These instruments are for measuring earth

temperature on the depths of 2, 5, 10 and 20
cm. On the alcohol bulb a straight, vertical shaft
is connected, of which the length corresponds with the
chosen measuring depth. For easy reading the reading
section above the surface is placed in a 85 angle. The
thermometer also registers the minimum temperature.
To prevent overdistillation of the alcohol the thermometer has to be placed in the shadow.

Earth thermometers model 1078 and 1079 are for larger

depths: 50 and 100 cm. The thermometer, with a larger
alcohol bulb, is placed at the far end of a plastic pole.
The pole has to be pulled upwards for reading.

Ground thermometers

The reservoir is being protected bij a corrosion resistant

hood. For protection and conduction of the thermometer
into the ground a plastic tube is used. The upper protection hood prevents air flows within the thermometer
and water penetration.
By using corrosion and humidity resistant materials the
thermometers have a long life expectancy.

As the air temperature drops, the liquid and marker

move down the thermometer tube. At minimum temperature, the liquid and the marker stop moving; as
the temperature starts to rise, the liquid moves back
up the tube, but the marker remains stationary. Thus
the level of the marker represents the minimum temperature.
The minimum thermometer must be held horizontally
in order to work properly. To reset it, the thermometer
is simply tipped upside down. Scientists who study
the weather use this special thermometer to measure
daily minimum temperatures.

For the determination of the minimum temperature on foot

height a grass minimum thermometer is placed above the
grass (2..12cm). It is important to protect the thermometer
against solar radiation.
A complete set contains a minimum thermometer and a radiation plate with holder. The measuring height is meethoogte
is adjustable between 2 and12 cm.
