A skeleton in the
closet... literally!

Shortly after Byron Lindsay

brought in the pure seal ivory gavels
he found while cleaning out the now
defunct Glasgow chapter's I.O.O.F.
Hall, Shelly Sampson of the Laura
Rebekah Lodge No. 19 came into
Buzz headquarters and said, "You
gotta come see what else we found!"

In cleaning out a closet, there it
was: an authentic human skeleton.

According to some information
found whilst searching the web,
every Odd Fellows lodge had a
skeleton. Some were in boxes, some
in actual coffins, such as the one at
the Glasgow Odd Fellows Hall. As
more and more lodges closed, more
and more skeletons were forgotten
and left behind, sometimes nearly
scaring real estate agents to death.
The skeleton was medically
prepared per the process in the
1890's. According to Valley County
Sheriff Glen Meier, the cadavers
were used for medical studies at
universities and then the skeletons
were sold.

"They were people who had no
money for a proper burial," Sheriff
Meier explained, "so they donated Byron Lindsay contacted Valley County Sheriff Glen Meier to see exactly what to do
with skeleton that was talked away in a closet at the Oddfellows Hall in Glasgow.

Skeleton in the closet continued

their bodies to medical science."

The Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF)
fraternal organization was formed in the early 18th
century in England. They came together as a group
of men with no unifying trait other than to do good
by man. Their main goals were to support each other
and take care of the needy. In 1819, the first American
Lodge opened in Baltimore, Maryland during a time of
high unemployment and a yellow fever epidemic. The
newly ordained lodge took on as their mission to visit
the sick, relieve distress, bury the dead, and educate the
orphans.

As new Lodges opened, the Mother Lodge would
gift each new lodge with what was known as Regalia
and Paraphernalia, including a coffin or casket and a
skeleton.

While the IOOF keeps its secrets and doesnt reveal
the purpose of the skeletons, experts have suggested
the skeletons have something to do with the vow each
member takes to help others, specifically to bury the
dead.
In the ritual of the first degree, the candidate is
bound in chains, then blindfolded. The others form
a mock funeral procession where the candidate is the
deceased. When the blindfold is removed, the candidate
comes face to face with a real human skeleton that is
illuminated by lit torches on either side and he is invited
to meditate on death. For the candidate will be dying
to his old way of life and vowing to help those in need,
welcome the traveler, educate the orphans and bury the
dead.
And now the Valley County Sheriff Department
has a skeleton in the closet, waiting for proper burial as
an "unknown" in the Highland Cemetery.
"This has happened periodically with other
Oddfellow halls around the state," Sheriff Meier (and
Valley County Coroner) said after making some phone
calls to find out exactly what to do with the skeleton
lawfully.
For now the skeleton will remain at the Sheriff 's
Department until an anthropologist comes to Glasgow
to ascertain that it isn't Native American.
"By Antiquity Law, if this skeleton is Native
American, we can't bury it," Sheriff Meier explained,
adding that he doubts it is.
When viewing the skeleton Tuesday afternoon,
he asked me, "What do you think it was, a man or a
woman?"

One can see that the breast bone was removed during the
autopsy and then carefully stitched back together with wire.

After studying the skeleton for a brief time, I had to
answer: "I have no idea."

"Know how you can tell?" he asked.

I took a guess: "By the femur bone?"

"Feel right up here," he said, guiding my hand up to
the rear base of the skull. "Feel that knot right there?"

"Yeah," says I.

"It's a male," he said, adding, "I guess that's why us
guys are called 'knot heads'."

He figures this skeleton is of European descent and
after examining the teeth and the start of arthritis in
some of the joints, believes it was a man in his late 50s.

"But I'm no anthropologist," he said.

As for when the anthropologist arrives in Glasgow,
Sheriff Meier said we'll just have to wait and see. If the
sekelton is not Native American, a burial will take place.

As for the seal ivory gavels, they will find a happy
home at the Valley County Pioneer Museum.

And as for the rest of the IOOF memorabilia, Byron
is headed out with the load on Saturday morning to the
Sovereign Grand Lodge in Great Falls.
