Platform Tennis Team Seeks New Players

he Florham Park mens platform tennis team is looking for new players to
join the team this fall. Platform tennis
is a cross between regular tennis and racquetball, with a playable screen around the
entire court, which measures about a quarter
of the size of a conventional tennis court.
The sport is typically played only in the fall,
winter and early spring.
Emmett Park, part of the boroughs
municipal complex at 111 Ridgedale
Avenue, is home to two elevated enclosed
courts that are maintained by the Recreation
Department. New team players do not need
to be experts or even have prior experience

playing platform tennis. The team is simply

seeking players with an interest in the game,
as well as some familiarity with playing racquet sports. The team practices on Monday
and Wednesday nights.
Matches against teams from surrounding
towns are usually played on Saturday mornings. Clinics will be held on Tuesday and/or
Thursday evenings, if there are enough
interested beginner players.
For more information, contact the
Florham Park Recreation Department at
973-410- 5390, or visit www.florhamparkboro.net/recreation.

United Way Golf Outing To Benefit

Local Women

omen who care about local philanthropy and enjoy a round of

golf have an opportunity to combine both passions at the United Way Honey
Open Golf Outing on Mon., Sept. 28, at the
Farmstead Golf & Club in Lafayette.
Hosted by the United Way Womens
Leadership Council, the event honors the
legacy of tournament founder Helen
Honey Ackerman, a former Sussex
County clerk who believed women and
children should have access to resources to
build a better life, subsequently helping to
build a stronger community. A philanthropic network of professional women, the
Council helps the ALICE (Asset Limited,
Income Constrained, Employed) population
and women and children in poverty have
access to such resources through fundraising efforts including this golf outing.
United Way is pleased to carry on
Honeys legacy to support women who
deserve a chance to reach their full potential, said United Way Community
Relations Manager Monica Lemperle.

Family Owned And Operated

Over 30 Years Experience

Through the ALICE Scholarships, we are

helping women on their path to employment and, ultimately, to financial independence.
The outing offers women two ways to
play: A nine-hole scramble lesson for
golfers interested in learning more about the
game; or a traditional 18-hole scramble for
experienced golfers.
The outing will begin with registration at
7 a.m. followed by an 8 a.m. shotgun start
for 18-hole golfers. The nine-hole lesson
will begin at 9 a.m. The $125 per person
registration includes golf, continental
breakfast, and an awards luncheon.
For more information or to register by
Wed., Sept. 23, visit www.UnitedWayNNJ.

From age two through age four and

and weight of the particular seat, or forward facing in the rear seat of the vehicle.
For ages four until age eight and less

the vehicle.
Age eight through 17 must wear a

secured in the appropriate car seat or
booster for their age, weight, and height,
in the front passenger seat. If the child is
in a rear-facing car seat, the passenger
side airbag must be disabled or turned
off.
For information about our car seat
check-up, go to: www.preventionworksnj.org or visit one of NJs car seat inspection stations.

Judaism and instances exemplifying
Annes behavior as a teenager as well as
her frustrations with her sister and mother.
This unforgettable and powerful story will
come to life for a new generation this fall.

Frank also features numerous school-time
matinees for school groups. Tickets for
school-time performances are $17. For

IMPLANT DENTISTRY
For over twenty years, implant dentistry has been a reliable option for patients
with missing teeth. With the ability to support a crown, an implant procedure
has the capacity to bypass drilling the adjacent teeth. Additionally, with the
recent availability of mini implants, implant dentistry has expanded its utilization to anchoring both full and partial dentures for a more secure fit. As they
provide an economic alternative, patients have been very receptive of mini
implants, as they make eating and speaking with dentures much easier.
Dr. Helen Chiu has always been involved in implant dentistry, making it an
integrated part of her everyday practice. From replacing a single tooth, inserting crowns or bridges, securing dentures, to creating multiple, full-arch reconstructions, she performs every step of each process, surgical and restorative.

Blood Drives Held In Sept.

ew Jersey Blood Services has

planned the following blood
drives:
Sept. 20- Seventh Day Adventist Church
in Dover, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Flanders
United Presbyterian in Flanders, 9 a.m. to
1:30 p.m..
Sept. 25- Madison Area YMCA,
Madison, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Sept. 28- Knights of Columbus, Netcong,
3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
New Jersey Blood Services, a division
of New York Blood Center (NYBC) is
asking for help to maintain an adequate
supply of all blood types, but especially
O-negative the universal blood which
can be transfused into anyone in an emergency. In addition, hundreds of additional blood drives need to be scheduled to
meet projected hospital demand. Current
inventory of several blood types is running below the desired target level.
Its simple: hospital patient demand
for blood often outpaces our best efforts
to recruit donors and schedule blood
drives, said NYBC Executive Director

of Donor Recruitment Andrea Cefarelli.

