For my usage of the term Interrex I
am mostly indebted with Robert
Graves. I misspelled some of the
names, locations and nouns, and
missed the exact historical dates so
that I can underline that this is
fiction.

Scene 1
The set is an office in of a clerk that contains furniture from Eastern
Europe from the 60s. At right is a sofa with two armchairs with a coffee
table in between. Behind is a wall with a library, and a slide projector that
is directed towards the depth of the scene. In depth (parallel to the scene)
is a bureau that is drawing table of architect too. Behind it is an aluminum
holder (1.50m high) that carries a fluorescent screen that can be rolled.
This screen is used for the slide projector. At left is a blank space with a
wall at its far left which is covered with cheap wallpaper. Next to the
bureau is a commode, liqueur- bar with an ice-barrel on top. Aside of it is
the gramophone.
Alexandar sits in an armchair. Janko sits on the sofa wrapped in blanket.
ALEXANADAR
So how was your day?
JANKO
(As waking up from a nap, showing his head from the wool blanket he was wrapped
in.)- As any other.
ALEXANDAR
You are evading answering? Good or bad; yes or no.
JANKO
I am not avoiding anything. We are not speaking for first time. You know how my
days are.
ALEXANADAR
Yet you have to answer if you want to go to a higher level. Yes or no?
JANKO
Well not all questions can be answered correctly with yes and no. I do want to go to
a higher level. If we want to achieve that we have to answer precisely. You are not
guiding me well enough, I have to say. How do you mean was my day good? If I
wasnt in an orphanage it would have been good, because the weather is good. A day
in the orphanage cannot be good; it can be average or bad. At least that is how
things are for me. But I have seen children that do think that a day in that
Institution can be good. Those are the ones that are with dyslexia, down-syndrome,
imbecility, various forms of retardation, autism etc. I am not one of them.
ALEXANADAR
You are amongst them. Why are you so sure that one day you will not become one of
them?

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

JANKO
I know because I dont want to.
ALEXANADAR
You hate the friends you have from the orphanage? What a selfish thing to say.
How can you reach a higher level if you keep so much hate?
JANKO
I didnt say I hate them. I said I dont want to become one of them.
ALEXANADAR
You should adapt yourself. You shouldnt be selfish.
JANKO
I am not selfish. You agree that I am on a higher level from them. So they should
adopt themselves to me.
ALEXANADAR
But why are you on a higher level? Doubtlessly because you can visit my office and
talk to me.
JANKO
Wrong. You can afford to talk with somebody like me because currently I am in the
orphanage. I am affordable for you. Otherwise you would have to pay too much
money. That will cause you a depression, malfunction of your vital organs
(digestion, heart tachycardia- which is so symptomatic for a man of your age); you
will start to lose your health and you will go to a lower level. You know that that
would be too risky. Than you will have to fight to go back, but you will lack
strength; the strength you used to have when you were younger. At your age people
are habitually well aware about the global system. You know that if you drop on a
lower level you will have to accept the fact that everybody can steal everything from
you and not go in jail for that. Than you will have to watch all the criminals
becoming TV stars; then you will have to accept the fact that when somebody robs
your apartment and you phone the police- nobodys going to arrive. So you decided
to be good with me and the rest of us, orphans, so that we can keep you on the
appreciated level. The fact that you like to speak with an orphan like me does not
make you a better person. You are rational, wise, even selfish.
ALEXANADAR
Then and you are selfish. Why dont you share that notion with me that this activity
exists with your friends too?
JANKO
They are not my friends.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

ALEXANADAR
Why do you reject them? Your heart should be filled with love and understanding.
Not with hate.
JANKO
I dont hate them. I DONT WANT TO BECOME LIKE THEM.
ALEXANADAR
Now I am beginning to understand why you can keep this feeling. You constantly
nurture that feeling that you are superior; and that believe that THEY should
become like you
JANKO
Absolutely not! What I believe I am and what I think they should become is
completely irrelevant. It is just that I am what I am; I am not what I am not and I
dont plan to become what I am not.
ALEXANADAR
Oh my god. That is Hegel. You are with the categorical imperative. You are solo.
And with that hate in your heart you can be good.
JANKO
Wrong. Philosophy has nothing to do with all of this; nor with my heart. YOU are
contradictory concerning this. You want to be philosophic yet you are mixing this
discipline with the human heart, with the emotions. Philosophy is rational,
emotions are manipulation
ALEXANADAR
(He becomes angry. His Cheeks are blushed.)- Philosophy is a discipline that is
humanistic. I have a heart. I have emotions.
JANKO
Bullshit. You have bad blood pressure, increased sugar in your old vessels; you
cannot control yourself anymore. You are beginning to see the world as a
construction; not like me, as an organic entity. You are constantly thinking how to
survive in that construction, in that maze. So YOU are becoming selfish. Your face
doesnt look as fresh as it used to, you smell on something old, something rotten.
Like old chiffonier, or on nasty food. People do not watch you with love in their eyes;
nor with a desire. They are afraid of you (thinking of)- are we one day going to
become like this, or are we already so monstrous? So you are hiding from the world
in this stinky office.
ALEXANADAR
(He becomes furious.)- Why dont you embrace the world? I asked you: Why dont
you tell everybody this exists?
JANKO
Because this does not exist for everybody. In a way this exists for me and you only.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

ALEXANADAR
You hate the world. Thats why you can reject it.
JANKO
I dont hate the world. But yes I do have hatred. Why should love be a good thing
and the hatred the bad? Than the hatred shouldnt have been existed. God wanted
us to have both so that we can separate well from bad.
ALEXANADAR
Wrong. Bad things give us the evolution. We couldnt evolve if we had not those
obstacles. This does not mean our heart should be filled with hatred.
JANKO
As you noticed already; hatred is good when is on a right place. Hatred is power,
hatred is meaning. Emotions are delusions, emotions are weakening.
ALEXANADAR
You are speaking as you dont have a dick
JANKO
Well I am 9.
ALEXANADAR
Or like you already have it. This is rather incredible.
JANKO
You are speaking like you are not a Christian. Real believer does not speak like this
in front of a child.
ALEXANADAR
You mean what I am speaking is not by the law.
JANKO
That too. Our legal system is based on Christianity. You are showing no
appreciation for that.
ALEXANADAR
Untruth. The legal system is based on science. It is scientifically proven that this
way of talking may harm your health. You may have consequences on your psychic
and physical development.
JANKO
Than why you spoke of it in that manner once again? The social worker had warned
you never to do that again. Dont forget that is bad for your health too.
ALEXANADAR
Because I am on a higher level. Not all laws imply for me. They cannot reach me. I
am intelligent enough always to escape.
JANKO
You are not afraid that I can tell what we are doing?

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

ALEXANADAR
No because I gave you the offer?
JANKO
I am not corruptive. No offer can silence me.
ALEXANADAR
We both know that is not truth. You are already silenced.
JANKO
(Unsecure; unstable.)- How do you know I am silenced?
ALEXANADAR
You are still coming here. What a clever way of thinking you have. Dont you
understand: You are chosen because you are predisposed to be silenced?
JANKO
(Throwing the blanket and standing up.)- Nobody is predisposed to be silenced. Only
those retards from the Institution.
ALEXANADAR
(In the first sentence he is imitating Jankos way of speaking.)- I am not one of them.
Thats all you know of.
JANKO
Or that is all I dont know of. Not knowing is as useful as knowing. Especially at
this age when we are developing.
ALEXANADAR
(He takes a cigarette from the front pocket of his suit. He lights it. He offers the
cigarette box to Janko.)
JANKO
(He answers no with a movement of his head.)- I am developing. I dont want any
poison in my young body. Thats not good for me. I am aware that much of my
friends from the orphanage smoke, but I am not one of them.
ALEXANADAR
Not you and they are not your friends
JANKO
They are not. I have no friends. In my situation that would be quite dangerous.
ALEXANADAR
Danger- why not? That can be exiting.
JANKO
Maybe for somebody else. In my world danger is trouble. I know that if I am in
trouble there will be nobody to feel sorry for me.
ALEXANADAR
You are honest but sincere. That can be dangerous too

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

JANKO
(He responds in a confused, paranoid manner.)- I am Christian. Of course I am
sincere.
ALEXANADAR
You are cautious yet you are sincere. That makes no sense. Havent it ever slipped
into your mind that some of your friends from the orphanage are not sincere. Unlike
you they have a mask. Their mask is their helmet.
JANKO
I dont want to have a mask.
ALEXANADAR
Why?
JANKO
Because it may knit with my face. Then I will look like them. Like a zombie.
ALEXANADAR
We will tell you: We like zombies. We are bad like them. We wanted to trick you.
Our civilization is based on hypocrisy.
JANKO
Our civilization is based on food storages and supplies. There are so many hungry
people.
ALEXANADAR
What makes you think that some of your friends didnt come here too?
JANKO
The way they smell. Your kind hates bad smells.
ALEXANADAR
Wrong. We wash them before we let them here.
JANKO
You let them here To do what with them?
ALEXANADAR
To let them smoke our cigarettes? (He offers again his open cigarette box towards
Janko.)
JANKO
(He takes one cigarette, Alexandar lights it for him. He begins to smoke.)
ALEXANADAR
You changed your mind?
JANKO
No This is a stress relief. This is just for now.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

ALEXANADAR
You can feel the stress? You are opening in front of me? Arent you afraid that that
may strike you somehow one day?
JANKO
No. I am aware I dont have you. I am aware I dont have anybody.
ALEXANADAR
You should have us dear. You should have the mask like all of us.
JANKO
Who are you? I know who is you; I dont know who are you.
ALEXANADAR
You think you know who I am; you know who we are!
JANKO
Remind me?
ALEXANADAR
Those people that care about you. That are giving you everything that you need. In
the shopping malls, in the pharmacies, in the sweetshops. That gave you your first
toys.
JANKO
You should know I never had them. I was always hungry and I rarely ever had
where to repair my teeth. (He smiles and shows his brown teeth.)
ALEXANDAR
That was ugly. I will give you some money for your dentist. (He takes the wallet
from his under-pocket and holds a suck of money towards Janko.)
JANKO
I am not taking any money from you.
ALEXANDAR
Why?
JANKO
Because I dont want to relax. It is not good for me to relax and to begin to think
somebody can care about me. Not at my age and not in my position. One day you
will disappear like everybody else. And because I dont know from what you have
your money from.
ALEXANDAR
Oh came on. My child, take this. You may relax. I have this from honest work.
JANKO
You have that because there was nobody to steal it from you. I know that they
regularly steal everything from honest people. For some reason they were afraid
from you. You are not honest. You are dangerous.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

ALEXANDAR
Thats nonsense. I am an old man. Who can possibly be afraid from me?
JANKO
Stay away from me! I know you are with a murder attempt.
ALEXANDAR
What?
JANKO
You are a murderer. You are with an unsolved murder case.
ALEXANDAR
Thats stupid. I just made the project. They werent using the proper material, thats
why the building collapsed. My project was OK, they were pasting on the supplies.
You see I am an artist, an architect. I am just creating the design, somebody else
does the realization.
JANKO
Who did the realization?
ALEXANADAR
I dont know. Why must I know that?
JANKO
Dont you care about the people that died, including the three children?
ALEXANADAR
I do care but they have discretion agreements. I had to sign them. They wouldnt
realize my project; they wouldnt invest in it otherwise.
JANKO
You see you have no morality.
ALEXANADAR
Though I do have ambition. Why should my project remain unrealized? Everybody
said it is magnificent. I didnt do that for myself, I did it for the sake of our
civilization.
JANKO
Do you like the graveyards? Are they the civilization? Are they mesmerizing?
ALEXANADAR
Depends how they are designed of course. Sit down. Let me bring you whisky with
soda. (He goes in the back, opens the small fridge next to the commode, and prepares
the whisky.)- You are still very young
JANKO
Of course I am. I am 9.
ALEXANADAR
you are taking everything in your heart. You HAVE emotions. Its good to have
them. Thats how people will appreciate you more. That is a way how you can

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

10

gather more people around you to support you and invest in you. Thats good for
your career. You have your career. You have your compromises. Its good to be
flexible. (He gives the glass with whisky and ice to Janko.)- You wont say I gave this
to you?
JANKO
(Takes the glass and drinks few big mouthfuls.)- If they give me the breathing
instrument I will have to tell them.
ALEXANADAR
(He is a little with a panic in his voice.)- You should learn how to tell them. Tell
them that you were walking in the shopping malls and you saw a presentation of
wine. So you wanted to try its taste.
JANKO
Wrong. They would have figured out I am too young when they saw me. Think of
something else; invent some other lie.
ALEXANADAR
You (Preparing a glass of whisky for himself. He is approaching towards Janko
with his glass.)- You were too cold, some philanthropist in the pub gave you a booze.
They beat the glasses and drink the whisky.
JANKO
Thats better. We need you to prepare the lies for us. Is that what you wanted to
hear?
ALEXANADAR
More or less Yet real gentleman never tells what he wants. (With his hand he
touches the forehead of Janko with a sensual movement.)
JANKO
(With repulsion in his movement he distances his head from the hand of Alexandar.)Thats sordid. Dont you see that I am sweaty?
ALEXANADAR
You look frail. Actually you were cold. They dont give you enough from the heating
in the orphanage dont they?
JANKO
Who; to me? They give to me as much as they give to everybody else. I shouldnt
complain.
ALEXANADAR
Obviously that is not enough. I will give you aspirins. Take one each time you sense
cold. You may drink from those pills as much as you need. They can do no harm.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

11

JANKO
Cool. Youll goanna take care about my health.
ALEXANADAR
I am nice and caring persona. I dont understand why you
JANKO
You do understand. Why are you here? Werent you one of the most talented
architects in the world?
ALEXANADAR
I wanted to learn about other cultures and philosophies. That is so interesting and
inspiring for me. Seconds ago I mentioned the term- persona. Did you know that our
culture originates from Persia, the handshakes, the kissing in the cheek?
JANKO
Everything originates from somewhere. I dont see anything particularly interesting
in this. You murdered people; maybe that is inspiring for you?
ALEXANADAR
I murdered no one. As I sad many times, that was a dreadful accident. I am not
heartless. I did feel sorry for those people. It is just that I have to take care about
myself like everybody else.
JANKO
So what inspired you for your buildings?
ALEXANADAR
Many beautiful things. Here you have so many interesting things. Human eye is the
best designer so far. I was inspired by the antique square, house, how they are
located in the space, positioned in the nature. I noticed that the more the human
culture is older, even primitive, the design is unmistakable. For example the Doric
column has a Paleolithic (Stone Age) origin, but his design was so perfect. It can be
up to 20 meters high, yet at its base has those lines that are thick few millimeters
only. But those tiny lines are so perceptive because they are on that right, exact
place. Primitive man was so spontaneous, unlike the contemporary who is so
conspicuous, malicious. Few designs I did are directly inspired from the antique
mausoleum, thats why they are so magnificent.
JANKO
I doubt that one can do a magnificent design inspired by a grave. Mausoleum is an
antique tomb if I am not wrong? This is not the only objection I have. You sad
antique design was gorgeous because it was completely spontaneous. Well maybe
that is good for the designs, but people were definitely more malicious than because
they had for example cannibalism. So maybe the designs were regressing but the
civilization was progressing. And finally why are you constantly trying to find
inspiration in somebody elses works? Cant you do something of our own?

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

12

ALEXANADAR
I can but at those boards where they are deciding they are always asking us what
was our inspiration. So if you want to be a designer youll better have something
about this in mind. Nobody is going to be impressed by your design if you just tell
them I did all this by myself.
JANKO
Have you ever tried this?
ALEXANADAR
No, like everybody else. I just go with the float. If one day somebody receives
finance only on the base of what he did by himself, than and I am going to be solo.
JANKO
So from all those designers around the world, nobody ever tried to do something
completely authentic? Everybody had to copy something in order to fit the
presenting standards.
ALEXANADAR
Everybody
JANKO
And all of them wanted to be like you? To be in a working group and steal somebody
elses designs
ALEXANADAR
All of them. Wake up! We are in the modern times! Stealing intellectual property is
in. Thats why I always make sure to have good lawyers before I do anything.
JANKO
Than I am sorry but that means that everybody is fucking corruptive. Architecture
is dead. As far as I am concerned, you may put your designs in your mausoleum,
and die with them. Ups I forgot. You cannot design and you cannot die; because
you are already dead.
ALEXANADAR
You should see some of my designs. I have some slides here You dont like me
dont you?
JANKO
Why do you think so?
ALEXANADAR
You dont like to speak with me? You are coming here because you have to, in order
to stay out from that institution as long as possible.
JANKO
Well lets face it: You are not the nicest person in the world.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

13

ALEXANADAR
The thing I am so famous does not impress you
JANKO
Actually nobody wants to be near famous people. They all have nasty secrets like
you.
ALEXANADAR
They will tell you: Thats prejudice, thats generalizationI have secrets, it is
normal to have secrets. Why do you think mine are nasty?
JANKO
It is normal to have privacy! it is normal to have intimacy!! it is not legal to hide
under another name!!!
ALEXANADAR
My career, my life do not impress you?
JANKO
Life!? Sweetheart you are dead!
ALEXANADAR
That happens. It can happen to anyone. It can happen to you.
JANKO
It cannot happen to me, I am not nasty like you.
ALEXANADAR
Me? nasty??
JANKO
Unquestionably you have wet thoughts on me.
ALEXANADAR
You cannot sense that. You are too young. Somebody told you and lied you. Thats
not truth. I did nothing wrong.
JANKO
You did nothing wrong? You are hiding in a primitive country like ours escaping the
international prosecution. You are using the communist establishment and its
destructed economy. I cannot be your companion. I hate communists.
ALEXANADAR
Than why dont you run away?
JANKO
They wont let me. Outside they have many personas like you. They collaborate with
them and later they will manage to bring me back.
ALEXANADAR
I didnt know it was so bad here.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

14

JANKO
and you are a liar. I have read your interviews. You produced designs for many
countries like this one. You made monuments for many dictatorships, helped in
glorifying evil. You received so much money for that. It is ridiculous to say that you
received payment from the leaders that were selling babies for enzyme extractionso that the poor old reaches will keep their face with no wrinkles. Countries like
this are led by monstrous stupidity. Their leaders must sell the human rights of its
people so that their country will not bankrupt. You watched on 16mm in your villa
at the coast when that leader ordered murder of the 8 wives of the rebels, after
what to three of them they opened their stomach, while still breathing, and pulled
out their babies in order to sell them for (Imitating Alexandars way of speaking.)very significant scientific researches.
ALEXANADAR
(With rage.)- They invented it! I told you! That is not truth!
JANKO
Why shall they like to invent something like this?
ALEXANADAR
Because it is sensation! It sells the papers!
JANKO
Dont think about it. Calm down. Your blood pressure will become too high. You
may have a stroke and die. And that will be bad for me. Calm down. Nobody knows
of this except me. Nobody is really interested in this, nor does anybody care. Nobody
cares about anybody in a country like this. Lets face it; they are all on the
existential syndrome. Parents selling their children; children selling parents I
dont want to see your slides because I am too tired now. I have been reading all
day. My eyes are tired. Dont think about it. As you may see I saw and read so many
things about you. I dont need any extra education about you.
ALEXANADAR
(Goes with nervous movements towards the fridge and takes another glass of whiskey
with ice.)- Do you like music?
JANKO
I like music
ALEXANADAR
and whiskey. (Tries to fill the emptied Jankos glass. He covers it with his hand.)
JANKO
I like whiskey too, but not anymore Dont look at me like that. I dont want to
have a headache.
ALEXANADAR
What kind of music do you like?

