Module Aim(s)

To enable the student to:


Identify the impact of the supply of different building
services to the building technologically, economically &
socially
Develop an understanding of the integration of different
building services
Familiarize with legislative requirements in building design
and service provision

Learning outcomes

The student will be able to


Identify building services required to provide environmental
comfort, heath, safety and welfare to the occupants
Appreciate the importance of the selection, design,
construction and service provision in buildings for
sustainability of the building and the environment
Identify appropriate construction materials & their
characteristics
Demonstrate the understanding of relevant laws &
regulations in design & provision of building services
Analyse the existing practices used in provision of building
services

Practical

Basic requirements of buildings in term of heat, light,


sound & moisture
Provision of building services
Service core requirements for high rise buildings
Auxiliary services - hot water, chilled water, steam, gas,
transportation, waste disposal, standby power supply systems
etc.
Principles of sustainability, the impact of buildings & their
uses on natural & built environment, green building concept
Sanitary, safety, welfare provisions in buildings
The characteristics, behavior & use of construction materials
(bricks, blocks, cement, sand, aggregate, concrete,
reinforcement, timber, tiles, paints, cladding materials, polymers,
steel & other metals etc.)
Access for disabled: Regulations and standards related to
service provision for disabled, special building access
requirements, design factors
Laws & regulations related to building design &
services
provision
- UDA planning & building regulations:
Legislative requirements in buildings with
respect to building space, height,
ventilation, light, access etc.
- Laws of local councils
- ICTAD specifications etc.
Environment related laws related to provision
of building services
Regulations related to building safety including
fire protection

Mixing of concrete & carrying out standard tests


- Determine setting time of concrete using Vicat
Apparatus
- Determine workability of concrete - Slump test &
Compacting Factor test
- Determine compressive strength of concrete using cube
test
- Determine compressive & tensile strengths of bricks,
blocks & steel
Visits to different types of buildings & buildings serving
different purposes such as Hospitals, Hotels, Residential
apartment complexes, Shopping malls, Audio video studios, High
rise buildings