There are always reasons but we have to
overcome that for the sake of hospital
patients who need us.
This is one of the toughest times of
the year, Cefarelli added. Were asking
for our dedicated supporters to roll up
their sleeves to make sure were able to
provide our hospital partners with whatever they need to take care of their
patients.
Blood products have a short shelf life
from five to 42 days, so constant
replenishment is necessary. Each and
every day there are patients who depend
on the transfusion of red blood cells,
platelets and plasma to stay alive. But
blood and blood products cant be manufactured. They can only come from volunteer blood donors who take an hour to
attend a blood drive or visit a donor center.
To donate blood or for information on
how to organize a blood drive call 1-800933-2566; visit: www.nybloodcenter.org.

towns.
"There is an added excitement in playing to the OSPAC audience. Listeners
return year after year," DeVos said. "The
audience is multigenerational. We attract
jazz aficionados, casual listeners, and
neighbors sometimes hearing jazz for the
first time and discovering how much they
like it."
Anderson said, "We have also expanded
our beer garden to include wine." The beer
and wine garden features Roselle-based
Climax Brewing, homemade sangria and is
set next to the lake and its walking path.
Proper ID is required. There will also be
ample food and other vendors as well as
children's activities including face painting
by artist Gina Riva-Velasquez.
Set times and full band personnel may
be found at the OSPAC website. Tickets

special themed events and medallions.
The first event is for the kickoff of the

Softball Tournament Swings In $8,000 For Bone Marrow Charity

by Kerry Breen
n Sat. Aug. 15, residents of East
Hanover stepped up to the plate at a
softball tournament that doubled as a
charity event to benefit the Be The Match
national registry.
The softball tournament was a way for
people to learn about donation, and register
themselves, all while enjoying a popular
sport on what turned out to be a beautiful
Saturday morning in East Hanovers Lurker
Park. The softball tournament, held by the
New Jersey Career Fire Chiefs Association,
is an annual event, although their cause
changes from year to year.
Eight teams played. It cost each team
$1,000 to register, and each team also helped
raise money that was donated to Be The
Match. Donations are used to help grow the
donor registry, assist patients financially,
and fund important research. Overall, the
tournament raised $8,000, according to
Rebecca Kolas, a spokesperson for Be The
Match.
The East Hanover Fire Department team,
captained by Joe Sperli, raised $1,000. The
East Hanover PBA, captained by Jesse
Novalis, raised $1,000. The Fire Department
of Jersey City, captained by Jason Greco,
raised $225. The New Jersey State FMBA,
captained by Tim Duecsch, raised $1,000.

Roofing

The Livingston Fire Department, captained

by Dennis Britt, raised $1,000. The Newark
Firefighters Union, captained by Charles
West, raised $1,000. The New Jersey Career
Fire Chiefs Association, captained by Bob
Caruso, raised $1,000. The U.S.C.A., captained by Gerard Centanni, raised $1,000.
Each team set individual donation goals,
an ideal amount of money that they hoped to
raise by the end of the tournament. Every
team was successful in fulfilling its goal.
Donations were made mostly through a
website created for the event.
The first pitch was thrown by five year
old Delaney of Woodridge. Delaney was
diagnosed with cancer at three months old,
and is the president of Delanys Clubhouse,
a club for platelet donors at Community
Blood Services. She and her family support
other patients by hosting marrow and blood
donation events.
Be The Match is a nationwide service
that helps blood cancer patients find the
bone marrow transplants they need. They
also fund lifesaving research and help
patients overcome the financial barriers that
can arise due to the costs of bone marrow
transplant. Representatives from Be The
Match were present to help register new
potential donors, and answer questions
regarding the registration process. They also

helped explain how to host a marrow and/or

blood donation event.
Registering as a bone marrow donor is a
long term commitment, explained
Johannson, but it is often the only way to
help those suffering from diseases such as
leukemia, lymphoma, aplastic anemia, sickle cell anemia, and other serious illnesses.
Approximately 70 percent of patients cannot
find matches within their own families, and
therefore must turn to the Be The Match registry in hopes of finding a donor.

We work every day to save lives

through transplant, as stated on its website,
found at https://bethematch.org. For the past
25 years, it has been the largest and most
diverse bone marrow registry in the world.
We only registered three new donors,
said Elise Johannson, a Be The Match representative who was present at the event. We
always have a great turnout, but at the end of
the day education and awareness is our goal,
and we succeeded in that.
