QUESTIONS

1. Does the area of contact affect the coefficient of friction? Defend tour
answer.

First, we must know, what is coefficient of friction? Coefficient of friction ( ),

in general definition, is a dimensionless scalar value which describes the ratio of
friction between two bodies and force pressing them together. The coefficient of
friction depends on the materials used; for example, ice on steel has a low
coefficient of friction, while rubber on pavement has a high coefficient of friction). In
this definition, I could say that coefficient of friction ( ) is independent on area of
contact. Whether the surface is narrow or wide, the coefficient of friction will be the
same; however, variation of materials used will determine the changes on the value
of the friction coefficient.

2. Why is it necessary to observe uniform motion of the block in each

procedure of the experiment?

To observe uniform motion of the block in each procedure is necessary. It is

because, in general definition, where a body moves a constant speed or motion,
kinetic friction is essentially constant. One can determine coefficient of friction
between contact surfaces on one body which moves on uniform motion.

PROBLEMS

1. A 60-kg package rests on the level floor of warehouse. If the

coefficients of static and kinetic frictions are 0.56 and 0.37 respectively,
what horizontal pushing force is required to (a) start the package’s
motion? (b) slide the package across the floor at constant velocity?

2. The coefficient of friction between the sole of a shoe and a tile span
roof is 0.36. What minimum slope of the roof can start slipping?

3. A 1-kg of wood is pressed against a vertical wall ( s = 0.25) by a force

inclined 40º upward with respect to the vertical axis. Determine the
maximum force which can start the motion of the block.
