AsiaFood Expo Reflection Paper

The much awaited activity for the food and beverage industry was held last September 9 to 12, 2015 at World
Trade Center, Manila, Philippines. It has been held for 24 years and it has been continuously successful in
exposing all the latest food processing, packaging and handling machineries, equipment and technology.
ASIAFOOD EXPO is a 3-day event that delivers the best showcase for the food and beverage industry, be it
raw materials, ingredients, processing equipment, packaging and handling machineries. AFEX carries the
goal of serving the Food Industry, its investors and entrepreneurs. It is a continuing phenomenon that boasts
of full house participation with a diversified roster of companies and top of the line showcases on display.
ASIAFOOD EXPO has indeed gone a long way from its first year in the 90s, bringing along with them
enlightening endeavors of success and hard work from hopeful entrepreneurs who have ventured with us
through time. But one thing is for sure, weve been through these years not letting go of our true aim: To
uplift the Philippine Food Industry and the Filipino Entrepreneurs; we are living the true meaning of quality
exhibits and its real value for entrepreneurs.
From about 20 food companies, five were interviewed about the safety measures of their company and they
are as follows:

King Sue

Dees Gourmet

New Flavor House

W.L. Foods

Miguelitos

The details about these companies will be further discussed in the succeeding pages.

King Sue

Plant Location: Caloocan City

King Sue ham


King Sue Ham and Sausage co., Inc., is a company that produces quality processed meat products at a
reasonable price. It aims to become a brand of choice and for its products to fill every household in the
country. It has a standard for safety and quality. From sourcing and handling of raw materials, to product
distribution, their products are well handled. Their raw meat comes from Class AAA Slaughterhouse and sent
to proper storage (i.e. chilling, storing in dry place) and the spices comes from local and imported reputable
distributors. They implement Just-In-Time and First-In-First Out Systems to ensure that the food they produce
is always new.
As for Manpower Management, the following is observed:

Disciplined Workers Every employee is responsible for quality

Proper Hygiene is practiced

Fast and Efficient Work Output

Handling of Machines/Equipment by Trained Laborers

Quality Control and Continuous Improvement

Sampling a Random Selection of Finished Goods

Reformulation of Products to Better Meet Client/Consumer Preferences

All of King Sues products pass thru a metal detector to ensure that their products are free of contaminants

Every production process is strictly monitored to ensure compliance to food safety standards.

All of their products are processed and packed hygienically to ensure the quality of the finished products.

Dees Gourmet
Location: Paranaque City

Dees Gourmet is considered to be the best handmade baked popcorn in town. Light and crunchy, Dee's Gourmet
Popcorn can be an alternative snack option that will make a consumer crave for more. The Popcorn kernels are popped
using oils that have no transfat and are perfectly baked before they are seasoned with pleasant taste of flavors one
can imagine.

The company is FDA approved and has good manufacturing practice.

New Flavor House


Plant Location: Malabon City

New Flavor House creates a wide range of nature-identical, artificial and natural flavors customized to suit
local and international tastes. They produce fragrances and flavors but for the expo, flavors for the foods
were only displayed.

Their mission is to provide quality flavors, seasonings, food colorings and fragrances in both local and
international market at a very competitive price that will assists our clients in developing high quality newconcept products, part of each mission.

The company has all the certifications: HACCP, GMP and ISO.

W.L. Foods

Plant Location: Valenzuela City

W.L. FOOD PRODUCTS is one of the biggest manufacturers of snack foods in the Philippines. The company
was established in August 1986 and started in the production of good quality Cheez-zum product.
W.L. foods is observing Hazard Analysis Critical and Control Points. To prove the public wrong with the
misconception that junk food production is dirty, they allow plant tours in their production area and willingly
show every step of their process.

Products are moved by equipment making sure that there is no human contamination happening.
According to the interviewed representative of W.L. foods, they are following all the standards for food
processing: they have HACCP and GMP but he is quite unsure about the ISO certification of the company.

Miguelitos

Plant Location: Paranaque City


Miguelitos offers ice cream products, waffle mixes, and powdered drinks. They produce vast flavors that
consumers would come back for more.

Miguelitos International Corporation aims to provide consumers with food cart products of the highest caliber,
and to assist interested parties to invest in a 100% Filipino business that is lucrative andgives away 98% of
customer satisfaction.

Based on my observation, the employees that served ice cream wear apron, plastic gloves, making sure that
the food is not contaminated. As of now, they have HACCP and is currently working on their ISO certification.
