Preface
The phrase social service is used by many the world
over and encompases a wide gamut of activities aimed at improving the
life and living conditions of people in many communities. Not all human
beings are born to strong, intelligent and capable parents. While in the
animal kingdom survival of the fittest or protected is the rule, in the case of
human beings, leaving those born to parents who can protect and bring up
their children safely and well, all others born to weak parents, in the
social rings, or communities, ethnic groups or geographical situations, life
becomes miserable and help is needed for them starting from physical
growth from childhood to adulthood and later on in meeting the challenges
of life. Since millenniums, human population has grown all over the world.
The more ancient the countries are, the more the population and so more
variety of social problems came up. Parallel to the growth of population,
human intellect and ingenuity has also kept pace and through the human
quest for knowledge, great inventions in material science have come about
making living easier for all. Similarly deep contemplations in the oriental
world have uncovered the many mysteries of the universe visa vis the
human life. We now have two very broad aspects of the human life in
the world. One the highly developed material aspect and the other a
highly developed spiritual thought about what is life and what a human
being is.
It is easy to quickly notice the difference between the haves and
have-nots. However it is not so easy to find out the difference between

S E V A

B H A R A T H I

people of helpful nature and those who are not. Bharateeya scriptures,
teachings and learning have from very ancient times laid stress on human
beings helpful to others who are in need. Similarly many great personalities
of the world have propagated the need for helpful attitudes and thoughts to
their flock. Based on these preachings innumerable people have extended
help in many forms to all those who are in need, from the ancient times. It
is therefore an eternal obligation in the world for the haves, to
materially and spiritually support and help the needy sections. Thus
there is a perennial need for service or help to fellow human beings.
How can this service or help be extended? From time to time, depending
upon the development of culture in communities, governments and people
get motivated and render help to the needy sections. History and Ithihasapuranas of Bharath are replete with memorable stories of how spiritual and
material help is extended to fellow humans. While in olden days philosopher
kings extended service as a way of governance and living in the recent
history, this work is done by designated institutions, government approved
bodies and philanthropic institutions. As the global reach has become easier
with the growth of technology, new areas of help needed are quickly
identified world over and relief and rehabilitation is rushed through
institutions and large bodies of organizations. Thus disasters due to natural
calamities, epidemics and accidents affecting large number of human beings
have become part of relief efforts needed in many communities.
Through spread of information speedily, people with resources big and
small come forward to render help with money and materials on many
occasions for identified sections. Organised way of extending help to the
needy has come to be accepted all over the world. (This way even individuals

have the satisfaction of being helpful to the needy) While they cannot on
their own deliver help and service. As the need is spread over large areas,
besides the where-with-all for social service demands, manpower needs
have also grown considerably. This has given great impetus to volunteering
for social service and be a part of the delivery chain. Rashtriya
Swayamsevak Sangh is a voluntary organization working in Bharat since
19027creating awareness in the people of Bharath, the need for coming
together as one people of the country rising above narrow considerations
of caste, creed, religion and regions for the welfare of the ancient
motherland. Over years it has created on large force of volunteers, who
have dedicated themselves for the services of the country without expecting
any thing for themselves in return.
Seva Bharathi is the service wing of RSS and has created large groups
of such volunteers who are highly dedicated and spare time and effort for
rendering social service among local communities on a systematic and
regular basis. As and when the need arises, priority is given to calamity and
disaster relief in proximity.
There are many occasions in the past decades when yeomen service was
rendered throughout the country. As ongoing social services for needy
people, Seva Bharathi has established numerous service projects all over
Bharath and local groups of seasoned volunteers man these setups. Areas
of work are identified after thorough study of the community: help is
rendered, with the financial and other support offered by large-hearted
Philanthropists and institutions. Money is spent very carefully and maximum
utilization of such resources is the watchword. Broadly identified areas for
continuous services are primary education for the poorest of the poor and

health care for unreached in slums and interior villages and hamlet.
This booklet contains an over view of such service projects undertaken by
Seva Bharathi of western Andhra Pradesh. The scope is huge and the need
is vast. While temptation is great to look at several needs of the community
and run in to despair on account of the enormity of the need, it will be
worthwhile to focus on limited areas and render sustained help, so that
Bharath can be transformed into healthier, better educated, informed
country. Philanthropists and donors can put in their shoulders to the wheel,
in this enormous task, It is the experience of Seva Bharathi that such work
definitely creates a dent in the otherwise bleak picture in our country.