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

15

JANKO
Well not everything. I like good, solid staff.
ALEXANADAR
So you prefer classic to modern?
JANKO
I
didnt say that . Modern music can be solid too. I dont like to listen to
music for a reason of not having anything else to do. I dont like to listen to music
which listening to is wasting time.
ALEXANADAR
How can listening to any kind of music be without losing time? Music is a
contemplative discipline. You dont do anything important while
JANKO
While reading? ... Music can help us concentrate. We can learn so much from music.
The order of things, so to speak. Thats why it can help us concentrate, because its
structure must be so perfect in order not to disturb the established harmony of our
senses, which balance the energy we have behind our ears. Of course not any kind
of music. Some modern music just aggresses our mind, rapes our notion of aesthetic.
This commercial music just tries to sell itself by being amazingly laud. It rapes our
ears like ugly girl that rapes our eyes with vulgar clothes.
ALEXANADAR
Now I see why they gave you to me. You understand so many things.
JANKO
Maybe I cannot understand everything at this age, but I can certainly feel. One
must not think only intellect is important. Feeling/knowing- both is important.
ALEXANADAR
What is the composer that YOU like the most?
JANKO
Bach.
ALEXANADAR
Oh my God, that is one of my favorite too. Why did you choose him?
JANKO
Because he is incredibly harmonious. His notes are like cosmic symphonyeverything in its place. You shouldnt relocate anything or the universe will
collapse
ALEXANADAR
(Goes to the gramophone, plays certain thing from Bach- which is not with orchestra.
Certain piece on piano or cembalo.)- Continue I am not interrupting you.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

16

JANKO
Everything is in a perfect order. Yet- he, the composer, Bach- has a perfect notion of
this order. So he can play with the notes, travel in this cosmic space of sound and
energy, completely lonesome, nonetheless we are all listening to him. He is doing so
many experiments and variations around the composition, not ruining this cosmic
order. On the contrary by this he is showing us he admires this order.
ALEXANADAR
Gat ya`! (Pointing his finger towards Janko.)- You wanted to be alone (that is why
you have no friends, because here all from your age are delinquents) and you are for
order. Your taste for music reflects your persona!
JANKO
My taste for music reflects my personality which is normal. Why does this seem so
conspicuous to you? Everybodys taste for music reflects his personality; not
persona. This term and the thing it means are too complicated, so the relationship
between this two is too complicated for an ordinary man to be able to comprehend.
ALEXANADAR
You are not ordinary. You can be rex.
JANKO
Maybe I can but I dont want to.
ALEXANADAR
Why?
JANKO
Why shall I want? What a funny notion- everybody wants to be king!?
ALEXANADAR
Its a great, divine thing. You can influence so many things. Put the things on their
right place. To make everything happen your way; not everybody to make you do
things their way.
JANKO
Enough! I dont want to be big because that is silly. That is for people like you that
enhance certain dictatorial attitudes. I am for freedom and democracy. I want to
become what I want to, not become somebody that already is a rex.
ALEXANADAR
You dont feel pride when you see king? You dont want to become like him?
JANKO
Pride is for gay pride. I am not like those that always want to become like somebody
they are not already. I dont want to become like you, for example, because you steal
money and intellectual property from honest people. Than you always arrange
somehow not to end up in jail for it and you manage to present somebody elses
honest work as yours. All this is allowed because you are big?

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

17

ALEXANADAR
My friend you are still young. You dont understand the things in this rotten world.
If you dont want to be big than they are going to make you a victim. And there will
be nobody to care about yo`.
JANKO
You we pronounce . Youll better learn better our language . Here everybody
has accent, the pronunciation is not standardized and it is easy for a person like you
that is not native to hide amongst us. But still, you should improve your
pronunciation for your own sake.
ALEXANADAR
I am big, but I am not perfect. Is that what you are trying to tell me? (Approaches
Janko, sits on the hand holders of Jankos armchair and hugs him sensually.)
JANKO
(He rejects Alexandars hug.)- Stay away, keep the distance!
Alexandar returns on his chair.
JANKO
I didnt want to tell you about that. You are so obsessed by your grandeur that you
think that everybody thinks about it all the time. Maybe somebody thinks about
your bad breath all the time?
ALEXANADAR
My breath smells on expensive whisky!
JANKO
Even though- you should know you are not fascinating in any way. You are boring,
selfish and irritating.
ALEXANADAR
I had to become like everybody here, my friend. When I came here I used to think
that if you are with crime you should try to look as normal as possible so that no one
will have doubts what you are. But here the best is if everybody knows that you are
a criminal and then no one can get you. Society here - for those like me - provides
amazing privileges. Such as to know that some child is a victim of domestic violence,
and then provides you with the opportunity to enjoy certain violent activities over
his fresh body. It is not difficult to be violent and happy. Conscience is an imaginary
psychic category invented by the bored housewives and their impotent husbands.
One can here find out that somebody has nowhere to sleep and nothing to eat; that
somebodies 5year old daughter was raped, and the parents have no money for
tranquilizers, but they have to meet the rapist at the bureau from which each week
they take their social help; one can laugh each time he sees these tormented people

and make them feel really bad and that same one with that can start a serious
career in the show business or politics. The prostitutes have better notion of
morality from the monks that in their monasteries hide the drug dealers. They
never wore black, the color of purity, THEY didnt betray the oath. If they wear
black they can attract no clients in that darkness of the night. On the sidewalks the
night protects its children. I adapted myself here easily. It can be dangerous though
if you show you have any integrity. They couldnt recognize I have some civilize
gens. I began eating the cheap local food, my ten became spoiled, my face peasantlike, my eyebrows Cromanonian. I got amazingly scared how senseless, how
emotionless I had become; I couldnt remember anything from my previous life. My
feet became larger, my hands too, my head, my buttocks. And hair, I have got
myself amazing amounts of hair. I even grew 10centimetres. All this from amazing
fear: is this me, the animal- with the body that leaves the last 1second time zone,
and eyes that are forgetting everything from the last blink.
JANKO
You drink too much. We should move to the kitchen. Food neutralizes alcohol, thats
how they say here.
ALEXANADAR
You are speaking too much; you are speaking against the system. That is the first
thing I had to learn here. If they find out you speak bad against something- you
may be in serious trouble.
JANKO
Relax. Nobody will find out what are we speaking about. The equipment for bugging
is still very expensive. You should know though that they say that in about 10years
it is going to become so cheap that everyone can buy it in the local supermarket
(well black-market). You shouldnt be paranoid about anything. Do it like me: Just
say to yourself if they catch me I will know how to do it with them.
ALEXANADAR
Do it? What is it? Who are them?
JANKO
It is those that you will have to collaborate with; them are those that have caught
you.
ALEXANADAR
(He drinks his glass of whisky quickly till the last drop. His eyes are becoming red
from despair.)- They wont catch me! They have no reason for that!
JANKO
Wrong. If theres no reason they are going to make it for you.
ALEXANADAR
You are so young and so sick.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

19

JANKO
You are already caught. Why did you have to die? You may tell me. For some reason
you were supposed to go to jail. Do you remember why?
ALEXANADAR
I cannot remember something that never happened. I am from here and I always
was.
JANKO
Where are your parents?
ALEXANADAR
They are not here. They cannot be where they are not. They are from another world
because I am semi God.
JANKO
If both of your parents were gods than you would have been God entirely, not semi
God.
ALEXANADAR
Thats what I thought too, but I am here. And I hate it. If I was God I would have
had the power to run away from here.
JANKO
Nobody can run away from here, thats why here is worst. Only the worst cases like
you end up here. People here are incredibly bad, only this kind of people can deal
with the cases like yours.
ALEXANADAR
I had a case? Where is it?
JANKO
In your rectum You are the case.
ALEXANADAR
I have never, ever heard anything worse.
JANKO
Welcome to the club. And I heard the same. Many times. We are one of a kind. You
are amongst yours that is how you should think.
ALEXANADAR
How was it?
JANKO
At first I thought I could die. I didnt want to be in the club. In spite of everything I
thought I was in the posh club. I wanted to kill myself. But later I find out there
was no posh club at all. Actually everybody was in my club. So I thought, God had
rewarded me with this wonderful opportunity to be near all the members from the
club.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

20

ALEXANADAR
Liar. You can lie only yourself, not me. I am a careful listener. You said you didnt
want to talk with all of them so that you wont become one of them.
JANKO
I am not lying. Do you remember that you are forgetting everything that happened
a second ago?
ALEXANADAR
How can I possibly remember if I really forget?
JANKO
What did you like here the most?
ALEXANADAR
As I sad: My body, my big hands and my new horse teeth.
JANKO
I am sorry but you mentioned no teeth.
ALEXANADAR
All right. Sorry about that. I am forgetting.
JANKO
Do you remember that due to your greed and corruption hundreds of people died?
ALEXANADAR
No.
JANKO
You dont remember you murdered so many people?
ALEXANADAR
I do remember, nobody can forget that.
JANKO
Not even you, though you are god?
ALEXANADAR
I said I am semi God. Still I do have something to do with the human.
JANKO
With the human? And what is that?
ALEXANADAR
To rule them.
JANKO
Than you are not God, just rex.
ALEXANADAR
Yeah. Rex like any other. You know how we are. We want for us what implies for
the rest. We are sided so to speak. I found some pretty interesting staff here; as that
Latin Church. Nothing rots in it. The scull of St. Nikola, Santa Cross is in its walls.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

21

The name of the city where the monastery is Prilep which means bat. Imagine that,
isnt that glorious. The eternal life.
JANKO
You are fan of the vampires? If you are at least a little human you should be more
rational. You should know that there could be rational explanation for everything,
perhaps strong magnetic field.
ALEXANADAR
We dont have rational pragmatism. We are above everything.
JANKO
Who are we?
ALEXANADAR
Our kind.
JANKO
Speak for yourself. I am not from your kind.
ALEXANADAR
(All of a sudden he appears completely changed, sober, as he had not drunk
anything.)- I never said you were from our kind! You want to become one of us!
JANKO
And eat the cheap food and behave like a no-no. I can do better than that.
ALEXANADAR
You are not going to have a possibility for that since we are not going to let you.
Soon you will discover how it is to be without us. Nobody can escape from us. We
are so many, we have power and we like it.
JANKO
Soon? You have some kind of a plan for me?
ALEXANADAR
That is actually the best option. The worst it will be if you discover about us later in
your adulthood. When you have children you will be terrified that they are slipping
away from you and you cannot do anything about it. When you realize we were
everywhere around you, in the kindergarten, in the bank, at your working place, in
your bedroom it will be too late.
JANKO
Than why did you say soon?
ALEXANADAR
Because I noticed you are susceptible for us. You want to become one of us. That is
good. You have one of us You have me.
JANKO
Thats nonsense. I am against you, dont you see?

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

22

ALEXANADAR
I see you are from us. I see that from the way you are watching me. You will say you
were watching me so because you hated me from the deepest depths of your guts. I
was like you. I didnt want anybody to find out how much I wanted that energy, that
power all around me, which adored me so much that just at one blink of the eye
everything started to function for me. All those servants of me- the rex, connected in
that powerful blissfulness health eternal youth.
JANKO
So what happened? How come you stayed out of the heavens-society; society that
existed so long for us, yet we were stupid to use it? Only you were clever enough to
go for it. How come a clever guy like you ended up in a dumb like this?
ALEXANADAR
I know you dont mean what you say. You are afraid I may find out how much you
want to become one of us.
JANKO
(With deprecation in his voice.)- What do I have to do in order to become one of you?
ALEXANADAR
You should like to build. To create, to invent. To be an architect.
JANKO
Why do you think everybody wants to be something important? Most of us just want
to live a common, happy life.
ALEXANADAR
How can a common life be a happy life? Most of the human are commoners; most of
the human are starving. There is no space for happiness in their life.
JANKO
They are starving during the whole year, but on Christmas they gather with their
children and enjoy happy moments. They always manage to paste something for
those moments. I admire common people.
ALEXANADAR
You dont! You are a liar, thats why you want to be with me. In the orphanage you
are surrounded by common people. You want to be more than that; so you are going
to associate with somebody from my kind.
JANKO
Those from the orphanage are commoners but are not honest. I want to associate
with honest commoners.
ALEXANADAR
All commoners are dishonest. If they want to be able to afford those few precious
moments; if they want to be able to keep their children, they have to steal from
somebody, mostly from each other. Than if they dont want to end up in jail or to let

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

23

the state take away their bellowed ones (to separate them so to speak) they need
somebody like me to let them to. They need me, the rex. Without me all that will be
impossible.
JANKO
You are frustrated because nobody is afraid from you anymore, that is why you
want to show yourself as not powerless. In fact honest people placed you in jail,
because of the severe crimes you committed. You published your own necrology (so
to speak) and because you have large bank account you may run with it in a
corruptive environment like ours. But it was not easy to keep yourself- yourself. In
order to reduce your frustration you have to feel there is somebody beneath you.
There is nobody beneath you. Only your dead ancestors. I can understand your
depravedness; beneath you is only mother earth and your dead ancestors. They can
join you, if they become zombies, or you can join them.
ALEXANADAR
You are talking about the parallel dimension? I have seen people with extra sense;
they can reach the world of the dead
JANKO
(He is interrupting Alexandar with harshness in his voice.)- I am telling you: You
should shut up. The walls have ears; somebody may hear you. Many people do hate
you; many people do despise you. They lost their bellowed because of you. They
want to see you destroyed and humiliated.
ALEXANADAR
You are giving me a friendly advice. You see you want to be with us; you want to
join. You need ours.
JANKO
Stop it! Dont you see you dont have yours? Those that were around you were aware
you have large
ALEXANADAR
Large?
JANKO
account. Thats why you had their eye contact. Why they dont contact you now?
ALEXANADAR
They think I am dead?
JANKO
They know better than that; they dont want to be in trouble because of you. So they
pretend, they lie, as they know nothing about all this.
ALEXANADAR
You cannot accuse mine for something everybody has- existential syndrome.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

24

JANKO
Yours were mine; they were my kind. People that have where to sleep and what to
eat dont have existential syndrome. Why dont you have existential syndrome?
ALEXANADAR
Because I have large account. Enough with this! I have learned your lesson well.
Additionally you should try to learn something from me.
JANKO
I am not sure I want to. I dont want to end up like you.
ALEXANADAR
Everybody that is me ends up like me. Youll see sooner or later youll goanna desire
to be on my place.
JANKO
I have existential syndrome. People with this dont have a desire.
ALEXANADAR
One does not have desire to have the impetus to keep his life going.
JANKO
Sorry I am too young: Impetus was instinct? ... My life is not endangered, nor it will
ever be. I am honest.
ALEXANADAR
You still havent felt that sophisticated evil. You ARE too young. Society still tries to
put that shelter around you in order to keep you safe from itself till you reach
certain age. Than you will be just another fish in the swamp. The most honest
people go through worst, because nobody is afraid of them. The more dishonest you
get, richer youll become; richer you become, safer you are. As you may see in the
orphanage nobody cares about the poor. The health of those children is neglected as
much as their spirit. They will develop in human animals, with no faith in the
future. No wonder everybody tries to escape these institutions. All they know of is
humiliation.
JANKO
Depending where- in some developed civilizations life in the orphanages can be as
good as in an expensive private high-school. For example the great composer Vivaldi
was working in an orphanage that provided its protgs so qualitative upbringing
that the aristocrats begun to leave there their own babies under a false name in a
shoe-box; when they reach certain age they were taking them back with them.
ALEXANADAR
I know that case. You see theres no data from the children. Nobody knows how life
there was for them; nobody ever asked them. That is actually just another example
how hypocritical our civilization is. Richer you get; more selfish and niggard you
become. Those aristocrats just wanted to save money.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

25

JANKO
You are always right. Why do you think I want to be with you? Why do you think I
wont tell??
ALEXANADAR
You will have no other opportunity than this. Either you are with us, or you are for
us. Otherwise you are dead. Dead is everybody that has no value.
JANKO
You are dead, and as far as I am concerned you were never valuable. But you had
the opportunity. You were from a reach family in Western Europe. But you run
away from them.
ALEXANADAR
I didnt run away completely. I still communicate with my brother. I had to stay
apart from them due to the the things I prefer.
JANKO
And what are those things?
ALEXANADAR
You dont have to know everything about me. Not at this stage. That can be
dangerous for you. Anyway what do you think, why did I had to run away from
home? Because of this! I wanted to be with this. Ordinary people just finish their
daily duties and are not interested in the world order, or at least not as much as I
am.
JANKO
You had to be interested; after all you were the rex, not one of them! (He begins to
laugh.)
ALEXANADAR
Son, you should be ashamed of yourself. You shouldnt behave like this in front of
me. Dont you see I am older? I am- gentle-man, or how do you pronounce that on
your language.
JANKO
Ups! Now we are polite! (He continues to lough.)
ALEXANADAR
Youll see how it feels when you reach my age.
JANKO
I am not going to reach your age. I am going to die earlier, in a more reasonable age.
I dont believe in long life. Everybody when reaches certain age becomes grumpy
and ugly like you.
ALEXANADAR
You dont like the smell of my cologne.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

