On Labor Day, September 7, Zumbrota

VFW Post # 5727 hosted its monthly
fish fry. Honored guests were 15 veterans from the Minnesota Veterans Home
in Hastings. They represent several eras
of war time and peace time, none the
less, they served their country well and
are living in Hastings as it is a board and
care domiciliary for veterans only. So on
behalf of the Auxiliary Post #5727, we
would like to say thank you to our VFW
veterans and volunteers for offering their
time and money by paying it forward by
giving back to their fellow veterans. The
meal was wonderful as usual and well
appreciated by all. Please come to the
next fish fry and meet some veterans.

The perfect tux, the beautiful flowers,

exquisite decorating. Let us help you
down the aisle in style.

The Covered Bridge Music & Arts Festival Committee needs YOU!
Volunteers and civic organizations are the backbone of every local
festival and event in Minnesota. Even though Zumbrotas Covered
Bridge Festival has always been generously supported and staffed by
local businesses, civic organizations and volunteers the overall
decline in civic organizations has left the Covered Bridge Festival in
desperate need of volunteers. The festival is chaired by the Zumbrota
EDA and is not funded by tax dollars but rather has always been
funded by the generosity of area businesses, fund raising, civic clubs
and vendor fees. The other missing piece is manpower. Civic clubs
and volunteers have supplied the manpower necessary to pull off the
festival in years past. But as volunteerism wanes the burden of pulling
off the Festival gets more difficult resulting in less fresh ideas and a
tightened budget. How many times have you said you wished there
was a certain event or activity at the Covered Bridge Festival? Now
is your time to share your ideas with others interested in making the
Covered Bridge Festival the best it can be. Do you have a great idea
for an activity? Are you looking for a way to be involved in the
community and meet some other like-minded people? If so the
Covered Bridge Festival Committee could be a great fit for you. We
will be having an organizational meeting on October 8, 2015 at 6:00
p.m. in the Zumbrota Town Hall.
Please join us for refreshments and a great evening brainstorming
about our wonderful community festival.

Live Well Goodhue County announces

Healthy Community Grant opportunity
Live Well Goodhue County
announces the launch of a new
Healthy Community Grant that
will help our communities to shape
the health of their residents. Helping to create good health where
we live, work, learn and play, is
the goal of the Live Well Goodhue
County Healthy Community Grant,
the local initiative of the Statewide Health Improvement Program
(SHIP). said Nina Arneson, Di-

rector of Goodhue County Health

and Human Services. Healthy
living isnt just an issue for the
local service agencies or local
hospitals and clinics, its an issue
that all parts of the community
need to address.
Minnesota is at the center of a
community-wellness movement
with SHIP efforts taking place
across the state, along with the
Blue Zones in Albert Lea, the

Heart of New Ulm, Mower

Refreshed in Austin, and several
others. At its core, this work concept involves supporting individuals behavior by investing in communities to create more opportunity for residents to be healthy.
For example, encouraging people
to get outside and walk more becomes easier in a community with
good sidewalks. Encouraging
people to eat healthier becomes

easier when people have access to

fresh, high-quality fruits and vegetables. Evidence shows that in
addition to providing better health
for individuals, these changes can
help reduce health care costs associated with chronic diseases such
as diabetes and heart disease.
David Anderson, Live Well
Goodhue County Coordinator,
said, SHIP employs science-based
strategies that focus on creating

sustainable, systemic changes. By

focusing on multiple strategies
within one community we know
we will have a larger impact on
peoples behavior and this is the
reason why Live Well Goodhue
County will work with one community at a time for the next five
years. The Healthy Community
Grant will provide our communities with technical assistance and
funds up to $40,000 to implement activities within four settings:
community, school, workplace
wellness and health care.
Funding for Live Well Goodhue
County comes from SHIP and is
contingent on legislative approval
each biennium. The Healthy Community Grants amounts could
change depending on the total SHIP
grant appropriated to Live Well
Goodhue County.
Live Well Goodhue County staff
will be hosting a Healthy Community Forum across Goodhue
County during October. At this
forum community members will
learn about the positive influence
SHIP has had in other Minnesota
communities, be provided with
additional information about strategies and activities that could happen in their community, and be
able to review application requirements. These forums are open to
everyone in the community. Forum dates, times and locations will
be posted on the Live Well
Goodhue County website http://
www.co.goodhue. mn.us/206/
Live-Well-Goodhue-County and
Facebook
Page
https://
www.facebook.com/gchhs.
To receive funding, a community must recruit a Live Well Committee and submit an application
by November 15, 2015. For more
information about this exciting
opportunity contact David Ander-

son at David.Anderson@
co.goodhue.mn.us or call 651-3856148. To learn more about SHIP,
