Sugar
cravings:
How to win
this
battle
............................................................
By Randi Mann, NP

IF YOU ARE overcome with cravings for sweets, there are two

main reasons:
1. You ate something usually at breakfast that spiked
your blood sugar temporarily and then your blood sugar
came crashing down so your brain tells you to eat more
sugar.
2. Your taste buds are too used to highly processed foods and
these foods have caused your gut flora (bacteria) and brain
chemistry to become imbalanced.

The healthier you eat the fewer sugar

cravings you will experience.

If you are a soda drinker whether it is regular or diet you

need to cut it out. Soda is liquid candy and a sure way to add on
the pounds. Many of my patients are addicted to diet soda and
believe since it has no calories and less caffeine than coffee that
it is a free food and it is OK to drink. It is not healthy and it has
many negative metabolic consequences. Diet soda with aspartame has been shown to be linked to obesity and increased risk
of diabetes. Aspartame is an excitotoxin that kills brain cells and
has been associated with many health risks including headaches,
seizures and multiple sclerosis.

Drink water as your main beverage!

For variety or fizz, try natural mineral water and add a slice of
lime, lemon or cucumber. Or try a little seltzer with juice flavoring, fresh mint or add a small amount of stevia. There are literally
hundreds of flavors of herbal teas try them hot or cold.

If you have fluctuating

blood sugars you may have
high energy that alternates
with low energy and a
hard time concentrating.
One of the best things that you can do for your heath is to keep
your blood sugar from going haywire all day long. This means to
avoid all sugar unless coming from whole fruits or vegetables. If
you have fluctuating blood sugars you may have high energy that
alternates with low energy and a hard time concentrating. You
may also crave cookies, candy and other quick sugary treats. If you
give in and consume them you will be making the problem worse.
Over time, crazy blood sugar levels and high sugar consumption
will cause cellular inflammation and insulin resistance and this
leads to diabetes, cancer, dementia and heart disease.
If you note big dips in your energy and focus, or you know that
you already have pre-diabetes, please start paying attention to your
blood sugar daily and correlate it to what you are eating. While
some may consider this controversial, I prefer that my patients
fasting blood sugar level be between 70-85 mg/dl. It should not
spike more than 40 points two hours after you eat. To measure
and monitor your fasting blood sugar, you can purchase a device
called a glucometer from your local pharmacy or drugstore. Take
www.naturespathways.com

the test before breakfast and again two hours after different meals
and see if your numbers are stable. If not, look at what you are
eating. Listen to your body. If you become crabby and irritable
later in the afternoon you probably have uneven blood sugar
levels. The food you eat early in the day sets the stage for the next
24 hours so please consume some protein (20-25 grams is great!)
for breakfast along with some fat.

kaldascenter.com

Passionate about delivering

patient service that centers on
the patients desired plan of care.

The following are great ideas to help you will

the cravings battle:
Eat a low glycemic diet small amounts of low glycemic

index foods every 3-4 hours to help keep your blood sugar
levels stable. You can find a lot of information about the glycemic index of many foods and their glycemic load (amount of
change in blood sugar levels when you eat a typical serving size
of a carbohydrate) on the Internet or from your local library.
Consume small amounts of healthy fats with carbohydrates to
slow conversion of your blood sugar such as those from fish,
olive oil, flaxseed and nuts, etc.
Avoid all artificial sweeteners and any food with high fructose
corn syrup.
Include lean protein with every meal.
Avoid all sweetened drinks including fruit juice, soda and
sports or energy drinks.
Try to consume between 25 and 35 grams of healthy fiber daily.
Take a good probiotic supplement daily to support healthy
digestion and neurotransmitter (brain chemical) production.

Healthy in
spirit: Have
a
nice day
...........................................................
By Rev. April Kain-Breese

hen someone says, Have a nice day, what goes

through your mind? Do you use this expression yourself? What do you mean by it? Perhaps it is just an
expression that you use as a social convention like saying, Bless
you when someone sneezes, or Excuse me when you sneeze.
Have you noticed that cashiers often say, Have a nice day
instead of thank you at the end of a transaction? Its especially
humorous when they say Have a nice night and its only 10:30
in the morning!
Each time we greet people, we have an opportunity to make
a connection with them. We have an opportunity to make eye
contact, to smile, perhaps to offer a compliment, or to comment
on something positive that happens in the exchange between us.
We certainly have the opportunity to express appreciation for the
service offered.
There is a grocery store bagger in our community who is so
professional about what he does that I asked him if he had spent

his career in the grocery business. He projected such a genuine air

of confidence, cordiality and helpfulness that I thought perhaps
he had owned a grocery store in the past. But no, his first career
was in manufacturing.
What does it take for a serviceperson to earn your respect and
appreciation? For me, its watching someone do his/her job well,
whether its bagging groceries, changing a tire, or repairing the
furnace. Its fun to watch a job well done, and to acknowledge it
too. I enjoy extending my appreciation through a compliment and
a sincere thank you.
Sometimes, though, like today, I have the other sort of experience in which the receptionist seemed disinterested, never looked
up from the computer screen in front of her, and distractedly
said, Someone will be with you shortly. (Clearly it wouldnt be
her!) I found myself feeling reactive to that, thinking, Wow, shes
certainly unfriendly! Whats her problem? Maybe this is a really
bad place to work? I wonder what kind of evaluations she gets?!

And even, Wheres a customer questionnaire? At this point, the

important next question was, Whats going on within me that I
am having such a reaction?
When we hold on to perceived slights or even outright rudeness, we are making that offense a part of us, while those who have
elicited this response are unfazed. Garrison Keillor wrote: Thats
what happens when youre angry at people. You make them part
of your life. And isnt that true?
How many times a day do we have interactions with those who
provide service to us in one way or another, and how do those interactions go? We can walk away from such experiences feeling good
or bad, and it is up to us, not them. Can we compliment those who
treat us very well and have some empathy for the rest? Sure, we can
do that. But why should we? Because it makes us feel better.
Yes, seeing the best in others helps us! It might even sound
selfish to look at it that way, but its true! So, I will remember the
grocery store bagger for his great service, and I will try to have
some empathy and see the best in that cranky receptionist not
for her, but for me and those around me. The familiar Peace
Song says, Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.
Thats a great reminder. I hope you have a peaceful day!