26

JANKO
I like that one, Alexandar, but sorry to disappoint you, when on you it smells like
rotten garbage.
ALEXANADAR
It hurts me to hear that.
JANKO
That
should
be better told by somebody that you know, like me, Alexandar.
Otherwise they may hurt you. You will be in a delusion thinking you are something;
unexpectedly they will tell you were ugly. They have hurt me already, thats why I
am so open with you.
ALEXANADAR
(Goes to the bottle and fills his glass with whiskey. He drinks quickly.)- You still
dont know how it is to be hurt. You are lucky. You dont know what pain is.
JANKO
Well tell me! What is pain?
ALEXANADAR
To see somebody murdered that you cared most of in front of you very eyes, nobody
cares about you, yet everybody around you laughs in your face.
JANKO
Ught I agree that must have been pretty painful. How did that happen to that
person?
ALEXANADAR
Its not a person. They were my wife and two children.
JANKO
How did that happen?
ALEXANADAR
In a car crash. But it wasnt an accident. I know they murdered them, because of
me. They thought they could scare me by that. Thats how I should tell them. You
cannot imagine how was it to see those tiny smashed faces, in that smacked metal.
JANKO
Wow! The car, was it an expensive one?
ALEXANADAR
(He drinks from the glass with anger.)- You really hate me, dont you?
JANKO
Just like everybody else; while you were alive of course. It would not be normal
anybody not to hate a guy like you.
ALEXANADAR
This is your way of telling me you were normal.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

27

JANKO
Since you asked me Did they murder them because of your rotten designs?
ALEXANADAR
No, because I had that foundation that was helping the people in danger from our
enemies in the war. I wasnt with them. I decided to invest in that, Janko, so that
they wont turn into communism. I pulled out many people from there. I consulted
about this many experts, and they all told me this was a wise investment.
JANKO
They lied you. They wanted you to experience tragedy.
ALEXANADAR
Why? I paid them. On time.
JANKO
It is so obvious you have no moral. You invested in that foundation, but now you are
hiding amongst communists. People sense this.
ALEXANADAR
They are all senseless bustards. How can anybody do that to innocent children?
JANKO
The same way you did. Just be selfish. As you were with your project. You knew the
building is going to fall yet you did it because you wanted everybody to applaud at
your fascinating design.
ALEXANADAR
(He throws the glass as mad as hell. He approaches Janko with anger as he wants to
attack him.)
JANKO
Oh Alexandar. Please dont kill me. I was not supposed to speak with you in that
manner. You are our rex, our king. Everything is always your way, not mine. I was
a boy, stupid enough to believe that democracy, human rights really exist. I was in a
delusion. They were having you, the rex. Not poor citizens like me.
ALEXANADAR
Why do they always give me smelly bastards like you? I am a decent man; this is an
office, not a stable. People live in this country. We are civilized
The lights go down. The scene is in a complete darkness.
JANKO
(With laughter in his voice.)- The civilization invented electricity and its reduction.
ALEXANADAR
I cannot believe where I am living. Where they reduce electricity each time there is
an economy crisis.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

28

JANKO
What are we going to do now? Is that your big hand on my knee?
ALEXANADAR
I am trying to find where to sit. And the music went down. Without it is so
depressing. (He begins to cry.)- This is like during the First World War
In off begins to appear the sound of bombs, and lights as thunderstruck.
Scene 2
The scene is a saloon in a gothic medieval castle. The furniture is from this
period. On the left side big gothic window with heavy curtain covered with
dust. In the far left - exhibited on the stone wall - an amour from a knight,
On the right, period furniture. Big table is prepared for dinner. The scenelight imitates light from the candles; candles are placed around the room.
On the far right, the entrance/exit of this room. This is a stone corridor
which goes down.
In the middle in his livery is Rober- responsible for the children. From behind the
curtain we can see the lighting from the bombs. Children, Aleksandar (9), his brother
Johan (11) and his sister Ana (5), are trying to watch behind the curtain. Rober pulls
them away.
ROBER
Everybody on the table. Immediately. The meal will become cold. (He blows few
candles, so that it will become darker.)- Once again. Nobody is allowed to open the
curtain. They can see us and strike us.
They sit to eat.
ROBER
Alexandar you will say the prayer!
Alexandar says the prayer, they begin to eat.
ROBER
Did everybody wash his hands? Alexandar show your hands.
ALEXANDAR
(He shows his hands towards Rober.)

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

29

ROBER
Alexandar?
ALEXANDAR
They are not dirty. They are in a shadow from the candles. Theres not enough
water.
ANA
He is lying. He was playing on the stairs, with those dirty cubes. Constructing his
ugly castles.
ALEXANDAR
You are ugly. Not my cubes.
Ana puls Alexandars hair. He yells.
ROBER
(He rings the bell for the servant.)- Young man you are going to wash those hands
immediately.
MARY
(She arrives in her servant uniform.)- What? Is it too chilly again? I had to make it
chilly. It is so cold here for the children.
ROBER
Please bring the staff for the young man to wash his hands.
MARY
In a second (She exits.)
ANA
You sad the artillery cannot reach us? They are too far.
ROBER
Once again- everybody away from the window. We dont want to check that.
JOHAN
Why do they fight?
ROBER
Because they are stupid!
ANA
(Towards Alexandar.)- Like you!
Alexandar throws piece of bread at Anas face. She hits him on his face. He begins to
cry.
ROBER
Enough. If this happens again - both of you in the basement, 8 hours.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

30

JOHAN
Anyway we would have been safer there.
ROBER
I was thinking about that option dear. Unfortunately that is too risky. It is too cold.
We cannot heat the basement. You may catch some of those dangerous diseases.
Sound of strong explosion in off. Dust falls from the sealing.
ROBER
Everybody beneath the table!
They all hide beneath the table. Their voices come from there.
ANA
(In panic.)- Where are our parents?
ROBER
To fight on the good side.
ANA
But you just told us that they were all stupid.
ROBER
Ups On the less stupid side.
ANA
Where is Mary? She should have been back by now?
ROBER
I am going out to find her. Everybody stays beneath the table. Is this clear? (He
exits the space beneath the table, than the room.)
ALL OF THE CHILDREN
Clear as the sun!
ANA
Why you always ask about the war? Dad told us not to talk about that in front of
anybody while they are away?
ALEXANDAR
I never sad
ANA
Stop it, you self-indulged boy, you always think everything is about you! Johan?
JOHAN
If you may, than I may too.
ANA
Thats not the same. I am a girl.
Nobody takes me serious. You see Rober

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

31

can be a spy
ROBER
(Enters. His hands are covered with blood, his eyes are filled with tears.)- What have
you just sad?
The children appear from beneath the cloth of the table.
ANA
ThatYou cryWhy are your hands covered with blood?
JOHAN
Where is Mary?
ALEXANDAR
She is (He begins to cry, and hugs Ana.)
ANA
(SherRejects Alaxandars hands around her neck. She begins to cry.)- You are awful.
You killed her with your dirty hands!
Again in off begins the sound of the bombs. They are all yelling at each other. But we
cannot hear what. The sound of the bombs is too loud. Rober blows all the candles.
The scene is completely in darkness. Only the lightings from the bombs are visible
from behinds the curtain.
Scene 3
The scene looks like a cheap hospital. There are three metal beds. In one of
them lies Janko. The walls are covered with green antiseptic plastic. On
the little table aside Jankos bad are bananas, oranges, box with candies.
Behind Jankos bed is a closet that with its doors is parallel to the scene.
The social worker is sitting next to Jankos bad on a cheap wooden chair, on the side
closer to the audience. On the other side sits he, her assistant (man in black suit with
sunglasses, almost all the time during this interview he is holding his cross hands
position and chewing a chewing gum with his lips strictly closed).
THE SOCIAL WORKER
You feel fine? We shouldnt worry about you?
JANKO
Yes. I am grateful that you let me spent some time here.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

32

THE SOCIAL WORKER

How was your last visit to the king?
JANKO
So and so, he speaks a lot, though he is not really talkative. (He pronounces the next
3sentences by imitating Alaxandars way of speaking.)- It is not good for a man to
talk a lot. Real men dont talk, they think and create. Besides one never knows if
the person he is speaking to is some kind of a spy.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
I dont like to hear this. He shouldnt talk with you in that manner. It seems he is
not aware of your age.
JANKO
He is nice, but somehow I feel sleepy, exhausted from his talk. I am loosing so much
time trying to figure out what he is trying to tell me. He is speaking in some kind of
codes.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
So you do feel kind of sick from all this. It is like the doctors have told us after all.
This is unhealthy for a person of your age.
JANKO
Doubtlessly I would like to continue. Everything that is out of the orphanage is
healthier as far as I am concerned. By the way, you told me that if I am a successful
collaborator I can go further with you and do something for myself which can turn
me into a success story
Man in black caught in a very indicative manner.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
You were with us? But who are we? Everybody will ask you like that.
JANKO
You are the people the people from the other side.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
There is no other side. Like that they will tell you. It was just you with your misery.
You see. I told you. You have to keep secretive about everything. Nobody should
know anything about you.
JANKO
I am not so miserable anymore, lets face it. Look what kind of shoes I am wearing.
Even those that inhabit closer area towards the headquarters cannot wear these.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Closer area?

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

33

JANKO
Shall I say? You have just told me I should remain secretive Area around the
headquarters of the communist party.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
There we go. You know, but you are not allowed to.
JANKO
As the matter of fact everybody that is not blind knows, but nobody speaks about it.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Because it is dangerous. They are aware of the danger- that if they speak they will
be exposed. But this is understandable for your case. You had no parents to teach
you.
JANKO
Alexandar wasnt from here just till very recent. That is why he doesnt know. That
is why the two of us may be together. Is that what you are trying to tell me?
THE SOCIAL WORKER
You may be together because you wont tell about all this.
JANKO
What if I tell?
THE SOCIAL WORKER
(Sinisterly.)- You dont want to find out about that!
JANKO
I say even if I tell, nobody will thrust me. Plus there will be nobody to hear me. In a
society where everything is so bad nobody wants to hear about elses miseries.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
First, it is not as bad as it seems to you. You are too young, later you will get used to
all that
JANKO
That? What is that?
THE SOCIAL WORKER
The world that surrounds us Second, the fact that there is nobody to hear you
proves that your situation wasnt so bad compared with the others. They had some
pretty rough time as well. So you shouldnt complain.
JANKO
How can you be so selfish, joyless? You care about nobody, do you?
THE SOCIAL WORKER
I care about you. If I didnt, I would have thrown you back in your tormented
orphanage after you told me these filthy words. But I am not going to. I am aware
that you are still young; you need some time to learn how to behave in front of your

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

34

superiors. From this you should learn that everybody you address in this manner is
going to turn his back on you, and not care about your destiny, health, life
JANKO
You know about this from your experience
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Maybe Why should you know everything about me? You shouldnt ask personal
questions, but just professional. How can I be professional all the time? It is not
easy for me, you will tell me, and it is not easy for anybody else. You see, you have
to make choices, what is good, what is bad for you. We all make choices. That is
inevitable.
JANKO
You are not my superior. How can you be? We are all gods children, we are all
equal for him. Some Christian you are? You are lying all the time. First you sad the
orphanage was not so bad, now you say it was a nightmare. You cannot be above
me, because you have to lie all the time. I cannot thrust you about anything!
The man in black produces a noise with the chair screeching the floor:
schreeeeeeeess
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Again you were reading the books you shouldnt! I have told you many times, dont
read the religious books. They are bad for you. They are bad for your mind. Ohh I
forgot in the orphanages are leaving the recycled books. No wonder, you are reading
them. They say nobody in orphanages reads, but you were a sort of an exception. I
will tell to those from that institution to give you some better books. It is good that
you mentioned this. Books in the public spaces- that will be the topic of our next
plenum.
JANKO
You may tell them to give us some more heating and better food as well. That is
why we are so pale. It is not true that all of us take drugs.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
That is expensive! Like that they will tell you
JANKO
Just tell them to give us some extra bread from the elephant from the zoo-garden.
And some extra fruits from the chimps. They give them too much. Usually more
than half of their food rots. I think you may tell them this. They wont criticize you
for criticizing the communist society. You will tell them that this society in its
constitution guaranties the wealth of the people, not of the animals.

THE SOCIAL WORKER

Stop it, again you speak too much. Somebody can hear us. Somebody that shouldnt.
JANKO
Sorry I thought this gay is yours.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Even if he is, that doesnt mean he wont tell. Why shouldnt he?
JANKO
Because he will lose us. We dont like people that are traitors. He will lose you.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
He wont lose me. I would have done the same on his place. Here we are all like
that.
JANKO
He will lose you because you will know that he deceived you, because for that he
will gain something. Like I am gaining by doing this with Alexandar. That is why
you dont have me. You are just talking with me. You are working me.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Thats nonsense. Everybody has somebody. Somebody has you
JANKO
Nobody has me; anybody has you. That is how things are in this country. Maybe in
some other country they would have sad: We dont speak in front of everybody what
we spoke with our friends because that is violation of privacy that is against our
constitution. Here they have violations. I learned that already.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
You have a lot more to learn dear kid. So how was with the king? Did you see some
change in him?
JANKO
He has put some extra wait more than the last time. Obviously you dont let him
move a lot.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
We dont let him move alone at all. Otherwise we let him move as much as he likes.
JANKO
He doesnt like to move if he is not alone?
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Why dont you ask him about that? This is an interesting thing for us to find out.
(She is opening her purse and takes a pen and agenda. She writes something.)
JANKO
Theres no need for you to research about this. Everybody wants to walk alone
sometime.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

36

THE SOCIAL WORKER

Well You dont know about psychology yet. That may tell us about some other
things about him. Maybe he is fantasizing to run away from us?
JANKO
He is not. He is with death penalty.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Thrust me, you cannot imagine what kind of things go through a mind of a prisoner.
JANKO
You told me he is not a prisoner.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
You are not a prisoner too, but you feel as such while in the orphanage. Prisoner is a
term rather from psychology in this case.
JANKO
Or from social services. Since everybody feels like a prisoner in this country!
The man in black again produces that noise with his chair and pronounces few nasty
words by almost not opening his mouth, at the end he gives one fake spit.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Look now what you did. You made him angry. Why do you always speak against
your own country? You should appreciate it more because because it gives you a
place to sleep and where to eat. Imagine how it would be for you if you didnt have
your country, like that they will tell you!
JANKO
Than if this is a perfect country, why are you afraid that somebody may hear you
what you speak or find out what you think. Arent we all free citizens?
THE SOCIAL WORKER
We are. That is why we have to appreciate what we have.
JANKO
We might have each other, not our country. How can everybody have a whole
country; only the king can have the whole country? Who is the king? Alexandar is
the rex.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Even if he is he, he will certainly not be allowed to do whatever he likes in our
country; nevertheless whatever he likes with our children. He is not allowed to walk
alone since he shouldnt be.
JANKO
Maybe he didnt offer a prize enough high?

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

37

THE SOCIAL WORKER

You are suggesting that we are with corruption?
JANKO
Well he should have been in prison. Did you forget he is with a death penalty?
THE SOCIAL WORKER
That is just a small aberration in our system. We needed his money for our
economy. Everybody does some compromises.
JANKO
Why dont you imprison him? Evidently nobody cares about him.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Oh it does. Those from the banks care about him. Only he can open the payment
code.
JANKO
He can open the bank code but not our rectum?
THE SOCIAL WORKER
It is good you sad about that (She opens her agenda and writes something.
Afterwards turns off few pages and reads something. She shows those pages to
Janko.)- You see that I didnt lie to you? He may not do that to you. You are our
citizen, we can protect you.
JANKO
How can you protect me? If he doesnt gain what hes intended to, he wont pay us.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Why? Why does he want to do that with you? What do you think?
JANKO
You havent heard the tape yet? He said it very clear. Because he thinks he is semi
God. Only to the gods it was allowed to do those things with children, or only to
them it was allowed to do whatever they like. Be incestuous etc. He wants me to
become his interrex. In ancient times it was believed that the emperors were
children of gods. That is why they were allowed to build whatever they liked. But
the law sad each may be emperor 10 years, and then must die; in this world only,
because the emperor cannot die. Soon they find out how to trick this legislation.
Short time before the period of 10years expires they were replacing the emperor
with a small boy, that symbolized the rebirth of the emperor. They would execute
the boy and then the emperor would continue to rule.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
He wants to kill you so that he can be emperor?
JANKO
And build whatever he likes. The old man is sick.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

38

THE SOCIAL WORKER

How did you feel in front of such grandeur? Usually children are telling us that they
were feeling that something big was going to happen, that they are going to be a
part of major historical event. That the superior part of the human kind was in
front of them; spreading its arms for them, enhancing them, immersing them in
that godly substance.
JANKO
Maybe the other children. Not me.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
You werent tempted at all to do that with him?
JANKO
No. I dont understand how other children could. At my age nobody knows about
that.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
At first they dont know. Later they want it so bad that that becomes part of them
and they begin to fantasize about the rex. And it happens before the time it is
normal to happen.
JANKO
I am too normal. What happened to the other children?
THE SOCIAL WORKER
They vanished somewhere, abroad Dont look at me like that. They disappeared.
They died.
JANKO
The children died?
THE SOCIAL WORKER
That is what happens when you reach certain age. Like that they will tell you. And
you are afraid now. I can see that in your eyes.
JANKO
We are all afraid of dying.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
What did you expect from this; some terrific scientific discoveries? That is what
happens to the Interrex- he dies. That is his porpoise. Thanks God you understood
that by yourself. Other children did not, but they wanted to do that with the rex.
You are somehow an exception. No wonder you are so afraid. You know so much
about this, but you dont want to become Interrex. Your fear I must say is justified.
We may disappear you. You must coop with us! Is this understood? How do you feel
now? Can you have the meeting with the rex soon? He thinks you are mesmerizing.
I can hardly wait to hear what will he tell us on your next meeting.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

39

JANKO
He will tell me. Not to you or anybody else. Dont violate my copyright. Oh I forgot
you are taping everything.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
So you are OK? You dont need any help from a psychologist or something?
JANKO
Well I am little embarrassed to tell you
THE SOCIAL WORKER
You can tell me but you are ashamed because there is another man here? (To the
man in black.)- Leave us alone.
MAN IN BLACK
(Ironically he is moving his head up and down meaning- yes. He stands from the
chair and opens the closet behind him. There is a tape recorder that is rolling. He
puts new tape and starts it rolling.)- Dont speak more than 3hours. (He closes the
closet and leaves the room.)
JANKO
Why do you think I am less ashamed in front of you? Oh yes, you told me. Because
at this age all the orphans see all the women as mothers.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
I am not for the witch of the system. I am against it too. I am cool.
JANKO
Now you are saying that. I think you are collaborating with them as much as
everybody else.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Just a little. To have for fancy clothes, soap that doesnt eat my face and food that
causes me no farts.
JANKO
Give some of that food to me sis. (He farts.)
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Why do you think he is my guy? He is my guy. I wanted to speak about something
with you.
JANKO
And with everybody else (He looks at the closet with the tape recorder.)
THE SOCIAL WORKER
(She takes a look at the closet.)- Oh that Do you think anybody ever listens to
those tapes? So how did you guessed?
JANKO
You are not hiding anything in front of him, even if it is something dangerous for
you. From the way you look at each other? He looks like you. You two

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

40

are similar as one of a kind.

