Grade: 3rd A
Lesson: Telling the time
School subjects

Textbook: Set Sail! 3

Lesson aims:
1. To use correctly grammar, spelling and punctuation.
2. To use oclock, half past, quarter to, quarter past, to, past when
telling the time.
3. To match the pictures with the labels.
4. To identify the school subjects.

Materials: Blackboard, posters, worksheets, flashcards, blackboard, a ball, pictures.

Assumptions: most of the vocabulary to be taught is already known to my students


Anticipated problems: Some students might need further help and extra indications
in solving the tasks and they may also need some of these indications to be given in
Romanian.

STAGES OF THE LESSON. PROCEDURE

ACTIVITY 1: WARM-UP
Aim: To create a pleasant atmosphere and to relax the Ss.
Procedure:
Interaction
1. The teacher greets the pupils and
asks them a few ordinary questions
(Who is on duty today?/What day is today?/
How are you today?/Whats the weather like today?).
2. The teacher asks them about their homework
and checks their notebooks.
3. The pupils read their homework while the
other classmates pay attention in order to correct
them if necessary.
4.
Passing a ball from one student
to another the teacher asks the students
to introduce themselves and say their favourite number
and the day of the week.

ACTIVITY 2: LEAD-IN
Aim: To identify the school subjects and to match the labels with the pictures.
Procedure:
Interaction:
1. The teacher tells them that
they are having a new lesson in which they will
practice telling the time and the school subjects.
The teacher writes the title of the lesson on the
blackboard and the students copy it in their notebooks.
2. The teacher uses pictures and labels
of the school subjects in order to revise them.
3. Ss come to the blackboard and stick the
labels for each school subject.

4. The teacher introduces half, quarter, oclock


when telling the time and gives some examples for different
situations.

5. The teacher asks children about the subjects
they like (Whats your favourite subject?

Do you like Maths?) and about how to tell


time in English. The students have to tell
the time of certain subjects in a school day.

7. The teacher helps them if necessary and
gives feedback.
ACTIVITY 3: PRACTICE
Aim: To use oclock, half past, quarter to, quarter past, to, past when telling
the time.
Procedure:
Interaction:
1. The teacher proposes an activity where
the children have to tell the time. On the desk,
the teacher has some flashcards which contain
pictures with clocks that show different times.

picture and tell the time.

ACTIVITY 4: SPEAKING AND WRITING

Individually

Aim: To encourage communication.


Procedure:
Interaction:
1. For this activity the students are
divided in groups. Each group has a
different task, they have to make timetables
on the following topics:

Pair Work

G 1: Todays timetable
G 2 : My ideal timetable
G 3 : The easiest timetable
G 4 : The most difficult timetable
2. The teacher gives them worksheets and
labels with the names of the subjects and students
have to choose and write in order to fulfill the task.
At the end of the activity each group has to
display and describe the timetable.
EVALUATION: The teacher appreciates the students effort and thanks for the
collaboration.
HOMEWORK: The students are asked to do ex. 1 page 82.