Nagaraj. R,
President, Seva Bharathi

Vaidehi Ashramam
Affection, care & Discipline makes success

Vaidehi, in Sanskrit means Sita devi, adopted by the king janaka of

Ramayana and that is what Vaidehi ashram is about. Orphans as they
are called are scattered away from the families, from the love of
mother, caring of the father, the security and the bonding of the
relations. The children are victims of an unfortunate incident or accident
suffering for no fault of theirs.
Way back in 1990 a doctor found a girl child at a filling station and
brought her to his home. The local community together decided to
take care of the girl. That was how the foundation for the Ashramam
was laid. Since then the Ashramam a unit of Seva Bharathi has stood
for affection and care, that the community has in itself and discipline
and principles.
Lakshmi is an 8 year kid, she is Colouring her drawing book, she loves
it, with the beautiful butterflies and repeats her matajis dialogue silence,
silence in between with stick in her hand. When asked what she will
be when grown up, pat comes the reply Kiranbedi.
Uncle (President) Kalam is their favourite and his words says the
mataji (warden) Dream dream dream coz dreams lead to
thoughts and thoughts to actions ring inspiration and motivation. The
girls aim high while they are firmly landed on the ground. There are
52 girls in vaidehi Ashram today but with a heart to accomodate many.

physical work out with a blend yoga and exercise then they are ready to
school with their lunch box.
Sharing and caring love for one another, all the kids are at their best in
Singing & Dance apart from their studies. It is no less than a festive
occasion when their elder sister pays visit to her nostalgic home. She
was happily married from the Ashram. The kids are happy with Krishna
the new born baby of their elder sister.
The children are back from school at 4.45pm. The next 2 hours is the
time for the kids, after their snacks for a drill and games. Then 7.45 pm
they sit for dinner later homework and study hour. When the clock
strikes10 p.m. its time to say good night with the chant of shanti mantra.
At a recent function to commemorate the birth centenary of Sri Guruji
Golwalkar Vaidehi Ashram children performed Classical dance, Bharata
Natyam before a 700 strong software professional who were enthralled.
Such is the confidence of the children of Vaidehi.
The Girls have proved their mettle in the academics and the co-curricular
activities. With a well equipped library the children browse through their
fascinating world of books. The children are trained in martial arts to
bring in the spirit of individuality and security.
Its a tough time for the parents and family to bid farewell during the
wedding of the girl of the family. We were no exceptionwhen 3 of the
young girls were married to suitable brides. Its a testimony to what a
community can do together.

''GOKULAM is the place where Krishna

blossomed from an ordinary cowheard boy
in to one with extraordinary talents. It is
only a matter of chance that we give to a
kid and he will come out with flying colors.''

Annapoornamma Vidyarthi Vasathi Gruham a unit of Seva Bharathi is

an effort, where ordinary boys deprived of childhood are nurtured to
bring out skills in them. Some of the children are destitutes, some from
economically weaker sections and others from socially weaker sections
of the society. But here they are all together and brothers.
The main focus ofcourse will be on the children who have come from
disintegrated families and are victims to the local social problems.
Right from the day one its been a nourishing of moments of joy and
wonderful experience with the children. From a humble start of 4 boys
(4th sept 94) today this innovative effort has been able to tender the
talents of 18 children all of them boys. The boys are selected from
Kurnool, Anantapur and Cuddapah districts. From 1st class to intermediate
and performing wonders, revealing their inner talents these children like

Bhakta Kannappa Gurukulam

A Home for Chenchu Boys at Gokavaram

The tribal hero who sacrificed his eyes for the lord shiva, Bhakta
kannappa and later went on to become the greatest devotee of the Lord,
is a Chenchu. The Govt has designated the Chenchus as one of the
most Primitive tribal groups in India. Chenchus are still dependent on the
hunting or procuring fruits from forests / forest produces. But why has
such a tribe full of Hospitatlity & warmth reverted in to the Primitive
practices. Thats what is the question we encountered? And the story of
this Tribal residential & vocational home starts exactly here. There are
1,000s more such heroes yet unrecognised and unappreciated in the
Chenchus.
Now that Seva Bharathi has infrastructure for taking care of their welfare
and trying to reach them we moved to Gokavaram, Atmakoor mandal
from Srisailam. The present strength of the home is 50 Chenchu boys
with a chenchu warden who is the only 10th class pass-out when he
came to us and is now in his graduation final year.
On the day of the inauguration Nov 18th 1999 the local ITDA PO was
invited and he said These are the most vagabond boys that you are
dealing with, i am afraid if they can stay here even for a couple of
weeks I wish you all the best in your efforts that was his experience.
Today we have 50 chenchu Boys not just staying with us but learning
Carpentary, Masonry. What surprised us was the sea of talents and

