Harpoon Cut and Pull Spear

Reduce NPT by performing multiple cut and pull operations in a single trip

The Baker Hughes Harpoon cut

and pull spear is a robust tool
designed for cutting and pulling
casing in operations associated
with plug and abandonment, slot
recoveries, and where cement bond
and scale build up are unknown. The
spear can be set and reset several
times, allowing multiple cut-andpull operations in a single trip for
reduced nonproductive time (NPT)
and improved probability of success.
Cutting performance is
also improved because the tool can
be used to apply tension during the
cutting operation.
The Harpoon spear features a
pack-off device as a means for
controlling circulation paths during
and after the cut. The tool can be
used to safely control the circulation
of hydrocarbons from the well in
the event that a pressurized zone
is exposed during the cutting
operation. In addition, the packoff device can be used to apply
hydraulic boost pressure below the
cut casing string to
aid in recovery.

Another differentiating feature is the robust

design. The spear is designed to handle and
transport maximum load to the cut casing.
The slips distribute the load evenly across
the casing inside diameter. The design
also supports loads in both directions,
accommodating the use of fishing jars.

The spear is run in with the cutting assembly

and it does not require a stop ring, allowing
the spear to be run to cut depth. Unlike
other tools on the market, the Harpoon
spear can engage the casing directly above
the cut, ensuring maximum force can be
distributed at the cut point. The tool is
easily set and released through mechanical
manipulation, simplifying operations with
hydraulic actuated motors, cutters, and
diagnostic tools.
