hese are questions we need to stop

and ask ourselves. In our fast-paced
world we get caught up in worrying
about what other people think of us. Some
are competitive for the wrong reasons, especially in a bureaucratic work environment.
A good way to get ahead is to step on others
to accomplish that goal. Its sad, but it works.
But this is not what its all about.
What is really most important in life?
Focus on that. Everyone should strive
to love what they do, even in instances
where certain tasks are repetitive, tedious
and time consuming. Find the positive
in whatever you do and give it your best.
Have a good attitude no matter what.
Make it a priority each day to spend time
doing the thing that gives you joy. I am
passionate about teaching others how to take
better care of themselves through physical
fitness and the mind body connection no
matter what the activity. It may just be proper
alignment and good posture and breathing.
We are our own most valuable resource.
Taking care of yourself isnt selfish. In fact, its
the greatest gift you can give your loved ones.
Opportunities to find and do things

that enforce our passions are everywhere.

We have so much valuable information to
share with each other. At the end of the
day make sure you feel good about yourself and your everyday accomplishments
whatever you feel like youve spent your
day doing making someones life a little
better including, especially, your family,
co-workers, friends and your own life.

Questions to ask yourself at the

end of the day:
Did I have a positive impact on the
lives of others?
Do I feel empowered and good about
me?
Things may not have turned out as
expected. Im still good with me.
Tomorrow is another day.

Bucket
bliss

By Kirsty Blattner

his is a topic I presented in September at the Dream Bank downtown. This title was created when I
thought about my dreams in life, my goals
and what brought me bliss. As a life and
health coach I meet clients that have incredible ideas, goals and dreams. They are seeing
me as a coach because their bliss has gone
off track, been pushed aside or shelved until
perfect opportunities align. I hear things
like, When I retire. and When the kids
move out of the home. One of my favorites
is, Well when I win the lottery. I feel such
a deep connection with my clients as I have
told myself similar things in life. I felt that it
was necessary to have everything lined up
in some sort of linear process. It felt unsafe
on some level to allow myself to focus on
my dreams, goals and deep aspirations.
Here is what life, continued education,
degrees, training and books have taught me:

The perfect time to start

working toward your goals,
dreams and bucket list is now!

I know for some people this may seem

irresponsible, unrealistic or even threatening on some level. I get it. I feel the same
resistance when my coach allows me to
see my limited beliefs and shifts me from
getting all up in my own business to a place
of calm, inspiration and reframe. Here is
the secret: there are ways that you, despite
your life situation, money, connections
www.naturespathways.com

or any other thing, can give your dreams

wings. When you feel like you have wings
and are flying, its exciting, exhilarating
and a sense of freedom may wash over you.
This is what happens when you focus, place
emphasis on and take steps to create your
dream life. What if it only took 5 minutes a
day to keep your dream fire stoked? Would
you commit to that? What would be the
result of 5 minutes a day for a month?
We all have bio-individuality, which
means what works for one person may not
work for another. Figure out the perfect fit
for you. Is it 10 minutes three times a week
or 1 minute daily? Does it look more like a
2-hour block on the weekend or a half hour
ritual in the morning for five days a week?
When you have a time period blocked
out, schedule it! If its not in your planner,
phone or wherever you place important
meetings, it wont be given priority.
Now you have some carved out time per
week that you will devote to your dream
life coming to fruition. Hmm, what is your
dream life? What does it look like? How
does it feel? Has it changed over the years?
Maybe this is the first step for you defining what your dreams are and placing them
in a rough timeline, or at least dividing them
into long-term and short-term categories.
Some of you believe you are creative
beings and you are visually motivated.
Others may see themselves in a different
light. Consider what is most motivating,

spectacular and in alignment with you

and track your dream life progress in that
manner. Maybe this looks like a spreadsheet, decoupaged delight or a leather
bound journal. Whatever speaks to you the
most, go with that. Embrace it and enjoy
the journey. Now you have time carved
out, a definition of your dream life, a rough
timeline and a way to track, record and feel
inspired to plan your dream life odyssey!
You are unique, and so is your dream
life design. You get to structure what works
best for you. Is it setting weekly or monthly
goals? Is it placing information in a folder
or box? Is it making a list of people to do
informational interviews with? Whatever
it is, get started NOW! Feel the power of
commitment and structure unique to you.
Feel into the ignition that focus brings
and experience delight with serendipitous
moments and awesome coincidences!
Let me know how your journey is
unfolding and if I can be of assistance to
you living the life of your dreams.

Bless
the pets!

By Katie Hilst, DVM

unday, Oct. 4 is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi Day or

Blessing the Animals Day. What is a blessing? Is it money,
clothes, a fancy car or house? In the Bible a blessing is
depicted as a mark of Gods relationship with a person, and in the
scriptures the act of blessing means the imparting of power or life.
In the dictionary the definition of bless is to invoke divine favor
upon, ask God to look favorably upon, ask for care and protection, grace with, and to provide someone with something good
and desirable. To confer a special favor, mercy or gift.

Blessing is about relationships. Not just any relationship, but

a relationship that is a gift and brings us joy and happiness. We
are in a relationships with our pets, and it is a relationship that is
constant and ever-present. Our pets are there for us every day, in
our homes, our cars, and our beds. They often travel with us on
vacation, and sometimes go to work with us. They are a constant
source of love and companionship. Pets give us their attention,
friendship and trust without reservation. They make us laugh
with their antics, and comfort us when we are hurting. We delight
in our animal friends, and respect and care for them. We take
responsibility for our pets, and serve their needs so that we may
live, love and thrive together.
This blessing, or relationship, comes with responsibilities. When
we are blessed by our pets, we feel good and loved, and we should
let that joy flow outward to others in need. Our responsibility to
help others (human or animal) is at its highest when we are blessed
and happy. The funny thing about giving support to those in need
is that it not only helps them, but makes us feel better too! When
we help others, sometimes our own problems seem smaller, more
manageable and they resolve themselves. The act of helping others
helps ourselves we will receive more blessings by helping others
(pet or person) and being in relationships with them.
Our pets spend their love and their lives devoted to us. They
bless us every day we spend with them. By blessing us with their
love, they give us the responsibility to help others. On Sunday,
Oct. 4 let us cherish and remember the relationships in life not
the money, clothes, fancy house or cars. The blessing is the act of
a relationship, and caring love that goes into building the relationship. We are blessed by the pets and people around us. They
impart power and life with their love and relationships with us.

Finding
significance in
difficult times
A eulogy for my brother Joseph

By Cecilia Farran

Recently my youngest brother passed away very unexpectedly.

Excerpts from my eulogy below give example of how meaning can
be gained in difficult times.

uesday, July 28. My brother John. His voice on the phone.