15

their grasping power here is what they did; for the last year Ganesh
festival the boys made their own clay idol of Ganesha a perfect ganesha
idol just looking at the picture of Lord Ganesha from a book.
After all these years of building up trust and confidence in the Chenchu
children today the boys are winning medals at district level. The district
administration is surprised to note the results. Class 7 board exams district
2nd for two years were from Bhakta Kannappa Gurukulam and even
Boxing, shotput, running were won with 1st and 2nd places by Chenchu
boys at Juniours District sports meet.
Along with education and sports Bhakta Kannappa Gurukulam has setup
a Voccational training Institute initially to cater to Chenchu boys from
the Gurukulam and later to the Chenchus at large. Carpentary, Masonry,
Electrician, welding are being part of the course from Sept03. Now the
next phase of training is a Technical training center for Chenchus thast
on the cards and is much needed.
To also go a step ahead and provide succour from diseases Seva Bharathi
is running a Mobile dispensary touching the 34 Chenchu hamlets, the
only source of Medicalaid, Bhakta Kannappa Mobile Dispensary
supported by the Ministry of tribal affairs, Govt of India. Attached to it is
the Distribution of nutritious food to the T.B affected Chenchus on an
Anti-TB reatment drive which resulted in 95% cure rate saving 43
precious chenchu lives out of 45 identified cases.
The boys are good at hunting /Archery too, who knows theres a
Rajavardhan Rathore in them, or the technical trining may produce an
engineer out of the chenchus so next time along with Bhakta kannappa
we remember a professional from the Tribe.

A Home for Poor Boys at Jagityal

A resolve to provide education to the villages,

especially the first

generation literates that have been, illiterate for generations has moulded
in to the institution Sri Valmiki Awasam - Seva Bharathi.
Children from 25 villages that are from the most backward illiterate
families, 40 of them carefully selected are being provided with qualitative
education. The Children are the first Generation literates not in their
families but the village / hamlet itself.
Narendra is a child from a small village Kalluru in Karimnagar Dist. He
hails from a very poor family and always dreamt of making it big, he did
not even know what big is. The boy couldnt care less for his parrents so
offered to work for the Dora (Zamindar) in his house. The volunteers of
RSS took him to the Valmiki awasam. Today Narendra is a student with
distinction at every step, pursuing his MBBS he has made everybody
proud.
There are many more Narendras in our daily life all they need is just a
small apppreciation and a little bit of help. Mahesh is a kid in the village
Potharam. He used to loiter around and involve in small thefts with his
'gang' of friends. Hes now completed his 10th, won the state level prize
in Yoga. He wants to be software professional. The young mind is now
worried about his childhood friends. His aim to get them back to school.

lifetime. The Affection
Home has spun wonders with 13 children now youngmen ofcourse
have settled down in their lives. Out of which 1 is pursuing his MBBS
and 2 their MCA, 2 more in their Engineering.
The impact is not restricted to the hostels alone but extends back to their
home inspiration the kids themselves. In the three villages the kids
themselves have been successful in de-addicting their parents, influencing
the fellow friends in to small things like taking bath daily, attending school,
small songs and shlokas.
The awasam has been working with the same resolve since August
1992. Located in a temporary shed courtesy, Sriram Sagar Project, the
home for the deserving children from backward, illiterate, disintegrated
families has been a successful model. The home now is a nurturing
place for athletics, academic careers and cultural activities thus making
the kids complete citizens that have the urge to contribute back to the
society in whatever capacity they can.

The boys have made a mark at school and out of school. They have
scored medals in all India essay writing (juniors). Our heroes are at
their best in athletics (have a distinction in athletics at South-India meet,
Kabaddi & Yoga conducted by Vidya Bharathi).
The boys are on their way to prove themselves. There are 3
differentlyabled boys, yes they are truly. Now with a strong confidence;
they are ready to take on any challenge on par with their co-students.
No body infact treats them as handicapped and thats what is the strength.
To say it loud & again one of our students is an engineering graduate.

giving a complete knowledge and support so that women stand on their
own. The Vivekananda Vrithi Vidya Kendram is run by Seva Bharathi.
For the past 15 years, the training center has been able to bring light in
the lives of the 100s of trainees. Their male counterparts are also
counseled towards de-addiction and the anti-liquor campaign has also
yielded good results. The women are made aware of the current issues
concerning them through discussion on issues impacting with the help of
Bhajans.
Thanks to SBH today the center boasts of latest machines to train on
technology for the current market. A more important thing of mention is
their thrift. The women save their earning in the thrift groups. The
activity includes putting their money together, money for thrift and rotation
of the same money for utility among themselves. The group has been
active with a membership of 70 for the past 8 years is worth a mention.

It is not just one more vocational training center. The trainees are
organized to co-ordinate activities of much use to all of them. Women,
needy and helpless are motivated, trained in vocational courses like fashion
designing, pickles, soaps, phenyl making and house-keeping. Women
from the slums have been trained so far, more than half of those trained
stand independent and lead a dignified life powered with the training in
hand.
Seva bharathi has co-ordinated with Trust Govinda Trust, to
provide a loan for setting up their own mini, micro enterprises. This
micro-credit empowers them to start their own small ventures which
has been a great success so far.
A future expansion awaits. Repair and construction of the building
to accomodate more trainees is on cards. The Kendra plans to empower

