Quarantine

1. "a state, period, or place of isolation in which people or animals that have
arrived from elsewhere or been exposed to infectious or contagious disease
are placed."
2. Prevents transmission of foreign diseases and pests from entering Australia
3. Items that may not be brought into Australia include fermented milk, raw
white meat and white meat products
4. The monitoring of foreign diseases allows Australian authorities to act
more aptly in response to an outbreak, as well as determining the level of
threat that the foreign disease poses.
5. Farmers should destroy cattle carrying foot and mouth disease to prevent
further transmission.
6. Raw meat provides and ideal environment for the growth of harmful,
disease causing pathogens.
7. Coughing, Sneezing, close contact can all cause the spread of disease.
8. Follow Quarantine laws as denoted by the governing authorities
Public Health Programs, Pesticides and Genetic Engineering:
Public Health Programs:

Standardised procedures for :

The handling, cooking and storage of food

The sterilisation of medical equipment

The disposal of garbage

The treatment of sewerage and the recycling of water

The reporting of notable diseases

Regular Screening programs

Childhood immunisation

Public Education programs

Such procedures prevent the spread of diseases such as Hepatitus

Pesticides:

Chemicals used to kill plants, animals, pathogens, and vectors

Either insectocides, fungicides, or herbicides

E.g. DDT is an insectocide used to kill mosquitos, which are vectors for
malaria

Genetic Engineering:

Altering the genetic composition of organisms to ensure disease

resistance

This prevents the occurance of the disease

Transgenic species features genes transplanted from other organisms,

usually to cause the creation of proteins that harm pathogens

5 Notifiable Diseases in Australia:

Botulism.

Campylobacteriosis.

Cryptosporidiosis.

Haemolytic uraemic syndrome (otherwise known as HUS)

Hepatitis A.

3. Whether or not a disease is "Notifiable" depends on the threat that the

diseases possesses, as well as it's capacity to harm, and the speed at which
the disease tends to spread (The disease must be infectious). The collation of
information from notifications allows authorities to monitor the disease and
thus helps to prevent possible outbreaks through an early warning.
4. By preventing the occurance of the disease, no harm is done to the
individual from the disease, and the disease is still expunged. It is far more
resource efficient to prevent the occurance of an outbreak than to have to
deal with the effects and aftermath of one.
