Learn the Basics Of Leak Testing Procedure

Right before knowing anything about Leak Testing, it is necessary to know what is a leak and what
impediments it may invite. Leak addresses flow of liquid or gas through the wall of a vessel when there
is an opening like crack, hole or bad seal. Flow generates when there is pressure difference, flowing
from higher to lower. Leaks are seen being generated from positive pressure, which hints directly at the
internal pressure of the vessel to the lesser atmospheric pressure. But often it is seen that leak is caused
where flow is caused in reversed fashion, from atmosphere to an empty object. Now to know about the
condition of leak, leak testing is carried out. mm3 or cm3 (cc) per second or minute are the units used
to indicate leak into an atmosphere. An average unit of leakage is the mbarl/sec.
Leak Testing Technique
When you are out to conduct leak testing you need to enquire of few features, such as the size of the
component, its internal volume, leak limit, does the vessel come with concealed internal volumes which
is likely to influence leak dimensions. You need to make sure if the parts are clean and dry, you need to
enquire the exact access to sealed units and if the access is rigid or flexible, what is the surface finish of
any sealing surfaces.
Now there are different leak testing mechanism you may resort to,
Leak Testing - Standard Systems
Pressure / Vacuum
During this leak testing, the test piece and the reference volume are concurrently evacuated or
pressurized to a predetermined pressure point. The air that exists into the system is permitted to even
out, when the supply valves are all closed. It is fundamental to zero The Differential Pressure
Transducer, it happens automatically but often you need to do it manually. Subsequent to this
stabilization mechanism, using the Transducer, the pressure that modifies in the test piece is
contrasted to the pressure modification in the reference volume. When the test piece is leaking, the
disparity will be perceptible noticeably. It can be measured and you can set an alarm limit to learn about
the pass/fail decision. Such leak testing procedure is fully mechanical, the correctness and sensitivity of
the system is specified by the technique of setting the predetermined pressure alongside ensuring the
quality and nature of control valves.

Helium Systems
A vacuum pump vacates the test chamber and test piece concurrently to a predetermined vacuum. At
this predetermined point, the chamber and the test piece are inaccessible and the chamber vacated
more to a very low pressure. A positive pressure disparity is consequently fashioned between the
chamber and the test piece. Subsequently Helium gas is entered the test piece, sometimes in a 10%
concentration. As the vacuum persists to be drawn, a sample from the chamber is analyzed using A
Mass Spectrometer. The Mass Spectrometer calculates helium leakage and drives the pass/fail result.
Right before applying helium dose, chamber pressure is often compared to the test piece pressure. This
is done so, to avoid a gross leak which may results from saturating Mass Spectrometer.