BUILDING VOLUNTARY NETWORKS

Children moving around with untidy and scantly

clad clothes, open drain overflowing, this is the
common scene when one visits the unlimited slums
irrespective of their geographical locations. Such
unhygienic setting spreads disease and robs the slum
dwellers of their precious hard-earned income. Also
one more observation made by Seva bharathi volunteers is that any activity
can sustain only if it is taken up and owned by the local people. Even
after half a century of freedom we have such slums in the cities which
should be engines of development but are exactly oppoiste. But they
today end up as undeveloped islands of poverty, diseases and
unemployment.
There are an approximate 1200 and odd slums in the twin cities, after a
detailed and observative study the resultant is Vaidehi Kishori Vikas
Yojana. The scheme shall have its administrative headquarters at Vaidehi
Seva samithi, Saidabad; launched by Sri Sitaram Kedaliya, Akhila
bharatha Seva pramukh in Jan 05, this is an effort to bring self reliance,
health, education and awareness to the young and the old alike in the
slums. The young volunteers in the age group 12-18 and especially girls
shall be selected and trained, to equip them with information as well as
the motivation to be the catalyst for the change.
In the first phase of the scheme 25 youngsters are selected and trained
in Vocational skills, Non-formal education, literacy campaigns, health
and hygiene, good food habits and diet, Simple physical work out including
Yoga. Simple educative and entertaining stories, songs, folk arts etc.,
are also part of volunteers training. The scheme demands 3 hours of
daily volunteering when he / she shall make 3 visits to the allotted slums.
The young volunteer goes about building relationships as well as bridges
towards development and shall grow as a nucleus for development
activities.

Seva Bharathi has 5 such special schools for the Child Laborers at
in Mahaboobnagar dist. These schools are an effort not only successfully
organized but also transforming the little hands that work into blooming
smiles. The schools bridge, the children from working in cotton mills
and fields to the schools. Thanks to the efforts of Seva bharathi some
3692 children have directly benefited by the project while 7000 children
have been mainstreamed or joined into reggular schools, while 30 children
destitutes have been adopted in to Seva bharathis affection Homes.
Since sept 9th 03 Seva Bharathi has been in the campaign for

employers and convincing them, not to employ, children below 16 years
as their duty to the society.
With an extensive campaign for
sensitizing the parents and
employers on the evils of child
labour also the need for the kids
to have their right to education
has been taken up. The campaign
has been designed as a one to one
sharing session and not as a mass

The RBCs are residential schools for boys and girls who have
been selected after an exclusive survey by Seva bharathi volunteers
covering 45 villages and thandas / tribal hamlets. The campaign is to
train and motivate children as well as parrents for child rights.
The boys and girls now are no more child labourers but students
learning by innovative playful methods reciting shlokas, songs and also
dance to the folk recipes. They are so quick, and so inquisitive that, they
will not need 9 months to bridge them to local schools but even lesser.

spearhead the literacy campaign

through the sign language that we
exchanged the ideas. They speak only kollam a language of the Kollam
tribe. After a year we could not only teach them alphabets of Telugu but
they had some surprises for the govt.ITDA officials. They built a school
for Seva Bharathi Ekal vidyalay, a precious thatched hut. Thanks to the
efforts of Sevabharathi volunteers which has instilled a lot of confidence
in the tribals.
Persistent efforts have won a lot

hamlets / Thandas where one

Ekal Vidyalayas in 102 such
places of 5 Districts. This small
effort had helped 4030 students learn alphabets and step into primary
education who otherwise would have been another generation of child
labourers & illiterates.
The Children were not just taught to read and write but also motivated to
learn from their surroundings. Equipped with a curriculum tailor made to
suit the local surroundings Sevabharathi has contributed to developing
their personality inclusive of extracurricular activities. The Ekal

but act as a catalyst for social development. He is and would be the
center for all the development activity in the village.
Venkatadripalli, a small village in Anantapur Dist., sent three (3) students
to Navodaya Vidyalaya. A credit the local people attribute to Seva

such schools.
For the Next one year there has been a demand for 300 such Schools in

Sri Ramakrishna Vidyalayam

Campaign for Total Literacy

Chanting of hymns, national songs reverberate in this remote village

surrounded by around 22 lambada tribal hamlets infested with heavy
extremist activity. A breakthrough achieved through an effort of Seva
Bharathi through Ramakrishna Vidyalay.
Machupahad is a Village panchayat 20 km from state highway but a
drive there takes 1 hrs there as Naxals have been forcing illiteracy
and liquor on the villages and not allowing infrastructure development
for the region. This was four years ago before Seva Bharathi took up
the community development initiative today the village has a blak topped
smooth road and signs of development are creeping in.
Sri Ramakrishna Vidyalay has 126 Children on the rolls, majority of them
lambadas. All the five teachers are locals and have been effective in
educating the children and their families. Seva bharathi School as it is
referred to in the village has been performing quite well. The boys &
girls of the vidyalaya add colour to all the village functions (like Vinayaka
Chaturdi etc.) and lead from the front.

