traffic last year amounted to over 2 million.

From Pit to Garden

Industrialization is the root cause of the exploitation
of mineral resources and this exploitation has been
a mixed blessing. On one hand, mining mineral
resources has promoted economic development.
On the other hand, it has also created a problem,
namely dealing with those abandoned pits and
how to turn mining waste into something that can
generate new wealth. Zhu Yufan from Tsinghua
University has the answer: turn the no longer used
pits into gardens.

Although a pits unique shape and form provide

designers with an opportunity to create an unusual
landscape, it also confronts them with many
challenges. The first challenge is how to repair the
serious degradation of the ecological environment.
Pits have sparse vegetation and few animal species,
while rock weathering and soil erosion are serious
problems. The second challenge is how to fully tap
and effectively use the landscape value of pit sites.
Thus, designers need to think about the problem of
how to re-establish proper contact between the pits
and human settlements.
After being fully studied and analyzed, the pit
garden was eventually divided into different areas.
In each area, people will use a different design
strategy that fits with its different conditions. In
coming up with these designs, the designer will
be inspired by traditional Chinese landscape
painting.
Eventually, the dangerous, unreachable wasteland
has been transformed into a tourist attraction for
people to get close to the natural landscape and
experience the legacy of the quarry industry.

Photo/Imagine China

The Chenshan Botanical Garden is located in the

Sheshan National Scenic Resort, which lies in
the Songjiang District, and covers an area of 207
hectares. From the beginning of the 20th century
to the mid-1980s, the mountain face of Chenshan
Hill had been destroyed by mining, with two pits
being dug on its east and west faces. Tunnels
were also dug into the mountain from the western
pit. The pit garden designed by Prof. Zhu is an
alternative garden park located in the west pit.
The design eschews artificial features by retaining
the natural scenery provided by the stones.
The rusted steel and rubble blocks express the
bygone atmosphere of industrialization. The
special garden makes us ponder the question of
how to get along with the Mother Nature as the

economy rapidly develops.

72-hour Visa-free Transit

Visa-free transit means that foreigners can transit through
and make a short visit in a country without needing a
visa from the transit country. Currently, only a few cities,
like Shanghai, in China offer 48-hour visa-free stay for
travelers from some countries. Most of the cities, including
Beijing, only allow foreigners to stay at transit points like
airports for only 24 hours. Recently, Ding Xiangyang, the
deputy mayor of Beijing, announced at the Beijing World
Tourism Cities Fragrant Hills Summit that the capitals new
visa-free transit policy has been approved by the relevant
departments and will be introduced soon. The new policy
will be made public before long, further boosting Beijings
tourist industry, while offering greater convenience to
foreign travellers.

Function & Emotion

Photo/FDL
Domani casa joined together with FDL
architecture and design to initiate a modern
home design exhibition for 2012 Beijing
Design Week. The theme for the exhibition
is function and emotion. Starting with
functionality, the exhibition sought to trigger
visitors emotions and thinking. The exhibition
delves into the evolution from function to
feeling. Six artists and designers invited
by Domani Casa presented their take-on of
both the functional and emotional side of
international furniture design.

FlexiPolis by Tobias Zaft.

One of the kinds of furniture on display is

MOSS CONCEPT by Fabrizio de Leva. It
seems to be a type of growing furniture. Our
goal is to create a growing furniture, said
Fabrizio de leva. The idea is simple. Designers
put grass or moss within the furniture, which
will then grow inside of the furniture, as well
as the rooms and homes where the furniture has
been placed. The furniture has its functional
character and the plant will respond to your

Praise of Bamboo Far & Near

Chinese Brush
Dual Use
Packaging

Recently the Chinese-American designer Jeff Dayu Shi of the Dragonfly Design Center presented the installation,
Praise of Bamboo Far and Near: Ping Qi Xian (standing screen), Ba Fang table, and Gang Rou chair.
Qi Xian in Chinese means seven sages. Shi has commissioned Taiwanese craftsmen as technical consultants for
the bamboo plaiting on the panels and executors for the whole production process. Five types of bamboo plaiting
have been used in Ping Qi Xian. They include the Wuyi Twisting, the Windmill, the Hexagonal, the Wave, and
the Free Style, which are all commonly seen in the traditional everyday objects in China. There are another two
works, Ba Fang, a table that has been custom-made for this installation, and Shis Gang Rou, Jun Zi, and
Qin Jian Chairs. The Ba Fang tableBa Fang in Chinese means far and nearis the octagonal version
of Shis Ba Xian table design. This table can be used for both dinner parties and formal meetings. On the other
hand, Shi takes the classic horseshoe armchair chair design as the prototype for his Gang Rou Chair. Comfort
and function are immensely enhanced by utilizing bamboo slats as the main material.