His words drop unbearably heavy, for that is the only way
the first news of death can come: so heavy. And the hours
drag heavy, long and lost. Toward days end I finally become clear
on what I need to do.
Joseph was my brother, a farmer, the son of a farmer. We had all
been together just two days before celebrating one hundred years
of farm stewardship. But he was also a pilot and when I ask where
I shall find his soul at peace, I know where I am to go: The Lone
Rock Tri-County Airport. Joe would fly in there on visits.
I bike the miles to the airport to sit alone under the open skies,
perhaps to find him. The late afternoon is silent. The place is
deserted. The sun casts shadows as the distant hills turn a hazed
blue. In this holy place I hold vigil. I scan the sky. I wait.
And then in the heat of the afternoon, I hear a distant droning to
the east. One small plane circles and lowers itself out of the sky and
touches down. It taxies toward me, never cutting its speed as if to
deliver a message almost to my lap. I find it exhilarating. And at the last
possible moment, as I knew he would, in a dance of perfect control,
he turns the plane toward the white tanks under the red Phillips sign.
A crop duster there to refuel, he climbs from the plane, stretching his legs as he walks to the fuel tanks. He reels out the grounding line and returns to unspool the fuel hose. He is working,
mindless of me and doing what pilots do. I watch in awed reverence as well as I can. I dont know if it is that I have blurred my
eyes against the suns glare or that my eyes are blurred with tears,
but I do not see him, this stranger, I see my brother Joe going
through the all-familiar motions of a pilot tending to his plane. I
watch. I am grateful for what is unfolding before me. Finished, he
recoils the hose and unsnaps the thin, grounding line and washes
the windshield.
Then, a well-practiced skip up to the wing, a swing into the
cockpit, engine roaring, he turns the plane to leave. But before
www.naturespathways.com

Joseph R. Geason with vulture feather

he does we exchange a glance, a nod, a two-finger wave. He taxies
back to the end of the field.
How can he know what this visit has given me, for in his simple
tasks I see the simple tasks of life when we no longer need to think, but
we can, if we are mindful, drop into a bigger place, a place as big as the
skies. In his nod and parting wave he signifies a brotherhood of these
skies that Joe would understand. My tears fall. Goodbye, brother Joe.
As the plane takes off I shade my eyes from the glare. As it becomes
a speck in the west, another speck appears overhead: a vulture riding
the currents above me. In native cultures the vulture represents
rebirth, as guardians of deaths mysteries, of new vision, of endless
flight without power. They soar motionless on the wind for hours.
You, Joe, are no longer in the cockpit of a plane, but on the wide wings
of this bird on the currents of thin air. As it tips a nod to me, this bird
gives a fitting tribute for a man whose spirit loved the sky.
Your body will be enfolded by the good and solid earth, the realm
of farmers, but your spirit will take off with every small plane and
soar with every large bird riding the open sky. There is an unraveling in the fabric of family now, the empty place takes some getting
used to. It is as open as the sky, though. May we lift our hearts into
it. Hats off to you, Joe, for us you have charted the heavens. Hats
off to you.
Later, at his graveside, I lay a vulture feather upon Joes casket in
a final farewell. The circle of life fulfilled.

but will also repair and restore damage already done.
Wrinkles are caused by a few factors. Mayo Clinic in Rochester,
Minnesota cites four main factors to aging skin. As we age, the
natural oils that keep our skin looking healthy and young begin to
decrease. The absence of these natural oils makes the skin appear
drier, while the fat in deeper layers of the skin begins to diminish
leaving the look of sagging skin and pronounced lines. Repeated
exposure to ultraviolet rays also breaks down the collagen, which
gives our skin its elasticity making it less strong and flexible. This
loss of collagen causes repeated facial expressions to leave their
mark as smile lines, frown lines and squinting begins to form
deep grooves beneath the skin. Without its youthful bounce, the
skin above forms to the grooves and creates wrinkles. And finally,
the most avoidable cause of aging skin is smoking, which robs
the skin of oxygen and accelerates the aging process far sooner in
those who smoke than those who do not.
Despite the above factors that are unavoidable, there are a few
things we can incorporate into our weekly or daily routines to
help prevent wrinkles.
Wash your face daily. Exfoliate twice weekly. Our skin sheds
30,000 to 40,000 cells every minute. This is incomprehensible, but
most of the dust in your house is dead skin cells. Without exfoliation these dead skin cells clog our pores rapidly leaving our skin
dull, dry looking and unable to breath. Exfoliate twice weekly and
you will see the glow return with a more youthful appearance.
While there are many products to purchase or formulas you
can make at home to assist in exfoliation, problematic skin should
avoid products with oils. Those who suffer from acne can benefit
from keeping the skin extra clean but most acne sufferers have
oily skin and adding to it can prevent the acne from healing. If you
www.naturespathways.com

follow this regular routine you will see less pronounced wrinkles,
a brighter complexion and your pores minimized.
Now that your skin is clean, keep it moisturized inside and out.
Drink plenty of water to rid your body of toxins and keep your
skin plump while you use a good moisturizer with sun protection
to prevent exposure to ultra violet rays during the day.
Although it is tempting to just skip your nighttime routine
of cleansing and moisturizing, it is crucial. New skin production occurs between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. every single night. Night
cream is specially formulated with antioxidants to protect and
nourish your skin during this process.
With the vast selection of products on the market there are a few
standards to maintain when it comes to choosing the right ones
for your skin. Be a label reader. Antioxidants, or vitamin enriched
skin care products, are key ingredients to look for when choosing
the best skin, body and hair care products. Antioxidants protect
against free radicals, which break down your skin structure. Treat
your skin to organic products with the most natural ingredients.
For the healthiest looking skin become religious about these
routines. Choose moisturizers and products that are suited to
your skin type. Daily, first cleanse, use toner, and moisturize
with eye cream, face cream, night cream and then, exfoliate twice
weekly. Be good to your skin. Give yourself the treatment your
skin deserves.

Safe costumes
can prevent
Halloween
mishaps

illions of people celebrate Halloween every year.

Borrowed or adapted from a few different festivals
that once took place in Europe, Halloween has origins
in the Roman Feralia festival, the Celtic summers end festival
Samhain and the Catholic All Saints Day.
Trick-or-treating is a significant part of the Halloween festivities, but for many people, the real delight is choosing a costume.
The right costume is not only one that suits the spirit of Halloween, but also one thats safe. The Prevention First Organization
says that collisions with cars, eye injuries from sharp objects and
burns from flammable costumes account for the most youth
emergency room visits on Halloween. Just how does one create
a safe costume?

Consider these pointers when preparing for the

arrival of October 31:

Rely on flashlights and reflective tape to make trick-or-treaters

more visible during evening walks. The reflective tape can be
incorporated right into the costume design.

Choose hats and face paints in lieu of masks. Masks can block a

childs vision and impede a youngsters ability to check for traffic.

Ensure that costumes do not drag on the floor, as costumes

that are too long can pose a tripping hazard.

Have children wear comfortable, flat shoes to reduce the risk

of tripping or falls.

Make sure children walk on sidewalks and well-lit paths.

They also should avoid darting out into the street to run to
another home.
Choose soft, flexible costume props whenever possible. Make
sure the props, such as swords, are not sharp or too long.
Make sure costumes and accessories are made with flameresistant materials.
Use glow sticks or battery-powered LED lights instead of lit
candles for costumes and decorations.
Trick or treat in groups with other parent chaperones so the
adults can be extra diligent in their efforts to keep children

Happiness
habit: The
power of I
dont

By Lysianne Unruh

even years ago, my mysterious health issues were finally

identified as celiac disease. Believe me when I tell you I
laid on the floor and cried as I thought, I cant eat warm,
chewy sourdough; I cant eat golden, flaky croissants; I cant eat
my moms Christmas cookies and the list went on.
And, yet, my desire to feel better outweighed my despair over losing
out on a hugely satisfying food group. Within a few short months, I
was seeing the direct result of a gluten-free diet; I felt better and stronger than I ever had as my health issues radically diminished.*
A trip to Paris a few years ago highlighted my shift in perspective.
While I made a point to browse the gorgeous pastry shop windows
and even stepped inside shops to simply breathe in the luscious scent
of freshly baked baguettes, there was no real, significant craving.
I had made the huge shift from a victimized stance of I cant eat
croissants to a much more powerful stance of I dont eat croissants. Choosing to not eat gluten for the sake of my health had
become a bright line I did not and still do not cross.