S E V A

E D U C A T I O N

B H A R A T H I

The children are good at co-curricular activities and expertise in their

native song & dance. Seva bharathi schools promote the local language
& native arts apart from increasing the standard of learning for the
child. The school also is the center for a host of community development
activities like medical camps.
The children of the vidyalay have been the change makers or reformers
of the sort through a small play, a skit enacted on (Kodi pandem)
betting on hens, which made a tremendous impact on the villagers. It
has moved the villagers and sent across the message; addictions can
be eliminated.
The interesting thing is that the village has only 5 thandas in the next
years the other 7 thandas are to be covered. Today a total of 200
children benefit from the school. Apart from the numerous adults that
are motivated through cultural activities and rural folk dramas.

Kollampally, the Village is a picturesque setting with a mountain on

northern side, and just in front of it is the Seva bharathi school as it is
known for the villagers, Keshava Sishu mandir. The school located in a
perfect setting, has been the nucleus of the developmental activity in the
village ever since its establishment in 1990.
The village got its name from the fact that once it had lots of water
bodies. The main profession in the village is Agriculture, carpentery,
pottery, Gold smiths, Bamboo Craftsmanship, cobblers, Washer men,
Barbers, Weavers, Masons, Beedi Workers, Cattle Breeders and
labourers also live there. This region falls in low rain falls zone. Agriculture
and Plantations are irrigated from Bore wells. Poverty and illiteracy
used to be the common face of it here. Untouchability and petty fights
used to be the name of the day. The Banjara tribesmen live in the nearby
hills. But all this was bound to change with one initiative.
The Children have brought about a change; they have been the
instruments of change. They have mastered the art of thrift and today
they have shown the path of savings to the village. The effort which
started as a lesson to the children grew into a movement today binding
the village into a developmental model village. As a result the village
now has its own village development committee guided by Grama

A Nucleus for development

Kandukurti is a small village in Nizamabad Dist., located on the border

of A.P. & Maharastra. The Village is a junction to the surrounding 37
villages, poverty striken and craving for minimal medical aid. The Shiva
temple built by the queen Ahalyabai Holker on the Triveni Sangam of
Godavari, Manjeera & Haridra rivers stands mute spectator for the
backwardness. Seva bharathi decided to take up the cause of the village
not just for the sake of it but for a plethora of reasons. The village stands
evidence to the history of thousands of years. The Village is sanctified
more as it is the ancestral place of the founder of the R.S.S. Dr.
Keshavarao Baliram Hedgewar.
Seva Bharathi has taken up the project which would stand integrated
and sustainable. The organisation has initailly established a Primary
school which now has a total strength of 197 students covering 4 villages
around. Adding to the school (Educational) is medical aid through medical
camps. Next came the renovation of the local Sri Ram temple which
stands testimony to the neglect and remoteness of the village. This village
falls on the border of Andhra and Mahrashtra which is also a factor in its
being neglected.

Abhyasika

Need :- Thousands of people stay in slums (seva basthis) of urban

India migrating from the poverty striken villages in search of a living.
They settle down in small pieces of land. A family usually is forced to
live in a small, one room hut. It is in such a small, congested set-up that
all the members of the concerned family are compelled to perform their
respective activitivies. The general atmosphere and environment in such
basthis, particularly in the evening and night is noisy. Students find it
difficult to study peacefully.
The concept of Abhyasika (Study Room) :- Abhyasika is a studentcentered activity, attempting to find a solution to the difficulties faced by
the students residing in seva basthis. Study room facility is located near
or in the seva basthi.
Government schools or community halls where no activity is carried out
during late evening are selected for this activity. Students from the seva
basthi attend the Abhyasika and study there between say, 6-8pm. Here
they can study and complete their homework in a peaceful manner. In
this respect study rooms differ from tuition classes. No regular classroom
type teaching is conducted in Abhyasikas.
The supervisors solve difficulties faced by the students. Students are
seated according to their standards in schools. A supervisor or two ensure
that peace is maintained in the group under their care. Attendance is
recorded every day. If a student remains absent consecutively for 2-3

S E V A

three days, some worker visit his home to enquire about the reasons for
absence. Progress of the students is monitored periodically. Prayers,
patiotic songs stotras etc. are chanted at the beginning and at the end of
the day's work.
Other activities :- Periodic meetings of parents /guardians, bookbanks, periodic medical check-up, annual gathering and social functions
like Raksha Bandhan, Bharatmatha Pooja Divas are organised.
Achievements :- In the academic year 2004-2005 we have organised
two Abhyasika Kendras (Study Room centers). Students of class VI to
X have studied in these centers. Degree and PG students (boys and
girls) offered their services as honorary volunteers. A number of
behavioral changes in the students have been noticed e.g. punctuality,
regular attendance, academic progress etc. The parents/guardians
developed keen interest in the education of their wards.
Expansion :- Based on the above achievements and experience we
would like to organise more centers in the academic year 2005-2006.
For running these centers the financial expenditure per month per center
will be as given below.
Expenditure for running 1 Abhyasika per month : Rs.750/We request the people to join with us for the upliftment of socially and
economically backward students.