THE SOCIAL WORKER
Is it so obvious? Oh my God. Do you think he will propose me.
JANKO
I doubt it he will ever get married. As far as I can see he is from those that are
married to their job. He will never step at the crazy stone. Wake up little girl. I
think he will listen to this tape. Take care what you say.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
We always take care what we speak. We never lose control. You dont take care
what you speak, because you are too young. But you as well never lose control.
Sorry, you wanted to ask me something but you were embarrassed.
JANKO
When I speak with the old man afterwards I have the amazing desire to go to the
loo like every 10minutes. Is something wrong with me?
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Oh no sweetheart. That happens to everybody. Your metabolism is not used to
cigarettes and booze yet, so reacts as a sort of an allergy.
JANKO
Oh thanks God. I thought I will have to go to one of those electro-therapies
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Why did you say we were similar? You are the first one to tell me this.
JANKO
Because you are. You that work this are all look-a-likes; you are all like brothers
and sisters. You all became the same. Havent you seen you both have same cheeks,
eye color, eyebrows, hair color? The same is the way you both are walking. Even you
prefer the same food type.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Oh shit We are (She hugs Janko.)- We are relatives. We never noticed this
similarity. Do we look as close relatives?
JANKO
To be honest when I saw you for the first time I thought you were brother and
sister. I wonder how somebody else didnt notice that too. Oh yes, because you all
SS-communist-babes look similar.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Shit. Now I hope something wrong wont come out of this. You know that we all
have many ID cards, and many names, birthdates and birthplaces. I noticed he
speaks a lot about the birthplace of my mother. I questioned him and find out that

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

41

my mother and his father are brother and sister. They were 6children in the family.
It is practically impossible to keep evidence about all this.
JANKO
In this country everything is impossible, but on purpose.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Dont speak like that of your own country. They may put you in trouble for lack of
patriotism. Oh shit, lets hope I wont be in trouble because I sad this this.
JANKO
You wont be as long as you dont plan to have a family with him. That can be bad
for your baby; remember he is almost your brother.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
(She begins to cry. She hugs Janko. She places his hand on her stomach.)- Third
month.
Scene 4
The set is the same as from the Scene 2, but now it is not war-time. The
curtains are not covered with dust; the cover at the table is clean and
ironed. It is a bright summer day, the sunlight slides through the window,
We can see mountain landscape through it. On the table are the childrens
toy-cubes which form a sort of unusual castle-house. In off sometimes we
can hear the song of the birds sometimes the sheep-flock passing by. The
scene seems completely empty when it begins.
MARIANA
(she iseEntering the room from the door on the right side. She has on her face a mask
from the carnival that imitates some monster. ) - Where is my baby? I am going to
find you and eat you. (She stands aside the window and stares at the landscape. For
herself) - Isnt this a beautiful day? Like in the paintings (She lights herself a
cigarette and begins to smoke. The table moves. One cube from the castle falls down.
She looks behind herself, sees what happened. She throws the cigarette through the
window. She carefully approaches the table. She goes beneath it.)
Alexandar is screaming and trying to run away from his mother, from beneath the
table. Mariana is holding his leg. She places Alexandar on the table and pretends as
she is a monster that is trying to eat him.
MARIANA
Grrrrr Why are you running away from me?

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

42

ALEXANDAR
Because you are a monster. You will eat me.
MARIANA
I am a good monster. I will not eat you if you tell me you were a gentleman.
ALEXANDAR
I am. I am.
MARIANA
Than why are you running away? Real gentleman has nothing to hide.
ALEXANDAR
(He takes off his mothers mask and laughs.)- It is you. You are not monster, you are
mama.
MARIANA
You are wrong. I was transformed as your mother, but I am a monster. (She makes
a grimace in order to look scary and screams like a tiger.)
ALAXANDAR
(Again begins to scream frightened.)
MARIANA
(She begins to tickle him.)
ALEXANDAR
(He begins to laugher frenetically.)
MARIANA
Who are you big boy? The monster wants to know who you are.
ALEXANDAR
I am Alexandar.
MARIANA
Are you a gentleman?
ALEXANDAR
I am.
MARIANA
Why can you be?
ALEXANDAR
Because I never lie.
MARIANA
And what if I torture you? You will have to lie.
ALEXANDAR
You will not torture me. Because that is a way to may lose me.
MARIANA
I will lose you. So what? I dont care about you.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

43

ALEXANDAR
You do care about me. You know I will be a big builder.
MARIANA
I care about you because youll become a big builder, not because I am your mother?
You are lying big boy. I am going to torture you.
ALEXANDAR
(He changes his voice like a grown up man, snob, with a vibrato like a vampire.)How are you going to torture Alexandar the ghost from the armor wants to know,
you silly maid?
MARIANA
(She changes her voice in this manner too.)- By tickling you till you die out of
laughter.
ALEXANDAR
(Again with his voice in the vampire manner.)- Silly maid, stop this silly game. Or
the knight is going to punish you!
MARIANA
You? knight?? (She is laughing at him.)
ALEXANDAR
(Throws a toy cube at his mothers forehead.)
MARIANA
Auch!
Mariana is beginning to tickle Alexandar. He is laughing and begs her to stop.
ALEXANDAR
(Through laughter.)- Stop it! I can not any more!
MARIANA
Why you cant? Some knight you are!
ALEXANDAR
(Through laughter.)- Stop it Iwill die.
MARIANA
(She stops.)- Beg me!
ALEXANDAR
(Again he is speaking with his vampire intonation.)- Or what?
MARIANA
Or (Again she tickles him. Alexandar laughs. Then she stops.)- Beg!
ALEXANDAR
(In his vampire manner)- I am begging you.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

44

MARIANA
Not like that. I want to hear your polite manner or
ALEXANDAR
(In his vampire manner)- I am begging you precious maid.
MARIANA
Thats better. (She lies on the table and lights a cigarette. Alexandar lies next to her.)
ALEXANDAR
Will you give me a drag?
MARIANA
Of course- what?
ALEXANDAR
(He tries to take Marianas cigarette from her hand.)- Why you dont want to give
me; I am a big knight? Just one.
MARIANA
No stop it.
ALEXANDAR
Why not?
MARIANA
Because you will grow pigs tale. You are a big knight, but your age is not proper.
ALEXANDAR
It is proper, I know it is.
MARIANA
Stop it! Is this what you like? (She blows smoke in Alexandars face. Alexandar
coughs.)- There you have it! Our knight likes certain smells?
ALEXANDAR
Than how come you- the made like smells?
MARIANA
Stop it! Dont be silly. Dont speak like this anymore or
ALEXANDAR
Or?
MARIANA
or when you grow up you will become (In the vampire manner.)- crazy!
ALEXANDAR
How did you find me? Did Rober- the traitor told you where I usually hide?
MARIANA
Absolutely not, this has nothing to do with Rober. I found you myself. You are
leaving signs where you are. Your toys were at the table little boy.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

45

ALEXANDAR
Dont call me like that. I am a knight, as you saw minutes ago. Is it true there were
secret passages through our castle?
MARIANA
Stop it! There are no secret passages. There are no vampires. I have told you
millions of times already.
ALEXANDAR
They were hiding in the walls. I saw them with my own eyes during the war. It is
good the war is over; there are no ghosts in the walls any more. Mum, who won the
war?
MARIANA
We won. Our side won, if that is what you asked me about. But in the war nobody
wins, it is just all stupid.
ALEXANDAR
Why shall they make a war if nobody wants to win?
MARIANA
Because in this world there are many lazy people. They are too lazy to work
anything so they wonder how come they cannot achieve something. But at some
point of their lives they figure out that if there is a war they may steal and get away
with it. That is what happens if the lazy guys can achieve something and have
anything. They create a war, and the other stupid guys like me and you participate.
ALEXANDAR
Mum, why are we stupid?
MARIANA
Because we are not lazy. We always want to do something of our own. We never
make plots or conspiracies or plan how to steal something and get away with it.
ALEXANDAR
People that steal are not stupid mum? Than we should learn to steal too. I dont
want to be stupid.
MARIANA
Calm down. We are not only stupid, we are honest as well.
ALEXANDAR
Do we have anything from honesty?
MARIANA
Well no
ALEXANDAR
On the other hand people that are stealing have a lot from stealing.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

46

MARIANA
Things are not as plain as you are presenting them. Honest people also have
something from honesty. Maybe not the material things such as money, gold etc.
But they do have appreciation from the other people. Like our family has. You see
good people saw that we are honest and they let us become aristocrats. They let us
have this castle. Otherwise they would have thrown us out.
ALEXANDAR
We won because we were on the good side?
MARIANA
Remember this big boy- there is no good side in the war. The war is the worst thing
that can happen to you. You should always run away from it.
ALEXANDAR
How come you ended up in it?
MARIANA
I stopped running for a while I had my children, you. It was too complicated to
run away. I had to participate. You should know we were no goodies at all. If you
want to win in the war you have to hate your enemy. You have to be full with hate.
Did you remember this?
ALEXANDAR
(With his vampire intonation.)- Lesson number 1: If I want to win in the war, I have
to hate my enemy from the bottom of my guts. (He laughs like a vampire.)
MARIANA
Dont laugh! Thrust me this is not funny. Why do you think we were on the good
side?
ALEXANDAR
I figured out myself, I am a clever boy.
MARIANA
Not clever enough to trick me. Somebody told you about this. Who? Rober? Again
you were doing something with him. I told you many times to stay away from him.
Did you stay away from him?
ALEXANDAR
As much as you did. He is here with us after all.
MARIANA
I know that again you have been doing something with him. Once again you lied.
You are not a knight anymore. Immediately tell me what are you up to; Rober told
you we were the goodies in this war?
ALEXANDAR
That is nonsense. How can you know that?

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

47

MARIANA
You sad that Rober knows where you hide. You were playing the hide game with
him too? You betrayed your own mother with that servant.
ALEXANDAR
I didnt betray(With his vampire talk.)- you silly maid. (Continues with his
normal way of speaking.)- I just told him where I hide while he was helping my
homework.
MARIANA
Liar! You sad (Imitating Alexandars way of speaking.)- where I usually hide.
ALEXANDAR
How did you remember this? I cannot believe you figured out this.
MARIANA
Thats it (With her vampire manner.)- I am maid, I have female intuition.
(Continues normally.)- Youll better tell me everything or
ALEXANDAR
(With his vampire manner.)- Or what maid?
MARIANA
No horse riding lessons any more. And well sell your pony; anyway we dont have
enough money to keep him anymore. Did he give you as well a drag from his
cigarette?
ALEXANDAR
Noooo
MARIANA
Wait! is somebody walking in the corridor? Be quiet (She stands up. She tries to
listen.)- I could swear somebody was near us.
ALEXANDAR
Maybe the ghosts. By the way Rober told me about the ghosts in the secret
corridors. Is that what you wanted to find out?
MARIANA
Let me scent your breath. (She comes close towards Alexandars face.)- You have a
dog breath- again you didnt wash your teeth- but you werent smoking, lucky you. If
I catch you smoking I am going to lock you in that armor and keep you there for a
whole week with no food and water!
ALEXANDAR
You were a tough maid.
MARIANA
Did he told you we were on the good side? Do you know why? Because we find out
that he was on the bad.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

48

ALEXANDAR
I wasnt conspiring. He told us that you were on the better side.
MARIANA
When did that happen? Who did he mean at when he said us?
ALEXANDAR
He told me just before Mary was killed.
MARIANA
Then there were you and him and whos us? Tell me.
ALEXANDAR

MARIANA
Big boy I am so serious. Youll better tell me all about this.
ALEXANDAR
In front of Johan and Ana.
MARIANA
Who are Johan and did you say Ana?
ALEXANDAR
My brother and sister.
MARIANA
(She is yelling at Alexandar.)- You have no brothers and sisters! Shit! (She puts her
forefinger at her mouth, showing Alexandar to keep quiet.)- Somebody is walking
around this room! No. I went crazy from this war. Now I am imagining things like
you Alexandar please stop inventing things again, that is not good for you mind.
Many children would have been happy to be the only child. We, your parents can
give all our love to you, we dont have to share it other children. Alexandar, you
should know you are a happy child. (She hugs Alexandar.)- Why do you want to
have brothers and sisters?
ALEXANDAR
Because everybody else has (His mother hugs him stronger.)- Because I am
lonely (His mother kisses him in the forehead.)- Because I need somebody to
compete with and show to you I am better than them.
MARIANA
You dont have to show to me big boy. I know you are the best. You should know
that you are the happiest child in the world. All this property, the castle is just for
you; you are the king in this castle.
ALEXANDAR
It is not just me. Vampires are on my side. With them I will beat the rest.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

49

MARIANA
Junior you dont have to fight for anything- you already have. Did you invent the
vampires by your own or Rober assisted you for this too, like he did for your
homework?
ALEXANDAR
Well He told me that these sounds are from the ghosts that hide in the secret
passages. You too just though you heard something. Maybe Rober is right; there are
vampires in this castle?
MARIANA
That what I heard were not the vampires; vampires dont come during the day. I
mean: If vampires existed they would have come here during the night. But
vampires do not exist. Did you remember this?
ALEXANDAR
I did mom. (He hugs his mother.)
MARIANA
You will never do anything with Rober! Is this understood big boy? He was a traitor,
a spy. Did you remember when I told you that we are suspecting that he is giving
information to the other side?
ALEXANDAR
Yes I remember. You are the best mom in the world. (He kisses his mother in the
mouth.)
MARIANA
Well did Rober tech you this? Why on earth did you want to do something with
Rober? He is our servant.
ALEXANDAR
Because I am so bored here all alone. Because he is telling me interesting things,
about travels in the seas, boats, fights with monsters, travels in the space. He
makes me feel alive, speaking with me like a grown up person, about ghosts and
vampires. Communicating in front of me with them.
MARIANA
Junior I just told you- there are no vampires in this world.
ALEXANDAR
But I saw with my own two eyes. You sad there were no secret corridors here but
there are. He would just knock three times on the wall and the vampires would
start to move. I heard their steps many times.
MARIANA
(She un-hugs with Alexandar and continues to speak in a very serious manner.)- Is
this truth? Look straight in my eyes, and tell me this is not some of your
phantasies.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

50

ALEXANDAR
No. (He approaches the wall near the armor and knocks 3+2 times on its surface.)He knocked like this on this place and the vampires begun to walk behind the walls.
I could hear their steps.
MARIANA
Why did he tell you that?
ALEXANDAR
He wanted something in return. A favor.
MARIANA
What favor? Tell me!
ALEXANDAR
(With his vampire manner.)- You dont have to know everything about
the knight maid?
MARIANA
(She slaps Alexandar at his cheek.)- Tell me immediately junior. I am serious as
hell.
ALEXANDAR
(He begins to cry.)- Because my bedroom is close to yours he wanted to know
whether I could hear what you were speaking before you went to sleep.
MARIANA
(She is yelling at her son.)- He wanted to find out whether you can hear us at all or
something in particular.
ALEXANDAR
Who from the villagers helped you in particular to transport the arms in Vettan?
MARIANA
I see. So he was a traitor after all.
ALEXANDAR
Didnt you say you knew already?
MARIANA
We doubted but now we definitely know.
ALEXANDAR
But you lied to me. Didnt you say - real maid never lies?
MARIANA
Well I am a maid but I am a woman as well. I have my tricks, my intuition and my
enquiry as well.
ALEXANDAR
Do you plan to throw him out? I dont want you to throw out Rober.
MARIANA
Why?