I cant versus I dont

Research continues to demonstrate how the power of the words

we use impacts our behavior. A study published in the Journal of
Consumer Research affirms this truth.
During an experiment, one group was instructed to use the
phrase I dont to refuse offers of unhealthy food as in, I dont
eat ice cream while others used the phrase I cant. When
participants finished the study, they were allowed to choose either
a chocolate bar or a granola bar. Of the I dont group, 64 percent
chose the healthier option, versus 39 percent of the I cant group.
The authors of the study suggest the words I dont are empowering because they help us frame our decisions from a clear sense
of self, as in this is who I am versus I cant, which suggests a
barrier that prevents a particular action.
While the words I cant have us feeling at the effect of a decision
weve made, the words I dont align us with our values. I dont
www.naturespathways.com

empowers us to own the decision weve made by providing a clear

bright line we wont cross. For example, I dont gossip; I dont skip
my morning workout; I dont watch TV during the week.

I do and I dont

When we choose a particular goal, whether it is to make better,

healthier food choices; to exercise 3 days a week; to write a novel;
to get organized, or carve out quality me time, or anything else
on our life lists, we are essentially saying I do.
Hand in hand, along with I do is the invariable temptation or
resistance. Will you be at the effect of your decision or will you
powerfully own it by knowing what you will and wont do?
Just now, while writing this article, I found myself staring at
the chocolate chips in the pantry. I gently reminded myself I dont
snack between meals. It was much easier than to turn my focus
to what it was I needed: a short break from the computer. A few
stretches worked just as well as a not necessary snack.
What will be on your I dont list, which will help you support
your commitment? It doesnt have to be a long, lengthy list for it
to be effective.
Id love to hear about your I dont strategy, the one that will
help you remain committed to the I do of your new habit or
different lifestyle goal.
*Not to worry, this is not a manifesto against gluten or carbs;
I do not advocate a gluten-free diet over any other food plan.

Lesser-known
symptoms of
breast
cancer

ublic perception that breast cancer is only identified by

lumps detected through self-examination or routine
mammography may prevent thousands of women from
receiving an early diagnosis and the care they need. Although
lumps are the most common symptom associated with the
disease, women should recognize that breast cancer can produce
additional symptoms.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure, one of the premier organizations for breast cancer research, advocacy and treatment, advises
that the warning signs for breast cancer are not the same for all
women (or men). Various changes in the breast and body can
occur, including the following conditions.
BREAST-SIZE CHANGES: Many left and right breasts are not

completely symmetrical, and women familiar with their bodies

know that one breast is often slightly larger than the other.
However, breast-size changes that occur out of the blue may be
indicative of a medical problem.
SKIN RASH OR REDNESS: Women who are breastfeeding can

experience a rash on the breasts from an infection of breast tissue.

But those who are not breastfeeding should be evaluated by a
doctor if redness, irritation or rash appears.

NIPPLE CHANGES: Nipple discharge that starts suddenly and

is not associated with breastfeeding can be indicative of cancer.

Other changes to the nipples, such as pulling in of the nipple
(inversion) or itchy, scaling skin on the nipple, should be brought
to the attention of a doctor.
CHANGES TO THE SKIN: Dimpling of the skin, peeling,

flaking, or scaling skin can be a cause for concern as well.

LUMPS ELSEWHERE: Cancerous tumors may not only be felt in

the breasts. Breast cancer can spread to the lymph nodes around
the breasts, and lumps may be felt under the arms.

UNEXPLAINED PAIN: The Mayo Clinic advises that less than

10 percent of people diagnosed with breast cancer report pain as

a symptom. But unexplained pain in an area of the breast should
not be ignored. Breast pain that does not go away and seems to
involve one area of the breast should be checked.
FATIGUE: General cancer symptoms can include unusual fatigue

and unexplained weight loss. These symptoms should not be left

unchecked.
One of the best things women and men can do is to familiarize themselves with their bodies so they will be more capable of
pinpointing any irregularities that may develop. Individuals can
routinely look at their breasts and inspect for subtle changes.
But remember that hormonal breast changes occur during the
menstrual cycle, so its best to be familiar with how breasts look
and feel both during and after menstruation.

Organic skin
care
advice

By Angela Kowieski

ave you ever thought that you could improve the quality
of your skin with a serum? By combining some key
ingredients I have been able to find amazing results for
your skin, body and hair by using safer, organic-based treatments
opposed to harsh, toxic and chemical-filled skin care products
that you may find in your local stores. Here are some of the key
ingredients I like to use and why they are beneficial to all!

A carrot a day to keep the wrinkles away!

Certified organic carrot seed essential oil
Carrot seed essential oil is another awesome antioxidant for
the skin. It fights off those free radicals that cause wrinkles and
damage the skin with its large amounts of vitamin A and carotene.
These antioxidants are great for protecting your skin from signs
of aging, keeping your hair from turning white, your joints from
stiffening, your muscles from weakening and your eyesight from
declining. Carrot seed is also a great cytophylactic, which means
it stimulates the growth of new tissues and their cells. This helps
to keep the skin toned and firm, preventing sagging or drooping.

Used by the Hindu gods and goddesses!

Certified organic sandalwood essential oil
If the gods used it, why wouldnt we? Sandalwood has been
known for its amazing properties as an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antiphlogistic, antispasmodic, astringent, cicatrisant, carminative, diuretic, disinfectant, emollient, expectorant, hypotensive, memory booster, sedative and tonic substance. With those
wonderful characteristics, sandalwood is great for all skin types,
especially for aging skin. It helps to tighten skin, reduce swelling,

and aids in healing scars and age spots. Sandalwood has sedative
qualities, which help mentally to induce relaxation, calmness,
concentration, inner vision and positive thoughts. Sandalwood
essential oil is beneficial for all skin types, especially anti-aging.

Pumpkins versus pimples

Pumpkin and pumpkin seed oil
Pumpkin, one of natures finest hidden treasures for the skin,
can be beneficial for many skin types. Due to pumpkins vitaminrich and collagen-producing qualities, I see why it is one of the
main staples for many skin care lines. Pumpkin contains great

A brain that

good

By Dr. Laura Konopacki

eeing a loved one fall prey to the curse of addictions is a horrible experience. Simply put, addiction is compulsive use of a chemical or activity in
spite of negative consequences, explains Dr. Jay Holder,
a chiropractor who has led the way for natural treatment
of addictions.
Today, there are many options to help those who have lost
control over specific substances or behaviors. Chiropractic,
with its powerful and drug-free approach, is among the best to
consider. Lets see why and how.

What are addictions?

Addictions are defined as developing dependence on substances

or behaviors that are bad for us. Its all about losing control and
freedom of choice. When thinking about addictions, most people
think about substance abuse. But people can become addicted to

many other things, such as work, sex, gambling or even the Internet. Some people fall prey to addictions in their efforts to manage
pain the June 2015 issue of Time magazine reports that now,
4 out of 5 heroin addicts say they came to the drug from prescription painkillers.