Dogs and
their unique
relationship
with
weather
................................................................

wning a dog is a big responsibility, but one that also

provides a companion whose love is unconditional. Dog
owners quickly learn their four-legged friends respond
differently than humans to certain situations, including the
changing weather.
Many dog owners may notice that their pets seem particularly attuned to the weather. Changing weather can affect canines
much like it does people, but dogs may also be affected in ways
their owners are not. According to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, dogs can feel changes in barometric
pressure and even in the static electric field that occurs in the air.
The American Animal Hospital Association says dogs behavioral
changes may be attributable to changes in the weather. Dogs may

become agitated or overexcited by dips in barometric pressure. As

electrical storms approach, some dogs may get very anxious, even
running and hiding if their anxiety is especially high.
Many dogs are afraid of thunder and lightning and can sense
approaching storms even when they are still miles away. According to researchers at Penn State University, between 15 and 30
percent of all dogs are extremely scared of thunder and may experience a rapid increase of cortisol, a stress hormone.
Dogs also can sniff out storms, detecting concentrations of
chemicals common during some storms. Dogs can smell ozone in
the air associated with lightning as well.
Dogs may be physically affected by weather just like their
owners are. Although there is little scientific work specifically on

the effects of cold or damp weather on dogs that occurs during

autumn and early winter, it does seem that canines feel the effects
of these changes. Owners often notice more stiffness and lameness
in pets during adverse weather conditions. Pain resulting from
arthritis may increase and muscles may stiffen when the climate
becomes cooler.
Many animals are known to have an innate sense of changing weather or oncoming storms. Dogs can learn to anticipate
meaning behind atmospheric changes that can alert others to
upcoming weather.

Alpaca
fleece
Mother
Natures
insulation
..................................................
By Sally and Tom Schmidt

lpacas are native to South America, where they live in

the high mountainous regions of Chile, Bolivia and Peru.
Their largest import to the US occurred from 1984-1998,
according to Alpaca Registry, Inc. Since that time, the Alpaca
Owners and Breeders Association estimates that the North American alpaca herd has grown to over 100,000 animals.
These versatile animals were designed to survive extreme
temperatures, both cold and hot. Part of their fiber is hollow. The
air pocket inside their hollow-core fiber provides alpacas with
Mother Natures insulation.
In cold temperatures, the hollow hair traps an alpacas body
heat, surrounding them in a protective barrier of warmth. The
only time an alpaca feels the winter cold is when the wind blows,
separating their fiber and breaking through their layer of insulation. Alpaca fleece has even been used in sub-zero temperatures
to prevent emergency communication electronics from seizing
up. George Meyer of RJM AutoElectrics in Mount Isa, Australia is a specialist in arctic conditions and materials suitable for
use in extreme environments. In Alpacas Australia Magazine, he
says, There is only one other natural material that rivals alpaca
fleece for its warmth, but it is very hard to get hold of, polar bear
fur. Yes, polar bears also have hair that is hollow. Mother Natures
insulation can also be found on caribou, white-tailed deer and
antelope.
Alpaca fiber is equally effective at keeping you cool when the
weather heats up. The air pockets act as insulation against the heat.
This keeps your body temperature cooler than your surroundings.

Everyone can benefit from

the natural insulation
provided by alpaca
clothing, but it is especially
helpful for people with
circulatory problems.
Simply stated, in summer it blocks the heat out. In winter, it keeps
the heat in. This concept is sometimes difficult to grasp, but if you
think of alpaca fleece like the insulation in the walls of your home,
it becomes easier to understand.
When alpaca fleece is made into a finished garment, it retains its
wonderful insulating properties. A person wearing alpaca clothing experiences better temperature regulation, leading to a better
quality of life. Everyone can benefit from the natural insulation
provided by alpaca clothing, but it is especially helpful for people
with circulatory problems. Persons living with health conditions
such as Raynauds syndrome, diabetes, arthritis and hormonal
imbalance can benefit greatly by wearing alpaca clothing. Maintaining a constant core body temperature is also critical for the
elderly, cancer patients and those who have suffered traumatic
injuries.
www.naturespathways.com

Harvesting alpaca fleece is done by shearing the alpaca with

electric shears. Shearing is done by professionals who are trained
in proper care of the alpaca and its fleece. After shearing, the
fleece is ready for processing. Alpaca fleece is a renewable natural
resource. Regular shearing is important to maintaining healthy
alpacas. For alpacas living in Wisconsin, the best time to shear is
in late spring. Once they are sheared the alpacas continue growing
more fleece. This allows them to attain 1 to 2 inches of fleece
growth before winter arrives again. The fiber that is harvested is
made into clothing, allowing us to enjoy the insulation that has
helped alpacas survive for hundreds of years. So, the next time
you feel too hot or too cold, remember Mother Natures insulation: alpaca fleece.

Floatation
therapy
while you are
expecting
.................................................................

regnancy can be a wonderful state of being, but at times it

can also be uncomfortable. Many changes are taking place
in a womans body in the 38 weeks of a full-term pregnancy. Floatation therapy can help you manage the highs and lows
of pregnancy and bring you closer to your baby before he or she is
born. There are few better ways to connect with your baby before
birth than with floatation therapy. When you float you are in a
very similar environment as your baby whom is blissfully floating
inside your womb.
When you are floating your goal is to be quiet, still and relaxed.
Once you have achieved this state, you may notice something
happening inside your body. You may feel the activity of your
baby more than usual because there are no outside distractions.
Your babys movements may be more pronounced because they
are the only sensation you will feel.

Floatation spas have roughly 900 pounds of Epsom salt dissolved

in about 200 gallons of water warmed to skin temperature, about
93.5 degrees. This high concentration is what enables you to float
effortlessly. The high concentration inhibits the growth of pathogens. In addition to the high concentration, spas typically use a
combination of UV and 35 percent food grade hydrogen peroxide
to keep water in check. The water is a safe solution for you and
your baby.
The beneficial properties of Epsom salt have been known for
hundreds of years. Epsom salt has many health benefits such as
calming the nervous system, curing skin issues, soothing sore
muscles, easing edema, reducing inflammation and drawing
toxins from the body. Epsom salt is easily absorbed through the
skin and replenishes magnesium levels in the body. Magnesium
helps to produce the mood elevating chemical serotonin in the
brain, which makes you feel more calm and relaxed. Experts
believe regular Epsom salt soaks help you to feel better and gain
more energy. Floating in a supersaturated Epsom salt floatation
tank provides a maximum saturation level of Epsom salt in the
water, which cannot be recreated at home in a bathtub.
Floating allows your brain to take a well-deserved rest from
your body. When you float, every muscle in your body relaxes.
Your brain functions slow down and change into what is called
theta brain wave state. The disconnect that happens when you
achieve theta is natural and occurs right before you fall asleep and
again before you wake up. The goal of floating is to stay in theta
without falling asleep. Once in theta you may notice a calmness
come over you and may experience time passing by more quickly
than normal. Every time you float you go into theta faster and you
learn to stay in it longer and longer.
www.naturespathways.com

First time floaters are typically required to fill out a health intake
form and will receive a clear and thorough orientation prior to
floating. All floaters are required to take a thorough shower before
entering the floatation units as well as a good rinse off shower
afterward. Instructions will be given to safely enter and exit the
units. Ear plugs, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, wash cloths
and towels are usually provided.
Floating during pregnancy is a safe and effective way to take care of
yourself while you are waiting for the birth of your baby. If you have
any doubts about whether or not floating will be beneficial for you
and your baby, please confer with your obstetrician. Floating has been
regarded as a safe form of therapy for more than 40 years for people
who are healthy as well as those with various health conditions.

