ownpurposesandconventions.Currently,thereisnoconsensuswithinthewritingcommunityregardingthenumberandcompositionoffictionwriting
modesandtheiruses.Somewritingmodessuggestedincludeaction,dialogue,thoughts,summary,scene,description,background,expositionand

summarization,descriptionisoneofthemostwidelyrecognizedofthefictionwritingmodes.Descriptionismorethantheamassingofdetails,itis
bringingascenetolifebycarefullychoosingandarrangingwordsandphrasestoproducethedesiredeffect.[4]

Exposition

Summarization,ornarrativesummary,condenseseventstoconvey,ratherthantoshow,whathappenswithinastory.[6]The"tell"intheaxiom"Show,

Recollection
Recollectionisthefictionwritingmodewherebyacharacterremembersadetailorevent.Itplaysavitalroleinconveyingbackstorybyallowingwriters
toconveyinformationfromearlierinthestoryorfrombeforethebeginningofthestory.Althoughrecollectionisnotwidelyrecognizedasadistinct
modeoffictionwriting,itisacommontool.Recollectioncouldbeconsideredasubsetofintrospection,butitsroleindevelopingbackstoryseparatesit
fromtheotherthoughtsofacharacter.Effectivepresentationofrecollectionhasitsownuniqueissuesandchallenges.Forexample,timingarecollection
toavoidimplausibleseemingmemories(suchaswhenacharactermustmakeakeydecision)canbedifficult,andshouldbepromptedbyarecentplot

Sensation
Sensationisusedtoportrayacharacter'sperceptions.Itcanhelpdrawthereaderinbyconveyingtheactualsensationsofthingscomprisingthestory,
breathinglifeintoitsphysicalworld.[15][16]Sincethereaderhasexperiencedonlyaportionofthesensationsexperiencedbythecharacter,theauthor
aimstoeitherprovokerecallfromthereader,orconveytheexperience,[17]drawingthereaderinandmaintaininginterestinthestory.[18]

Emotion
Thefictionwritingmodeofemotionconveysthefeelingsofthecharacter,andisavitalcomponentofcreativewriting.[19]Connectingthecharacterto
hisownemotionsallowstheauthortoconnectwiththereaderonanemotionallevel.[20][21]
