SAP stands for Systems, Applications, Products in Data Processing founded in Germany in 1972 by five
ex-IBM engineers. SAP is the world largest Business software company and the world 3rd largest
independent software provider. Highly customizable using SAP's programming language ABAP/4
(Advanced Business Application program).
SAP is running on various Hardware and software architectures, most types of UNIX, Windows NT and
AS/400. SAP runs on various Databases Oracle, Adabas D, Informix,DB2 for UNIX, DB2/400,
Microsoft's SQL Server 6.0.
The R/3 architecture is comprised of application and database servers. The system can support an
unlimited number of servers and a variety of hardware configurations (The application servers host the
software and the database servers handle document updates and master file databases). SAP R/3
Enterprise is built on SAP Web Application Server (SAP Web AS) and integrates with the enterprise

SAP FI Module - where FI means Financial Accounting – essentially this SAP module delivers your

SAP CO Module - The CO stands for Controlling – basically the SAP Module which allows you to

SAP PS Module - PS is Project Systems – this SAP Module is where you can manage your projects,
large and small, including

SAP PM Module - where Plant Maintenance is the PM – this SAP module is where you maintain your
equipment (e.g. a machine, an oil rig, an aircraft etc), including

SAP MM Module - one of the most important SAP Modules where MM is Materials Management -
underpins the supply chain, including
• Requisitions

SAP QM Module - QM stands for Quality Management in this SAP module – improve the quality of

SAP BW Module - where BW stands for Business (Data) Warehouse which includes the following
main functions:

• Storage of the data in what are called Info providers
• Reporting (which uses Info providers)
SAP ABAP - is not really a module - it stands for Advanced Business Application Programming and
this is the structured programming language for custom development including reports.
