Assessment

Assessment requirements
To achieve each outcome a learner must demonstrate the ability to:

1. Implement name
resolution services

5. Configure and
troubleshoot network
connectivity

9. Configure and support

routing, remote access
and security

a. Design an automatic IP address assignment plan to accommodate a

routed network environment install and authorise a DHCP server
create and configure appropriate scopes and scope options create and
test client reservations install DHCP relay agents or enable BootP
forwarders
b. Design a domain naming strategy install the DNS service create
forward and reverse lookup zones delegate authority for a zone enable
dynamic updates add appropriate resource records
c. Design a NetBIOS name resolution strategy install WINS add static
WINS records for non-WINS clients configure push/pull replication
partners
d. Evaluate the alternative strategies for automatic IP addressing in a routed
network and alternative name resolution techniques
a. Produce a troubleshooting strategy for a routed environment to include:
IP addressing problems name resolution problems automatic IP
addressing problems a backup strategy for DNS, WINS and DHCP
b. Capture and analyse network data using network monitoring tools
c. Provide connectivity solutions for a multi-vendor networking
environment
d. The report should include an outline of the type of network connectivity
issues that could be encountered in a large multi-vendor networking
environment and propose solutions using available utilities and services.
Some evidence should be presented of learners attempt at solving
connectivity problems
a. Configure inbound and outbound VPN connections and describe the
benefits to an organisation of using a VPN as a viable alternative to a
dedicated line and research the practical applications of remote access
b. Configure remote access policies to control the access of various groups
via RRAS
c. Outline the security threats faced by modern computer networks
d. Produce a security strategy for issuing certificates in a large organisation
using an Enterprise certificate authority hierarchy and configure IPSec
policies for data encryption.

Case Study/Background Info Part 1

Assessment

United wholesale Scotland (UWS) was founded in 1980 and has its headquarter in
Edinburgh, Scotland.
The company is a Distribution company that deals in home produced house hold and
groceries products and have distribution in Glasgow. In 2008 the company acquired
another Distribution company (Clyde Importers) to take over the control of the Import
market. Clyde Importers import electronic products, toys and imported house hold
products. United wholesale has its own sales, marketing, credit control and IT
department (100 workstations and servers in total). The Clyde Importers has sales,
marketing and credit control (55 workstations and servers in total). The headquarters
of united wholesales is located in Edinburgh where everything is being coordinated
and consists of higher management and a corporate IT division which formulates the
management strategies and overall IT strategy and support/monitor the IT operations
of the individual departments (20 workstations and servers in total).
Because of the acquisitions in the previous years, UWS overall network is consisted
of hardware and software of various vendors, technology and age. The main problems
that appear during the everyday operations are often hardware breakdowns (old
hardware), low network QoS due to software and protocol incompatibility, limited
security features etc. The corporate IT department has planned a new network strategy
and plans to implement a new network infrastructure using Windows 2008 server
network housing its own DHCP, DNS, WINS, IIS (for hosting website & web-mail
services) and other domain services including print & file management. There is a
need to isolate the networking operation at various departments for security and
performance purposes (One possible way: constrain using logical networks. So, sales,
computing, marketing departments etc will be in different local subnet).
Assume that you have been hired as a network consultant to design and implement the
networking infrastructure as mentioned above.

Description of problem to be solved

As a consultant and part of your entire work, you are required to produce a design and
implementation report to address IP allocation and name resolution services
considering the following major issues.

Deliverables
1. Designing and implementing an automatic IP addressing mechanism
[Assessment Criteria: 1.a, 1.d]
2. Designing and implementing a domain naming strategy
[Assessment Criteria: 1.b, 1.c, 1.d]

Case Study/Background Info Part 2

As described in Part 1

Assessment

Description of problem to be solved

The strategy document describes about linking the Distribution site to the
Headquarters. Moreover, the network administrators, the Board of Directors and other
employees will need to access their mails and other online services from home but
also while on the move, through the Internet. So the availability and the quality of the
network services are always of paramount importance.
As a consultant considering the above mentioned additional requirements/constraints
and part of your entire work, you are required to provide:

Deliverables
1. A troubleshooting, backup and fault tolerance strategy design and
implementation report.
[Assessment Criteria: 2.a]
2. A guideline for network health monitoring and analyzing highlighting the
network monitoring tools and techniques to be used for the smooth operation.
[Assessment Criteria: 2.b]
3. A design and implementation report to provide connectivity solutions
incorporating Linux based file server and Windows clients.
[Assessment Criteria: 2.c, 2.d]

Case Study/Background Info Part 3

Assessment

As described in Part 1

Description of problem to be solved

UWS also promises to provide access to its network resources to its beneficiaries from
remote locations (off-site) and thus the system needs to be highly secured.
Furthermore, UWS web based system provides the customers a facility to make
financial transactions (placing and paying orders). Ensuring such a confidential
information gathering from a web application is a great challenge so implementing
certificate services in the server is one of the ways to ensure secure transaction.
As a consultant considering the above mentioned additional requirements/constraints
and part of your entire work, you are required to provide:

Deliverables
1. A networking design and implementation report to connect to UWS network
providing access from home and outside (off-site) taking into consideration of
performance, cost-effectiveness, authentication and authorization mechanism,
monitoring by logging, security and access policies.
[Assessment Criteria: 3.a, 3.b]
2. A report, briefly outlining security threats to the modern networking and
justify what counteractive approaches to protect the network have been
undertaken while designing and implementing the entire network meeting all
the requirements mentioned above.
[Assessment Criteria: 3.c]
3. A design report outlining your implementation of the certificate services to
address above requirements and also justify the need of implementing IPSec to
encrypt data while communicating internally and externally.
[Assessment Criteria: 3.d]