TAKING ACTION,
CHANGING ODDS

Great Lakes Relaxation Center has two classic tank style floatation tanks available so you can bring a friend or loved one to float simultaneously in separate
private rooms. In addition to floatation therapy, we also offer massage therapy,
sound therapy, far infrared sauna, and a steam shower unit. We are open seven
days a week and will take evening appointments, which makes it easy for you to
schedule your floatation sessions. Sessions may be scheduled over the phone or
at our website. Gift certificates can be purchased online as well. Our website is
www.ManitowocMassage.com.
Christine Vander Bloomen has been a massage therapist and owned and operated Great Lakes for nearly eleven years. Her practice has an assortment of
sensory and non-sensory experiences including massage therapy, sound therapy
and heat therapies in addition to floatation therapy. She has been an avid floater
going on three years. She is sought by those seeking pain relief, stress reduction
and pure relaxation.

Whats your
reason for
exercising?
..........................................................
By Michelle Landsverk

xercise is good for you, but which one? And for how long?
And do they have an app for that? And if its free, is it effective? Does it have to be painful? Do I have to sweat? What
if I dont sweat? When am I going to lose weight? I am going to
lose weight, right? Because why would I exercise if Im not going
to lose weight? I hate exercise
For some of us, getting out there and exercising is an enjoyable, natural part of our day. But for the masses, exercising can be
a chore, a box to be checked at the end of a long day to remind
ourselves, Yep, Im doing daily life right. And even if exercise is
fun, it certainly isnt easy to fit in.
So we need reasons. We need reasons why exercise is good, necessary even (the list is coming I promise). In the meantime, we can
wonder, if there are a million ways to exercise, why am I not doing it?
There are immediate benefits to exercising. They include mood
elevation, improved energy levels, sharper short-term memory,
better body image, and less symptoms of anxiety and stress.
There are even more long term benefits to regular exercise.
They include prevention and/or management of type 2 diabetes,
cardiac disease, vascular disease, weight control, improvement of
symptoms of many chronic diseases such as liver disease, kidney
disease, and lung diseases.
Regular exercise helps decrease the effects of cancer-related
fatigue and can help aid more restful sleep. There are many more
benefits: preventing bone density loss, chronic pain management,
and improving the symptoms of anxiety and depression included.

Now heres the kicker

If you want to tap into the long-term benefits of exercise, you must
do it regularly. And like most things in medicine, theres vigorous
debate about this next point: I believe you need to exercise at least
30 minutes at least 4 days per week, for at least 6 weeks, in order to
achieve these benefits. And you generally need to keep exercising
in order to maintain the long-term benefits.
20

Natures Pathways | October 2015

Regular exercise helps

decrease the effects of cancerrelated fatigue and can help
aid more restful sleep.
Other experts in exercise may recommend exercise 6 or 7 days
per week, for at least an hour. Some may say 3 days per week for
at least 20 minutes. It really depends on your general health, your
personal goals and your current level of fitness.
Lets start with the risks of exercise. The risk of threatening
your life is highly unlikely; in fact, the last I checked the rate was
about 1 death per year for every 20,000 adult exercisers. So its out
there, and much more likely because of underlying cardiovascular
disease or exercise that is simply risky to begin with. So lets be
real here, the benefits of exercise definitely outweigh the risks. If
you want to curb the risks of exercise, which for most of us occurs
due to overuse, improper technique, or frank trauma during an
activity that is inherently risky.
Finally, realize that there are indeed a million different ways to
exercise, so there is a right one for you. In fact, 20 percent of adults in
the United States last year met the government guidelines for aerobic
activity and muscle strengthening (a 5 percent increase from 2000).
You just need to find an exercise that works for you. In the meantime,
if you want to be safe, keep the risks down, and derive the benefits,
take a walk, at least four days per week, for 30 minutes.

Safe costumes
can prevent
Halloween
mishaps
.........................................................................

illions of people celebrate Halloween every year.

Borrowed or adapted from a few different festivals that
once took place in Europe, Halloween has origins in the
Roman Feralia festival, the Celtic summers end festival Samhain
and the Catholic All Saints Day.
Trick-or-treating is a significant part of the Halloween festivities, but for many people, the real delight is choosing a costume.
The right costume is not only one that suits the spirit of Halloween, but also one thats safe. The Prevention First Organization
says that collisions with cars, eye injuries from sharp objects and
burns from flammable costumes account for the most youth
emergency room visits on Halloween. Just how does one create
a safe costume?

Consider these pointers when preparing for

the arrival of October 31:

Rely on flashlights and reflective tape to make trick-or-treaters

more visible during evening walks. The reflective tape can be
incorporated right into the costume design.
Choose hats and face paints in lieu of masks. Masks can block
a childs vision and impede a youngsters ability to check for
traffic.
Ensure that costumes do not drag on the floor, as costumes
that are too long can pose a tripping hazard.
Have children wear comfortable, flat shoes to reduce the risk
of tripping or falls.
22

Natures Pathways | October 2015

Rely on flashlights and

reflective tape to make trickor-treaters more visible
during evening walks.
Make sure children walk on sidewalks and well-lit paths. They
also should avoid darting out into the street to run to another
home.
Choose soft, flexible costume props whenever possible. Make
sure the props, such as swords, are not sharp or too long.
Make sure costumes and accessories are made with flameresistant materials.
Use glow sticks or battery-powered LED lights instead of lit
candles for costumes and decorations.
Trick or treat in groups with other parent chaperones so the
adults can be extra diligent in their efforts to keep children
safe.

