One night, I missed the last bus and didn't have enough cash to take a taxi. With no
other choice, I decided to walk the two-kilometre journey home, which would have been fine
if I _9_ so tired that day. It also didn't help that the route was pretty rough and dark. But I

looked concerned, aske.d where I was __.1l_ . "Not many people walk through here," he
said, and offered me a ride. He really made my day as he went out of his way to get to my
apartment. What was more significant, __1L , was the story behind it.
During the ride, the driver told me that when he saw me walking, it

reminded him
his uncle who used to walk to work by the same road and though he often saw his
uncle on the way, he had never offered a ride as he was headed in a different direction .

Sadly his uncle passed away due to an illness, and until today he still

being kinder to his uncle. So when he spotted me walking that night, he just had to stop and
help.

Questions 16 - 25
Read the following article and answer the questions that follow.
Everyday Superfruits
Even so often little-known fruits are plucked from
obscurity to be acclaimed as the latest nutritional
miracle. Think acai berry and goji berry. Studies
suggest that more readily available fruits have equal
or superior powers. Here are some:
Apples: French research reveals that two substances found in apples - boron and a
flavonoid called phloridzin - may increase bone density and protect against
osteoporosis. Other studies suggest that eating apples may greatly reduce the risk
of developing cancers of the lung, colon, liver and breast.
Blueberries: One cup (1 SOg) of blueberries supplies 24% of your daily vitamin C
needs and about 14% of your fibre needs. It also contains vitamin Kand the trace
mineral, manganese - all for only 250kJ. Blueberries also contain a diverse group
of phytochemicals that help decrease inflammation that leads to chronic diseases.
Research has linked them to heart, cognitive and eye health benefits. Raspberries,
blackberries and strawberries also qualify for superfood status.
Citrus Fruits: All these fruits are low in kilojoules and packed with helpful
nutrients. UK research in 2011 suggested that the flavanones in citrus fruits may
protect against stroke and heart disease. Studies also show that a high intake of
citrus fruits can reduce the risk of stomach cancer by 28%.
Kiwifruit: This is one of the most nutritionally powerful fruits. A single large
kiwifruit contains a day's worth of vitamin C, and is one of the few fruits to contain
vitamin E that can prevent dementia. Kiwifruit also offers fibre and potassium.

[25 marks]
Questions 26 - 31 are based on the following passage.
As the train began heading south, the students pulled out the guitars and began to sing
and dance in the coaches. She sat in her seat and tried to see the passing landscape
through the dirty windows and darkening night. Around 10 pm, a little more than an hour
into the trip, two fri~nds asked her to walk with them to the other coaches to see if they
knew any of the students on board.
As they went between the coaches, .one friend was in front of her and another behind.
The lights overhead were burnt out and it was hard to see. Unknown to Daniela, the
walkway that typically covers the gap between the couplings of the coaches was not in
place. Her tall friend Diego, with his long legs, could easily step over the opening, but
jpt as petite Daniela was following him in the dark, the train went around a large curve
and the gap opened even wider.
Daniela took a step and suddenly felt herself falling through the air. To her friends,
one minute Daniela was with them and the next she was gone. A passenger having a
smoke at the side of the coach said, "Hey, that girl just fell!" Daniela felt as if she was
being tugged from side to side. And then as if waking up from a disorienting dream, she
found herself lying in the middle of the tracks on a dark night.
She felt no pain, but her hair and something warm and sticky was on her face - blood
from a small gash over her left eye. She tried to move her left hand to wipe the hair out
of her eyes, but failed to. What she saw sent a shock of horror through her. She was
bleeding profusely from the open wounds of two severed arms. She tried to move and
for the first time a surge of pain shot through her body. As a medical student she knew
she must not panic. She knew her loss of blood must be massive.
Another train could come any minute, she realised. She had to get off the tracks and
she had to get help soon or she would die. She saw in the distance the lights of what
looked like a petrol station by a highway. Somehow, despite her massive injuries and
pain, she was able to lift her back and roll herself off the tracks so that she was lying in
the gap between the north and south-bound rail lines. But she could move no farther.
She began to scream, "Help me! Please help me!"
By chance, at the moment a farm worker named Morales was enjoying a cigar in the
warm night air while having a stroll down the tracks. He had been beside the tracks
when the train packed with students rattled by. He could hear their singing. A few
minutes later he heard Daniela yelling, "Help me." He ran toward her.
"Don't move, I will get help," said the startled Morales. He ran to the public phone at
the petrol station. Seeing Morales and hearing his voice, Daniela felt the first wave of
hope. But as he ran off and she waited for help to come, she felt her hope slipping
away. "I must not lose faith," she told herself. It took just four minutes for the paramedic

team to arrive at the spot where they saw Morales waving his arms between the
highway petrol station and the railway tracks. Grabbing his kit, paramedic Solis quickly
followed Morales down a pathway to the tracks.
The team worked quickly, staunching the flow of blood with tourniquets on each limb,
starting an IV, placing her in a neck brace and putting her on the spinal board. But
suddenly they heard a rumbling sound and felt the rails vibrating - another train was
coming. They could see the headlight of its engine lighting up both sets of tracks like
silver beams. It was not safe to stay beside her, but they didn't have time to lift her out of
the way.
As the paramedic team darted to' safety just in time, Daniela felt the shaking and
buffeting of wind as the train roared almost over her. It seemed to go on forever. As
soon as it cleared they ran back to her side, relieved to find that while the wind from the
train had moved her a few feet, Daniela survived .