Recently, the award ceremony of the

2012 Pentawards Worldwide Packaging
Design Awards Competition was held at
the Opera Ballroom in Paris. A dual use
packaging for Chinese brush designed by
Xu Li, a young Chinese designer, won
the bronze award this year. Pentawards is
the first and only worldwide competition
exclusively devoted to packaging design
in all its forms, and is widely respected
as the Academy Award in the packaging
design industry. This is the fourth time Xu
Li has won international design awards. He
previously received the AIGA Design and
International Design Gold Medal awards,
as well as the London International Award.
Xu Li, a famous Chinese graphic design
curator, is now teaching at the Beijing
Institute of Graphic Communication.
His design work has won over 30 related
awards both home and abroad. The
Chinese Brush Dual Use Packaging is
a recyclable, environmentally-friendly
packaging without printing and glue. The
box is folded by a piece of recycled paper;
and you can easily fold it into a beautiful

Pottery with Bamboo Threads

Photo/Xu Li

Li Yan, a student from China Academy of Art, got the Star of Tomorrow award in the 4th Golden Frog Award
R&D Excellent Graduation Design Invitational Tournament held by R&D Design for her Pottery with Bamboo
Threads design concept. The design of a series of daily articles is based on the traditional bamboo weaving
technique. The young designer uses pottery as a carrier, and adds the natural element of bamboo thread to express
her pursuit of innocence and simplicity with plain color and an unsophisticated shape. The Golden Frog Award is an
annual design contest held by R&D Design. It is aimed at fulfilling the dream of young designers. This year is the
fourth year of this contest. Over 150 excellent graduation design projects from 19 colleges, both home and abroad,
have been submitted to this design competition. The contest this year has changed the traditional style of other
design competitions by using seeds as its theme and dandelionlantern of hope as the carrier. It has attracted a
great number of new emerging designing ideas and talents.

Da Dong Roast Duck

Photo/Da Dong Roast Duck Restaurant

Dong Zhenxiang, the boss of a famous roast duck

restaurant, is called Da Dong by his friends,
which is also the name of his restaurant. You
mustnt miss this high-end dining establishment
if you want to taste about the most authentic
roast duck in Beijing.
Mr. Dong sticks to traditional ways of cooking
Chinese cuisine and is always trying to showcase
original Chinese culture with his delicious dishes.
He hopes to let his customers feel blessed by
his gourmet cooking skills.
Compared with traditional roast duck, which
is quite greasy, Da Dongs roast duck shows
his consideration of his customers health. The
skin of Da Dong roast duck has a unique texture
for it is crisp but not at all oily. And Mr. Dong
chooses a special kind of sugar, one that is low
in sweetness, to serve with the duck, making its
skin melt in the mouth.
Da Dongs roast duck not only tastes less greasy,

10

but according to the result of a scientific test, it

indeed contains less fat than tradition roast duck.
You can not only taste authentic roast ducks in Da
Dongs restaurant, but also other creative dishes.
Da Dong Roast Duck has been named one of the

People in Changsha like to eat crayfish, or chicken lobster, which are really not at all
like the lobsters living in the sea. It is said that crayfish were introduced from Australia;
without natural enemy in China, the creature multiplied too fast, creating many problems.
As a result, people in Hunan started to make it a dish on their tables in order to do
some good for the environment. Fang Ji is a new food stall serving crayfish. Special
procedures are taken to make the shell of the crayfish very easy to remove. Before you
move your chopsticks, fresh chicken lobsters look and smell seductive when soaked in
bright-colored chill oil. Taking a bite, you will find delicious juices streaming into your
mouth with the chewy meat. Your tongue will become addicted.

Athena on
the Sea
To those travelers who are more knowledgeable
about China, visiting Xiamens Gulangyu Island is no
less attractive than taking a trip to Tibet. People love to visit the Gulangyu
to enjoy its slow-paced lifestyle. The owner of the restaurant named it Athena on the Sea,
which is quite poetic. You can have a drink or a brief meal in the restaurant while enjoying
the establishments collection of hundreds of different models of sailing boats. When you go
out of the restaurant, you can find an old villa standing just a few steps from the Athena on
the Sea. After elaborate decoration, the ground floor of the villa is now being used as another
restaurant, which serves drinks and seafood, while also offering several hotel rooms facing
the sea. The villa shares the name of the restaurant. The sea is just a few meters away from
the restaurant and the villa, so you can even place your table in the open air and enjoy the sea
breeze with your friends. Many people find it hard to tear themselves away from this place.
However, if you want to enjoy your time quietly there, avoid going on public holidays.