Approval
seeker
............................................
By Lisa Klarner

ave you ever made a decision

because it would please someone
else even though you knew, deep
in your gut, that it wasnt the right decision? Have you ever confidently stated your
opinion in a meeting only to leave worrying
endlessly about how the other people felt
about what you said? If you think this way,
you may wonder (as I often did), if everyone
thinks this way. Well, they dont.
For those of us who are approval seekers,
its often difficult to say what we really
think and leave the situation with confidence. People say what they really think
every day without a problem, so why is it
so difficult for us?
Perhaps there is a history of anxiety and/or
a tendency to focus outside of ourselves for
approval. The approval received from outside
may give us a false sense of security and we
may not realize it is, in actuality, false.
It is difficult for an approval seeker to ask
for what they need. The priority is placed
on making others happy at the expense of
their own well-being. Its difficult to accept
situations when another person doesnt
like us or approve of us. According to Joyce
Meyer, Any of us who intend to do very
much in life will have to accept the fact
that there will be times when we will not
receive approval from everyone.
Being an approval seeker may work for a
while and society definitely contributes to
www.naturespathways.com

the issue with instantaneous feedback on

social media and performance ratings in the
work environment. But, the true sense of
self the knowing that lies in each one
of us is clouded by this constant desire to
look outside ourselves for the answers. How
can we connect with who we really are if we
keep living life this way? Change is a must!
Approval seekers cannot immediately change. Its not that easy. But with

determination and consistency, approval

seekers can begin to feel sure, confident
and have less anxiety.
Pay attention to your gut instinct

Overcoming
postpartum
isolation
Building your tribe
.............................................................
By Chelsie Towns

ew mothers in North American

culture have historically faced
many challenges in the postpartum, one of the most significant being isolation from their community. Our modern

postpartum practices do not embrace the

traditional need for familial support in the
first several months after birth. Distance,
work, school and other obligations in the
lives of family and friends can prevent
mothers from receiving ongoing assistance
when they need it most. This seclusion is
amplified by the long, dark winter months.
Depression and anxiety can be heightened
by postpartum hormones and the general
frustration that can come with being a new
mother.
So what can new mothers do to prevent
spiraling into postpartum isolation? As a
birth professional and mother, I have seen
and experienced postpartum isolation
firsthand. In my experience, it is important
to build your tribe before baby comes,
but its never too late. Luckily, we live in a
community with a lot of opportunities for
tribe building. Ive outlined a few below.

La Leche League
International

La Leche League International (LLL) is a

decades-old organization whose mission
is to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support,

encouragement, information and education, and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important
element in the healthy development of
the baby and mother. Free monthly meetings are held all over the Fox Valley from
Oshkosh to Green Bay. I always recommend to my clients to go to at least one
meeting before giving birth, but its never
too late to start. You will meet women with
years of breastfeeding experience as well
as other new mothers. Meetups and play
dates are often scheduled between monthly
meetings, so watch their Facebook page
for events. You can find meeting schedules
and locations at www.LLLI.org.

Babywearing International

The Fox Valley and Green Bay have a

very active babywearing community with
monthly meetings in both locations. Babywearing involves using a baby carrier to
hold your baby. Considering how often
mothers find themselves taking care of
their households and other children by
themselves, its no wonder women feel
overwhelmed contributing to the postpartum isolation. Babywearing keeps baby

close (which means far less crying!) and
gives the mother two free hands to attend
to tasks. Find the local Babywearing International group on Facebook under BWINEW & GFV Help and Chat.

Play groups

Check around your community for

mommy and me type groups. Several
hospitals and churches offer a monthly
mommy and me or play date group. There
are several Facebook groups that meet
frequently at parks and different indoor
locations in the winter. Ongoing play dates
are offered at the Thanks Givings Birth
Services office in Neenah. Public libraries
also offer a host of activities from story
time to imaginary play. The events are
inexpensive or free and appropriate for
various ages.
Whether you plan to homeschool or
not, there are several area homeschooling
groups that are often open to parents with
babies and toddlers. These groups plan
field trips, play dates, picnics and parties
that give parents and children the opportunity to socialize.

Virtual community

Despite the solitude of modern parenting,

the Internet has afforded us the opportunity to talk over a virtual picket fence. Our
new neighbors can be near or far, but still
feel close by thanks to multiple forums,
www.naturespathways.com

blogs, websites and Facebook groups that

connect like-minded people at the touch
of a button. There are many Facebook
groups devoted to parenting. One need
only search to find a group that seems to
fit their needs. Ask your friends or at a LLL
meeting for recommendations!

Reaching out

Regardless of how you prepare for postpartum isolation, you may still feel a
degree of loneliness as you tend to your
new baby, particularly in the winter. There
is no shame in feeling sad, anxious or frustrated. You should never hesitate to reach
out to whatever tribe youve built around
yourself. Reach out to friends, LLL leaders,
your doula, your provider, etc., until you
find someone who is able and willing
to help you. If you have any thoughts of
harming yourself or your baby, seek help
immediately.

Returning to
pole
exercise
................................................................
By Breanna

nyone that knows me knows how

much I love pole fitness classes. It
has been a big part of my life, and
the dance studio has become my sanctuary.
Pole has helped me recover from an abusive
relationship, and has kept me sane through
the craziest of times in my life. When my
friends come over, theyll often ask me to
jump on my home pole and show them
some things. Im not ashamed of what I do,
and Ill gladly share it with anyone.
A few months ago, I came to the realization that I had to stop taking classes for a
while. As soon as it hit me, I began sobbing.
I was absolutely devastated and I could
hardly believe this was happening. I didnt
want to stop, but there was so much going
on in my life that I just couldnt keep it up.
I was a part-time student with a full load of
classes and a very limited income. I kept in
contact with my pole pals, and dreamed of
the day that I would be able to come back.
That day finally arrived.
Going back to pole fitness classes was like
coming home. I was ecstatic to see all of the
pole ladies that I had missed so dearly, and
get back to the sport that I adore. Each time
I am at the studio, I am reminded how lucky
I am to have all of these great women in my
life and to have the opportunity to enjoy
this sport. Even though I am quite happy
to be back, its definitely not all glitter and
rainbows. I didnt practice on my home pole
much while I was away, and my pole skill
level had dropped dramatically. As much as
Id like to believe that I can just waltz into
the studio and pull off the tricks I used to,
its not feasible.
It can be hard to come back to something

like pole fitness after being gone for so long.

Anyone who has to face the same situation,
or the same type of situation knows how I
feel. Ill let you in on a few
revelations Ive
had that have
helped me
keep going:

Get back
to basics

The advanced skills that I

possessed were built off of my mastery
of the basics. Ive attempted some advanced
moves since Ive returned, and Ive realized
that I need to remaster those basic skills
before I can get back to the level I used to be.

It takes time and hard work

I wanted to believe that I still had my

advanced skills upon my return. Its
humbling and frustrating to find out that
I dont have many of those skills anymore.
I have to remind myself each time that it
takes time and hard work. I need to remember how long it took me to get where I was,
and to remember that it will take me a while
to get back to that.