A brain that cant feel good

There are many factors participating in the development of addictions and dependence, but one exciting model has emerged in
the last decade. Its called brain reward deficiency syndrome.
Essentially, scientists have been able to show that when your
brain is balanced, its able to produce its own chemicals that
make you feel rewarded and feel good. But if your brain is out of
balance, for genetic or environmental reasons, you can no longer
produce those same chemicals. Daily experiences dont reward
you anymore, you dont feel good and you start using external
substances or behaviors (addictions) to try and chase that feeling.

Feeling good starts in your spine

One of the most fascinating findings in recent addiction research

is that feeling good starts in the spine. Researchers have found
that there is no greater amount of receptors for our own feel-good
chemicals anywhere in the brain than in the posterior part of the
spinal cord, which is the first relay station for the information
traveling from our senses to our brain.

"There are many factors

participating in the
development of addictions
and dependence, but
one exciting model has
emerged in the last decade.
Its called brain reward
deficiency syndrome."
A spine that makes you feel good

The relationship between the spine and reward centers in the

brain is not just theoretical. Clinical studies have shown that
chiropractic care can really help people feel better, even more
so in individuals suffering from addictions. In a study published
in Molecular Psychiatry, scientists divided patients who were
chemically dependent and were attending a 30-day residential
program into 3 groups: usual addiction care only, usual addiction care and placebo chiropractic and usual addiction care and
real chiropractic care.
The results where astounding. 100 percent of the patients in the
chiropractic group completed the residential treatment (against
only 56 percent in the usual addiction care only group). This is
vital because individuals who complete a residential treatment
program are much less likely to relapse. The chiropractic care
group also had lower levels of anxiety. Moreover, only 9 percent
of the chiropractic group ever visited a nurse station, compared
to 48 percent for the usual addiction care group. Visits to the
nurse station are a sign of how bad withdrawal symptoms are.
The worse they are, the more patient seeks care with a nurse.

Self-care to help your brain feel good

Understanding the connection between adequate movement of

your spine and proper brain function is essential. Remember to
take frequent breaks from sitting stand up and stretch! Daily
movement and exercise that takes your spine through its FULL
range of motion, using all of the supporting muscles around it,
will help you be at your best.
Having chiropractic care as part of a comprehensive team
approach to addiction management is the best thing you can do
for any loved one who has fallen prey to this horrible condition.

in cellular turnover in the skin. This provides antioxidation to the

skin and gives a smoother, brighter appearance.
Pumpkin also contains acne fighting zinc. I have mentioned zinc
before in articles regarding treating acne internally, but now acne
sufferers can help to treat those problem areas topically and naturally.
The seeds of pumpkin contain the most zinc, which aid in regulating hormone levels and the production of oil. The seeds contain the
essential fatty acids and vitamin E that is needed to create a protective
barrier on the skin, which assists in the healing process.

Used by the ancient Egyptians, Mayans and

Native Americans for its healing properties!
Rosehip seed oil
Another great skin toning, free radical fighting oil is rosehip
seed oil. Due to all of the great essential fatty acids combined with
vitamin C and natural free radical-fighting antioxidants, rosehip
seed oil will help those who would like to correct dark spots and
hydrate dry, itchy skin, all while reducing scars and fine lines.
Rosehip seed oil also inhibits properties of lycopene, which rejuvenate and repair the skins surface, restore elasticity and protect
against sun and pollution damage that can lead to fine lines. So
this amazing oil is beneficial for those who may be suffering with
acne, eczema, or would like a natural anti-aging treatment for
their skin.

Blue is better!
Certified organic blue chamomile
Blue chamomile essential oil has a high content of azulene,
hence the blue color. Azulenes anti-inflammatory properties are
great for treating skin issues. I love incorporating blue chamomile in the under eye area to help to relieve puffy or dark areas
by draining the area from pooled blood. Blue chamomile is also
known for its ability to alleviate skin conditions like psoriasis,
acne and eczema. Mentally, it eases tension, anxiety, anger and
fear. With all of blue chamomiles healing qualities, this all-in-one
delight is great for all!

increasingly common neurodevelopmental disorder.
Millions of Americans are affected by symptoms related to
autism, inattention and hyperactivity. According to the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 68 children
have been diagnosed with ASD. Boys are more likely than girls
to develop ASD or ADHD. Diagnosis of ADHD has increased by
5 percent each year since 2003. Play Attention, a type of brain
training, is an extremely promising emerging therapy for ADHD
and ASD.
www.naturespathways.com

Neuroscientist Dr. Barry Sterman launched the field of neurofeedback in the late 1960s. His research has been used to help
people train their brains to overcome ADHD and ASD.
Since the early 1990s NASA has incorporated neurofeedback
with simulator training for astronauts. By incorporating neurofeedback astronauts are taught to increase attention in order to
reduce the risk of accidents from lack of concentration. The Play
Attention program was inspired by NASAs research.
Continuing research has shown that when individuals have
difficulty paying attention they are far more likely to struggle at
work and in academic settings, creating poor performance and
increased study time.
Play Attention is a natural, noninvasive alternative to treat the
root cause or symptoms of the neurodevelopmental disorder,
without drugs. It is a complete skill building protocol that specifically addresses symptoms by strengthening neural networks.
Through consistent and structured training individuals increase
their ability to focus at will, follow directions, filter out distractions and control behaviors that could hinder success.
The program helps uncover and correct brain imbalances that
may lead to symptoms of disorders such as ASD, ADD/ADHD,
dyslexia and more. It is a comprehensive set of programs that
focuses on attention stamina, time on task, discriminatory auditory and visual processing, visual tracking, motor skills, shortterm memory sequencing, visual working memory and encompasses behavioral shaping.
The effects of brain training can often be observed within the

first few sessions. Brain training is a lengthy process but is important to help individuals with ASD or ADHD to achieve their
optimal level of performance and lessen the symptoms associated with these disorders. Consistency is needed for the changes
to be permanent. According to Dr. Jean Guertin, Ph.D., This is
the first behavior-based system that helps the child to understand
and control both positive and negative habits on their own. Play
Attention makes attention concrete and controllable.
Everyone can benefit from Play Attention to increase their
attention skills. Every person with ADHD, ASD or learning
disabilities should have the opportunity to expand their mental
horizons and build new brain connections with Play Attention.