Kung Fu BBQ

The inconspicuous little restaurant is located in Kaixuan Street, which is Hangzhous famous Barbeque
Street. Compared with other restaurants along the street, Kung Fu BBQ looks much cleaner. Simple
wooden tables and chairs give the restaurant both a homely and beautiful appearance. The price of the
restaurant is indeed very reasonable, as you will be served a huge tray of beef for only 30 RMB; this meat
is also quite fresh and tender. The most recommended food of the BBQ restaurant is their chicken wings,
which have a slight milky flavor after it is cooked. Other dishes, like prawns, squid, needle mushroom,
potatoes, and even tiny steamed buns, are all delicious. The only flaw of the dishes in this restaurant is they
are a bit greasy. However, you have other choices, like hot pot, if you dont like oily food. In addition, the
little restaurant serves seafood, such as scallop and oysters.

Fire Dragon
Dancing
On the eve of the Mid-Autumn Festival,
Hakka people are dancing with the
fire dragon in the Dakeng District of
Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. Fire Dragon
Dancing has a history stretching back
some 132 years. The 70-meter-long
fire dragon used in the performance is
made from pearl grass and has longevity
incense sprinkled all around its body.
The Dragons head alone can weigh as
much as 35kg, so a relay of more than
200 young men are needed in every
2-hour dance trip. Those young men are
not afraid of smoke or fire they wave
the dragon with its heart on fire in both
the high streets and back lanes. Photo/

to ask the best masters in a studio for help if you wanted a color photo. We use watercolor or greasepaint to turn black-and-white
photos into color shots. This kind of photo can be found in every familys old album.

The Last Old Photo Studio

The number one metro is under large-scale construction in Jiucai
Alley, Guping Street, Fuzhou. Few people can notice the Guping
State-run Photo Studio, a small faade along the street, among crowds
of pedestrians and flow of vehicles. Compared with the brand new
wedding photo studio, the old studio looks lonely and out of date.
However, 20 years ago, Guping was famous throughout Fuzhou and
even among other Southeastern Chinese coastal cities. Lin Sen, 54, is
a photographer at the Guping Photo Studio. He has been here since he
was 16 years old. He is used to be called Master Photographer.

There were over 20 people in the studio by the late 1980s,

including a dozen photographers and personnel in charge of postprocessing those photos. Lin says, Customers coming to have
photos taken of themselves and their families had to join a long
queue during festivals and holidays. Some kids were carried here
by their parents in their arms; twenty years later, they carried their
own kids back to the same place. However, today, when all sorts
of new photo studios appear one after another, and when cameras
have become daily necessities, who will choose to take photos in
such an old photo studio? Photo/CFP

Im Going to the Spring Festival Gala

In a one-hundred-year-old building on Shengli Street in Changchun, where the pace of life is fast and the buildings are
made of steel and concrete, a group of people are sticking to their dreams no matter how hard the situation is. For years, the
Changchun Acrobatic Troupe has been performing at regular intervals in the acrobatic hall. During some especially difficult to
perform acts, there are times when acrobats fail to show off their unique technical talents on the first go. When this happens,
they all must bow to the audience and apologize before asking about doing a second try. The photo was shot in late September
during a troupe rehearsal. The 16 newly recruited members are also among the crew. The youngest member is only six years
old. They all have the same dream, namely being able to go to the Spring Festival Gala. Photo/CFP

Over 30 families from all around the country gathered in Simin Guild Hall during the
Mid-Autumn Festival for Reading the Classics with my Kids, a parent-child activity
dealing with traditional Chinese culture and cultural practices. Children aged between 5
and 10 are invited to read literary classics, make mooncakes, and decorate things with
red lanterns with their parents. The organizers hope to make learning about Chinese
culture and traditions a bridge between parents and children. In this way, the classics can

The Tao of Laughter

The Tao of Laughter, Yue Minjuns exhibition showing his new sculptures, opened in
Hong Kongs Harbor City on September 23rd. The protagonist of the exhibition is the

Yue says that the spirit of Smirking Man originated from the philosophy of Taoism,