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

51

ALEXANDAR
Because I dont want to be all alone like I used to be.
MARIANA
I am afraid I will have to leave you exactly like that
We can hear somebody is moving in the corridor - exit of this room from the right
side.
MARIANA
Did you hear that? No? You are deaf or something? Listen to me now, little king,
you should keep in mind that in this life you are going to have no friends. Friends is
an non-existing category for stupid children taught by their imbecile teachers. All
those that have told you that they want to become your friends are liars and want to
gain something from you. They all want to steal something that is yours. They
wanted to be your friends because they wanted to steal everything from you and get
away with it. If they sense they can get away with it undoubtedly they are going to
kill you too. So dear king, welcome to loneliness, our one and only friend. Are you
sure you didnt hear anything? Somebody is moving around us, that can be
dangerous, do you understand that? If I found out that you were lying to me about
something I will become very angry at you till the rest of my life. Did you
remember all this? Now I am leaving you all alone as you are going to stay till the
rest of your life. All alone and all happy (She nods with her eye to Alexandar and
exits at the exit on the right side. She closes the door.)
Alexandar approaches the window. He watches the landscape.
ALEXANDAR
(He speaks for himself.)- No vampires today
Alexandar goes to the table. Gathers his cube toys and creates with them a little
house on the surface of the table. He hears the same sound coming from the exit of
the room as the one his mother (the last time) mentioned about it to him. He goes to
the door. He opens it and screams as being scared; behind the door stands Rober.
ROBER
So you did hear me before while! You wanted to keep our friendship.
ALEXANDAR
You mean our partnership. Remember who I am.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

52

ROBER
Oh yes You are our little king. So your highness- why we cannot be friends?
ALEXANDAR
I have just told you, because I am a little king. And because of many other things.
Actually you should be the one telling me we cannot be something we cannot be.
First, you are too old for somebody of my age. Second, you are my mentor; that
would be a kind of conflict of interest. You see you are paid from my parents for
other things, and you do something you shouldnt
ROBER
All right- I do many things I shouldnt because of my age disadvantage- as you have
just told me. Why is your highness so cold with me today? Because of the talk you
had with your mother? Dont trust your mother. Dont trust women. (He takes
Alexander in his arms and sits him on the table.)- We are so good with each other.
We dont really need somebody else.
ALEXANDAR
Maybe not you. However I do need somebody; we all do, at my age.
ROBER
(He sensually fixes the hair from Alexandars forehead.)- I always forget about your
age. Sorry about that. Wouldnt it be great if all of us men could be together?
ALEXANDAR
Together for what?
ROBER
For you the rex. So that we can enjoy every moment from this precious landscape.
ALEXANDAR
But we cannot enjoy because we cannot be together. Sooner or later we all want to
take advantage of each other.
ROBER
Thats silly. We dont hurt each other because we need each other, for mutual
pleasure. (He moves his head closer towards Alexandars head with intention to kiss
him in his mouth. Alexandar turns his head aside.)- Why not?
ALEXANDAR
Because that is bad for me. I will feel dizzy all the time when I grow up.
ROBER
You used to like this. May I know why?
ALEXANDAR
Because I felt so un-boring. I felt special, different, and at the same time like
everybody else. That is so beautiful. Everybody must like it, I thought.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

53

ROBER
You are special. You are the rex. Yet it is so common for your kind. All kings are
like this. (He tries to kiss Alexandar in his mouth, with his eyes closed.)
ALEXANDAR
(He places one of his cubes in Robers mouth.)
ROBER
(He demolishes the house from the cubes. He spits the cube. He lights a cigarette and
offer a drag to Alexandar.)
Alexandar refuses the drag. Puts his hand in Robers pocket (the pocket of Robers
livery) and pulls out the cigarette box. He lights himself a cigarette.
ROBER
Oh now you have just became us a smoker. Why do you smoke from mine?
Why do you waste my cigarettes, cant you buy something by yourself? I am a poor
servant, dont you feel sorry for me? If I want to earn the amount of one month
salary of your parents I will have to live and work 200years. You are a selfish, rich
kid; all of you rich guys are like this.
ALEXANDAR
You are doing me a favor- like that you should take it. I am too young. Oldies let me
not smoke. When I grow up I will remember this and reinstate the favor.
ROBER
You are learning fast. You had an extraordinary teacher.
Rober and Alexandar touch their fists in a conspiratorial manner.
ALEXANDAR
By the way didnt you say you were going to make some money for hiding those that
were on the other side in my castle? Did they pay you?
ROBER
You said you were too young. This castle is still not yours They didnt pay me,
because I was helping the side that lost. But shhhhh about this we are preparing
another surprise. Nobody knows about me. It is good that you have me near you. At
any moment the situation can change and you will need somebody from the other
side. You should learn how to have all the time somebody that is from the both
sides. The richest people in the world have always the both sides. They are Swiss.
You should learn how to be neutral.
ALEXANDAR
But that is not honest.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

54

ROBER
Than tell me what is honest in this world? To starve and wait all the time, like
stupid Europeans do. We are the most honest people because we are sincere; we just
want to make more money.
ALEXANDAR
If your people were honest than how come they didnt pay you?
ROBER
They caught them They shoot them Anyway you are right; they are not very
honest too. Like everybody else. I know that your parents too were shifting between
the both sides too.
ALEXANDAR
That is not truth. At least that is not what I heard of. Anyway, I saw with my own
eyes that at the very beginning they joined the goodies as you had told us me. I
doubt that my parents could lie to me.
ROBER
But you can lie to them You lied to your mother about what we did together. I just
heard that minutes ago, standing here behind this door. Obviously you all dont look
as one of a kind. Somebody that finds out about this may tell you that you dont
behave as a real aristocrat.
ALEXANDAR
Nobody will find out about this because only you know. Even if he does they can
accuse me nothing; I am still adolescent. Besides I dont really care what others
think of me; this is what makes me real aristocrat.
ROBER
(His voice becomes surprisingly sensual.)- You are right. I am shit-bag filled with
complexes. I always think about what I dont have and what others have. That is
why I wanted to have you, my lord. (He tries to hug Alexandar.)
ALEXANDAR
No stop it. I told you I dont want this anymore.
ROBER
This? (He kisses ones Alexandar in his forehead.)
ALEXANDAR
That you may do as much as you like. Those other things please- not!
ROBER
Why not?
ALEXANDAR
That is not nice. I am still a small boy. What if somebody finds out? Do you realize
they may place you in jail for that?

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

55

ROBER
I dont care if they do. (He tries to hug Alexandar.)- I love you my lord. I want to
have you. I dont want to lose you, share you with others. I want you to be mine,
mine I will do everything to keep Open your mouth!
ALEXANDAR
I dont want to!
ROBER
Why not?
ALEXANDAR
You have dog breath!
ROBER
Oh my lord. You are so fond of me too, not only me of you. I listened how you did
everything to protect me. You didnt say about the corridors, that we hided weapons
for the other side, and our wounded friends
ALEXANDAR
By the way what happened with Anjeska, the wounded woman with the little baby?
ROBER
She She run away in another country. You are so faithful to us mu lord. I love
you!
ALEXANDAR
You love me? Then why did you cheat me that there were corridors with vampires?
There are no secret corridors. You were hiding them in the other rooms. Vampires
exist not. You presented your secretive bunch of fraudsters as vampires to me!
ROBER
(He slaps Alexandar tenderly at his cheek.)- Dont call like that our companions! You
cannot imagine what they have been through.
ALEXANDAR
You have just hit me!
ROBER
Sorry I am sorry That was a love slap. I love you so much my lord, I cannot
control myself anymore. Let me see (He takes Alexandars face in his hands and
examines it.)- I didnt hit you, I just touched you face. I dont want to see that you
lose the right way; stay with us and everything will be good for you. Here (He
kisses Alexandar at his cheek, than in his mouth.)
ALEXANDAR
(With his vampire intonation.)- This was the right way according to Rober. (He
continues with his ordinary way of talking.)- You were with them? Didnt you say it
was the best to be with both sides?

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

56

ROBER
Not if the other side doesnt want you. They dont want me, lets face it. I am too
poor for them.
ALEXANDAR
So you didnt choose the other side. You had to be with them.
ROBER
Whatever you say my lord. (He starts to shake and cry.)- You cannot imagine my
lord how miserable my life is. I cannot afford even a beer in the pub. Thats why I
have no friends. All my life passes just waiting for the dawn to arrive.
ALEXANDAR
Dont cry. Come here. (He hugs Rober and kisses him in his forehead.)- I will give
you some books to read. They give meaning of our lives.
Rober tries to kiss Alexandar in his mouth. Alexandar rejects him. Rober lays
Alexandar on his back (because all the time Alexandar was sitting on the table).
Rober tries to kiss and hug with him. Alexandar tries to resist, yells, Rober closes his
mouth. Rober rips parts of Alexandars clothes.
ALEXANDAR
Stop! Somebody may see us. They will notice my clothes are...
Rober closes Alexandars mouth. They continue to wrestle. The armor at the left side
of the room moves. A door together with it is opening. A ghost in a dirty-gray to black
sheet exits from it. After 2seconds Alexandar can see it, but not Rober- because he is
turned with his back towards him.
ALEXANDAR
Thank you Rober
ROBER
So you like this after all
ALEXANDAR
No- for telling me about the ghosts. One is behind you.
ROBER
Together with Johan and Ana? I did lie you about that- ghosts do not exist; but not
about anything else, my love
ALEXANDAR
And they are not exactly as they say they were. They say they were in white sheets,
but they are in dark ones.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

57

ROBER
Than pay no attention to it. Pay attention to my body
THE GHOST
(His voice is intentionally extra-vibrated by its speaker and darkened by the sheet. He puts
one of his hands in horizontal position and touches Robers back.)- Pay attention to this!

Gat ya!
ROBER
Is that a gun?

THE GHOST
Is that corpse with the baby in the corridor that of Anjeska- your companion you just spoke
of? Ghosts dont like dead women or dead babies.

ROBER
We told her it is dangerous with us. She wanted to run away from her alcoholic husband.

THE GHOST
So you have let her die in our corridor.
Rober tries to reach the ghosts hand, but the ghosts revolves the gun (that he had in his
hand) and moves it at Robers backhead. Rober stands as frozen with his hands up.

ROBER
Who are you?

THE GHOST
Somebody that now hates you so much that wants to kill you. Close your eyes and ears
junior.

ALEXANDAR
(He closes his eyes and puts fingers in his ears.)

THE GHOST
Can you hear me now?

ALEXANDAR
(He is shaking from fear. He says yes with a vertical movement of his head.)

THE GHOST
Move aside!

ALEXANDAR
(By moving his bottom - while sitting on the table, and while his eyes are closed and his
fingers in his ears - he is moving on the right side where the table ends.)

THE GHOST
Stop! Not in that direction, youll fall; try the other way.

ALEXANDAR
(He moves the same way in the other direction.)

THE GHOST
Say your prayer lover-boy!

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

58

ROBER
(His voice shakes out of fear.)- OK. Our father
The Ghost shoots the gun in Robers head. Rober falls dead on the table.

THE GHOST
Sorry about that. I am a buzzy woman. I have no time for waiting.
The ghost undresses the sheet. Mariana appears. She moves carefully so that no blood stains
can be made on her cocktail dress; she changed from her last appearance. She places Robers
corpse in the sheet (that she lied on the ground) and wraps him in it. Then she is pulling the
corpse in the corridor behind the armor.

ALEXANDAR
(While Mariana is pulling Robers corpse.)- May I open my eyes and ears.

MARIANA
Oh yes. Of course.
ALEXANDAR
I knew it was you.
MARIANA
How did you know?
ALEXANDAR
From the smell of your perfume.

MARIANA
Right. Tonight we have a very important party.
ALEXANDAR
Is that Marys raincoat? It goes well with your dress.

MARIANA
On no. It doesnt. This raincoat is a rag, my dress is exquisite.
ALEXANDAR
That means your dress should be a rag?

MARIANA
No that means my coat should be elegant. (She is turning 180% in front of Alexandar like a
model on a cat-walk.)- Do I have anywhere stains, from the blood or
ALEXANDAR
No, you look perfect.

MARIANA
OK than (She closes the door with the armor, after the body of Rober is inside the corridor.
She goes near Alexandar, she kneels in front of him so that she can be at his eyelevel, because
he is still sitting on the table.)- Nobody should find out about this. Nobody! Not even daddy.

He is a man. He has weak nerves. Did you remember this?

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

59

ALEXANDAR

(He starts crying.)

MARIANA
(She is wiping Alexandras tears with her hands.)- Dont cry now. When you grow up
you will understand how wright was what I just did. Even daddy should not find out
about this. Did you understand? He is a man; men have week nerves. Sometimes he
will get drunk and he will tell. I am not a man. You have me. What am I?
ALEXANDAR

(Still crying.)- A busy woman.

MARIANA
Stop crying. You are a big boy Alexandar.
ALEXANDAR

What will happen with Rober Mariana?

MARIANA
I am going to leave him rot there with that little girl and her baby that he killed.
And then I will collect the bones and throw them away. Dont feel sorry for him.
You cannot imagine how disgusting that was what he wanted to do with you.
ALEXANDAR

He was my friend.
MARIANA
He wasnt your friend! He wanted to make money by killing you!
ALEXANDAR

Why dont I have any friends? Everybody else does.

MARIANA
Trust me everybody else is just like you. They all lie. Doesnt that seem peculiar to
you? They all have friends, but you are not one of them. It is because you are richer
than them, they envy you. That is the only way for them how they can make you
feel bad. (She stands up; from her purse she takes out a cigarette box and a match.
She lights up a cigarette.)- They are all friendless. A bunch of senseless animals,
predators; as soon as you understand this the better it will be for you.
ALEXANDAR

How come you are always surrounded by friends?

MARIANA
They are not my friends; they are my girlfriends. We are exchanging recipes for
cakes.
ALEXANDAR

I have never seen you cook; always somebody else does that for you. Besides most of
your friends are men.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

60

MARIANA
They are not my friends! They need me for something; I didnt say I dont need them
for something. I have to take care of myself; we all depend on each other. That is the
way things go in this world. We need each other in order to survive.
ALEXANDAR

You dont need from them love like I do?

MARIANA
They dont love me and I dont love them. Because I am aware that when the first
opportunity shows they are going to do this (She throws her cigarette on the floor
and squeezes it with her shoe.)- to me. Too bad for me I am not just a cigarette.
ALEXANDAR

But when you need love, where do you go? Who do you ask for love?
MARIANA
You of course. (She kisses Alexandar in his mouth.)- I didnt know you like to kiss so
much. Otherwise forget love. Love is bad. Love is drug. First you are becoming
dependent from it, and then it deludes you. (She opens up her purse and takes out
an injection, small paper bag, spoon and a match. She puts her leg on the table; we
can see her silver stocking. She unwraps the belt covered with diamonds from her
dress and wraps it around her leg.)
ALEXANDAR

(While she is preparing and injecting the drug.)- Mum why are you using that
medicine again? Do you have a headache again?
MARIANA
Again you were sleeping at the drama lessons! Dont use present continuous in this
case! I am not using it, I use it now. Because we have important party tonight, I
have to look perfect. They will make important decisions for our future, so I have to
make the best impression.
ALEXANDAR

You always look perfect.

MARIANA
That is what you think. Old people are not as clean and as pure as you are. They
want to see what you dont want to see. They will sense that you are somehow not
OK and they will ruin you. Oh this is so gorgeous (She lazes at her back on the
table.)
ALEXANDAR

(Alexandar lies next to her.)- What is gorgeous?

MARIANA
This music.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

61

In off we begin to hear the music from the first scene, which is now echoed.
ALEXANDAR

There is no music mum.

MARIANA
There is. You cannot hear it. I can.
ALEXANDAR

What kind of music do you hear?

MARIANA
From the time after my time. The music of our descendants. That means we are
going to live forever.
ALEXANDAR

Why dont you give some of that medicine to me? I would like to try.
MARIANA
You will try it Alexandar. When you grow up. Like smoking this is a dangerous
thing for your age. Dont speak. Let me fully enjoy this.
ALEXANDAR

You dont want to enjoy with me?

MARIANA
Of course I want but not now. This is too mature for somebody of your age.
ALEXANDAR

I want to enjoy with you forever mum. I love you.

MARIANA
I love you too. (She hugs Alexandar.)
ALEXANDAR

And what do you see?

Through the window we can see the sun moving/setting down. The sky fills out with
stars; the moon appears too.
MARIANA
The sun because I feel like I am on the beach. It is too bright. Could you please close
the curtain junior? This sun light is hurting my eyes.
ALEXANDAR

There is no sunlight mum, the sun just set down. It is early evening.
Mariana hugs Alexandar; he hugs her too.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

62

MARIANA
Oh my God, Ill better put some make up. The guests will arrive soon.
ALEXANDAR

Nobody has arrived yet mum. I will hear for you because you are listening to that
music.
MARIANA
Why did you tell me about the guests? You wanted to tell me that I am unable to
take care of myself.
ALEXANDAR

No, because I want to stay with you here as long as possible. You have just shown
me you can care about me perfectly well. I love you mum.
Alexandar and Mariana hug stronger. Alexandar closes his eyes and obviously falls
asleep. Clouds pass over the moon. The set becomes slowly completely dark.
Scene 5
This set is again the office of Alexandar from scene 1.
While the light shows on the set we hear in off the slow appearance of the same music
from the scene1, echoed, but when the set is fully lightened the echo that was
disappearing slowly, bit by bit, is now completely gone. The record with it is playing
on the gramophone. The scene is not as well lightened as in the first scene because in
this Alexanadar is projecting slides to Janko. Alexandar stands in front of the screen
on which when the set appears there is one villa which is completely made out of
concrete, with massive walls. Alexandar holds a conducting stick in his hand.
ALEXANDAR

Did you eat any food today?

JANKO
I did- if you call that what they give us in the orphanage food.
ALEXANDAR

What do you like? I may give you anything you like. I have to keep you healthy so
that you can listen to my lectures.
JANKO
You dont have to prevent me from starving if I dont listen to your lectures?
ALEXANDAR

You want to say I am not human enough? Or that I am not good at all?