What is

with stressed flexible parts, as well as

structures that are
both
compressed
and stretched at the
same time. A familiar
example of a tensegrity structure is a tent.
The poles are solid,
compressed and prestressed, and the flexible fabric limits the
shape, position, and
direction that the
structure can assume.
Over the past 30+
years tensegrity is
a concept that has become profoundly
important in anatomy and physiology,
and it offers insight into how osteopathy
as well as other manual therapies work.
Lets begin by considering the musculoskeletal structure of the human body. The
rigid structures are obviously the bones
and cartilage, and the tensioned structures
include the skin, the muscles, tendons,
ligaments, membranes, and fascia. The
shape of the bones contributes to their
function. Pieces of a puzzle must at least

loosely fit together, but structural stability in the body only exists because of the
balance of forces keeping the rigid pieces
aligned with one another. Control of the
tensioning mechanisms, i.e. the muscle,
tendons and ligaments, is provided by the
neurological system. The nervous system
is constantly assessing position, tension,
chemical environment and temperatures
being generated by activated muscles and
then telling the muscles how to respond to
create movement or stability or a combination of both.
www.naturespathways.com

The combination of rigid and prestressed components making up body

structure is not limited to the musculoskeletal system. It explains the structure
of the cell as well. Cells have a pre-stressed
membrane that is filled with water and
solutes, but they dont float around like
water balloons in the body. There is more
to structure than that. There are protein
structures that make up building blocks
within the cell that are capable of rapidly
deconstructing and reconstructing themselves to meet the demands of the cells
environment. The microtubules are sort
of like tinker toys that can connect end
to end to create internal girders, stretching the membrane in the necessary shape
for the cells function. There are contractile proteins, actin filaments that when
concentrated and bundled correctly create
the proteins that create the forces that
shorten muscle. Within the cell they create
forces that change the shape of the cell
as well as move microtubules and other
structural proteins. They can be involved
in moving organelles cellular parts with
specific functions such as mitochondria

(energy production) or Golgi apparatus

(protein synthesis and remodeling), or
nutrient bundles as well.
There are other stiff protein structures
that pass through the cell membrane
and/or the nuclear membrane within the
cell that are coupled to ambient physical
forces. These structures called integrins
transmit information about the physical forces surrounding the cell and create
changes in the internal cellular behavior.
This can happen as a result of opening
channels in the cell membrane that allow
for movement of ions (salt atoms) in and
out of the cell. It can happen as result of
movement of the integrin in such a way as
to change the shape of an enzyme bound to
the cellular membranes surface so that the
enzyme then causes chemical changes, so
called second messengers, within the cell
in ways that change the cells behavior and
function.
The hair cells of the inner ear are a
concrete example of how physical forces are
changed into chemical and then neurological information. Hair cells have structural
proteins that stick out into a fluid. When

sound waves hit the eardrum, the sound

waves create waves in the fluid. As the fluid
passes over the stiff hair like structures the
hairs bend the membrane in such a way
that pores are opened and calcium rushes
through the opening. Calcium ions have a
positive electrical charge. This creates an
electrical potential that is used in creating
the nerve impulse that ultimately is interpreted by the brain as sound.
Next month I will be building on this
introductory article, trying to explain what
has been discovered about how the bodys
structure is influenced by mechanical and
physical forces, forces that are addressed
and potentially normalized by osteopathy
and other forms of manual therapy.
Jed Downs, M.D., MPH, has been
studying osteopathy since 1995.
Formerly, he worked in occupational
medicine until pursuing his passion
full time at Madison Manual Medicine, 2940 Chapel Valley Road in Fitchburg. He
uses osteopathic techniques to manage consequences

etiology, be it birth, sport, MVA, repetitive strain or

find that pets who were overly active mellow out, and pets who
looked lethargic liven up. The rejuvenating, spa-like experience of
a BioMat session is a treat that your pet will thank you for for
many years to come.
For optimal results, treat your pet using the lower-temperature settings first. You may gradually increase the temperature as they build up tolerance over repeated use, but it not
necessary to use the highest temperatures. Dont worry, it is
safe. Your furry friend will intuitively know when they have
had enough.

Try BioMat

If you are wondering if this is a good option for you, your family
and your pets, come in and give it a try! You will immediately
feel the healing, relaxing and rejuvenating effects. You may want
to bring a family member with you so you can both enjoy the
experience.

Gratitude ~ Love ~ Joy ~ Wisdom ~ Gratitude ~ Love

A profound well-being
The Float Factor offers you therapeutic relaxation
BY GRACE OLSON

Developed by John Lilly in 1954, floatation therapy has had a resurgence

of interest and attention recently and for good reason. Originally
used to test sensory deprivation, research has proven its list of benefits
to be long, not to mention its undeniable ability to bring floaters to a
level of unrivalled relaxation.
Maria Welch first discovered floating in 2013 and so intrigued subsequently visited both Minneapolis and Arizona to try it for herself. She
knew immediately that it had the power to change lives, and that
Madison needed its own floatation therapy center for people to share
similar experiences in just how effective and monumental it could be.
I had such an incredibly amazing experience of being able to get
into this deep, meditative space, Maria says. I felt so peaceful and
calm. My goal is to have floating be accessible to everyone so that
people feel really comfortable with it.
She is sharing her passion in the form of The Float Factor, which
opened in August and boasts all of the luxuries of the new and
modernized floatation therapy.

Natures Pathways | October 2015

What is floatation therapy?

Formerly known as isolation or sensory deprivation tanks, Maria

explains that while floating in the past was a deprivation experience,
centers have grown and evolved into spa-like environments that offer
big health benefits. Float pods filled with Epsom salt about 1,000
pounds and skin-temperature water fill the structure to create
buoyancy that allows your body to float naturally.
When youre floating, there are several things that happen that are
unique, she says. You have no pressure on any part of your body, so
youre basically in a weightless environment where your body is totally
supported and able to focus on healing.
Its usually not conscious, but our brains spend a lot of energy maintaining our bodies in space and dealing with gravity. During floating,
when your brain doesnt have to contend with those things, it has the
energy to focus on its ability to heal and repair, to be creative or simply
relax and let go.

e ~ Joy ~ Wisdom ~ Gratitude ~ Love ~ Joy ~ Wisdom

Floating allows you to delve into a very deep meditative space called the
theta state, the rhythm your body is in right before you fall asleep, and also
the space ideal for healing and stress release.
Its great for someone who is under a lot of stress or experiences anxiety,
and it actually physiologically shifts stress hormone levels, Maria explains. We
know that chronic illnesses, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease
and immune disorders are related to stress. By lowering stress hormones, floating may be a great way to prevent these conditions down the road.
Post-traumatic stress disorder, fibromyalgia, chronic pain and even expectant women and athletes are on the list of those floating can help. It speeds up
recovery time, aids in muscle healing and increases blood flow because there
is no pressure on the body.
We had an endurance biker come in who had just done a 100-mile bike
ride. When he got out of the float pod, he said, I feel amazing. I feel awake, I
feel refreshed my muscles dont hurt. He really couldnt believe how good
he felt overall, Maria says.
The Float Factor is really about that allowing yourself space to really
relax, be calm and take care of yourself. Its very rare for most of us were
always going and were very externally oriented in dealing with answering our
phones, emails and texts.

A therapeutic spa experience

Still curious about

floatation therapy?

The Float Factor has answers!

How are The Float Factors float pods kept clean?

The high salt content of the water, along with a very
small amount of disinfectant, protects the pod environment from harmful bacteria. Our Evolution filtration
system completely recirculates the water a minimum of
3 times between each client. The water passes through
a 1 micron filter and is treated with ozone and UV
light. In addition, clients are required to shower before
and after their session. This ensures that the pod is
crystal clear and clean for every client, every time.
Is it safe to fall asleep in a float pod? Yes. You can
safely fall asleep during your float and people often
do! The buoyancy of the water makes it very difficult to roll over and your mouth and nose stay well
above the water line. The water is only 11 inches deep,
so you are able to comfortably sit up if necessary.

Dealing with the outside world is one thing you dont have to worry about during

Fall temperatures mean a dialup in skin and hair
nourishment

As we near the fall temperatures (bring on the pumpkin lattes,

right?) the moisture in the air begins to decrease. The cooler
weather and drier conditions should be a reminder that our skin
requires even more nourishment. You may need to adjust your
current routine by supplementing from the next level of moisture.
And dont forget to salve your hands and neck. The key to combating the fall climate change is to use pure ingredients that help skin
retain its moisture.