The deficiency of Braille
literature force the children to
rely on pre-recorded audio
lessons. Despite wonderful
learning abilities the kids are
discouraged to take up mathematics and other subjects which the so
called normal children take up. Every year number of visually challenged
students miss their exams, just because there are no scribes to write for
them. Seva Bharathi wanted to take this brief but qualitative intervention.
After learning from the deficiencies in the system, it was resolved to
provide the children with readers (to read out and record the lessons on
audio cassettes) and writers(to write down the exams for the differentlyabled while they dictate whatever they have learnt)
Initially the aim is to reach 11 hostels of the differently-abled (visually
challenged) and 4 hostels for the physically challenged in the twin cities
and later on reach the 51 hostels across the state. On an estimate there
16 lakh physically challenged in A.P.
A visually challenged child is more inquisitive and more receptive as he
relies on his ears more and treats precious every little bit of information
provided. Thanks to Seva Bharathis efforts today there is an Eye bank
comming up in association with the Pushpagiri peetham and huge
awareness programmes on eye care are being taken up for teachers
and professionals too.

Dots for Hope

Stop TB Campaign
TB : The Poor Mans Disease
Do you know that TB kills
more people than any other
disease ? Almost 1 life every 3
seconds! Thats why it is called
the deamon of the diseases.
23 rd March is an annual
Sevabharathi event in Medak
district. The World TB day
celebration jointly organised
every year by Seva bharathi and the District TB Society, Dept of health
has been the focus for sensitization and awareness building in the media,
teachers, village elders and the private practitioners.
The Background : In the Health sector Seva Bharathi has been active
in treating the slum and remotely located needy people. And incidentally
these are the people most affected by TB (Tuberculosis). And the first
effort to fight the dreaded disease was initiated in the year 2000 with cooperation from the then collector of Medak Smt. Shanta Kumari. The
District had a prominence also as it was selected as the pilot project for
implementing the NTCP and then the RNTCP which for obvious reasons
wasnt successful. Seva Bharathi volunteered to supplement the govt.
efforts. Medak district according to government statistics was 3,116
strong in TB but the actual figures are much higher.
The Journey : The figures
made us think and the initiative
was launched on 8th Jan 00
with a mass rally for sensitizing
and capacity building in
sangareddy town. People;
doctors, teachers, small shop
owners, students,

from all over the district; as
Community health workers and
we began training them in TB
eradication efforts. Seva
Bharathi volunteers were
trained as DOTS providers,
technicians and supervisors.
The District TB unit of seva
bharathi prepared a feasibility report and a programme for further action.
Training and Capacity building : Initially 300 volunteers have
been trained as DOTS and the Supervisors to take the mission ahead.
Now the figure stands at 450 and still growing. The regular-training
program is a mix of updates on TB, review and field experiences. And
its a monthly sharing get together.
The concerntration is on two zones Mirzapoor, Sangareddy with 32 PHCs.
The organization has a full-fledged network in the two zones.
Thanks to the efforts of 100's of volunteers, the district collector
approached Seva Bharathi to recognise them with ID cards recognising
them as community health volunteers a token of appreciation for the
continued efforts.
The district Collector was surprised to learn that all the volunteers
were voluntary and bear all the expenses of their travel and work. Till
date a total of 1091 cases were taken up and 685 treatment completed,
with 285 under treatment the total cure rate is 68.5%.
Seva Bharathi also has a DOTS based treatment which attained 95%
cure rate at Gokavaram Kurnool district. Distribution of nutritious food
to the T.B affected Chenchus on an Anti-TB Treatment drive has resulted
in saving 43 precious chenchu lives out of 45 identified cases.
Seva Bharathi District TB Society appeals to one and all
to come forward and support us to support a failing life.

COMMUNITY

INTERVENTION

Sahyog Bharathi
Right Intervention: Right Information at Right time

The Telephone at Sevabharathi office has been ringing continuously, a

caller calls up desperately for assistance. The caller from a small village
in Kurnool district is desperate for 3 units of AB ive group blood. This
is a regular affair here at Sevabharathi wherein on an average 3-5 calls
are received from desperate parents or guardians of the patients. But
how to assist them the blood supply in the city is very very limited, despite
the fact that there are roughly about 70 blood banks and an equal number
of voluntary agencies working to connect the supply and demand. Taking
advantage of the situation the blood banks charge anywhere between
Rs.300 to Rs.900 or even Rs.1000 (per unit) for rare blood groups.
A person from villages when he steps into a big city like Hyderabad is
totally confused and is looking desperately for simple assistance.
Assistance like where to go, whom to approach and how to approach.
This is where we have to work, work to connect the people. People with
rural background or even people from the city who have little or no
knowledge of the blood banks, diagnostic services and specialized or to
say super specialized hospital services. With a hint of information the

