1.0

VESSELS AND TANKS

1.1

Vessel skirts, saddle supports and flanged connections need not be insulated.

1.2

Nameplates and code stamp plates shall not be covered.

1.3

Manway covers less than 2.0 m (6.5) above grade or platform shall be insulated with a
removable cover. Insulation shall be removable without damage to main insulation.

1.4

Expansion clips shall be provided on banding of insulation on large diameter vessels.

2.0

EXCHANGERS

2.1

Those heat exchangers on hot service shall be insulated. This does not apply to those
operating at or near ambient temperatures.

2.2

The area to be insulated shall include the exchanger flanges, channel and cover. These
covers shall be watertight and removable without damage to adjacent shell insulation.

2.3

Figures in table are process temperatures in degrees Celsius and are minimum
temperatures for use with thickness and design conditions stated.
When design
temperature falls between two (2) thickness columns, use the greater thickness.

3.0

PROCESS PIPING

3.1

Valves, flanges and unions shall not be insulated unless otherwise specified.

3.2

Steam traced valves and flanges shall be equipped with removable insulation.

4.0

STEAM PIPING

4.1

All steam lines shall be insulated.

4.2

Valves and flanges in steam service shall normally be insulated.

5.0

SOUR SERVICE
No sour service flanges or unions shall be insulated.

6.0

TURBINES AND PUMPS

Insulate in accordance with requirements for flanges, valves and fittings in hot service.

APPLICATION OF HOT INSULATION

7.1

Piping

Spec. No. 200-80A

1
Rev. No.
Rev. Date: 2012-03-22

Molded sectional insulation shall be applied in broken joint construction and secured with
16 ga. wire loops spaced on 230 mm (9.0) centers. On double layer construction, lap all
joints one-half (1/2) of each section between layers. Each layer shall be wired separately.
Joints shall be securely butted and all cracks, voids, etc., shall be filled with insulating
cement and pointed.
Insulation shall be jacketed with aluminum sheet complete with vapour barrier, rolled and
cut to fit curvature of insulation. A minimum lap of 50 mm (2.0) on longitudinal and end
joints shall be provided. The jacket shall be secured with screws on 150 mm (6.0)
centers.
7.2

Fittings
Where practical, on welded fittings mitered segments of adjacent pipe covering shall be cut
to fit, and secured with 16 ga. wire loops with a minimum of two (2) wires per section.
On the screwed fittings, the space shall be built with insulating cement up to the thickness
of adjacent pipe covering.
The above shall then be covered with preformed aluminum jacketing, complete with vapour
barrier.

7.3

Flanges and Valves

Flanges and valves on hot insulated lines operating at temperatures up to and including
250C shall be left un-insulated. When the line operating temperature is above 250C, or
in steam service, the flanges and valves shall be insulated with one (1) layer of preformed,
or cut and fitted, sectional pipe insulation of a removable and replaceable type.
Flanges, nozzles and manways on vessels in hot service only shall not be insulated unless
specifically requested by the Owner or required for personnel protection.
Hot service exchanger flanges, channel heads and floating head shell covers shall not be
insulated unless the operating temperature is above 125C, or as specified by the Owner.

7.4

Terminal Bevels
All pipe covering shall be beveled back on an approximate 45 angle and covered with
preformed aluminum jacketing, complete with vapour barrier.

7.5

Steam Tracing
Lines that are steam traced shall be insulated with large O.D. pipe insulation covering line
and tracer and finished in the same manner as straight pipe.

Rev. No.
Rev. Date: 2012-03-22

To the bare, clean surface of the vessel, block insulation shall be cut to fit vessel shell and
between insulation rings, secured with 19 mm (3/4) banks, machine stretched, and
fastened on approximately 230 mm (9.0) centers. All cracks or voids shall be pointed with
insulation cement.
Over the block insulation, corrugated aluminum jacketing (complete with vapour barrier)
shall be applied by the S clip methods. Each course of jacketing shall be secured as per
Clause 2.6, of Section A with a lapping of at least two (2) corrugations on vertical seams
and secured with sheet metal screws on approximately 150 mm (6.0) centers.
7.6.1.2

Heads
Block insulation shall be applied in the same manner as Shells, and secured with banks on
approximately 150 mm (6.0) centers. The top and bottom shall be covered with flat
aluminum jacketing, complete with vapour barrier.

7.6.2

Horizontal Vessels and Exchangers

Horizontal vessels and exchangers shall be insulated in the same manner as vertical
vessels for shell and heads, (and no S clips), shall be used to finish vessel sides and
heads. All seams shall be lapped at least 75 mm (3.0) and secured with sheet metal
screws, banking as specified under jacketing, sheet metal screws shall be omitted at
circumferential seams to allow for expansion.