It gets better

It gets so frustrating when I cant get a

move that I used perform with ease. I wish
I could just snap my fingers and I would
be back. I remember feeling like this when
I started taking pole fitness classes. I must
keep reminding myself that everything
will get better. I will accomplish my goals
and I will be able to get back to the skill
level I was before and more.

I can accomplish what I set

my mind to

My participation in pole fitness has taught

me this valuable lesson: if I want something bad enough, and Im willing to work
toward it, I can most definitely accomplish
it. I need to remember that I can get back
to that skill level I had as long as I believe
in myself.
Quitting my pole classes was not easy, but
coming back was even harder. Thankfully,
I am surrounded by a group of supportive
women who know exactly what Im going
through. Im absolutely thrilled to be back
in the studio, and I look forward to gaining
back my old skills and learning some new
ones. It wont be easy, but it will definitely
be worth it.

YOUR

SKIN HEALTH
SPECIALISTS:

Forefront Dermatology provides

state-of-the-art, compassionate care
BY GRACE OLSON

There are a few well-known realities about skin: its certainly one of
the first things noticed about another person, its the largest organ
of your body and it protects your internal structure from outside
elements. It has a big job to do, and affects our well-being both
emotionally and physically more than we may realize.
We sometimes take it for granted, but our skin deserves a prominent place on the list of habits to follow for a balanced and healthy
life. Thats where Forefront Dermatology comes in. Formerly known
as Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin, the team of skin health
specialists has been serving Wisconsin for over 40 years.
(Were) dedicated to the health and care of the skin as well as
general medical conditions that involve the skin, Dr. Lisa Campbell says. Our group of professionals specializes in all aspects of
dermatology.
That includes newborn pediatrics to adult geriatric services, Dr.
David Bertler adds. We provide the full range.
Forefront Dermatology holds a commitment to see patients
the same or next day in many of their clinic locations where they
expertly address a wide spectrum of conditions, including those
more commonly known like acne, eczema, rashes, warts, psoriasis and rosacea, and also cosmetic concerns by providing patients
with compassionate care, and providing education and personalized care programs throughout the patients journey.

EXPERTS IN SKIN CANCER CARE

Forefront Dermatology has become an industry expert on treating

basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and less common
skin cancers through a highly specialized procedure: Mohs micrographic surgery, a skin cancer-removing technique with a 99 percent

cure rate in most cases. Used primarily on skin cancers affecting the
face, hands and feet, Mohs surgerys clinical effectiveness paired
with minimal scarring has made it an industry standard.
*Mohs surgery is unique and so effective because of the way the
removed tissue is microscopically examined, evaluating 100 percent
of the surgical margins. The pathologic interpretation of the tissue
margins is done on site by the Mohs surgeon, who is specially trained
in the reading of these slides and is best able to correlate any microscopic findings with the surgical site on the patient.
The Mohs micrographic surgeons at Forefront Dermatology make
up the largest group of Mohs surgeons in the state of Wisconsin,
and hold the experience and offer a level of knowledge and expertise that cant be beat. Trained specifically for Mohs surgery and
equipped with the knowhow to provide you the best care, theyre all
board certified and have completed fellowships through the American College of Mohs Surgery.

MEET THE MOHS SURGEONS OF

FOREFRONT DERMATOLOGY

Get to know some of Forefront Dermatologys most experienced

and respected Mohs surgeons:

DAVID E. BERTLER, MD

Time with Forefront Dermatology: 10 years.

Where did you complete your Mohs fellowship training? University of Louisville.
Why did you get into dermatology? I did
a rotation during my senior year of medical
school in dermatology and I just loved it.

Between me and the patient, I could come to a relatively quick

diagnosis and treatment plan without having to involve a lot of
imaging or specialty referrals.
What does a typical day for you at Forefront Dermatology
entail? Every day is different because every patient I treat is different. Im doing the same procedure (Mohs micrographic surgery),
but its always a unique experience between me and the patient.
What is your favorite part of your day? The end of the day when
I know Ive worked well with my team and weve made a positive
impact on our patient.
What do you recommend people do to try and prevent skin
cancer? I always tell patients that a lot of it is just making healthy
choices. You put your seatbelt on when you hop in a car, so you
should put on a broad-spectrum sunscreen at least from April to
October, wear hats with brims and avoid the sun between 10 a.m.
and 2 p.m.

LISA B. CAMPBELL, MD

Time with Forefront Dermatology: 6.5 years.

Where did you complete your Mohs fellowship training? Geisinger Medical Center in
Pennsylvania.
Why did you get into dermatology? Of all
areas of medicine, I found dermatology to be
the most fascinating. I chose the subspecialty of procedural dermatology and Mohs surgery because I enjoy detailed, hands-on work.
What lessons has your work life taught you? Treat others as you
would like to be treated. Smile a lot.
If readers could walk away knowing one thing about Forefront
Dermatology, what would it be? We are real people, working hard
to help others.
What is your favorite part of your day? My favorite part of the day
is meeting my patients prior to surgery learning about them, their
activities and passions, their family and work life, their worries, and
being able to connect with each person to put them at ease. Many
times I can turn a stressful situation into a positive experience.
How does Forefront Dermatology differ from other dermatology practices? We have a busy practice, as most physicians do, but
our physicians and staff will make every attempt to see that the
experience in the office is pleasant and focused on the person.

SEAN F. PATTEE, MD

Time with Forefront Dermatology: 10 years.

Where did you complete your Mohs fellowship training? University of Massachusetts.
Why did you get into dermatology, specifically Mohs micrographic surgery? When I was
studying dermatology in my residency and I
learned about Mohs surgery, I fell in love with it. I fell in love with
the fact that when a patient came to me and had those concerns
and had skin cancer that I could present to them a treatment
that could offer them a 99 percent cure rate in most cases.
What makes Forefront Dermatology unique? We do probably 98
percent of the reconstructive surgery here in our clinic. Im talking
to (patients) and having a conversation, which is something I enjoy.
I get to know my patients as Im doing the surgery.

What is your favorite part of your day? My greatest satisfaction

comes from seeing my patients happy and well.
If readers could walk away knowing one thing about you and
the care you provide, what would it be? Even though Ive seen
thousands of skin cancers, I understand that when a patient comes
to me, this is probably their first experience with skin cancer. I take
that seriously I understand that theyre scared and that they dont
know what to expect. I want them to be educated and then feel
empowered.

JOHN STARLING, III, MD

Time with Forefront Dermatology: 5 years.