COMMUNITY

INTERVENTION

needy can travel from one end of the city to the other such is the
desperation so its just enough to provide the right information at the right
time.
Sahyog Bharathi a voluntary agency under Sevabharathi intends to give
a helping hand to the needy. Providing information about the services
available and how to avail them is the main activity of the organization.
The organization has already prepared a database of all the services
available. It has also prepared a referral network of doctors that will
subsidise or allow free diagnosis to patients referred from Sahyog
Bharathi.
Most of the hospitals allow one or some even do not allow even one
attendant to stay with the patient. But when they bring the patient from
such long distances as Adilabad, Nizamabad, Cuddappah, Anantapur
there will be a minimum of 3-5 relatives accompanying them. So Sahyog
Bharathi intends to setup a shelter for the relatives of the patients
accompanying them.
Sahyog Bharathi has also been working on employment front. It
has been connecting with organizations and employees so that the
unemployed with skills are benefited. The main intention of the
programme is to show employment opportunities to the skilled do
not stay unemployed.

Vandemataram Foundation:
A better School a beeter Society
New Freedom struggle against illiteracy
India Vision 2020! With literacy rate of 61% national average
and ranked at the bottom of Human Development Index, does it
sound possible atleast near to possibility?
A developed India by 2020 is possible only through peoples
participation and children are the nucleus of this
transformation - H.E. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, doesnt it seem
hopefully better. This is what has motivated the Foundation a
unit of Seva Bharathi to fight for the child rights and contribute
its mite in the India 2020 vision of the President Kalam.
What we do is just visit the school, post office, anganwadi center
in the village once in a while without actually intruding says a
volunteer of the Vandemataram Foundation. Nobody knows better
than the villagers themselves who today not only look up to the
volunteers but act as a volunteer themselves.
Thats a simple story of simple success by a few young volunteers all
in their 20s. The visits have changed lives of the children and their
schools in the villages. All it needed was communityparticipation and
it started with I and us. It has been one year of achievement
however small though until Oct 2005, the volunteers worked out
their mission and are still on their way. With a total of 400 volunteers
toiling day in and day out selfless the mission seems to be in the
range of sight.
Networking schools for social transformation is the slogan of the
foundation, with a resolve to fulfil the Millenium development goals
that have been promised to be achieved by 2015.The foundation
with the inspiration of His Excellency the President of India is
working for the betterment of children and their education. A new
freedom struggle this time against the poverty and illiteracy is
influencing 100 schools in interior Varadannpet zone of Warangal
District.

The dropout rate has fallen steep down and the attendance of
teachers climbing up and the performance of school as a unit is
spreading smiles. Awarding the schools that perform, rewarding the
teachers that achieve through their students and encouraging schools
that nurture the future leaders for a better tommorrow the foundation
has taken great strides in making a difference.
The world is struggling against many things among others are illiteracy
and child rights exploitation which directly affect the world tomorrow.
Vandemataram signifies a struggle with one voice a battle cry for
freedom that ultimately achieved the right of the common man, his
basic rights. That is just the reason why this project is named
Vandemataram Foundation.
Now its just the time to rise in one voice for a battle on illiteracy and
child abuse in whatever form. The school is the nucleus of the nations
heart and a child tommorrows citizen is moulded here. The foundation
would like to attempt a change right at the roots of the structure, for a
better tomorrow.
The movement Vandemataram has sprouted in Oct 2005 in
waradannapet, warangal district after looking at the enormous
numbers of child labourers and child marriages. Thanks to a the wise
times from H.E. President Kalam, he has not only touched our hearts
but moved us deep down. Today there are millions of young and old
alike whom he inspired and we are proud to be in the league of
inspired and implimenting. To make India strong enough to face a
tougher tommorrow and a begining to a happy new India a school is
where we started to work.

In India on an average 22% of upper primary schools are 3 k.m.

away from the habbitations and 50% dropout even before reaching
class 5.

Swami Vivekananda Awasam,

Inspired by the smiles of Childhood
Working with Child rights since 1989 one lesson that we have learnt
has been that on an average 50% of children dropout of schools
even before the reach their 5th standard. Swamy vivekananda
awasam is an initiative to encourage child education and not just child
literacy. Providing children a congenial atmosphere, for atleast those
who perform well in a screening test and also qualify as needy. These
children all selected from the govt primary schools shall be trained in
respective areas including sports and games as well as academics. In
the first stage of selection a total of 26 childrn have been selected,
and a total of around 100 children will be accomodated in the 5 acre
well built home. The Awasam shall also act as a hub of various
community development initiatives including training programmes to
the volunteers at various levels.
With initiative from the local community volunteers of Seva Bharathi
approached all the primary schools and selected children that are in
need of a scholarship. Students who perform well in education and
sports were given priority taking into account their family financial
status.
Seva Bharathi has been working in Medak dist since March 2000 in
the areas of medical aid, providing the crucial T.B eradication drugs
and counseling the TB affected families through the Seva Bharathi
DOTS programme. Complimenting the Govt efforts for eradicating
the most deadly disease that cripples national productivity. It is in
2006 that Seva Bharathi volunteers decided to take another initiative
with the community participation and identify the needy for a home.

