Shell

Drill on Steroids Mike Dunlap

-3-on-3 Cutthroat. Teams on the baseline waiting to come onto the court.
Defensive Cutthroat: team coming on offense trying to earn their
way onto D
Offensive Cutthroat: team coming on defense trying to earn their
way onto O

-Cutthroat
Adds time & score aspect to shell to keep the players interest levels
up.
Allows you to teach detail

-Let the whistle
Determine the tempo of the drill (quick! Coach blows whistle, explains
the transgression and a new team comes on)
Reward the behavior you want
Teach to the emphasis

-The shorter the game/drill, the more that there is on the line
How often in practice are you getting to the Death Point? Its on you,
as the coach, to make your players comfortable there. Keep putting
them in those spots. Get your guys Death Moment reps.
Never liked drills that worked themselves into long determinations.
The smaller the score, the more your players have a feeling of
pressure.
You want to replicate that last possession of a game as many times as
you can in a practice.

-Sequence:
Dry Run (no D, teach to the advantage/the point youre emphasizingbuild
up that conditioned response)
Add Dummy D (want O to feel what its like for D to be next to them)
Live (lets go)

-Cutthroat is played 1 side of the floor. Offense has 4 rules:
1. No dribble
2. Triple threat on every catch
3. Rim cut on all passes
4. Communication (I tell my
teammate what Im doing)

-My definition of playing hard is concentrating hard (many coaches/players think
its playing fastwork harder doesnt mean work faster)

-Defense is simpler than we make it. There are 2 rules:

1. Guard the ball
2. Be in a position to help your
teammates

High Hole / Low Hole

On penetration

Low Hole steps outside the paint to stop ball
High hole drops to corner of the board

-Organize games in your practice where you can insert your teaching. Engineer your
games to what you want to be taught. Examples
Want to work on passing?
Scrimmageextra point for an assist
Want to teach squaring up? Play
cutthroat and any time a player
catches it and doesnt square
upturnover

-After competitions: Pod Up
What could you have done better?
Ive learned a ton from these. My players have taught me more than Ive
taught them.

You thought about

yourself one pass in.
Well get to self later

The process is working.

The finish will come.

Anytime a guy
curls off your
screen, beg for
the ball by
taking 2-3 steps
towards it.

Hey screener: drop your

rump, get wider and
spread your back

Dont watch the

ball, watch your
defender. Thats
the guy you need
to get away
from.

And by never I
mean not for a long
time. Think about
the spirit of the
rulenot literally.

Slow the hell down!

Slow for 10, fast for 2