Where did you complete your Mohs fellowship training? I performed a one-year fellowship at The Skin Cancer Center in Cincinnati
with Brett Coldiron, MD, the past president of
both the American College of Mohs Surgery
and the American Academy of Dermatology.
Why did you get into dermatology? Dermatology has a very
descriptive, rich vocabulary that arises from many Greek and Latin
roots, and so this specialty helped me combine a professional
interest in medicine with a previous academic interest in ancient
languages.
What is your favorite part of your day? My favorite parts of the
day include sharing stories with my patients while I get to know
them during their time here for Mohs surgery I am eternally
thankful for those who have contributed to my development: family
members, patients, professors, colleagues and coaches. Therefore, I
try my hardest to practice in a first class way as I represent them all.
What makes Forefront Dermatology unique? I feel fortunate to
be part of a large team of physicians who are board certified in
dermatology and fellowship trained in dermatopathology, pediatric dermatology and Mohs surgery. Our team presents a wealth of
training and expertise. While we are a larger organization, we strive
to provide personalized care and individualized treatment plans
for our patients.

A mindfulness
practice for
anxiety and
depression
......................................................................
By Judith Rogers, L.C.S.W.

powerful practice that helps us deal with anxiety and depression is mindful self-compassion. Dr. Kristen Neff, researcher
at the University of Texas, Austin, defines mindful selfcompassion as a practice of evoking goodwill toward ourselves especially when we are suffering. It is a good practice to use when you are
feeling inadequate. It replaces beating oneself up with self-criticism
and recognizing that being imperfect, failing, and experiencing difficulty happens to all of us. Common humanity is a term Neff uses
to acknowledge that being human means being imperfect and that
all people have these sorts of painful experiences. When you have a
difficult experience or at the end of a difficult day, say to yourself, I
love you, you did the best you could today and even if things didnt
turn out the way you planned, I love you anyway.

Self-compassion is not self-pity

Neff states that self-compassion is not self-pity. Self-pity is an over

identification with your problems and forgetting that we all have
similar problems. Self-pity causes you to have difficulty stepping
back from the situation to gain clarity, and often creates drama
rather than emotional freedom. Self-pity brings more negativity
and feelings of powerlessness.

Self-compassion is not self-indulgence

Neff describes how self-compassion is very different from selfindulgence. Being self-compassionate means that you want to be
happy and healthy in the long term; just giving into pleasure may
harm your overall well-being. Having a bad day and giving yourself permission to participate in behavior that is not healthy
like drinking too much alcohol, overeating, being a coach potato
www.naturespathways.com

is not self-compassion. It is self-indulgence, and it will backfire

in the long run.

Self-compassion versus self-esteem

Neff states, Although self-compassion may seem similar to selfesteem, they are different in many ways. She points out that in
modern Western culture self-esteem is often based on how different we are from others how much we stand out or how special
we are, making it not OK to be average. Working on self-esteem
often creates narcissistic and self-absorbed behavior. It creates
depression when we are unable to stand out as being special and
sometimes ends in anger and aggression toward others as well.
The need for high self-esteem can cause us to bury shortcomings

Breast Cancer
Awareness
Q&A
......................................................................
By Christine Haase

ctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, therefore I

thought I would answer some frequently asked questions
about thermography.

What is the difference between thermography

and mammography?
Mammography assesses anatomically (mass) and thermogra-

phy assesses function (inflammatory).

Radiation is emitted in a mammogram but not in a

thermogram.

Mammograms must squeeze the breast tissue but the scan

picture is taken approximately four feet away (behind a

privacy curtain).

Once the scan is taken, what is next?

All the scan pictures usually five along with the medical
history is electronically sent to certified MDs to read the scans.
The reports are returned within twenty four to forty eight hours.
Complete reports and copies of the scans are then sent directly to
the client in a confidential marked envelope.

How often do I need a breast scan?

After your initial breast scan, we suggest a second scan at three

months to set a baseline. If there are no changes from the first scan
to the second, then yearly scans are appropriate.

Does my breast tissue change?

Most definitely. Because pre-menopausal breast tissue is denser

and more vascular than postmenopausal breast tissue,
any pathology taking place
will have a better vascular supply and there will be
increased cell changes and
32

Natures Pathways | October 2015

faster development of pathology in younger women.

The disadvantage with mammography is that with radiographically dense breasts it is difficult to differentiate between normal
and abnormal density (fibrocystic breast) in the early stages of
pathology. (It may also be necessary to use more radiation to
properly image dense breasts.)
Thermography is better suited to detect the physiological
changes in the denser and more vascular pre-menopausal breast
with positive findings months and sometimes years before the
pathology becomes dense enough to be seen with mammography. Thermal studies improve the detection rates and accuracy of
mammography.

How soon can a thermogram

detect cancer cells?

Average growth rate of breast cancer tumor (cancer cells double in

number on average every 90 days):
90 days 2 cells
1 year 16 cells
2 years 256 cells
3 years 4,096 cells
4 years 65,536 cells
Still undetectable with mammography:
5 years 1,048,576 cells
6 years 16,777,216 cells
7 years 268,435,456 cells
8 years 4,294,967,296 cells (doubled 32 times and normally
detected by mammogram at this stage, 1 cm size)

www.naturespathways.com

Thermal studies improve

the detection rates and
accuracy of mammography.
40 doublings (approximately 10 years) is generally considered
lethal.
Screening thermography has the opportunity to detect changes
at any stage in the development from the first year through to
when a tumor is dense enough to be seen with mammography.
This early detection of change can lead to earlier diagnosis and
better treatment options, as well as the opportunity for patients
and their health care practitioners to intervene at an early stage
with preventative treatment.

A MINDFULNESS PRACTICE continued from page 31

rather than being aware of them and changing them. The need to
be perfect is anxiety producing.

Self-compassion is not based on self-evaluation

People direct compassion to themselves because all humans

deserve compassion. This means with self-compassion you dont
have to be prettier, smarter or more talented to feel good about
yourself. Personal failings are less likely to cause depression and
anxiety. Researchers found that in comparison to self-esteem, selfcompassion is associated with greater emotional resilience, more
accurate self-concepts, more caring relationship behavior as well as
less narcissism and reactive anger.
Visit www.self-compassion.org to find out more about Kristen
Neff s work on self-compassion.
Judy Rogers, M.S., L.C.S.W., is the founder of the Mindfulness
Center for Wellbeing in Neenah. She is a retired psychotherapist
with over 25 years of experience.

Does health insurance cover the cost of

thermography?

No, not in Wisconsin at this time. But you may use flexible spending dollars.
Christine Haase has been a certified clinical thermographer (CCT), level I and
level II, with the American College of Clinical Thermography (ACCT) since

It is your fault youre

fat, but getting
skinny
is
easy
..................................................................................
By Howard J Lubin, B.S., D.D.S.

hen Marie Osmond struts across

your TV screen in a little black
dress hawking her cardboardtasting, mail-order meals, youve got to
wonder: could you really lose 5 pounds in
your first week as she claims? Even if you can
stomach her food, its not likely. To lose that
much fat so quickly, you would literally have
to starve for the entire week. Otherwise,
youre just losing water and will quickly
regain the weight. Also, as soon as the UPS
guy stops showing up, what happens then?
Let us take a look at why you are fat and
how easy it really is to get skinny.

