ChE 312 Assignment #1

Question 1 eClass Multiple Choice Questions (10 marks)

Please log on to eClass to complete the Assign 01, Q01 set of multiple choice
questions.
Question 2 - submit as part of your hard-copy assignment (10 marks)
Find five (5) different types of equipment- or system- specifications that you deal with
regularly (in your day-to-day life or part-time job). Use a table similar to the one shown
here to compile your answers. For each specification, tell me: the quantity, the value
(with units), the units system, and then convert the value to SI and English Engineering
units. Each entry MUST describe a different quantity (i.e. you cant use any more
pressure ratings)!! Show your calculations used to convert from one unit system to
another.

Question 3 (10 marks)
Answer the following questions. Show your work.
(a) The following equation was programmed into a plants control system for
determining the volumetric flow rate, Q, in m3/s, of a liquid flowing through a
venturi meter: Q 0.136 P
Where P = is the measured pressure drop over the venturi meter and is the fluid
density. Is this equation general or restricted?
(b) The pressure difference, p, across a partial blockage in an artery (called stenosis)
is approximated by the equation
2

V
p K v
K u 0 1 V 2
D
A1

where V is the blood velocity, is the blood viscosity, the blood density, D the artery
diameter, A0 the area of the unobstructed artery, and A1 the area of the stenosis.
Determine the dimensions of the constants Kv and Ku. Would this equation be valid in
any system of units? Explain.