Zhuang Autonomous Region is covered
with thin frost. The Zhuang people have

The Zhuang Peoples

Tilling Wisdom

Written and photographed by Meng Fanhong

Due to the lack of rugged topography of this mountainous region, the Zhuang people, who are the
major ethnic group living in this area, have from the time of their earliest ancestors racked their
brains on how to maximize the amount of land that can be plowed for planting rice seedlings and
other crops. After many years of hard toil, the Longji terrace came into being. The terrace seems
to be a miracle in the eyes of outsiders; however, when the Zhuang people pick up their hoes, all
they see are blocks of land which can support their families.

floor contains the kitchen, dining and living
rooms, while the top floor has the bedrooms.
These structures are genuine wood buildings,
as they lack any kind of brick or tile. This kind
of construction is impossible in Northern
China, as the weather is very dry, so if a fire
breaks out, people will have little chance of
being rescued. Since visitors from Northern
China worry about this possible danger, the
owners will symbolically put a fire bucket at
the doormost of the time, unless the owner
forgets, the bucket will be filled with water, so
as to put these guests minds at ease.
The narrow mountain road winds up
between the wood complexes, taking
an intricate and complicated path. Most
of the buildings are very close, but since
the road to them is a kind of maze, the
structures are nonetheless hard to reach.
With the development of tourism, the
wood buildings have been given many
decent names, such as XX Hotel, XX
Restaurant or XX Inn. Most of the rooms
cost around 100 RMB per day; all have a
window through which guests can gaze at
the terraces.
In the evening, a man dragging a
string of lit firecrackers came over, followed
by a group of people. The cashier at the
inn said, He is the groom in tomorrow's
wedding ceremony. As he wandered
joyously through the streets today, one
could offer him 50 RMB to go to his
wedding banquet and have a big meal
tomorrow, from morning to night.

After arriving at the inn, we paid 20 RMB to

Longji Terrace
As the largest terrace on the Longji Mountain, Longji Terrace is one of the 20 primary attractions in
Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. With a history of over 700 years, the terrace was reclaimed
and naturally scattered high and low in the mountain. In the past the Longji terrace referred to the
Qixingbanyue terrace in the Pingan Village. In a broader sense, the Longji terrace is the name of
the entire scenic spot and referrs to the whole terrace group in this area.
Two entrances to get into Longji Village:
1. Pingan Village
a. Take the Express Bus from Guilin to Longsheng County, then transfer to the shuttle bus and get off at the
Pingan Parking Lot (Longji). Pingan village is a twenty minute walk from the parking lot.
b. Take the slow train from Guilin to Heping Township and then wait for the shuttle bus from Longsheng to Longji
at the Longji intersection.
c. Take the shuttle bus from Longsheng to Shuanghekou and get Huangluo. You will reach Pingan village after
an hours walk.
2. Longji Village
a. Walk to Longji Village from the Qixingbanyue scenic spot in Pingan Village. It takes about 40 minutes.
b. Walk from the Longji intersection for a few minutes toward the direction of Longsheng County, then walk along
a trail which is under construction for about 3 hours and one can get the Longji Village. This route can save one
a 50 RMB bus ticket fare.

The Vintage Joy of Life

Due to the development of tourism,
modern civilization has inevitably spread
to Ping'an Village, where one can see
hotels, teahouses, even women soliciting
for the businesses... However, about
two kilometers from Pingan, Longji is an
authentic ancient Zhuang village.
No road connects Pingan and Longji
Villages, only a path that looks a little like
a road runs between them on a ridge. No
vehicles or bicycles, not even oxcarts, can
go through it. Unless you want to ride on
the back of a cowprovided the animal
allows one to do thatthe only way to
get through is by foot. Most visitors are
reluctant to go further once they get the
Pingan Village. It was raining and foggy
that day, so not a soul could be seen on
the road. Graves occasionally appeared on

guarding their own land.

The wood buildings in Longji

Village are really old. All the
villagers, men and women,
old and young alike, share
the family name of Liao; so
Longji looks more like the
private holding of a declining
family than a village.

