A solid piece of aluminum (51.0 g) was added to a solution of sodium hydroxide

(84.1 g) in water. A balanced equation for this reaction is shown below:
2 NaOH(aq) + 2 Al(s) + 2 H2O 2 NaAlO2(aq) + 3 H2(g)

9.

(a)

remains?

(c)

What mass of hydrogen gas is produced?

Concentrated hydrochloric acid is one of top synthetic chemicals in North

America with a production of approximately 5 billion kilograms per year.
Commercial concentrated hydrochloric acid contains 38% HCl by weight and has a
density of 1.19 g cm-3.
(a)
What mass of HCl is contained in 1 L of commercial acid?
(b)

10.

11.

What is the molarity of the acid?

Dimethylhydrazine, (CH3)2NNH2, was used as a fuel for the Apollo Lunar

descent module, with N2O4 as the oxidant. The products of the reaction are H2O,
N2 and CO2.
(a)

Give a balanced equation for the combustion of dimethylhydrazine in

dinitrogen tetraoxide.

(b)

If 150 kg of (CH3)2NNH2 are mixed with 460 kg of N2O4, what is the

theoretical yield of N2 gas?

(c)

When 15 kg of dimethylhydrazine is burned in 46 kg of N2 O4, 16 kg of N2

is produced. Calculate the % yield of nitrogen.

(d)

If a 30 kg yield of nitrogen gas represents a 68% yield, what weight of

N2O4 was consumed in the reaction?

A dilute solution of sulfuric acid (12 mL) was treated with an excess of an aqueous
barium chloride solution. The resulting precipitate weighed 0.2762 g. What is the
molarity of the sulfuric acid used?

A solid sample of mass 0.950 g contains strontium chloride and inert impurities. It
is dissolved in water and treated with 25.00 mL of 0.25 M aqueous solution of
AgNO3 to afford a precipitate of silver(I) chloride. The excess aqueous silver
nitrate is titrated with 8.00 mL of 0.210 M potassium thiocyanate (KSCN)
according to the reaction:
AgNO3 (aq) + KSCN (aq) AgSCN(s) + KNO3(aq)
Determine the mass percentage of strontium chloride in the original sample.

13.

A 0.500 g sample of impure limestone, containing calcium carbonate and inert

impurities, is treated with 10.00 mL of aqueous H2SO4 (0.500 M). The following
reaction is observed.
H2SO4 (aq) + CaCO3 (s) CaSO4 (s) + CO2 (g) + H2O (l)
After the solution was boiled to remove dissolved CO2, the excess H2SO4(aq) was
titrated to the second endpoint with 13.40 mL of 0.25 M NaOH:
H2SO4 (aq) + 2 NaOH (aq) Na2SO4 (aq) + 2 H2O (l)
What is the mass percentage of CaCO3 (s) in the original limestone sample?