Discover the benefits of sunflower seed oil

The oil derived from sunflowers is chockfull of therapeutic benefits for our skin! Like the sunflower, we enjoy the sun and beauty
that late summer brings. As you pass the fields of sunflowers
during your sunny afternoon drives through the countryside, or
happen to bring home a bunch from the market, take a moment
to appreciate the simple beauty of these bountiful flowers and the
beauty benefits they provide.
Organic seed oil from sunflowers is naturally emollient, antioxidant and vitamin rich, sustainable and non-pore clogging.
Beneficial to healthy skin and complexions with acne, redness,
rashes, or inflammation, all of its properties assist skin in healing
and fighting inflammation (skins nemesis!).
The high levels of Vitamins A, C, D and E found inside the
sunflower carry even more healing properties than almond oil or
shea butter good news for those suffering from nut allergies. It
provides a natural barrier to provide UV protection from the sun,
and it helps age defy tired or dull skin by smoothing the surface.
And yes, its another one of our oils that fights against acne
on the skin by eliminating the bacteria by forming a protective
barrier on the skins surface. Its such a pretty flower with some
seriously great benefits. The body, the heart, the nervous system
many different aspects of our bodies are also positively affected
by a healthy dose of good sunflower oil.

Improve the nutritional

value of candied apples

raditional candied apple recipes are full of sugar. Experiment with more nutritious ingredients to create healthier
apples that still boast a lot of flavor.
Homemade candied apples are a fixture come Halloween.
Sweet, delectable and very easy to make, these apples are a staple
at parties and may even be distributed to trick-or-treaters. As
anyone who has bit into a sticky, sweet candied apple can attest,
although delicious, these apples are not exactly a healthy snack.
Yet, with a few, easy modifications, its possible to improve the
nutritional value of candied apples.
With ingredients like caramel, marshmallow, chocolate fudge
and sugar, its easy to see how candied apples do not embody a
healthy treat, despite an apple being underneath all those candy
adornments.

Try these ideas to increase the nutritional value

of this beloved treat.

Make your own caramel using condensed milk, brown sugar

and butter. By controlling the ingredients, you can avoid

extra sugar and any additives in commercially sold caramel
toppings.
Use honey for the outer coating of the apple. Then roll it in
chopped almonds or granola.
32

Natures Pathways | October 2015

Coat apples with dark chocolate, which contains less sugar

than milk chocolate and is packed with antioxidants. Sprinkle with dried cranberries and chopped walnuts.
Substitute actual cinnamon for melted cinnamon candies
in recipes. Mix powdered cinnamon with a light corn syrup
and then dip the apples to coat.
Swirl homemade raspberry jam with an all-natural peanut
butter and spread it on the apples for a gourmet take on
peanut butter and jelly.
Hazelnut spreads are all the rage right now. Use your favorite chocolate hazelnut spread on the apples and sprinkle
with granola for crunch.
Drizzle the apples with your sugary concoction rather than
dipping them to cut down on the sugar. This still provides
much flavor but does so without all of the sugar.
Dip apples in melted cheese, like brie or Gouda. Sprinkle
with bacon bits for a sweet and salty combination.
Experiment with your own flavors. Making your own candied apples,
rather than purchasing them from stores, enables you to control the
ingredients and how much actual candy goes into the recipe.

Five simple
ways to increase
energy efficiency
and
savings

all and winter can be tough on your home and your wallet.
As temperatures drop, chances are your furnace will be
working overtime. This results in two things greater
energy consumption and higher heating bills. In fact, costs associated with heating and cooling a home year round typically
comprise two-thirds of the average energy bill.

Try these easy DIY projects to help cut down on

energy loss and expenses:
1. Replace worn weatherstripping around doors and

windows. Worn weatherstripping can create drafts and let

heated air out, stressing your furnace and compromising your
comfort. Replacing it takes little time and is a low-cost, highimpact solution.
2. Top up or replace old insulation in your attic. A poorly
insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss. Also,
over time, some types of insulation can settle and compact,
allowing heat to escape through gaps. Experts recommend
topping up or replacing attic insulation with a dimensionally
stable batt insulation like Roxul Comfortbatt. Aim for an
R-value of at least R-50 or a depth of roughly 16 inches.
3. Insulate basement headers and walls. Uninsulated
basement headers are common, especially in older homes.
They can act as a gateway for heated air to escape. Fixing the
problem is fast and easy. Simply cut Comfortbatt mineral
wool insulation to fit the cavity and compress into place.
Doing this throughout your basement will prevent heat loss
and can potentially save hundreds of dollars each year.
4. Caulk around windows. Cracks and crevices are a source of

heat loss. They can also be an entry point for water/moisture,
as well as for unwelcome insects. Preventative maintenance,
such as caulking, can improve energy efficiency and prevent
costly repairs.
5. Change your furnace filter. Make it a point to check your
furnace filter monthly, always changing it when its dirty. This
will improve the performance and efficiency of your furnace,
saving you money.

What is the real

cause of your
muscle
pain?

By Tracy Jobe

am very passionate about every aspect of my career. One thing

that I absolutely love doing is empowering my clients to take
charge of their own health and well-being by educating them
about their bodies. How do I do this you ask? There are many
different ways that I do this, but one subject I find myself almost
daily discussing with clients, and even reminding my seasoned
clients about, is short and tight muscles versus overstretched and
weak muscles, and how they pertain to your pain and discomfort.
When you come in complaining of pain between the shoulder
blades, it is natural to think that this is the area you need massaged.
Seems logical, right? However, this is where I break away from a lot of
massage therapists and put my education hat on. The pain is real, and
that is something no one can ever dismiss. By the end of this article
you will have that aha moment and it will all make sense, leaving you
wondering why no one else has ever mentioned it before.
Lets start with this: massage, heat and stretching are activities
that all lengthen muscles, while cold and strengthening shorten
up muscles. Second, there are two types of muscles, short and

tight, and overstretched and weak. For every muscle that is short
and tight the opposite is overstretched and weak. I hope you are
still with me here!
Heres the tricky, annoying part. You can and will feel pain,
discomfort and trigger points in both types of muscles, but as stated
earlier, massage lengthens muscles and we dont want to lengthen
muscles that are already overstretched and weak. By doing this we
are only providing very limited relief at best, and contributing to
the problem. If you are looking for relief from pain with massage
therapy, it is better to work the opposite muscle, the muscle that is
truly short and tight. So lets go back to the person coming in with
pain between the shoulder blades, which is pretty common among
drivers and desk/computer workers. In this example the pectoral
muscles are the muscles that are actually short and tight, and by
massaging these muscles, you will ultimately feel more long-lasting relief. Cold and strength training helps the overstretched and
weak muscles, right? So short term, if your pain and discomfort is
that intolerable, icing the area between your shoulder blades will
provide immediate relief because cold contracts the overstretched
and weak muscle. In the long term, doing some strengthening
exercises for the shoulder blade muscles will provide lasting relief.
Also getting regular massages, stretching and bringing heat to
the short and tight muscles, i.e. the pectorals, will help bring a
well-rounded solution to the original problem of pain between
the shoulder blades.
This principal can be applied to any muscle in the body. Here
www.naturespathways.com

are some common areas of pain and the muscle that is truly short
and tight. Posterior neck pain is from short and tight sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscles in the front of the neck. Low back pain
is a little more complex, but most often is from short and tight
quads, iliopsoas, and/or abdominals. Another common area of
pain is in the hamstrings, which is from the quads being short
and tight. Pain in the inner thigh, or adductors, are from short
and tight abductors (muscles on the outer thigh).
This is where I see my job being a little bit like detective work,
as it isnt as simple as rub here where I hurt because after all that
I just explained to you, we still have posture and trigger points to
throw into the mix. But these subjects are for another time. Here
is where you can clearly see that my approach isnt just cookie
cutter, one size fits all, and this is the reason why a good majority
of my clients have lasting relief from their pain and discomfort.
Now I could just massage the shoulder blade area and send you
on your way, but your relief will be limited, and at some point
you may feel very frustrated because you are still in pain. Instead
I educate you, and help you to understand your body. I want to
empower you to take your own health and well-being into your
own hands, and most importantly feel better.