In an early winter morning,

the village is quite tranquil,
if it were not for the
occasional sound of creaks
of people walking, one
could hardly know that
there are people living here.

because they seldom see strangers. But

they never display hostility when facing
strangers. If the animals see you coming
from the opposite direction, they will get
out of your way. When going in the same
direction, they will follow you but keep
a certain distance; the animals behave
as if they are embarrassed to get one
step closer. The dogs are all similar in
appearance, size, and even in behavior.
Twenty dogs act like one, that is to say all
of them will make a quick escape when
encountering people. The types and
appearances of Chinese local dogs are
almost as pure as purebred dogs, so even
hybridization has not given rise to any
exceptions in this behavior.
In this village, we saw for the first
time fructus momordicae still growing on
the vine and basketball court built on the
hillside.
In this mountain, where most available
land is farmed into terraces, the most
precious flat space is home to the village
primary school. Its small basketball court
has homemade basketball hoops. Though
the backboard still lacked a piece of wood
and the basket is just an iron ring, as long
as the children wish, they still can shoot
hoops in this ancient Zhuang village deep
The chicken, ducks, dogs and cattle of the village are all very shy, perhaps because they seldom see
strangers. But they never display hostility when facing strangers.

Unlike the wood buildings in Pingan

Village, the ones in Longji are really old. Many
of them have a history stretching back over
200 years. Longji has no new houses. There
is not even one shop, restaurant, or other
business sign in the village. All the villagers,
men and women, old and young alike, share
the family name of Liao. Longji looks more
like the private holding of a declining family
than a village. The surrounding areas are all
tranquil, and the only proof of human activity
is the bacon hung out of the window and
occasional sound of a creaking door being
opened or closed from one of the wood
buildings.
The chicken, ducks, dogs and cattle
of the village are all very shy, perhaps

in the mountain, like the famous No.23

player in American team did.

Travel Guide
Food: All hotels and restaurants offer authentic Zhuang
food, such as the homemade sausages and chili sauce.
One should not go to the Longji Village without tasting
the local Watery wine, which is brewed with rice. The
taste is too good to describe.
Accommodation: Just like the local residences, all hotels
in Pingan Village are stilted wood buildings. Hotel rooms
are mainly standard rooms, where one can see the
terraces.
Travelling: When walking around in the village and look
for scenic spots, one should bear in mind to walk along
the stone road. You can surely ask the villagers if you
can understand them.
Shopping: When shopping at stores in the village, one
must not ask for prices in one shop and go to another
shop to buy, because the two owners might argue with
each other immediately and in the end no one would do
the business with you. In any case, the prices will almost
be similar and youd better choose one shop and buy
goods from there.

A Machinist in a Small Warehouse

Tong Laibao is so capable, in fact, that he is able to make the highly sophisticated
tourbillon core device that enables watches to keep very accurate time. However, Tong
thinks that the tourbillon is not so magical and also feels that the accuracy of a watch is
the most important principle.

There is an old man living in Hangzhou

who is nearly eighty years old, but

Tong Laibao never received any

he has an amazing and natural talent for
dealing with mechanical problems, which
he picked up without any instruction. As

Tourbillons Maker
It was only because of the Tourbillon
that Tong Laibao attracted the attention
of the media for the first time. From
the news reporting, people know that
Tong can make tourbillons manually by
himself.
The encyclopedia on the internet
introduces tourbillon using very elegant
language. It says, The Tourbillon is a
kind of watch speed regulating device.
The device was invented by the Swiss
clock master Louis Breguet in 1795.
Breguet invented the tourbillon in order
to counter the effects of gravity on clock
parts. Ordinary mechanical watches
usually have large errors due to the
effects of clockwork tightness, metal
fatigue, as well as the influence of gravity.
The tourbillon governor is currently the
only mechanic watch device whose
annual deviation is less than 1 second
and also can achieve Observatory
level accuracy in keeping time. Today,
almost all the raw materials used in the
watch cores and key parts can only be
produced in Switzerland. A tourbillon
watch core made in Switzerland costs
at least 1 million RMB; in addition, the
mechanical watch with a tourbillon
w a t c h c o re i n s i d e h a s a l w a y s b e e n
highly sought after by collectors, making
it almost synonym with hard currency.
Tong tells us that the basic principle
and structure of tourbillons made by him
are the same as those in the Swiss and
European watches. It can also work very
well. He says, But the tourbillons made
by myself are only a rough version, after all,
handmade things can not be compared
with things made by machines in terms
of fineness. Manually handling those
parts, which are several times finer than
a human hair, is really very difficult even
when wearing a magnifying glass.
However, Tong does not regard
tourbillon as something very magical. He
says, In the watch repair industry, the
accuracy and performance of a timepiece
is the most important principle.