Your doctor is part of the

problem

Just show up at your doctors office with

the sniffles and see what happens next. You
will usually leave with a prescription for an
antibiotic, whether you need it or not (and
you seldom really need it). Antibiotics get
handed out like candy these days. They often
dont help you get better, but kill off the good
bacteria in your gut you need to digest your
food. The result? Nutrients are not properly
absorbed in your stomach and you get fat.
Same goes for heartburn. Your doc will
give you a prescription for a stomach acid

reducing pill. Your

heartburn goes away (for
a short time), but your stomach
acid takes a permanent vacation. Again,
you have problems properly digesting your
food and get fat.
Same story for many diabetes drugs and
cholesterol lowering drugs. They interfere
with the normal functions of your body and
you get fat. They also drain key nutrients
from your body, such as coenzyme Q10,
magnesium and vitamin B-12.
And dont even think about bariatric
surgery where they slice and dice your
stomach to make it smaller. One in 100
dont even live through the surgery. The
other poor suckers are promised that huge
gobs of fat will melt off their bodies and
their diabetes is cured. Guess what? Within
5 years, at least half of all those patients have
regained all their weight and are once again
diabetic! Most develop cases of malnutrition since their stomachs are so small they
cant absorb the nutrients they need.

What really is the key to

losing weight?

Many weight conscious people think that if

you simply eat fewer calories than you burn,
youll lose weight. Nothing could be further
from the truth. You can be skinny and have
a lot of fat hanging around at the same time.
Your body must be functioning properly
to drop the pounds and keep them off. If
you are suffering from diabetes, high blood
www.naturespathways.com

pressure, arthritis or many other problems,

you must correct that problem first. This is
the complete opposite of what most doctors
preach. All these and other problems show
that your body is in a state of chronic inflammation. And inflammation is what causes
virtually every health problem on the planet.

Factors that affect weight loss

Diet. When you eat the French fries from

the local hamburger joint, youre getting
a dose of the same gooey chemical your
dentist uses to take impressions of your
teeth (vinyl polysiloxane, which is highly
toxic and stops the bubbling oil from scalding the workers). A stop at the local pizza
pub gives you a huge helping of MSG, which
causes diabetes, cancer, brain swelling and
fat buildup. The only way to lose the bulge
is to give up the junk and eat a high protein,
high fat, low carb diet. Aim for home
cooking with olive oil, coconut oil or butter.
Thyroid function. Most fat people
are hypothyroid (low function). It often
doesnt take expensive blood tests to diagnose it just look in the mirror. If you
have pronounced dark circles under your
eyes and the outer third of your eyebrows
are thinning, you are probably hypothyroid. This is easily corrected with the proper
supplement.
Your stomach. As we discussed above,
many medications screw up your digestion

and the way your body processes fat. Get

off the pills, get your stomach acid back to
normal and the fat will roll off your body.
Poisons. We live in a world full of chemicals. Theyre in the air, food, water, clothes,
our lawns, cars, etc. Were talking about
stuff like mercury, phthalates, aluminum,
formaldehyde, herbicides, fungicides and
insecticides. Your body cant possibly function normally with all this junk swimming
around in your bloodstream. Detoxification
with the proper supplements will remove
much of this poison. You must then eat as
much organic food as possible to keep it
from building back up.
Inflammation. This is a hugely underrated problem. When your body is chronically inflamed, you are sick. Plain and
simple. Nothing works right. You cannot
possibly lose weight and keep it off. This is
easily corrected with a vitamin and herbal
combination.
Hormones. If you are low on testosterone, youll develop the classic muffin top
(this affects women too). If you correct the
imbalance, your gut will disappear. One
specific herb is very effective for this.
Heredity. While it is true that you can
inherit a slow metabolism, it is not true that
you have to live life being fat. One specific
supplement can prevent the conversion of
sugar in your bloodstream to fat and flush
it out of your body. Herbal treatment can

speed up your digestion.

The bottom line: Your fat is not caused by a
lack of medications or lack of surgery. It is
caused by poor eating practices combined
with lack of exercise and chronic problems
with your body. Healthy people have no
problem staying thin. Unhealthy people
get fat. Live healthy, eat healthy, take care of
yourself and youll stay thin. No gimmicks.
Nothing too difficult. Not expensive to do.
So, the solution to fat is simple: work with
a natural medicine doctor who will get you
off the pills, teach you how to live a healthy
life and correct your ongoing health problems. The pounds will quickly disappear and
never return!

Building

compassion

By Kathi Bloy

he employment world has changed in the last 10 years.

People no longer graduate from high school, find a job in
the local factory and work there until they retire. Today
employers worry about turnover and workers worry about losing
their jobs.
Individuals facing a medical crisis feel especially challenged,
knowing fewer employers will hold positions open for them. An
individual facing illness or injury wonders not only about the
medical outcome, but also about how to pay the bills.
Community Benefit Tree Inc., (CBT) Kaukauna, a non-profit
established to assist in times of medical crisis, relieves some of
the worry by offering financial, emotional and spiritual support.

going as they feel able, and allowing co-workers to take on their
workload and responsibilities. Scheduling meetings and work
hours around treatments, conference calls, and other necessary
absences.

2. Ask what they need

The best way to help your employees is to ask them what their
needs are and how you can help them.

3. Emotional support

Be aware of local resources that offer counseling and support

groups, or establish an Employee Assistance Program that helps
your employees to find local resources. Send cards, flowers, and/
or care packages, and do frequent checkup calls or emails, letting
employees know you are there for them.

4. Financial support

Create PTO programs and allow employees to give their PTO

hours to a co-worker. Create an individual medical fund to which
employees and employer can donate funds, or donate gas cards
for trips to medical appointments.

5. Allow co-worker support

Keep co-workers updated, allow them to share other employees

workloads and organize co-worker support activities. These could
be gifts of time, help with household chores, making meals or
driving them to doctor appointments. Encourage co-workers to
plan a fundraiser either in the office, such as a bake sale, jeans day,
or similar event, or outside, such as a benefit event, a car wash, or
a rummage sale.

6. Job Security

Do whatever it takes to keep their job available until they get back.