Sandipani Awasam
(Child Labour Rehabilitation Project)
For the thousands of little hands that work and thousands more
rescued by volunteers there is no gaurantee that they would be safe
and away from child labour. It is our resolve to ensure their safety.
The cause Child labour eradication and the place Mahaboobnagar
(Palamoor) district the beneficiaries 80 genuinely poor, deserving
children in the clutches of child labour. An effort to bringout inherent
talents from the genuinely poor & tanlented.
Seva Bharathi, Palamoor
Sandipani Awasam a result of the perpetual efforts by Seva Bharathi
since 2002 in the campaign against Child labour. The effort involved
building a network across 60 NGOs that organised bridge course
centers for child labourers. The little hands that have toiled have now
been performing on par in education and sports with other children.
Thanks to APUS a teachers association & Seva Bharathi volunteers
today there is a mechanism to pick the talented needy.
Its a known fact and official figures show that 37% of children
rescued & put in rehabilitation homes end up at square one. The
endeavor is to educate and give a chance to the under-dogs to prove
their mettle. A total of 80 children all selected from the Child labour
rehabilitation centers, from around Mahaboobnagar district are the
beneficiaries. The children are genuinely poor and needy as also are
truly deserving. Mahaboobnagar incidentally happens to be the one
with highest child labour figures.
As a continuing effort of the Child labour rehabilitation programmes,
Seva Bharathi has decided to set up a permanent hostel for the
genuinely, talented and economically weak students of
Mahaboobnagar dist. Based on the results of the talent search exam,

59

fit students are selected and are awarded with scholarships to

pursue their studies. The talent search exam includes a
combination of psychomatic, mathematic and general aptitude
developed in association with the Hyderabad Psychologists
Association. Not just education but the children would also
recieve technical & skill training at Sandipani Awasam.
The campaign for eradication of child labour paired with
alternative education and innovative methods has made the
children who earlier were child labourers and now stay with Seva
Bharathi to get back to school. The kids impressed upon the
authorities to the extent that they had to invite them to the
Republic day parade in state capital.
Now after one year training in their rehabilitation homes, Seva
Bharathi has picked them up on their merit and for the past one
year they are pursuing their studies at Sandipani Awasam. And
luckily its a group on good-natured, partiotic NRIs that
strengthened Seva Bharathis hands by suporting financially for
their studies, The Palamoor NRI Forum.
Seva Bharathi runs 5 Bridge course centers, which have gained a
benchmark standard in child labour rehabilitation. The efffort has
benefited some 6,000 children and contributed to a sustained
campaign and awareness in the district.
Sandipani Awasam would house 100 poor but talented students
who otherwise would end up as bonded / child labourers for the
rest of their lives in future. Apart from the activities for the benefit
of Children the home would also act a a nerve center for future
Community development programmes. Inspired by this effort
another Home for such deprived children is being set up at
Ramayampet, Medak District.

MADHAVA AWASAM
EVERY CHILD HAS THE RIGHT TO CHILDHOOD
Located in the midst of Lust green farms 35 Kms from Hyderabad the
state capital is Madhava Awasam in Gollur, a small hamlet, it is here
that Seva Bharathi has set up an exclusive Home for the Children who
are deprived of Childhood. For whatever reasons they may have been
that led them into child labour Seva Bharathi decided to give them a
chance.
The failure of monsoons resulting in low yield unreliable agriculture is
one reason for the unemployed poverty in villages. The first victims
obviously are the little hands who have to forego their schools and
join their parents in feeding themselves and lending a hand to their
family. Seva Bharathi has taken upon itself to at least make role
models out of these children for others to follow.
The Organisation set out after a thorough talent search exam with the
help of not just the usual mathematics, general aptitude and other
routine things, but also with a heart to select the talented children
suffering in the clutches of the child labour. Thanks to the efforts of
volunteers from the teaching fraternity represented by the APUS and
the Psychologists association of Hyderabad as well as Seva Bharathi,
a thorough verification of the financial status has been conducted.
One more thing that influenced the Volunteers of Seva Bharathi has
been the fact that not less than 37% of the Residential bridge school
beneficiaries after mainstreaming, whatever the efforts of the
volunteers involved are end up back in child labour. To avoid this and
bring childhood back to the children Seva Bharathi took up the task
of providing rehabilitation and scholarship programme for the
children at least until 10th class board exams and depending on their
interest and talent later.
