Assessment
United wholesale Scotland (UWS) was founded in 1980 and has its headquarter in
Edinburgh, Scotland.
The company is a Distribution company that deals in home produced house hold and
groceries products and have distribution in Glasgow. In 2008 the company acquired
another Distribution company (Clyde Importers) to take over the control of the Import
market. Clyde Importers import electronic products, toys and imported house hold
products. United wholesale has its own sales, marketing, credit control and IT
department (100 workstations and servers in total). The Clyde Importers has sales,
marketing and credit control (55 workstations and servers in total). The headquarters
of united wholesales is located in Edinburgh where everything is being coordinated
and consists of higher management and a corporate IT division which formulates the
management strategies and overall IT strategy and support/monitor the IT operations
of the individual departments (20 workstations and servers in total).
Because of the acquisitions in the previous years, UWS overall network is consisted
of hardware and software of various vendors, technology and age. The main problems
that appear during the everyday operations are often hardware breakdowns (old
hardware), low network QoS due to software and protocol incompatibility, limited
security features etc. The corporate IT department has planned a new network strategy
and plans to implement a new network infrastructure using Windows 2008 server
network housing its own DHCP, DNS, WINS, IIS (for hosting website & web-mail
services) and other domain services including print & file management. There is a
need to isolate the networking operation at various departments for security and
performance purposes (One possible way: constrain using logical networks. So, sales,
computing, marketing departments etc will be in different local subnet).
Assume that you have been hired as a network consultant to design and implement the
networking infrastructure as mentioned above.
Deliverables
1. Designing and implementing an automatic IP addressing mechanism
[Assessment Criteria: 1.a, 1.d]
2. Designing and implementing a domain naming strategy
[Assessment Criteria: 1.b, 1.c, 1.d]
Assessment
Deliverables
1. A troubleshooting, backup and fault tolerance strategy design and
implementation report.
[Assessment Criteria: 2.a]
2. A guideline for network health monitoring and analyzing highlighting the
network monitoring tools and techniques to be used for the smooth operation.
[Assessment Criteria: 2.b]
3. A design and implementation report to provide connectivity solutions
incorporating Linux based file server and Windows clients.
[Assessment Criteria: 2.c, 2.d]
Assessment
As described in Part 1
Deliverables
1. A networking design and implementation report to connect to UWS network
providing access from home and outside (off-site) taking into consideration of
performance, cost-effectiveness, authentication and authorization mechanism,
monitoring by logging, security and access policies.
[Assessment Criteria: 3.a, 3.b]
2. A report, briefly outlining security threats to the modern networking and
justify what counteractive approaches to protect the network have been
undertaken while designing and implementing the entire network meeting all
the requirements mentioned above.
[Assessment Criteria: 3.c]
3. A design report outlining your implementation of the certificate services to
address above requirements and also justify the need of implementing IPSec to
encrypt data while communicating internally and externally.
[Assessment Criteria: 3.d]
