Contingency Operating Base Adder, Iraq - An Army Physical Fitness Test tends
to bring out the best in every Soldier. The APFT that the 108th QM CO gave on the
25th of January was no different. PFC Cory Olvey until recently was considered an
APFT failure for the 2-mile run event. On this day however he was determined to
change that. Earlier that morning he passed the sit-up and pushup events. He
told himself that he would need to save a “little gas” for the run. When the 2-mile
run event arrived he knew he was ready and was going to pass by any means
necessary. This would become far truer than even he realized. On the last leg of
the home stretch PFC Olvey somehow lost his right shoe! His battle buddy, PFC
Talley picked his shoe up while he continued to run toward the finish line. On
this day he accomplished a goal he had set for himself; to pass the 2-mile run
event, and he did so by any means necessary. PFC Olvey improved his overall 2-
mile run time by 2 minutes.
