Assignment in SOCIAL DIMENTION of Education

Daryl Gumacal Quimada BSED4 1b-1

Issues for Discourse
1. One of the problems faced by the youth today is teenage pregnancy. For socially
responsible education, should sex education be a part of the school curriculum? Why?
Why not? If so, at what level of schooling and in what way should it be taught?

Answer. Yes. It should be taught after the learner reaches his/her age of reason
or after the learner is capable of adopting concepts of nature. In a sense, it is the most
interesting subject in science in learners view but despite, why teenage pregnancy
case still increasing. First reason, it is unavoidable for those who want to fulfill their
curiosity, it is impossible to say that nothing will happen to a male and female staying in
the same room in one night even they are already knowledgeable about sex. In my
perspective in order to lessen the case of early pregnancy, it is important to have
orientation for sex education for student and also the parent so that they can guide
their child to avoid those circumstances. Second, the problem is the teaching strategy
itself. It is important for the teacher to know the exact strategy in teaching this subject,
what Im trying to say about inappropriateness of teaching is that, A simple smile
coming from the teacher will make everybody laugh and it will make the discussion
very embarrassing to both student and teacher, the tendency they will not learn why
they are studying it at the first place.
2. Many, If not all institutions in society have an educational role to play name several
institutions or agencies and explain the educational role they are responsible to fulfill.

Answer. Government agencies like, DOLE (Department of Labor and Employment)

and PESO (Public Employment Service Office) role of education is to provide monetary or
service in terms of scholarship and donations in other words these kind of agencies may
not provide education itself but support school that executed the learning process itself.

Parents and families have the most direct and lasting impact on children's learning
and development of social competence. When parents are involved, students achieve
more, exhibit more positive attitudes and behavior, and feel more comfortable in new
settings. Early childhood providers need to reach out to families in order to build the
kind of relationships that engage them as active partners early in their children's
education

3. Do you agree or disagree with the following statements? Why or why not?
a. People are schooled to accept a society.

Answer. I disagree, People are schooled because they want to learn, they want
to prosper, and they want a wonderful life. For my opinion People are schooled not
because they want to accept a society instead, they are schooled for them to be
accepted by the society.
b. It has been asserted that the root cause of numerous societal problems is
dwelling stress on values development in most schools.
Answer. I agree, the school is fundamental institution, learners dont just learn,
they adopt and they adopt not only good but even bad conduct and the only sotution for
social problem itself is the school, the key points we can teach children from a young
age is the idea of acceptance, not simply tolerance. Accepting others for who they are
doesn't mean everyone will be best friends. It does mean broadening one's perspective
and having a willingness to be comfortable with differences and It is still our
responsibility as citizens to respect each other.
4. What are the two most desirable functions of education considering the present
conditions of the Philippine society? Why?

Answer. I believe that the most desirable function of school is the intellectual
function the development of mental powers or the acquisition of knowledge and skills
because other function will not exist without this function
The second function that I desired most is the Political the promotion of patriotism,
law, and order. This is desirable for me because functions like Economical and Societal
will only be strengthened if this function is in its most.
5. Comment on Durkheims statement: Education must make the child cover in few
years the enormous distance travelled by mankind in many centuries

Comment, it is somehow related to the saying Teach how to learn not what
to learn
Of course if we tend to take it literally, it is impossible to learn the wide variety of
concept in schools but if we teach learners how to learn they will study
It on their own
In modern context, schooling represents the means by which instructors pass on the
values, knowledge, and skills that they or others have defined as important for success
in the world. Schools perform a number of important functions that serve the needs of
society and contribute to its smooth operation. These functions include transmitting
skills, facilitating change and progress, contributing basic and applied research,
integrating diverse populations, and screening and selecting the most qualified
students for what are considered the most socially important careers.

6. If teaching and learning are forms of cultural politics according to conflict theory,
what are some ways in which we silence or exclude students voice in our classroom?

Answer. Im not knowledgeable enough to answer the question accurately but

for my opinion we cannot include students voice in the classroom when we are
deciding to make plan for the class because it may be turn into a subjective result
7. Which of the following basic functions of schools do you find most essential?
Rank them according to their importance. Be able to defend your first choice?

Answer. 1st Instruction and training I do believe that this function is the most
important because without instruction and training other functions will not exist,
2nd Research and development
3rd Custodial Service
4th Political and social integration
5th Transmission of culture
8. With the numerous functions of schools, does teaching remain to be an attractive
profession in the Philippine society today?

Answer. Honestly speaking teaching is not an attractive profession at all. Low

salary, lot of works and requires your whole time in preparing your instructional
material. That is the reality; and I believe if teaching is easy for you then you do it
wrong. Well I dont care if it is not an attractive profession either as long as I have
courage to face the consequence of my profession Im going to be a teacher.
9. Which of the two statements is vital to you? Explain?
a. Schools are necessary for the transmission of traditional Filipino value
such as love for the family, cooperativism , resiliency, transparency, etc.

Answer. I choose letter a, because, I value more the culture we have, it makes
us distinct to other countries, and it was a source of identity, of self confidence and selfesteem. It allows people to understand the world and to define their places within it and
we can only preserve our c
10. Are there contradictions in the functions of schools? What do you think are tensions
among the different goals of education? For Example, how can one teach patriotism
and basic allegiance to the state while still engendering critical thinking skills?

Answer. There are no contradiction occurs in the given functions of school. The
function works in individual manner, some may anchor to research and development
some in instruction and training and soon and so for. According Functionalism, it seems
contradicting but if one accepted its purpose in the society everything will go smoothly.
The tension maybe is the process of this function itself, I am referring to the
conflict view of survival of the fittest, even schools has a function, rich individual and
intelligent people will dominate after.