Types of Tourbillon
In 2003, inspired by the double axis tourbillon
invented in the 1970s by Richard Good, the
young German watchmaker Thomas Prescher
developed for the Thomas Prescher Haute
Horlogerie the first flying double-axis tourbillon
in a pocket watch and, in 2004 the first flying
double-axis tourbillon with constant force in the
carriage in a wristwatch.

introduction of their Double Tourbillon 30

(DT30). Both men had been working together
since 1992 at Renaud & Papi, where they
developed complicated watch movements. The
Double Tourbillon 30 features one tourbillon
carriage rotating once per minute and inclined
at 30, inside another carriage which is rotating
every four minutes.

A characteristic of this tourbillon is that it turns

around two axes, both of which rotate once
per minute. The whole tourbillon is powered
by a special constant-force mechanism, called
a remontoire. Thomas Prescher invented the
constant-force mechanism to equalize the
effects of a wound and unwound mainspring,
friction, and gravitation. Thereby even force
is always supplied to the oscillation regulating
system of the double-axis tourbillon. The device
incorporates a modified system after a design by
Henri Jeanneret.

In 2005 Greubel Forsey presented their

Quadruple Tourbillon Diffrentiel (QDT),
using two double-tourbillons working
independently. A spherical differential connects
the four rotating carriages, distributing torque
between two wheels rotating at different speeds.

Double and quadruple tourbillions

Prescher, Thomas (wristwatch), Triple-AxisTourbillon Regulator Sport. In 2004 Thomas

Prescher developed the first triple-axis tourbillon
for the Thomas Prescher Haute Horlogerie with
constant force in the carriage in a wristwatch.
The world's unique tri-axial tourbillon
movement for wristwatch with traditional jewel
bearings only was invented by the independent

watchmaker Aaron Becsei, from Bexei Watches,

in 2007. The Primus wristwatch was presented
at the Baselworld 2008 in Basel, Switzerland.
In the three axis tourbillon movement, the
3rd (external) cage has a unique form which
provides the possibility of using jewel bearings
everywhere, instead of ball-bearings. This
is a unique solution at this size and level of
complication.

Flying tourbillon

Rather than being supported by a bridge, or

cock, at both the top and bottom, the flying
tourbillon is cantilevered, being only supported
from one side. The first flying tourbillon was
designed by Alfred Helwig, instructor at the
German School of Watchmaking, in 1920 In
1993, Kiu Tai-Yu, a Chinese watchmaker who
resides in Hong Kong, created a semi-flying
tourbillon with only an abbreviated carriage for
the escapement wheel and pallet fork, the upper
pivot of the balance wheel being supported in a
sapphire bridge. Some mistakenly believe this to
be the world's first tourbillon watch with neither
bridge nor carriage.

all parties. The course of history was

manipulated by opportunistic political
motives. Even in the early days after the
victory of the Anti-Japanese War, when
the circumstances for establishing a
constitutional government were most
propitious, the KMT illegally convened
the National Assembly, which excluded
the Communists and other democratic
parties, so it could be solely in charge of
issuing a new constitution. The constitution
reestablished the national system of Chiang
Kai-shek's personal dictatorship in the
form of fundamental law. Elections existed
in name only.
If people want to achieve electoral
rights, they must overthrow the authoritarian
rule and establish their own regime. In China,
the true democratic elections were carried
out under the leadership of the Communist
Party of China. In June 1922, the CPC
Central Committee put forward the slogan
of Adopting unlimited general election
system". From June 1925 to October 1926,
in the Hong Kong general strikea largescale, long general strike that occurred in
Hong Kong and Guangzhou250,000
workers elected 800 representatives,
forming the Workers Congress by general
election as the highest deliberative
body. The Congress also elected 13
members forming the highest executive
organ, the Hong Kong General Strike
Committee. These first attempts of
building a democratic electoral system
under the leadership of CCP provided
valuable experience for the formation and
development of the Revolutionary Base
electoral system.
In 1937, the Anti-Japanese War
broke out and the Communist Party of
China led the people and established
the Anti-Japanese Bases. All bases
stressed the essence of democracy and
sought to perfect its forms. With these
goals in mind, they absorbed the useful
experience of the Soviet regime while
devising their electoral legislation to make
it more complete and mature. Hence,

Hoche: Make Clothes with Fish Skin

Written by Shao Cong Photo/FOTOE

Apparel reflects a peoples life style. Hoche people make clothes with fish skin, and this
practice cannot be separated from their original way of life, which was based on fishing.
Chinas Heilongjiang and Ussuri River once had abundant stocks of fish, making it easy for
the Hoche people to obtain large catches from these rivers. The fish they caught were not
only a source of daily food, but could also be used to make fish skin clothes.