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

63

JANKO
I didnt want to be opinionated; it is just that what you are saying, according to my
humble opinion, has no sense.
ALEXANDAR

Why shall I care about you if I dont know who you are?
JANKO
I guess that is what people do- unlike animals, they care about each other.
ALEXANDAR

I cannot imagine anybody could survive in this world if he spends so much time
carrying about other people.
JANKO
(He imitates the professors way of talking.)- One must not care only about himself
as long as he wants to remain civilized. ( He continues to talk in his ordinary
manner.)- That is from the lessons we took.
ALEXANDAR

You learned a lot although you hate the education system. It makes you feel a
second rated citizen doesnt it? If you hate the orphanage you hate the system
JANKO
I hate the orphanage. I didnt say I hate the system. I dont hate the system in
general. It depends in what kind of system we live in. Our, yes I hate. But some
countries indeed achieved tremendous achievements with their system. With the
development of arts and sciences. The human kind has its nature, but not only
nature. People unlike animals are civilized. They tend to care about each other and
they have to care about the Mother Nature.
ALEXANDAR

I think I should give you a friendly advice that you should stay as far from
civilization as possible. That is a trap. People are a trap. They all want to enslave
you, so that when you are in trouble they could laugh at you viciously.
JANKO
(He laughs.)- Wow, this sounds like an antique tragedy.
ALEXANDAR

Dont laugh. Life is only and nothing but a tragedy. People are evil and nothing else
but evil. They always dream to see criminals and traitors get the best, and honest
people the worst.
JANKO
You made me laugh. Your talks are good for the temper. Anyway you seem as a
successful person. You must have had somebody to help you.
ALEXANDAR

Trust me, everything I achieved I did because I was completely alone.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

64

JANKO
You must have had fans. You are so popular. I doubt that you could become a
success story if you had no admirers. You had fans- you had people. Score 1:0 for
me. You own me a fancy dinner.
ALEXANDAR

I had absolutely nobody, nor any fans; at least not what you think fans are. They
were all with me because they had to or because it was in their interest.
Theoreticians wrote about me so that they can publish their work, receive their
salary and feed their children with it. The establishment bought my projects
because at that time it was good for their PR to show that they had good taste in
modern architecture
JANKO
But had not any knowledge of history of art. If they had they would have realized
that your projects are plagiarism. They paid for something that was stolen.
ALEXANDAR

All big minds were stealing. Do you think anybody ever invented something of his
own? Spend hundreds of hours in his office, in his lab?
JANKO
Maybe they were all like you, a bunch of criminals. But still to God are dear people
that did everything on their own.
ALEXANDAR

God? What is that?

JANKO
You mentioned the theoreticians and that they care about their children. Everybody
does- so 2:0 for me; all people have other people.
ALEXANDAR

All animals have other animals too, their cubs. But if they are hungry, parents can
eat their children. People are so too. That is nature. Only nature exists, not God.
Actually you dont realize yet but the two of us are one of a kind. It is good for us
when we trust the Mother Nature. Only she never lies us.
JANKO
She does in a way. We have our senses from her. When you see your house from a
distance you think it has become smaller- 3:0 for me. The same with the gender: If I
put some female clothes you may think I am a woman. Yet only my clothes were
female. We have to believe we can trust each other- that is the only way we can
trust anything.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

65

ALEXANDAR

I know what you think of me- that I am one of the rare people you cannot trust at
all. But you are wrong which is due to your age. Later you will discover that we
were all with misgivings.
JANKO
Than this means we are not under her highness- the nature. Nature is responsible
for our aging, and here you are emphasizing our consciousness. The animals unlike
people, are not aware of their age.
ALEXANDAR

How about the elephant graves in Africa?

JANKO
Stop it. You know what I mean - animals dont have that notion to care about each
other (when they are older or in trouble) like people do.
ALEXANDAR

That is not true. The dolphin which is not a fish, if he cannot swim, is supported by
other dolphins on the surface of the see so that he wont drown. Again that is from
nature. They sent that they have to help him, because they may need the same.
JANKO
So why is your house like this? (He looks at the slide projection.)- It looks as you are
trying to distant people from it. The walls are so massive. To be honest I have an
impression nobody could like to live in it. No human. Maybe this is for some of your
animals, some kind of zoo?
ALEXANDAR

You dont know who paid for it. A guy whose one month salary is so high that you
will have to live and work 200years to earn it.
JANKO
I dont work anything and I dont earn. I am too young. Regrettably in countries like
ours many people work all their life time without earning anything. Maybe indeed
they all dont need anything. And they all dont speak about it. (He laughs.)- I guess
it is because they are so stupid. I agree with you about this. It is important that we
make a lot of money, so that we wont end up with the animals. That is why I
wanted to do this with you. So that I we could have a brighter future. Could you
please give me once again some of that whisky? I wont tell you did.
ALEXANDAR

(While putting whisky and ice in two glasses.)- You should be aware that I heard
that they record everything we speak here. So take care. (He gives the glass to
Janko, they hit the glasses- chin-chin, and they both drink.)
JANKO
Where did you hear about this?

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

66

ALEXANDAR

While I was still abroad; as you would put it- while in the civilized world. They said
that all of these countries from the Eastern bloc had installed this bugging
equipment.
JANKO
I see, by that they wanted to say that they cared about their citizens unlike the
Western World. That is why anybody ever came to save me.
ALEXANDAR

Do you think they do that because they are philanthropists? They want to sell your
privacy. You see that people dont care about each other! Score- 3:1. (He hits Jankos
glass and drinks.)
JANKO
I didnt say all of them do. They tend to. How can anybody make any money
from this provincial talks?
ALEXANDAR

Trust me, they all make a fortune out of this. Many people recognized their life
stories in soap operas. Wasnt it strange to you that somebody can write so much
and everything fresh n new every day? Somebody can make a biological experiment
with us and discover a medicine that can sell for an amazing price. Everybody sells
our privacy; you may trust me about this. Even the bishops.
JANKO
You are well informed. Thank you for sharing this information with me.
ALEXANDAR

Thank you- is that everything you have to tell me? You know how I wont you to
thank me. (He places his hand at Jankos knee.)
JANKO
(Takes away his leg from Alaxandars touch.)- Stop that. You said they are recording
all this.
ALEXANDAR

Oh I disappointed you with my stupid house that is why you are like this with me. I
noticed though that each time we see each other you let me come closer to you to
your body. You are so gorgeous, like an ancient temple, like Parthenon. Your body
contains only human dignity and nothing else but dignity. Oh you are so
handsome (He glides his hand through Jankos hair.)- I didnt know an old man
like me could be ever happy again; you made it happen.
Alexandar tries to kiss Janko in his mouth. Janko puts the glass with whiskey in his
mouth and sings something with the glass in his mouth.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

67

ALEXANDAR

(As he almost begins to cry.)- You are making fun of me? You dont respect me! I will
tell to those SS babes to throw you out of my life!
JANKO
Relax. You sad it: You just disappointed me with your house.
ALEXANDAR

I dont believe you. How can a house seem so disappointing; that you want to laugh
at an old man like me?
JANKO
If you dont mind- it looks like a tomb. It looks it was designed rather by somebody
that despises human life (and adores death), than by somebody that respects it. And
all day you are telling me that you believe in human life, in its longevity. You
offended me. You are telling me lies obviously.
ALEXANDAR

(With a relief.)- Oh is that what it was about? I am such a senile old man. (He is
kissing Janko in his hair.)- That is truth what you just said. Human kind has
developed certain hypocrisy. They all say they are for the prolonging of the human
life, yet they are all against it. I will repeat this- civilization is a bad thing, since it
is all about using peoples trust. In the old testimony it says people were living 140
years and they told us they didnt know how to count the time. But the latest
researches show they were really living this long, since they didnt have racial
prejudice. They were all mixing with all races. The genetics of the ancient people
was very strong. From the moment they stopped to mix, our genetics begun to
stagnate and retrogress. So as time goes by people live shorter and shorter.
JANKO
Is that how it was? Now you are not only an architect, but an archeologists? genetic
engineer??
Alexandar tries to hug with Janko. Janko rejects him.
ALEXANDAR

Yes, yes our civilization is completely based on the Bible yet it is wrongly
translated. As you know in our language we didnt have a different word for gender
till very recent. Usually languages tend to escapade the shameful terms in their
language. So we had the same word for sex and gender. The same with ancient
Hebru, where as in many European languages, for gender and relation they have
one word. So one king that wanted to maintain on the throne (he could do that only
by marrying his cousin) ordered this translation. Thats why instead of who will go

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

68

to bed with a person from the same relation, it says the same gender. But our
civilization is ignoring these scientific facts.
JANKO
It is good that the civilization is ignoring people like you. Self-indulged plagiarists
that think they know everything. Yet they are unable to project a normal house.
ALEXANDAR

Yes. My dear child. You are right. It is incredibly difficult for one to create an
authentic project. Have you read the play Mozart and Salieri? We are all average,
we envy the talent. You have the talent! You know nothing of history of art yet you
noticed this house is like a tomb. Janko you are our miracle. We should all admire
you; you are genius. I was really inspired by a roman mausoleum. Nobody, even the
largest theoreticians ever told me about this.
JANKO
I ( as everybody else ) dont need to be a genius to begin to think that this
house looks like a tomb. Because all the tombs look the same. As all spoiled people
you are beginning to see things that dont exist, but you insist on them, and they
become truth. As your complexes are disappearing lies around people like you are
becoming truth. Thrust me, I dont know what you have imagined in your head but I
will never go in the same bed with you, particularly not in some kind of a tomb.
Because you smell. You smell like a rotten, old man- on urine, on the nastiest
things in this world. And you are ugly as shit! I dont care if you throw me from your
project named: Fag by all means. I am adapting myself to you, you should adopt
to me.
ALEXANDAR

(He throws the glass. The glass brakes. He is yelling with anger.)- You are still
unaware what may happen to you because of this! Youll goanna regret this words!
You will remember this evening! Nobody ever insulted me like this! You cannot
imagine what I may do to you!
JANKO
Well fuck of, you old shit!
ALEXANDAR

(He sits with tiredness the couch. He looks for a while at the slide projection.)- We
drink too much. That is why this happening.
JANKO
You know the saying: The drunken head says what the sober hides?
ALEXANDAR

Oh now you have the proverbs. Do you know: Dont say to the bear her breath
smells, she will eat you?

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

69

JANKO
I have the proverbs, but not only now.
ALEXANDAR

How will you respond me- if I was the bear?

JANKO
It is not gold everything that glitters.
ALEXANDAR

But then I would tell you: The stooped head cannot be decapitated.
JANKO
I will answer you like a poet: Raised head is so high that no sward may reach it. Gat
ya!
Alexandrar and Janko touch the ends of each others fists like schoolboys in a
conspiratorial manner.
ALEXANDAR

Let me show you another slide. This really goes to my nerves.

JANKO
By the way why did you choose to be influenced by a mausoleum?
ALEXANDAR

Because that is a normal tendency. Around the villa is a wild forest. Dangerous
animals or bandits may enter, so I wanted to make a villa with big walls. I was
always inspired by the massive ancient roman architecture. However today they
despise this tendency. They say that is too massive, not elegant. They have no sense
of esthetics, just functionality. I think it is normal for somebody to want to be
functional, if that one is in danger.
JANKO
Who wanted to pay so much money to live in ugly woods like this, in the middle of
nowhere?
ALEXANDAR

(By his body talk we can see he hesitates to answer this question.)- As I have told
you, you are still too young, you cannot fully understand these things. Remember
this: All people are refugees. They all spread the civil war around them and then
they need to run away from it. This is one of those sanctuaries. You can see that
everything about this place is about reduction and antiseptic existing. As nothing
organic can survive in this environment, only the plants.
JANKO
Now I am beginning to understand about you- how come you made such a career.
You understood well your clients.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

70

ALEXANDAR

I had to.
JANKO
So you are another success story. You were very poor. You were afraid from poverty
like me and you decided to do everything to stay out of it.
ALEXANDAR

I had to be successful for other reason. Havent you read my biography? I was
always rich. I didnt want to disappoint that great woman- my mother. She was my
saint.
JANKO
I didnt know you had such a high attitude towards women too?
ALEXANDAR

Everybody has the best opinion for his own mother. Thats normal, thats natural.
JANKO
Not if you dont have one.
Alexandar and Janko watch each other few seconds with an unpleasant sent of guilt
in their eyes.
ALEXANDAR

(Reaches the slide projector and shows another slide. It looks as a tower.)- I believe
you will change your opinion of me after this.
JANKO
To be honest for me this tower is just like any other.
ALEXANDAR

Take a better look.

JANKO
It is round, and it is completely covered with glass unlike other towers that have
windows.
ALEXANDAR

Right- this is not a tower for living, this is a tower for science.
JANKO
(With anger.)- If you are trying again to involve me in some of your experiments I
am telling you in the most opened and honest manner- it is not going to happen.
ALEXANDAR

In that case why shall we do this at all? Of course everything that is connected with
science is somehow a little experimental and risky. You were aware of that.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

71

JANKO
I said I will agree to do everything that is about science, art and technology and
everything that is by the law and nothing that is out of the law.
ALEXANDAR

Calm down- this is completely legal. This is the building of the National Institute
for Molecular Researches in Averdine.
JANKO
I have never heard of the institute and I have never heard of the place. (Imitating
Alexandars way of speaking.)- That is because I am too young, I still have to learn a
lot.
ALEXANDAR

You will learn. You have a good mentor. Me.

JANKO
(He laughs frenetically.)
ALEXANDAR

I have shown you this tower so that you can see that I really admire inspiration and
spontaneity. You see this photo is made in dusk (or perhaps sunrise). Through the
windows we can see the structure, the shape of the building. This building is like a
woman in a sateen evening gown. She is not naked, but through the sateen we can
feel the shape of her body. That is what excites us. She is not naked; she is
seductive. Thats why this woman/tower is not cheap at all.
JANKO
How do we now this is posh? Just by being dressed with tastefulness does not prove
one has a lot of stile. As you said- one can steal somebodies ideas and present them
as his. We dont know how authentic this is. You have many stains in your career so
we have justified doubts that this design may not be yours at all.
ALEXANDAR

My colleagues, designers will tell me about this. Not you, the amateur. You were
unable even to notice that the sun was going through the windows, revealing the
shape of the interior as the dress reveals the womans body.
JANKO
Now I should be sore at you. Before a while you told me that I am genius because I
sensed that tomb, and now you are telling me I am amateur.
ALEXANDAR

For me it is completely incredible that somebody cannot see what I see. Only the
polluted minds cannot see this shape. This is the most authentic design in the
world. I was thinking of my mother, that great, heroic woman all the time while I
was conceiving this design; how she will tell me that I was on my right way. That

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

72

this is the design that will make people that inhabit it feel big, not the people to feel
the design as massive
JANKO
Nonetheless this is not a living place. The people that are sometimes inside the
building are working there, they are not living there. They are not its habitants.
This is a working place, not a space for living. The way you are explaining this to
me shows what kind of man you were. You were always thinking on working, never
of just a plain, happy living.
ALEXANDAR

(With maximum anger.)- That is untrue. I was having the happiest time of my life
with my mother, together with my sister and my brother, with my whole family.
JANKO
Why didnt you mention your father? It seems he was a nice man too, rich, well
educated. Now I remember I have read about him in our school library.
ALEXANDAR

I dont remember him that well. He was always occupied with his work; he had no
time for us, the children. I couldnt say he was a bad parent -he never drunk, he was
never violent- but for me he wasnt like my mother.
JANKO
And your brother and sister; why did you mention them sporadically?
ALEXANDAR

Ana and Johan- they were great family for me, I had all my love for them too.
Though they werent on my level.
JANKO
They are not on your level- that is why they are sporadic to you.
ALEXANDAR

Well I was a competitive child. My mother encouraged me in that. She told me I was
the best from all three children she had. If your mother is with you for that, than
that is OK.
JANKO
It is very important for you everybody to tell you were the best. Because your
mother told you so. You are a unique persona.
ALEXANDAR

I am not unique; unlike all the rest I am sincere. I know that most of my colleagues
are like me.
JANKO
Again you speak about your colleagues. You are always turning the conversation at
your workplace, not at your living place. I guess you wouldnt like to talk about your

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

73

children and your wife, and how they inspired your work? That would be a painful
moment for you.
ALEXANDAR

(It looks as he is going to start to cry.)

JANKO
Why you seem kind of sad now? What happened to your mask? You are forgetting
that whatever happens to you nobody in this world would feel sorry for you. You
collaborated with many dictators and inhumane regimes, like ours. You supported
the worst in our civilization, so that you could realize your selfish projects. Are you
aware that no project is as worth as human life?
ALEXANDAR
I am not aware. I never had life. I never had people. I am not human.
JANKO
You are God? If you are the king you are human too.
ALEXANADAR
Human are delusional, gods are real. Ideas are real. Ideas are perfect unlike people.
JANKO
Human are not perfect. We- the people need so many things. Do you ever need
something?
ALEXANADAR
No I dont.
ALEXANADAR
Why?
ALEXANADAR
Because I am perfect. I am the idea. I am not human.
JANKO
Why did you become so selfish?
ALEXANADAR
I wanted she to tell me I am the best, I am the perfect, I am the idea. My mother.
The saint.
JANKO
Why did you wanted confirmation from your mother for that? Parents love their
children (if they love at all) no matter how perfect or imperfect they became?
ALEXANADAR
I was unaware of that than. Then I thought she will love me only if I am perfect.
JANKO
That is good Alexandar. You were human after all. You needed love. (He lets
Alexandar hug him.)- Love is not passion, remember that. Love is divine.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

74

ALEXANADAR
May I love you?
JANKO
How can you possibly love me? We are worlds apart. We are too different. I am
visiting you because I have to; you are talking to me because you need somebody to
talk too.
ALEXANADAR
I dont need somebody to talk with. I dont need anybody. I need somebody to inspire
me. I am being inspired by talking with somebody. It is just the way I am used to.
JANKO
Why do you need to be inspired?
ALEXANADAR
For my work!
JANKO
What! (Janko rejects Alexandar.)- You think anybodys going to let you create
anything after what happened?
ALEXANADAR
It is just the way we are- the deranged minds. We do everything by ignoring the
world that surrounds us. We destroy the lives of many people and actually we dont
give a damn about it.
JANKO
They have people that care about other people! You are busted! If you are not good
with us that are hiding you we will give you to the organs of law and order. They
are going to put you on the right place.
ALEXANADAR
Why do you think the jail is the right place for me? Or for anybody? They say they
correct people there. On the other hand I have never met correct people at all.
JANKO
You have- the dead.
ALEXANADAR
You mean like me?
JANKO
You have never been to funerals?
ALEXANADAR
They are corps; I dont understand? (He goes to the place with whiskey. Pours a glass
and drinks it.)- People like me were always correct. We were neutral. They couldnt
reach us, that is why we achieved so much.
JANKO
Hitherto you always had everything. They cannot reach me too. But I have nothing.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

