Fuel Pump Shock Absorber
Dear Sirs,
The fuel pumps mounted on our 50-90 bore MC/MCE engines incorporate a combined hydraulic shock absorber/accumulator, see
Encl. 1, the purpose of which is to reduce pressure peaks and
to ensure that the high-pressure chamber of the fuel pump is
adequately filled during suction.
In general, the shock absorber has functioned satisfactorily
for many years, however, there have been a few cases where
cracks have initiated in the sealing ring groove of the shock
absorber housing, see Encl. 2.
Investigation has recently revealed that a cause of these
cracks may be a pressure build-up of approx. ten times the
normal shock absorber working pressure between the sealing
ring, Pos. 1, and the guide ring, Pos. 2.
This high pressure was generated by a pumping action, due to
the fact that the guide ring gap was reduced to zero because of
high temperatures. The guide ring then acted a tight sealing
ring, leading to the high pressure between the sealing ring (1)
and guide ring (2).
Encl. 3 shows the present ring gap and our new recommendation
for the ring gap.

A larger gap can be made on guide rings in stock by cutting a

few millimetres out of the ring. The old and new gaps can be
seen in Encl. 3.
New guide rings ordered from MAN B&W Diesel A/S or the
licensees will, from now on, have the larger gap.
If your shock absorbers have not been subjected to cracks, the
introduction of the new type of guide rings can wait until the
next planned overhaul.
The procedure for overhauling shock absorbers can be found in
Procedure 909-4 of the instruction book.
Yours faithfully,

Countermeasures against Cold Corrosion
in Exhaust Valve Housing
Dear Sirs,
Cold corrosion as experienced in some exhaust valve housings
have, in general, been eliminated by the application of a heavy
duct exhaust valve housing in combination with a by-pass
cooling water arrangement introduced on the Mark V engines.
Recently, however, we have received a number of reports stating
that cold corrosion has also occurred on S70MC and S80MC Mark V
engines, however, at positions which were formerly free of cold
corrosion, viz. in the lowermost part of the gas duct, adjacent
to the bottom piece.
We have therefore modified the cooling water flow, and this has
been tested in service for more than one year with good
results.
The modified cooling water flow gives a general increase in the
duct wall temperature, particularly in the area subject to
condensation of sulphuric acid.
As illustrated on the enclosed sketches (Figs. 1 & 2), the
cooling water inlet to the valve housing has changed position.
Originally it was taken directly from the cylinder cover (A,
Fig. 1) into the bottom of the housing. Now the inlet is taken
from a pipe connection on the outlet pipe from the cylinder
cover (B, Fig. 2).

Orifice plates inserted in the outlet pipes from the cylinder

cover and exhaust valve housing, respectively, control the
cooling water flow amount through the valve housing (C & D,
Fig. 2).
The original inlet at the bottom of the valve housing has been
plugged with a fitting through which the valve housing can be
drained.
On engines in service, the above modification can be retrofitted. The retrofit kit includes the necessary pipes, fittings
and a drilling jig.
The design of new housings has been updated in accordance with
the above. Future deliveries of spare housings will be fully
interchangeable with housings that are modified with the
retrofit kit.
For further details and enquiries, please contact our Diesel
Service department, or the engine builder.

Drain on Fuel Pumps between
Top Cover and Pump Barrel
Dear Sirs,
It has occasionally been reported and observed that the space
between the top cover and the fuel pump barrel, see the
enclosed drawing No. 559646-2.2, pos. 1, has been blocked with
coked heavy fuel oil due to a combination of leaky sealing
rings, pos. 2, and a blocked internal drain, pos. 3.
As a result, the VIT function may be obstructed in its upward
movement with the consequence that engines operating above
approx. 85% load will run with too high a combustion pressure,
because the fuel pump injection timing cannot be retarded.
To eliminate this, it is recommended that a new drain hole be
drilled in the pump housing, as shown on the enclosed drawing
No. 559645-0.1. Furthermore, the old drain hole should be
plugged.
The modification can be introduced on plants in service
provided the specified tolerances are kept, ref. drawing
No. 559645-0.1.
The following procedure is recommended:
1)

First dismantle and clean the fuel pump barrel and suction
valve, and then replace all sealing rings in accordance
with the overhauling instruction in the instruction manual
(Chapter 909-3).

2)

Clean the fuel pump housing, especially in the area where

the sealing rings are working.

3)

Drill the drain hole by means of a hand-drill and a gauge

as shown on the enclosed drawing No. 559645-0.1, pos. 1.
The accurate positioning of the hole in the fuel pump
housing is important for the proper functioning of the
drain.

4)

Plug the old drain hole, see pos. 6 on drawing

No. 559646-2.2.

It is necessary to protect the fuel pump housing against

drilling chips when drilling the hole, for instance by means of
the collector shown on the above-mentioned drawing. To avoid
damage to the sealing rings when mounting the fuel pump barrel,
it is very important to round the edge of the hole in the pump
housing as shown on drawing No. 559645-0.1.
Gauge and collector as well as pipe and fittings can be ordered
in accordance with the enclosed table No. 559647-4.1, and
fitted as shown on drawing 559646-2, items 4 and 5.

Service dept. or one of our licensees.