Whether we walk into a clothing store or

open a wardrobe at home, most clothes we
can see are made of cotton, linen, fiber or
animal fur. However, in Northeast Chinas
Heilongjiang Province, there lives a national
minority called Hoche, and the Hoche
peoples traditional clothes are made of fish
skin.
The Hoche are one of Chinas smallest
national minorities in terms of population.
They are concentrated in the Three River
Plain, which consists of the Heilongjiang
and Ussuri Rivers, the lower reaches of the
Songhua River, as well as the Wandashan
area. According to the latest population
census, Hoche nationality consists of less
than 5,000 people.

One needs to do a lot of detailed
preparations before making fish skin clothes.
First, one has to strip off the whole skin of
a chub or carp with a Hoche specialized
tool, usually a wooden knife. Hoche people
experienced in making fish-skin clothing

of ensuring that the fish skin remains largely

intact. Compared to metal knives, wooden

ones will not damage the fish skin. Selecting

the right fish is also important; if the fish is
fresh enough, it is very easy to separate the
skin and meat, and there wont be a lot of
meat left on the skin. This is ideal material
for making fish skin clothes. However, if the
fish is not fresh, stripping off the fish skin
becomes a big challenge.
The fishs stripped off skin will be aired
on a flat door panel. One day later, the skin
will be dry and hard, but it still cannot be
directly used to make clothes.
Hoche people will add some cornmeal
on the hard skin, roll the skin tightly, and
wrap it up. The cornmeal, which is powder
ground from corn kernels, is mainly used
to absorb the skins fat. They then put the
wrapped skin under a wooden hay cutter;

coats in winter. The long garments have slits in the
front and back, with black edges or cloud patterns
decorated. The buttons of the clothes are unique,
usually consisting of two rows made out of leather
or catfish bone. Other kinds of clothes include
side opening jackets and pants. The fish skin pants
usually have straight upper end and the bottom of
pants are decorated with black laces.

use to make fish skin clothes. The cutter
has teeth on both upper and lower sides.
Using a wooden cutter to make the

clothes made with other material. These clothes
are usually a little long because they are mainly
influenced by Manchu peoples clothing.

Sixteen Movies Sketch the Fleeting Shadows of Hong Kong

1950s: A Black and White Portrayal

Little Cheung, directed by Feng Feng, is a true portrayal

of poverty in Hong Kong in the early 1950s. Despite being
only 10 years old at the time, Bruce Lee vividly played the
main little culprit role. His character is unwilling to be poor
and is still a little conscientious. The movie is one of Bruce
Lees early enlightening screen performances.
In the Face of Demolition, directed by Li Tie, poor people
as a whole form the collective main character of the film.
These people have no jobs or earn little money but all of
them are kind-hearted.
Sworn Sisters, directed by Wu Hui, tells the different
experiences of several maids from Guangdong Province. The
movie shows various strange things in society by portraying
the situation of lower class female professionals.

1970s, The Comedy Era

72 Guests is directed by Chu Yuan. Many guests live in

an old courtyard, and the owner of the courtyard intends
to drive the guests away taking advantage of the Police
Chiefs power, and turn it into a brothel, gambling den, and
adult entertainment center. Thus causes an eviction and
anti-eviction struggle.
Private Eyes is a movie directed by Michael Hui. The story
takes place in a detective agency, and the movie interprets
what goes on in the agency in a very humorous way.
Follow the Star head, directed by John Woo, is a simple and
joyful comedy action film, with no logical plot or story line.
Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung Man-Yuk in 2000 movie
In The Mood For Love.

The film festival has several criteria

for selecting movies. First, its organizers
want movies that are new to mainland
audiences, so films that have been
previously seen by such viewers were not
chosen. Second, in terms of the content,
t h e y h o p e t h e m o v i e s c a n p ro v i d e
moviegoers with a rich impression of
Hong Kong. These films include Village
House and 72 Guests, which have
passed on the memories of a generation
of Hong Kong people to succeeding
generation(s). To says, What the movies
present to the audiences is not the
fighting or killing present in commercial
movies, but our every day life, such as
the relationship between people and
neighborhoods, where we can see a lot
of human warmth.
Of all these movies, Tos personal
favorite is Private Eyes. He says, At that

Shing Kee Tea House, directed by Gui Zhihong, is about

a teahouse boss, who is involved in the game between the
police and the triad and has to choose between justice
and loyalty. The movie is regarded as the pioneer of Hong
Kongs triad gangster films.
The Secret, directed by Ann Hui, has integrated into a
compact feature film both the horror of suspense movies
and the emotions of those focused on ethical dilemmas.
The movie has been very well received in Hong Kong,
where it is breaking office records.
Made in Hong Kong, directed by Fruit Chen, is the tragic
story of a failed youth. The movie presents the rebellion
against the family, patriarchy and social power of Hong
Kong youth, as well as their alienation from a boring
existence and fear of death.