75

ALEXANADAR
(Shows the bottle with whiskey to Janko.)- Drink some of this. It will warm you up.
JANKO
Nee.
ALEXANADAR
Are you still without heating?
JANKO
My fart is as cold as the polar wind.
ALEXANADAR
That is the permanent problem of our civilization; somebody has, somebody does
not.
JANKO
The real problem is: who decides whether we should have or not. From what I can
see in the media they still consider as dangerous for our communist society. We
were nursing the rebellious ideas. They dont know what to do with us.
ALEXANADAR
You should hide with us.
JANKO
And die?
ALEXANADAR
You dont have to die if you dont feel like it.
JANKO
I definitely dont feel like that. It is just that I thought that you guys have some
kind of rules.
ALEXANADAR
The only rule that we have is that we have no rules, just the law of nature.
JANKO
And what is that law?
ALEXANADAR
If you live you survive; if you die you rot.
JANKO
You came to our primitive environment to rot
ALEXANADAR
Your environment is maybe now primitive, but I admire many things here. Like
that monastery of St.Nikola that in its walls contains the relics of its patron, Santa
Cross. If you leave a fruit inside of this temple it will not rot. We didnt know the
ones that have built this church were ours. Even the name of the city that is nearby
is symbolic- Prilep- which means - bat. Arent the bats amazing creatures? Bats- the
kings of the night.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

76

JANKO
Is everything really as you are saying? Again you are for the animals not for people.
Like all of the kings you worship the civilization all the time, yet it seems its rules
are a burden for you. You would like to escape from them. Just like any other king
you dont want the law to apply for you.
ALEXANADAR
(Angry.)- Stop it! I am not crazy! I dont think I am some kind of God.
JANKO
Maybe you are not crazy, but you are sick! You think only of yourself.
ALEXANADAR
I think of you. I care about you. I gave you the house. You are already living by our
rules. I have let you to build there. By our rules, of the masons, when you grow up
that house will become yours.
JANKO
Well thank you for that, but where are those rules? They may tell me- you were
stupid enough to work for that old vampire. Besides I dont like the way you do
things, everything with lack of humanity. You have to respect the civilization in
order to be able to have something from it. You dont respect my age. I child of my
age shouldnt work a job that is physically so demanding as that one. Besides you
are a sick old man! You gave me to work with the planks, but you didnt gave me
the equipment- the mask nor the working gloves.
ALEXANADAR
You didnt deserve them. Not yet. You should have a better relationship with your
patron. If you show some respect for this, than I will be more gentle with you.
JANKO
Who on earth can respect you after this? I thought I couldnt find the gloves and the
mask. You really did that- you told them to keep them away
ALEXANADAR
Of course I did. You know who I am.
JANKO
You were never afraid they may catch you? That you may finish in jail?
ALEXANADAR
No. I knew everybody around was like me. Everybody believed in corruption.
Everybody around me hated people; everybody around me lived with its highness,
the corruption. Nobody will appreciate you if you are in love; nobody will hate you if
you love money. Everybody will appreciate you if you have money. It is just the way
things are. If I notice I am surrounded with people, as you called them, than I would
be more cautious.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

77

JANKO
When you are surrounded with people you are wearing your mask.
ALEXANADAR
I must have my mask. The musk is protecting me from trouble, from all dangers the
humanity has. My musk is my helmet. In ancient times they were burying them
with the masks.
JANKO
I cannot see that you are wearing any mask. It is completely coalesced with your
face.
ALEXANADAR
(He drinks with anger another glass of whiskey.)- You should know it is very healthy
to have a mask. I found out about that when I lost my children. I thought that I had
some sort of friends. Actually they were all my enemies. They were all on the other
side.
JANKO
Or you wanted to see them on the other side. You wanted to be in that war all the
time.
ALEXANADAR
When you lose everything you ever cared about you want to gain respect by being
recognized by your enemy. You want to hear how they speak they are afraid from
you. You are too young, you havent yet experienced tragedy. You dont know how it
is.
JANKO
I am not ever going to experience anything dreadful. I love plain life.
ALEXANADAR
I bet you dont. That is why you want to do this with me.
JANKO
I want to I have to do this with you because I want to live in better living
conditions. Because I heard this is a way this is the only way to get out of the
orphanage. I have told you hundreds of times about this.
ALEXANADAR
You have told me hundreds of times because that is what you want me to think
about you. You are afraid I may know the truth about you. How much you like this.
JANKO
Whats this?
ALEXANADAR
Incredible power! You are afraid somebody may sense how much hooked you are;
just as I was at your age. It is about time you should ask yourself - who are you?
You are one of us; we are a part of you.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

78

JANKO
Did you mention my age? I have my age. I dont want to be a part of anything. I just
want to live the way all from my generation do. Hang out in fancy jeans; dream how
it would be when I am not going to be a virgin anymore.
ALEXANADAR
That is average. We dont have average!- like that they will tell you. Then again you
will say to yourself that you need us; to support you, to encourage you in your anger;
to give you power to diminish the buggers.
JANKO
I wont have buggers. I have people; I believe in humanity. There will be always
somebody to give me a hand.
ALEXANADAR
Then why dont you believe in God?
JANKO
God- that is so old fashioned. Older generation has him. We have knowledge,
science. We know that the solution for everything is in science.
ALEXANADAR
People still do die. Nobody lives forever. That means nobody will ever find the magic
potion. You will see so many people you admired lose their lives; you will see the
ones that cared about them humiliated and lonesome. No science could have helped
them. Then again you will feel hopeless and with a need of something powerful.
JANKO
So when did you hook at this power- shit?
ALEXANADAR
(He drinks again from the whiskey, with a bitter shine in his eyes.)- I dont know
exactly because that happened many times. I thought I was with that all my life. I
thought it was an illusion. This sense disappeared when I got married and had my
children. When I lost them I was sure I am hooked, forever. I couldnt keep on living
without that anymore. I thought about committing a suicide. I knew if somebody
finds out about this he will tell me that I am sick. I had to learn how to hide this
notion - of being with that. For a while I, myself thought I was sick. But then I saw
the genetic study. Every gen we inherit has many functions. The g-gen was for
parenthood too. It was firstly discovered too, it exists in all species. For example
women when they are pregnant are lesbians. This gen allows the organism to
transfer in its hyper- mode. Pregnant women or mothers with a small baby can
sleep only 4hours yet they feel completely healthy. Men develop mussels, and can be
very healthy with a poor food. That is why in the army and the similar institutions
homosexuality happens so often- not because they are surrounded by the people

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

79

from the same sex but because they dont sleep enough or they eat the same food
every day.
JANKO
or because they go through a terrible stress. Than the organism produces the
growth hormone, which can regenerate the tissues. But only till the certain level.
This can be healthy only for a certain period of time. The growth hormone has the
similar chemical structure as the alcohol. If practiced longer than normal, it can
have a destructive function for the tissues too. I know something about this; I have
read about this in the books that you have given to me. You have read them too; it
would have been impossible you dont know about this. You lie to yourself; that is
the way you are. You are an alcoholic. The growth hormone has the similar effect to
the human organism as plain alcohol. You have no wrinkles but you are an
alcoholic.
ALEXANADAR
(He looks at the glass with whiskey he has in his hand.)- I have no wrinkles. Admit
you thought I was 35 when you saw me first. You like me, dont you. That is normal;
that is good. That is how we can have each other and everybody from our sort.
Before I became this I thought this was a collective paranoia. I heard so many
people talking about it: How our streets were dangerous; How there are
conspirators in every bank, in every institution, in every shopping mall. And
actually this was truth. We are blessed by this. We have so much from this, from
our brotherhood. We have that; that sparkle in our eyes. We are connected just by
the way we look at each other; by the way we touch our bodies. We have enormous
sums of money, unlike the smelly rest of the humanity that eats from our garbage. I
have this. I have mu disease. I know I will see my wife and my children, somewhere
in the stars, when I die. I will float to them und hug them. They will tell me: We
loved you all this time; We were thinking about you, caring about you; You werent
aware but we were helping you too, sending you angels
JANKO
My parents are alive. How come they dont send me any angels?
ALEXANADAR
Angels do send angels to other angels. Maybe you are not one of them- like me.
JANKO
You? angel?? (He laughs with irony.)
ALEXANADAR
You cannot understand how it feels for my soul. What happened to me is so cruel.
JANKO
I would say you seem to me as a soulless bastard.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

80

ALEXANADAR
I am not soulless and unlike you I am not a bastard. I am a man that lost
everything that he ever cared about and believes in a higher goal- which is to
improve this civilization.
JANKO
So you wanted to help me by giving me a house. I didnt quite understand it was you
behind that. Alexandar that is nice. The next time I would care more about all that.
I would know better how to grab the chance. Now I have who to teach me. I have a
good teacher I have- how did you say- a good tutor. Can you create a model or a
slide of the house you want to give to me? Can you please draw a sketch of that
house. You are a big name. I would be happy to have something from you
ALEXANADAR
And you dont care that I am dead; or that I collaborated with the local communist
regime?
JANKO
Not at all Not any more- (He imitates Alexandars way of speaking.)- I was too
young; I didnt know what does this world consists from; from all its dangers and
corruptions; now I know I must play that game.
ALEXANADAR
Oh JankoOh Janko. (He tries to hug Janko, but he rejects him.)- I love you. I
would do everything for you. (Surprisingly all of a sudden he becomes serious.)- And
you will have to do everything for me; no matter what. You want us; you want to
become my interrex?
JANKO
What?
ALEXANADAR
You want to become me dont you? You know what they do to us. If we are not
enough useful they give us from the magic potion, we fall into coma. Than they
freeze us in the cryonic fridges, or simply they let us float on the iceberg in the
ocean till anybody find us. We can hibernate up till 400years.
JANKO
What!?
ALEXANADAR
Havent those from the social service told you about this?
JANKO
I am positive- this is a new one for me!
ALEXANADAR
Oh Janko (He tries to hug Janko, but he rejects him again.)

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

81

JANKO
Stop it!
ALEXANADAR
Why?
JANKO
Because it is time for the proverb game.
ALEXANADAR
Oh I see. My apologies, I am an old man, I forgot about our agenda The one that
flies high falls low.
JANKO
Dont try to impress anybody with the feathers that are not yours- like Icarus.
Though this proverb originates from a folk-story, about a bird that wanted to
impress the other birds by gluing beautiful feathers from the other birds on her
with mud, but when she flew the mud dried up the feathers felt down
As Janko is speaking the last line the light slowly falls down.
Scene 6
The set is the same as in scene 3. When the stage light appears, the closet
with the tape recorder is opened.
In off continues what Janko was speaking with Alexandar in the previous scene.
THE MAN IN BLACK sits in enface towards the audience beneath the tape recorder,
with his sun glasses at his face and chewing a gum. In front of him is the bed in
which are lying THE SOCIAL WORKER- dressed casual, and Janko in pajamas.
THE TAPE RECORDER
Alexandar: This one is- the lie has short legs, they always catch her.|Janko:
Obviously this does not apply for you. How about: The lie repeated many times
becomes truth.| Alexandar: Gat ya! That is not a proverb. Somebody of great
importance has sad that Oh Janko, yes I want to hug you. We had an agreement.
I may hug you, each time I get ya
THE SOCIAL WORKER
(She shows with a movement of her hand to the man in black to turn off the taperecorder.)
THE MAN IN BLACK
(He stands up. With quick emotionless movements he turns off the tape recorder,
closes the doors of the closet and sits down on his chair.)

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

82

THE SOCIAL WORKER

Dont ever let anybody to tell you - gat ya! You may say we instructed you to tell
him so. Tell him! We know he wasnt always rich!
JANKO
But you have told me not to be too harsh with him as well. After all he was your
client. I dont want to make him angry too much. Yes I want to gain something from
this. I dont want to be frozen like my (He imitates Alexandars way of official,
kings speaking.)- predecessor.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
He? our client?? You are our citizen. We care about you. You should know he lied
you about many things. Maybe he is not aware of it because he is nuts. He never
saw his parents- the person he was always speaking off as his mother is actually his
nanny from the orphanage. He had a surrogate - mother. The orphanage was really
a castle, but it was an orphanage. There is no cryonic program.
JANKO
How can I trust you? It seems you are with the communist regime.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
I am your friend. (She places Jankos hand on her stomach.)- I am telling you about
everything. Besides our system is not as bad as you are imagining it through his
lavish talks. I have been on west. I made a calculation how big are the salaries
there and here. When I calculated how high are the prices there, I can say the
living standards are the same everywhere.
JANKO
Prices are not everything the human life consists of. How about democracy, openmindedness
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Well that is the same too. They do take care what they say when they open there
mouth too; just like us.
JANKO
But for other reasons- because they want to be polite or something like that.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Not true. Oh and I have become like you. (She speaks to the man in black.)- Touch
your baby. Did you forget it is yours? (Janko pulls off his hand from the social
workers stomach.)- People are the same everywhere. We are all emotional.
The man in black puts his hand on the social workers stomach.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Can you feel how it is already moving?

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

83

The man in black smiles by showing his front teeth. He pulls off his hand and moves
his chair backwards.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
You should know Alexandars biography is fake. He had no brother or sister. Almost
everything about his life that was published was fake- his whole biography. From
his very beginning he was financed by the communist party. They controlled
everything around him and about him. They were with him everywhere.
JANKO
How about the loss of his children?
THE SOCIAL WORKER
I guess unfortunately that is truth.
JANKO
Even you dont know everything about him?
THE SOCIAL WORKER
How can I be? I am telling you this so that you can understand that he wasnt
always rich. He is somewhat like us.
JANKO
Us? All of a sudden you are for us? You seemed somehow against the system.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
I have to change a bit. I will become a mother.
JANKO
What is your plan? About this
THE SOCIAL WORKER
We should find a way to end up this as soon as possible.
JANKO
And about the baby?
THE SOCIAL WORKER
(She looks at the man in black; he responds by showing a smile and his front teeth
again.)- I will have the baby of course. The doctor told me that if I abort once again I
will never conceive again. I think to become a mother is a gorgeous thing.
JANKO
And to be able to take care of the child, of course. What does your cousin your
boyfriend think of this?
THE MAN IN BLACK
(He stands up somewhat angrily, puts on his black-leather-raincoat, opens the closet
and changes the tape in the tape recorder.)- Dont speak more than two hours. See
you soon my love (He exits.)

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

84

THE SOCIAL WORKER

My love as usually is not talkative. I see no reason why should you be so
disappointed in our system. I have been abroad a lot. Trust me- and there roses
dont bloom. Here you may receive everything from the system, there in the westyou should know people are not so warm and human as they appear in the soap
operas. If you stay without a leg, for example, yet you are without health insuranceyou will have to by the leg by yourself, or if you are broke, you will have to wait
months for it if not years.
JANKO
That is why all the disabled dont want to run away from here- is that what you are
trying to tell me?
THE SOCIAL WORKER
I am trying to tell you: it is not so bad. Depends how you percept it.
JANKO
And all that are healthy like me want to run away from here- if they let them say
what they really want? I percept all this as very sick and dangerous. You used to
think so too. Do yourRemember how you told me you were dreaming how the two of
us run through the border? You changed due to your upcoming motherhood. Think
about it: This may not be the healthy environment for your child.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Mine will have the best!
JANKO
How about his spiritual upbringing? Do you plan to baptize him? Do you want your
baby to be with no faith? As you may see here they dont like those that go to church
often.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
I dont like them too. Many nations dont have the intense religious education for
their children. I think religion is overestimated. I have in mind what my father
have told me about this. Those people that work in the churches are a bunch of
liars. All they do is they try to find something about our lives, and then on the basis
of that they steal everything from us.
JANKO
Religion is not just the institution; it is about your inner health, about ethics.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
As far as I know ethics is a science about remaining good. I havent seen goodies
miles around here. I think yours is a dangerous attitude. We shouldnt be that good
and nave. The naivets are eaten alive.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

85

JANKO
You dont care you are going to bare another SS-baby. Would you like to miss the
Christmas parties? Dont you want to experience all that with your child?
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Well the kindergarten parties are good enough, as far as I am concerned. For
anything extra I will have to wait in the storages, to give me the ingredients for
snacks and lemonades. You know how are those that work in the stores- they are
more likely not to give you anything. I dont feel like begging all the time; I am
completely satisfied with what they already decided to give us.
JANKO
But you may tell them: You were the good worker! Than they will have to give you.
That is by our law.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
They dont have to give me if they know there is nobody to catch them. Usually they
are good players. The storage employees tend to steal as much as possible for their
children.
JANKO
To steal from us. We should not let them steal what is ours.
The electricity wents of.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Again we were speaking something we shouldnt. Oh listen to this. Do you here
that- the tape recorder still works. They always care about our economy.
Both of them laugh.
JANKO
What am I to you? How will you answer this?
THE SOCIAL WORKER
You mean what I am to you. (She imitates Alaxandars way of speaking.)- I am your
foster sister, like the one king Vasilie had. But I am not widowed, my god not yet.
Oh marry me my king.
JANKO
I will marry you milady. With this. (Some movement appears beneath the sheet,
Janko is touching the hand of the social worker.)
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Oh is that ring the one from the sardine thin? (She is pulling her hand out of the
sheet, on her hand she has the ring from the thin.)