Evolution:

arious articles have mentioned the apparent despair, inequity and inequality there is in life. It seems so few have
so much while so many have so little. The reason there is
disparity of wealth is the lack of awareness of what truly matters.
To share the wealth might be a good idea. What makes us vulnerable and what makes us strong? One can say it is up to no one else
to make us strong or to fix what goes wrong but ourselves. Do we
need help sometimes? Yes, that is why it takes a village.
We need to manage our lives for best outcomes; however,
the violence, hostility and brutality that we see in the news and
around us sometimes are not far from home. We are more aware
of terrorism both domestic and abroad and bullying on a
grand scale. Gang shootings and violence is in the news often.
Police shootings seem to be racially slanted and law enforcement
is also targeted. What can a citizen do about it? It is scary, yet we
have it in us to step up if we are able and contribute to the peace
in the world.

Natures Pathways | October 2015

But how? Meditate, breathe and pray. Build up in this way your
connection to yourself and your higher power. Do it not only for
yourself but from an altruistic perspective, for others. Then serve
your neighbor when your neighbor needs you in whatever way
you can. Take care of yourself first in order to be able to serve, lend
a hand or even stop an act of violence to a fellow traveler on our
sacred spaceship Earth.
I recently volunteered at a lecture at a spiritual facility called
The Crossing on University Avenue in Madison. The presentation
was given by Dr. Richard Davidson, an internationally renowned
neuroscience researcher and leader in brain/emotion mind body
research whose research base is the University of Wisconsin. It
was sponsored and given by the Tergar Meditation Community.
Davidsons work blending with the story of a millennia of deep
practice on the part of Buddhist monks and others enhances credibility. Davidsons mission for the talks he gives worldwide seemed
trifold:
1. To share the importance there is for science to team up with
long-standing meditative practice in measuring and discovery
2. To educate the audience in the progress science is making
in understanding and proving the power and contribution
meditation lends to the plasticity of the brain as a conduit
to mind
3. How working together we will reach and teach more people
blending ageless tradition and science that transformation is
possible
We are at the crux of evolutionary transformation and we are actively
participating in it. We can speak of how to lead in spirit and meditation. We can get serious about our growth and release addictive and
other no longer useful behavior patterns. It is the evolutionary process
of our minds to engage as well as self-reflect. We can influence and
www.naturespathways.com

change the course of our historic trajectory. Its the mission of people
like Galileo, Einstein, Hawking, Jobs, Gates and Davidson to transform and change the world by utilizing our evolving mind and the
tools and technologies it creates to evolve our conscious awareness of
ourselves and our self-evolving universe.
In so doing we can stop the senseless violent behaviors and
promote self-discovery and peace of a deep and consistent meditation practice. It is time the merging of science and spiritual practice
moves us along the path of loving kindness and a sense of gratitude for the gift we can be to ourselves and each other. How we can
possibly generate a greater understanding of where we came from
and gain direction with practice in where we are going?
Dr. Richard Davidson has been exploring mindfulness meditation since the 1970s. He used his emerging hypothesis of the
emotional life of the brain in neuroscience research when it was
going against the grain of prevailing thought at the time. Sound
familiar? He has travelled to the east and combined his efforts
with eastern thinkers and monks. Chief among them is the Dalai
Lama, who whole heartedly grew to understand and support Dr.
Davidsons work to bring east and west together. Dr. Davidsons
persistence paid off, and the new millennia approaching, Professor Davidson said, it is breathtaking in less than twenty years
the scientific and medical communities have become much more
receptive to research on mental training.
Although now, forty years after his beginning, other scientific
efforts are following suit and reproducing, confirming as well
as co-creating, more palpable evidence supporting Davidsons

hypothesis and adding to a now growing body, thousands of

papers and studies, on this emerging science. He is leading this
charge into the inner depths of mind and mindfulness and affective
neuroscience discoveries. In what amounts to a small company,
he says, he oversees as many as a dozen graduate students, ten
post-doctoral fellows 4 or more computer programmers, over 20
additional research and administrative staff and over $20 million
dollars in research grant money from many funders. Key among
them is the National Institutes of Health.
Meditation and mindfulness training and self-control leads to
peace of mind, and we now see it practiced everywhere from the
caves of India to the corporate offices of America. From this we
will evolve more peace and self-awareness. We are on the cusp of
a new era for change on the planet.
The Tergar Meditation Community sponsors free meditation
practice and teachings every Tuesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. at
the Crossing, 1127 University Avenue in Madison.

Sambucus nigra
...............................................

uropean elder is a tree native

to Europe and parts of Asia and
Africa, and it also grows in the
United States. There are several different
types of elder, such as American elder,
but European elder is the type most often
used as a supplement. Parts of the elder
tree such as the berries and flowers
have historically been used for pain,

swelling, infections, coughs and skin

conditions. Current folk or traditional
uses of elderberry and elder flower
include flu, colds, fevers, constipation
and sinus infections.
The dried flowers (elder flower) and the
cooked blue/black berries (elderberry) of
the European elder tree are used in teas,
liquid extracts and capsules.

What the science says

Although some small studies show that

elderberry may relieve flu symptoms, the
evidence is not strong enough to support
this use of the berry.
A few studies have suggested that a
product containing elder flower and
other herbs can help treat sinus infections when used with antibiotics, but
further research is needed to confirm
any benefit.
No reliable information is available on
the effectiveness of elderberry and elder
flower for other uses.

Side effects and cautions

Uncooked or unripe elderberries are toxic

and cause nausea, vomiting or severe diarrhea. Only the blue/black berries of elder
are edible.
Because of elder flowers possible
diuretic effects, use caution if taking it with
drugs that increase urination.

