BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION CHALLENGES IN HILLY AREAS

SYNOPSIS
Introduction: A Bridge is a structure build to span a valley, road, river, bodyof water, or any other physical
obstacle.Designs of Bridges will vary depending upon the function ofthe bridge and nature of the
area where the bridge is to beconstructed. The first bridges were made by nature itselfas
simple as alog fallen across a stream or stones in the river. The first bridges made by humans
were probably spans of cutwooden logs or planks and eventually stones, using a simplesupport
and crossbeam arrangement. Some early Americans used trees or bamboo poles to crosssmall
caverns or wells to get from one place to another.
A common form of lashing sticks, logs, anddeciduous branches together involved the use of long
reedsor other harvested fibers woven together to form aconnective rope capable of binding and
holding togetherthe materials used in early bridges.Hilly region pose unique problem for bridge
construction. Ina restricted hilly area itself climatic conditions, geologicalfeatures and
hydrological parameters vary considerably. Keeping in view the bridge site and various
constraints, type of bridge and method of construction are to beselected carefully for safe,
economical andsuccessful completion of bridge construction

Literature Review: 1. BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION CHALLENGES IN HILLY AREAS,Singh, R

DHIMAN, R K. Jan 2004
The challenges associated with bridge construction in hilly areas of India are considered,
focusing on bridges across rivers with bouldery beds, bridges across deep gorges, bridges
in areas with extreme temperatures and high winds, and bridges with horizontal and
vertical curves. The Border Roads Organisation's experience in bridge construction in
hilly areas is outlined. The company usually uses prestressed concrete composite

construction. The following bridge construction projects are described: Akhnoor bridge
over River Chenab, Passighatbridge over River Siang and the Lohit bridge over the River
Lohit. Photographs of special features of major bridges built by Border Roads
Organisation are included. Construction management of bridges by Border Roads
Organisation is outlined.

.Hilly region has wide variations in geology, geomorphology, climate, altitude and
materials resources. The varying geological situations and ongoingdevelopment
activities, climatic variation, hydrogeological conditions result in different types of
hazardslike landslides, mud flows occurring frequently in these areas. Due to this
Planning and design of buildings in a hill settlement are tedious and challenging task. In
response to these difficult development conditions, effective construction technique of
load bearing structure evolved with local available materials to fulfilthe needs of people,
which cause minimal damage to environment and are sustainable in nature

ANALYSIS OF THE LEONARD P. ZAKIM BUNKER HILL BRIDGE, BOSTON,
USA N.Vadgama1 2006
This paper provides a critical analysis of the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge in
Boston USA. It will consider the initial concepts, aesthetics, construction and foundations of the
bridge. Furthermore analysis of bridge loading, strength, wind loading and serviceability will be
covered under simplified analysis.

Relevance of the Work: 1. Construction of bridge across deep gorges

2. Construction of bridge on rivers with bouldary beds
3. Construction of bridges in extreme temperature zones
4. Construction of bridges on sharp turn on highway
5. Control Landslide or Debris flow