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

86

They continue laughing. As the set is changing slowly in off appears the sound of
bombs.
Scene 7
The scene is the same as in Scenes 2 and 4, but now the furniture shows
that this was an orphanage. This room from the gothic castle is filled with
old furniture that is not from same style. The big table is covered with a
cloth with white and blue stripes- as the ones they use in the public
messrooms.
Mariana is dressed as a nurse/servant in an orphanage, with a long black dress and
a white cap. Alexandar is wearing his dark blue uniform. Mariana is lying on the
table, the injection and a piece of paper with a small doze of dope is next to her. This
room is lightened with few candles. From the window we can see that the bombs are
falling outside. When a bomb falls very near, Alexandar that was standing goes
beneath the table.
MARIANA
Could you please bring my purse? I need a smoke. Its on the armor. You may get
out. It is not dangerous.
ALEXANDAR
Than how come everybody left?
MARIANA
They always follow the rules. Dont listen to those that always follow the rules.
They tend to manipulate us.
ALEXANDAR
When you say so (He goes to the armor which is completely covered with dust, and
dispositional. He takes the purse that is hanging with its handle hanged on the arm
of the armor. Goes to the table where Marana is lying. Takes the cigarette box from
the purse and puts one cigarette in Marianas mouth.)
MARIANA
The lady asks you for a fire.
ALEXANDAR
(He takes the match from her purse and lights up her cigarette.)
MARIANA
You may take one for yourself.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

87

ALEXANDAR
(Says no by pronouncing `-`)
MARIANA
Oh I forgot. You dont smoke. You are a good boy.
ALEXANDAR
Maybe I am bad. I am not smoking because it is not good for me. You should quit
cigarettes. They are not good for your ten. (He glides with his hand on her face.)
MARIANA
Stop that! Somebody may see us.
ALEXANDAR
Everybody left
MARIANA
You shouldnt become used to do this with me. Than when somebody is nearby may
see us, and we will be in trouble. In this life is the best if somebody has fewer habits
that are not good for him; as few as possible.
ALEXANDAR
How can this be bad for us? We are just showing some tenderness to one another.
MARIANA
Well I am supposed to have an equal relationship with everybody. Then I will have
to hug with all smelly pupils.
ALEXANDAR
You are particularly fond of me. Why?
MARIANA
Because of the same reason I am fond of all the people- I am fond of with; I have
something from you. I may thrust you. You are reliable. You know how to keep
secrets.
ALEXANDAR
I am secretive about this. (He takes the injection in his hand.)
MARIANA
Of course. You should know that if you say about this you may be in big trouble too.
They will tell you: Why didnt you say about this at the first place?
ALEXANDAR
I will tell them the truth and I wont give a damn what they will do to me. Because I
love you!
MARIANA
Dont scare me like that Alexandar. Now when I am under this I need to be
calmed down. You dont really know what love is, not yet. When I was at your age I
thought I know everything, but that was an illusion, beautiful illusion.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

88

ALEXANDAR
I love you!
MARIANA
Stop it! That is so stupid what you just sad. There is no love in this world. No
friendships, no belonging. Everything is with selfishness and arrogance. Rememberlove is fake!
ALEXANDAR
I need love even if it shows as fake. I need you. I love you.
MARIANA
Soon youll discover like all men that all you need is this in your butt! (She shows
the injection to Alexandar and laughs at him.)
ALEXANDAR
(He takes the injection in his hand.)- This is not good for you Mary.
MARIANA
Oh please dont call me like our servant, the one that died by stepping on a mine. I
dont want her spell around me.
ALEXANDAR
Is it true they wont attack us, or you are so up that you cannot sense how things
really are?
MARIANA
Stop it. They know we are orphanage. They cannot steal anything from
us. We are not endangering them anyway.
ALEXANDAR
How about Rober? They knew he was hiding here.
MARIANA
They think they know he is dead. After all we will tell them they shot him.
ALEXANDAR
(He hugs Mariana.)- Mariana why did you shot him?
MARIANA
Because He wanted to do the same with you that he did with me. (She hugs
Alexandar.)- Thank you for keeping our secrets.
Again a bomb falls very near. Mariana and Alexandar hug stronger.
ALEXANDAR
(He takes Marianas hand. He tucks up the sleeve of her dress. He kisses her hand.)Your hand is so beautiful, but destroyed by that needle. (He throws the injection
behind his back.)

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

89

MARIANA
Why did you do that? That was my last one. Find it and bring it back to me. I
cannot go in the hospital to ask for more again. They are going to throw me out.
Alexandar, please bring that back to me!
ALEXANDAR
Id rather be dead.
MARIANA
Why? Do you want my hand? Do you want me to give my hand to you?
Alexandar goes at the far left of the room to search the needle. A bomb falls near the
window. The window falls apart. All the candles go off. Rubbish and dust enters
inside from the explosion. The scene is in a complete darkness. We can hear
Alexandar cough. He lights up a lamp. Mariana is not on the table. He is searching
in the rubbish.
ALEXANDAR
Where are you? (He takes from the ashes and the dust her hand, which is appart
from the rest of her body.)
Scene 8
This set is the same as in Scene 1 and 5. But now everything is arranged as
for a birthday party, with plates with cakes and sandwiches, and with
marry candles, paper ornaments and crystal bottles for brandy. When the
light of this scene went on, the scene is in semi light- since obviously they
have their slide session. Slide projector projects a black and white photo
of a completely naked, skinny man from concentration camp whose penis
is enormous. Next to the projected image on the left side is the 2m high
and wide big present, decorated with colorful paper and golden tape.
Alexandar and Janko laugh when the scene-light went on. They hold glasses in their
hands.
ALAXANDAR
You should know this is no photo editing. No tell me what do you drink?
JANKO
Whatever you tell me to. You are the boss.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

90

ALEXANDAR
That is how I like you. (He goes to the commode with the alcohol and pours in the
glass that Janko gave him the liquid from an ampule he hides in his suit. Janko
cannot see this because he is with his back towards him. Than he puts some alcohol
in his glass too. He gives Jankos full glass to Janko.)- Lets drink this to the bottom.
Alexandar and Janko hit the glasses and drink all at once.
ALEXANDAR
This photo shows the irony of our civilization. Nobody knows how the growth
hormone can be activated in an adult man. With starving. Our civilization usually
focuses on the success and neglects the reasons for it. I would agree that a lot about
us is bad. But if we are open-minded and brave, we can surpass the averageness of
our culture. This photo shows an exact example of elephantiasis. I have to change
this and replace it with something more positive. I cannot watch this anymore, it
depresses me as hell. (He changes the current slide. The next one is projected: This
is portrait of a 5years old girl that has no lips. She is smiling but she looks scary
because we can see all her teeth.)- This girl when she was a baby was eaten by a rat
in her cradle. In western societies they dont plant cannabis near the kinder gardens
(which is a natural pesticide) because there this plant is illegal. So all of these
dangerous pests can attack our babies because they can enter the kindergartens.
JANKO
Not just the gnats, people are dangerous as well. Look what happened to your
children. (He laughs at Alexandar.)
ALEXANDAR
(He is so angry that his face becomes completely red.)- My children are not just like
any other children.
JANKO
That is what you think. For the Mother Nature we are all the same. We live and die
and nobody ever cares about us, like for this girl or for that living corps with big
prick.
ALEXANDAR
Contemporary man can have his dignity with the help of nature and architecture.
That is why contemporary architecture tries to bring the human kind closer to the
nature.
JANKO
Still we do need protection. From the nature, that we are a part from. We need
protection from ourselves, lets face it. Who harmed those two in the slides- people! I
disagree with you because the origin of the architecture is in its protection from the

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

91

dangers of the nature: protection from the rain, dust, animals and dangerous
people.
ALEXANDAR
You cannot disagree with me because you are not allowed to!
JANKO
Why?
ALEXANDAR
Because I am your boss!
JANKO
I see Please turn of that slide. I fell sick already.
ALEXANDAR
(He turns off the slide projector and goes to the commode. There with the stick he
brakes peace from the ice and gives it to Janko.)- Put it on your neck youll feel
better.
JANKO
(He puts this ice-cube on his neck.)- Strange, I cannot feel this as cold. I cannot wait
anymore Alexandar. Finally I want you to impress me with your geniality. Show me
the house you projected exclusively for me.
ALEXANDAR
Are you sure you are prepared for this?
JANKO
As hell!
ALEXANDAR
Than you will see it. (He goes to the big present. He undoes the tape, the colorful
paper falls down. The object that appears is a 2m high and wide form of plain paper
house, all in black.)
JANKO
Where is the door Alexandar? Why I cannot feel my legs?
ALEXANDAR
There is no door. You will need it not to enter this.
JANKO
Please open it (We can sense he hardly speaks, his voice is shaking.)- I know you
must have placed a door somewhere. You couldnt have forgotten that every house
needs a door. You are such a great architect.
ALEXANDAR
All right. You want me to open the door. (He tries to reach the ice-stick. He changes
his mind and he takes the keys from his pocket.)
JANKO
You told me not: Why I cannot move my legs?

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

92

ALEXANDAR
Oh that You drink too much. You will replace me, you will became my interrex, so
that I can be reborn on another place and continue with my important design. You
are fading. Soon we will freeze you. You will become a house like this one, all in
black- as your common mind. Maybe somebody will unfreeze you. Somebody like
you- all human. Trust me those are rare in our civilization, maybe Jay was the last
one. By now you should have faded. You the peasants from this region have very
strong organism. Oh you wanted me to open the house (He inclines and with his
key he cuts the cardboard of the house, vertically upwards.)
From the house exits THE SOCIAL WORKER. She has a gun pointed at Alexandars
head.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Gat ya! I heard everything you said! Who is going to arrive?
ALEXANDAR
Most probably nobody. They should of have been here by now. They sensed you were
here already. I guess soon your people will arrive?
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Right- 1:0 for you.
ALEXANDAR
(He tries to reach the ice-stick.)
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Dont even think about it or (She revolves her gun.)
JANKO
(Falls down from the place where he was sitting in unconsciousness.)
Scene 10
The set is the same as in Scene 3 and 6. Next to Jankos bed is an
instrument with an infusion-vessel which tube ends up in Jankos arm.
When this scene begins the closet with the tape recorder is closed
Janko is very pail, THE SOCIAL WORKER sits on the chair next to his bed and
holds his hand; THE MAN IN BLACK is on his usual position sitting beneath the
closet.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

93

THE SOCIAL WORKER

You shouldnt have told him like that about his children. Thats harsh. Now he can
say he had the right to do that to you.
JANKO
Did you catch the others?
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Unfortunately not. We closed the borders, but they had run away immediately or
they are still hiding inside under a pseudo name. We cannot keep the borders closed
too long. Unfortunately we didnt find out how they planned to replace you with
him. If anything from this is truth. I think he is just delusional. He had the potion;
the rest was his imagination. He is sick but we are not going to let him trick us once
more. When I told you he could tell you about your temper I meant metaphorically.
We decided to get rid of him, entirely.
JANKO
Did you say that what he said about his children wasnt a lie?
THE SOCIAL WORKER
I didnt say everything he said was false.
JANKO
Anyway you skipped to say this one was real. I forgot that wouldnt be good for your
reputation. Now you are with the communist party.
The man in black coughs significantly.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Let us skip this issue for now. What is important for us is that the man is sick and
he is dangerous for all of us so we decided to get rid of him for good. How are your
legs?
JANKO
Well not good. They sad I will be better from the latest injection. I sensed no
difference
THE SOCIAL WORKER
Dont worry. They gave you the best doctors in the country.
JANKO
and I think I still have a fever.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
(She touches his forehead.)- You have a little fever. Thats truth. Anyway to make it
clear: we made the bastard do to himself what he wanted to do to you. Do you want
to hear it? (She tells to THE MAN IN BLACK with a movement of her head to play

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

94

the tape recorder; he opens up the closet.)- Do you want to go to the sea and rest from
this?
JANKO
Am I not supposed to feel better firstly? Sea? Sounds nice I didnt say I dont want
to hear that shit at all, but please not now. I need some rest.
THE SOCIAL WORKER
I say its rather best now. It is important for you and your future- for you to know
entirely about this. Soon we will have to turn back the equipment and use the tape
for something better. We are short of money for this, for now. Thats why we
contacted these from abroad to take care for his body.
THE MAN IN BLACK turns on the tape.
THE TAPE RECORDER
Alexandar: Oh my god Oh my god This really begins This divine flame that
comes from my feet and ends up in my neck My dear children I will see you
again To stay with you forever Somebodys voice: Does this make you feel
somehow glorious? If yes- explain how. Alexandar: On the contrary, this hurts like
shitOoooooo I cannot believe this could happen to me The best of all
masons I didnt deserve this I always did everything proper and on time I
always took care about my manners, about the way I express my thoughts I was
always polite I improved the pronunciation of rr I am from the academy I
attended the best behavioral courses in town Reverrbrate! Reverrbrate! (And
Scottish I am going to become with this!)This really hurts like shitOoooooooo
I am being shrroud right now (He begins to scream.)- Aaaaaaa! Aaaaaaa!!
Scene 11
This set is the waiting room, the corridor in front of the room from the
previous scene. From the left side is the entrance door from the previous
scene. From time to time somebody enters and exits from this room so that
we can see that somebody else is lying in Jankos bed, two people are aside
this persons bed, the closet is opened and the tape recorder is running. In
the middle is a white, hospital bench, on which Janko is sitting. On the
right side of the bench is the door from another room- where THE SOCIAL
WORKER is taking her birth. On the right end of the scene is another
bench (which is not parallel to the scene as the Jankos one, but
perpendicular). On it sits THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER; this

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

95

means we can watch him in his profile, unlike Janko who we see in his
enface.
Janko sits while his legs are covered with a blanket. On the bench next to him is a
box with candies packaged in the traditional for this occasion luminous paper. In off
we can hear how THE SOCIAL WORKER is screaming from time to time, taking the
birth of her baby.
JANKO
Your daughter is all like you.
THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER
You are the first one to tell me that. Everybody tells me she was like her mother. I
never had any interest for arts, I was always so exact. For me the arts were always
a profession for the liars. Thats why I became a zoologist.
JANKO
She has your nose.
THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER
Please speak a little lauder. I am an old man. And this screaming is too laud.
JANKO
Her nose is like yours!
THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER
(He touches his nose.)- Oh I guess that proves she is really mine. I know when cats
are taking a birth they always inherit their fathers nose and their mothers ears. Or
was it vice versa? I forgot- but I remember that if they have that colorful stain on
their head it is always on the she-cats
JANKO
You know a lot for a man of your age.
THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER
What? (He races one of his ears towards Janko with his hand.)
JANKO
You are well educated!
THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER
Well if you refer to my cat example- thrust me, the old man- there is almost no
organic difference between people and animals. It is all about survival.
JANKO
(He speaks lauder than before.)- I guess your daughter inherited the survival gens
from you; that is why she is so capable. It seems my parents gave me no gens for
this.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

96

THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER

It is definitely very important to be capable in a society like ours.
JANKO
This is why you decided to have descents.
THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER
She decided, we told her that is a wise decision; due to her age. At our time we were
deciding to have children much earlier.
JANKO
Many things changed, unfortunately for worst.
THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER
What?
The nurse exits the room where THE SOCIAL WORKER is taking her birth. She is
in a hurry, exiting the scene at the left side.
JANKO
(To the nurse.)- Is she OK?
THE NURSE
(She unpleasantly stops her hurry.)- Of course she is. Dont worry about her she is so
healthy.
THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER
(He is trying to reach the pocket of his coat.)
THE NURSE
(To the father of the social worker.)- Smoking here is not allowed!
THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER
What?
THE NURSE
(She moves her head horizontally in left and right, and leaves the scene in the left
side in a confusion.)
JANKO
She wanted to tell you are not allowed to smoke here!
THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER
(He takes out his cigarette box 1cm out of his pocket so that Janko can see it, and
immediately puts it back.)- The bitch knows where I keep my cigarettes. I have been
here before.
JANKO
So you pretended you couldnt hear her. Did you pretend with me too?
THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER
What?

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

97

THE NURSE
(She enters the scene from the left and heads in a hurry towards the door on the right
side.)
JANKO
Nurse! Here you used to play some elevator music for us in the waiting room. It is
kind of depressing without it.
THE NURSE
Music? Of course. Ill see what I can do about this.
THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER
Did you give her the injection? To the cats we usually give it, so that it will hurt
less.
THE NURSE
But you see the ones for the people cost much more. She can do better without. She
is so healthy. Anyway for the first birth is always recommendable the natural way.
(She exits the scene from the door at the right.)
THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER
Not at her age! Nurse!
JANKO
(With an irony.)- Now she didnt hear you!
THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER
How was your last lesson?
JANKO

THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER

(He makes a movement with his hand as he is drawing.)- You are attending the
drawing lessons with my daughter. How to you find the school? I found it a bit odd
for a girl of her age.
JANKO
Oh not at all. Even people of your age attend the school. That is so modern. Where
is the happy father?
THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER
He is on a SS trip!
JANKO
We all became used to be followed all the time in a society like ours (From
beneath his blanket falls down a wooden cue.)
THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER
Somebody had forgotten his cues. Ill go to the reception about this.
JANKO
No. They are mine.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

98

The blanket falls from Jankos bench; we can see his legs are amputated. At this
moment begins the music- that the nurse arranged to be played. It is the same music
as the one played from the gramophone from the first act. The other wooden cue falls
down from the bench and the leg implants appear- lied on the bench.
JANKO
Could you please help me cover up? Its so cold here.
THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER
Oh Sorry. I didnt know about this. Poor child. When did She told me nothing of
this (He helps Janko to sit in a better position and covers him with the blanket. He
sits next to Janko with a bitterness showing at his face.)
In off we hear how THE SOCIAL WORKER screams, somebody says: push , push ;
then the crying of the two babies.
THE NURSE
(In an extreme hurry the nurse opens the door.)- Where is the happy father?
JANKO AND THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER
On a SS trip!
JANKO
Are they
THE NURSE
(In an extreme hurry she closes the door.)
JANKO
boys?
THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER
Why do you think the twins have to be of one gender?
JANKO
I dont. This is a way to ask in a quickest manner. Cant you see- she is in a hurry. I
am fully adapted to our society. You may thrust me it is better like this. I am a good
worker. I received all this equipment immediately, others wait years.
THE NURSE
(Opens up the door, we can see only her head.)- Are you ready?
JANKO
Is everything OK?
THE NURSE
Of course.

INTERREX|IGOR POP TRAJKOV

99

THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER

(Stands up.)
THE NURSEW
Stop immediately! Dont you know our rules? You may see the mother after two
days. I will bring you the little one now.
JANKO
One? We know, we heard they are two.
THE NURSE
Stop the bullshit- it is one baby! Are you prepared?
Janko and THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER stare at each other horrified.
THE NURSE
I am serious- are you ready to see the baby.
THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER sits again next to Janko.
JANKO AND THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER
We are!
The nurse exits the door and turned with her back towards the audience and with
the baby in her arms, approaches the bench with Janko and THE FATHER OF THE
SOCIAL WORKER.
THE FATHER OF THE SOCIAL WORKER
Oh my God!
JANKO
Bloody hell!
The lights went down. Only the nurse is lightened with one reflector. She turns
towards the audience to show what she has in her hands- one baby with two heads.