Consciously
connecting

By Jennifer M. Warner, MSE, LPC
and Holistic Psychotherapist

onsciously connecting can be done in several ways, and each

can be as unique as each one of us. It can be done through
meditation, guided meditation, prayer, yoga, chanting,
repeating mantras and many others. Any spiritual practice is powerful and invaluable to our mental, emotional and physical health.
It can be as simple as finding time to pause, to breathe and
connect. When we allow the mind and body to come to a stop we
are able to make conscious contact.
When you want to consciously connect, shutting down the inner
dialogue is the key to accessing the higher awareness. It is when we go
below the surface that we find a calm and peaceful state of being. Just
give yourself the opportunity to be silent. Even if the mind is chattering, it is when you get that sense of calmness that is your connection
to your source. As you practice, it will become easier and more automatic. It is training the mind to be OK with the silence.
Consciously connecting can fill us up when we are feeling drained,
exhausted and overwhelmed. It can be a way to refresh our system.
When we connect consciously we feel a connection to our
source and the higher realms. We then realize we are a spiritual
being having a human experience and that we are a spiritual
divine being. Consciously connecting puts us in the creator state,
which is our natural sense of being. It is coming from a place of
feeling rather than just thinking.
Regular practice will bring a state of peacefulness and calm,
but at the same time a feeling of energy and even bliss. When
one consciously connects they will experience and have a greater
awareness of synchronicities, intuition and guidance.
Consciously connecting expands ones consciousness. It brings
about thinking what is in the highest interest of self as well as all,
which is unity consciousness. It is about operating from a space
of neutrality without judgment of self or others. It is learning to
honor everyones journey and to appreciate all.
When we consciously connect we affect everyone and impact
all. It shifts the energy fields off of course such as in low energy
www.naturespathways.com

thoughts and emotions. You enhance everything around you,

people, animals, plants and the earth. You begin to hold a new
vibration of energy. When in alignment with this high spiritual
energy, the source of everything, we have the power to heal,
manifest, attract abundance and live from a place of love. When
we connect to that we are already connected to, we experience
more joy, peace, calm, love and balance in our lives. It is when we
disconnect and believe that we are separate from God/our source
that we lose our way and get stuck in the lower energies.
Get outside and feel the earth supporting you. Look up at the sky;
notice the sun, the clouds, the elements and how they present to
you. Nature has an ability to bring us into a higher vibration naturally. Be aware and present. Notice, feel, see, hear, sense and connect
with all that is around you. Imagine yourself as part of the environment become a part of the natural surroundings. Note how it
affects your body and your heart. Notice how everything responds.
Just allow nature to show you how to be present with all that is.
Being connected will cause the mind to become clearer,
thoughts to flow, bring greater insight and more creativity. Your
emotions flow and your heart opens. You start to realize that
you can just be and be you. You start to manifest what you want
into your life. Consciously connecting is a cumulative practice
that builds with time. It is a gradual unfolding and continues
to build with practice. When we consciously connect we bridge
all together from the spiritual and human worlds, to the animal
kingdom and the nature world.
So find time today and every day to make conscious contact
and bask in the glory of your infiniteness.

Controlling
your migraine
threshold

By Magdalena Shemayev, LMBT, CPT

oo much sleep, not enough sleep. Extra cup of coffee, or

you skipped your second cup today. You could be in the
middle of finals at school, or maybe you just finally got a
break after a long week at work. Yet, no matter what, it seems like
its time for a migraine. The neck pain starts to creep in, maybe
you yawn, and maybe you start craving sugar. You get nauseous,
the pain creeps behind one eye, and all you can think about is
crawling to a dark room and trying to sleep it off.
Unfortunately, its much harder to stop pain once it begins than
it is to prevent it. A better approach lies in identifying as many
migraine triggers as possible, and controlling the ones you can.
Migraine triggers are highly individual, but there are common

themes. According to a large study, the most common trigger is
weather, followed closely by stress and not enough sleep. For those
who have dealt with migraines many of us for our whole lives
some triggers are obvious and predictable (no, thanks, Ill pass
on the white wine!), while others are elusive and fickle. Maybe
some days you can handle that extra cup of coffee, and other days,
a few sips and you can feel the throbbing start. What gives?

GROW YOUR

This is where the concept of a trigger threshold is useful. A tool

used to describe how and why certain combinations lead to that
telltale pain, being able to identify and whittle away at your own
trigger threshold is an invaluable tool for the migraineur.
Imagine a cup that, when filled, means you get a migraine.
Some things add a few drops, like spending too many hours at
your computer or forgetting your sunglasses on a long walk. Some
things fill the cup halfway, like a glass of white wine or sleeping on
your neck wrong.
What matters most is how full the cup already is. Say you
skipped a meal thats a third of your glass. Unfortunately, you
skipped that meal because you slept badly (another quarter, lets
say), and you tossed and turned so much you wrenched your neck
(another quarter). Now your glass is five sixths full, so while your
coworker wearing cologne isnt usually an issue, BAM, the glass is
full and now its migraine time.
Some triggers are controllable. Avoiding certain foods, for
example, is a relatively easy solution, or sticking to two cups of
coffee a day. Other triggers are completely outside our control,
like the weather or whether a coworker piles on the cologne for
a hot date. A lot of triggers can be controlled to an extent with
regular massage to reduce stress, eating regularly and not skipping meals, stretching for muscle tension, etc. In particular, stress
and physical tension reduction can go a long way toward preventing a migraine, or if one has already started, making the pain and
symptoms more bearable.
One of the most common symptoms of migraines more
common even than nausea or the migraine aura itself in some
studies is neck pain. For many, neck pain is the final drop in
their migraine cup, or perhaps the first symptom of the migraine
itself. Many common prescription migraine medications, such
as the triptans (Imitrex, Amerge, etc.) can cause muscle cramps
and tension, which dont feel great even if your head starts to feel
better. Massage can help relieve the tension before and during
a migraine, and regular bodywork can help reduce your overall
stress levels and prevent the physical tension patterns from taking
hold as easily.
Most importantly, find what combination works for you. The
key is to control as many triggers and symptoms as possible so
that when the uncontrollable happens, your cup isnt already full.
Many find it hard to tell what facets of their migraines are triggers and precede the migraine, or make up the migraine itself.
By regularly emptying your migraine cup, or keeping the amount
in it low, you can reduce your levels of pain and help prevent a
migraine before it starts.

Dogs and
their unique
relationship
with
weather
...................................................................

wning a dog is a big responsibility, but one that also provides a

companion whose love is unconditional. Dog owners quickly learn their
four-legged friends respond differently
than humans to certain situations, including the changing weather.
Many dog owners may notice that
their pets seem particularly attuned to
the weather. Changing weather can affect
canines much like it does people, but dogs
may also be affected in ways their owners
are not. According to the Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, dogs
can feel changes in barometric pressure
and even in the static electric field that
occurs in the air. The American Animal
Hospital Association says dogs behavioral
changes may be attributable to changes in
the weather. Dogs may become agitated or
overexcited by dips in barometric pressure.
As electrical storms approach, some dogs
may get very anxious, even running and
hiding if their anxiety is especially high.
Many dogs are afraid of thunder and lightning and can sense approaching storms even
when they are still miles away. According to
researchers at Penn State University, between
15 and 30 percent of all dogs are extremely
scared of thunder and may experience a
rapid increase of cortisol, a stress hormone.
Dogs also can sniff out storms, detecting concentrations of chemicals common
www.naturespathways.com

during some storms. Dogs can smell ozone

in the air associated with lightning as well.
Dogs may be physically affected by
weather just like their owners are. Although
there is little scientific work specifically on
the effects of cold or damp weather on dogs
that occurs during autumn and early winter,
it does seem that canines feel the effects of
these changes. Owners often notice more
stiffness and lameness in pets during adverse

weather conditions. Pain resulting from

arthritis may increase and muscles may
stiffen when the climate becomes cooler.
Many animals are known to have an
innate sense of changing weather or oncoming storms. Dogs can learn to anticipate
meaning behind atmospheric changes that
can alert others to upcoming weather.