1990s, Shadows Behind the Bustling City

In Cage China, director Jacob Cheung focuses his lens

on the disadvantaged, calmly depicting the deplorable lives
of Hong Kongs lowest class citizens.
Father and Son, Allen Fong's first film, is one of the main
works of the Hong Kong New Wave cinema. The movie
has vividly portrayed the hopeful mentality of the strict
fathers in traditional Chinese society.
Akizuki, directed by Clara Law, tells a story of a Japanese
youth comes to Hong Kong to seek the true meaning of life.
After arriving in the city, he encounters a friend and through
this relationship finally understands his inner heart. The movie
describes the collision between and fusion of two generations.
Rouge, directed by Stanley Kwan, is a Hong Kong version of
Ghost.
Sparrow, directed by Johnnie To, tells a story of four
ordinary mens adventures in seeking freedom for the sake
of their favorite girls. It is Johnnies love letter addressed
to Hong Kong.
New Endless Love, directed by Derek Yee, who also
wrote the screenplay for the movie, tells a story of an
underappreciated musician inspired by an optimistic girl
who is terminally ill.
In Mood for Love, directed by Wong Kar-wai, tells the
story of an extramarital affair between a married man and
woman who are neighbors in the same apartment building.
The movie is regarded as Wongs most realistic film.

The movie tells a high IQ gangster tale that
happens in the new era. The story starts from a
valuable police emergency vehicle being hijacked
in the streets of Hong Kong, which plunges the
whole city into a security crisis. The inspiration of
the story comes from the U.S. President Barack
Obamas presidential campaign. Its script has been
carefully written and polished for five years, and
the movie has collected a great deal of little-known
first-hand information. The story has incorporates
material from almost all the Hong Kong security
apparatuses, including the Police Station, the
Independent Commission Against Corruption and
the Security Bureau. This is unprecedented among
Hong Kong movies.

The movie is a legendary Kung Fu story that takes
place in Chinas Chenjiagou. After going through
various hardships in Chenjiagou, a weird person
named Yang Luchan eventually becomes a Taichi
master and wins the heart of a beautiful woman.
Since the middle of the Qing Dynasty, China
confronted a continuous succession of internal and
external problems. Domestically, there were the
rebellions, while externally western powers intruded
into Chinas sovereignty following its defeat in the
first and Second Opium Wars. And all kinds of new
technologies brought by the industrial Revolution
came to China and had an overwhelming impact on
it. Traditions collapsed. Under this background, the
Taichi Master Yang Luchan appeared.

The movie is a classic Hong Kong cops and
robbers movie. The story revolves around
transnational theft. Chinas famous ancient
painting Fuchun Mountains disappears into
some foreign countries before the exhibition of
this painting is about to open. Hearing about
this news, gangsters and robbers from Japan and
England are all coming for the painting. The
international agent who has taken the blame of
the accident is also trying to get the painting
back to the motherland. How will they fight
with each other? And who will be the winner
at last? Its a battle of wits as well as Kongfu.

The inspiration of the movie comes from a magical
true story. A pretty nurse falls in love with a wealthy
young man by chance. As a love maniac, she then
begins to pursue him in various ways. Many funny
things naturally happen as she does this. Will the
love maniac be able to win over her lover? This
becomes the biggest element of suspense in the
movie. Director Ye Nianchen says that the film will
definitely give the audiences a refreshing surprise,
while telling them that people have to strive for
their happiness. Besides the plots, you can also find
many interesting and funny things in the movie, as
Love and Happiness come together.

Date: Nov. 30th

The movie is like a memoir. In 1942, a drought
in Henan Province triggers famine. While this
is happening, many other major events are
occurring around the world. The main story
line of the movie is about an ordinary person
who takes his family and flees from the famine
stricken area, only to lose them. After that
happens, he forces his way back through the
escaping masses and saves a little girl on the
road. Both of them are unaccompanied and
then begin to depend on each other. The film is
regarded as not only a new understanding of the
history of this period, but also as a tribute to it.