7. Benefit checkup

Early in a crisis, help employees analyze insurance benefits to

determine the potential out-of-pocket expenses. Check into the

amount of paid time off they have remaining, and let them know
about any other benefits your company offers that might assist the
employee and their family.
Any of these things, individually or in combination, can make the
medical ordeal easier not only for the employee, but for co-workers and the company as well. Employers who are prepared ahead
of time to deal with medical crises are more likely to retain
employees and keep them engaged, saving money in the long run.
For more tips and additional information, employers can visit
the CBT website: www.communitybenefittree.org. Community
Benefit Tree can also help employers set up an individual medical
fund for tax-deductible donations, or plan a fundraiser. To find

Five simple
ways to
increase
energy
efficiency
and
savings
..........................................................

all and winter can be tough on your home and

your wallet. As temperatures drop, chances are
your furnace will be working overtime. This
results in two things greater energy consumption and higher heating bills. In fact, costs associated
with heating and cooling a home year round typically
comprise two-thirds of the average energy bill.

Try these easy DIY projects to help cut down

on energy loss and expenses:
1. Replace worn weatherstripping around doors and

windows. Worn weatherstripping can create drafts and

let heated air out, stressing your furnace and compromising your comfort. Replacing it takes little time and is a lowcost, high-impact solution.
2. Top up or replace old insulation in your attic. A
poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss.
Also, over time, some types of insulation can settle and
compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Experts
recommend topping up or replacing attic insulation with
a dimensionally stable batt insulation like Roxul Comfortbatt. Aim for an R-value of at least R-50 or a depth of
roughly 16 inches.
3. Insulate basement headers and walls. Uninsulated
38

Natures Pathways | October 2015

basement headers are common, especially in older homes.

They can act as a gateway for heated air to escape. Fixing the
problem is fast and easy. Simply cut Comfortbatt mineral
wool insulation to fit the cavity and compress into place.
Doing this throughout your basement will prevent heat loss
and can potentially save hundreds of dollars each year.
4. Caulk around windows. Cracks and crevices are a
source of heat loss. They can also be an entry point for
water/moisture, as well as for unwelcome insects. Preventative maintenance, such as caulking, can improve energy
efficiency and prevent costly repairs.
5. Change your furnace filter. Make it a point to check
your furnace filter monthly, always changing it when its
dirty. This will improve the performance and efficiency of
your furnace, saving you money.

the best treatment
available for your
jaw
pain?
.........................................................................................
By Alex Minten, PT, DPT, CMTPT

emporomandibular muscle and joint disorder (TMJD) refers

to a group of different diagnoses that can cause unrelenting
pain in the jaw and face. It is more commonly referred to as
TMJ or TMD in the general public. In addition to the presence of
pain, other symptoms can include clicking of the jaw, headaches
and limited opening/closing of ones mouth. As expected these
symptoms can terribly limit a persons ability to function in basic
daily activities such as eating and speaking. TMJD is estimated to
affect 20-30 percent of adults at some point and is more common
in women than men. Unfortunately, TMJD often goes untreated or
undertreated and can become a chronic problem for those affected
by it. Those experiencing TMJD should seek treatment for pain and
other symptoms as soon as possible. The best results are achieved
using a multidisciplinary approach that includes dentists, physical
therapists and sometimes psychologists.
Acute (recent onset) TMJD is most commonly characterized by
pain and sometimes clicking of the jaw. Pain is often attributed to
inflammation and/or muscle spasm or tightness. Clicking of the
jaw is due to a disc within the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
that gets displaced at some point during opening and closing
of a persons mouth. Acute TMJD is often easily treated using a
brief course of anti-inflammatory medication along with activity
modification and sometimes physical therapy to treat secondary
muscle pain. If left untreated, TMJD can progress from painfree clicking to painful clicking of the joint with approximately
5 percent even experiencing locking of the jaw. By catching these
symptoms early people can significantly decrease the amount of
time and energy needed to resolve their pain.
Chronic TMJD is often much more difficult to treat since there
are numerous factors that can contribute to a persons symptoms. Since long-term TMJD can lead to arthritic or degenerative changes of the bones that make up the TMJ, it is still very
important to seek treatment during this stage. Dentists are a critical member of the treatment team for chronic TMJD. Dentists
www.naturespathways.com

perform dental procedures or prescribe splints and other appliances to alleviate stress on the TMJ and other surrounding tissues.
Many people experiencing TMJD will also benefit from physical
therapy intervention. Physical therapists address a persons pain

A message:
hand
delivered
........................................................
By Sharon Paprocki, MAC, NCC, LPC

n any given day in our lives we receive countless

messages. There are phone messages, email messages,
text messages, Facebook messages, Twitter messages,
handwritten messages, message reminders, instant messages, the
messages we are telling ourselves in our head and the list goes
on and on. Our satellite dish body and bio-computer brain are
certainly on the receiving end of a large magnitude of messages.
With all this information clamoring for our attention and needing
to be processed, it raises the question: are we missing some of the
most vital messages of all the messages from our own body,
mind and spirit?
What messages have our bodies been leaving for us that have
gone unopened? The deep sighs as the stress in our lives mounts,
the aches in parts of our body due to sitting behind a desk too

much or standing in the same position at work for long hours,

the headache brought on by the tension in our neck and shoulders or by the less than nutritious food choices we grab on the
go. Emotionally are we ignoring the warning message that our
fuse is getting shorter and our sense of humor is starting to feel
as if it is drying up? Do we notice the message of mental overload (i.e. making simple errors we wouldnt normally make)? Are
we tuning out or putting off the message of feeling scattered and
torn in many directions rather than acknowledging the feeling as
a message from our spirit needing some down time and stillness?
Before disorder and disease become the messengers through
our bodies, minds and spirits, maybe this is the perfect time
for us to assess our own wellness gauge. The National Wellness Institute (www.nationalwellness.org) defines wellness as a

JAW PAIN continued from page 39

from a functional standpoint. In many cases physical therapists

treat not only the jaw but the person as a whole. Physical therapists perform many hands-on techniques including joint mobilization and trigger point therapy to treat TMJD.
In addition to hands-on treatment, physical therapists also
prescribe home exercise to correct impairments and often complete
an ergonomic assessment for postural problems that could be
contributing to pain. Poor posture affects the way that the jaw
moves and places excessive stress on the muscles that we use to hold
our heads up, chew food, etc. If this muscle strain is due to psychological stress that causes a person to clench their jaw, a psychologist can be a very effective member of the treatment team. Many
individuals with TMJD clench their jaw during daily activities or
at night while they are sleeping due to the stresses of their daily life.
If you or someone you know suffers from jaw pain, they may
not be receiving the best available treatment. Patients should seek
evaluation by both their dentist and a physical therapist with
specialized training in treatment of TMJD. These individuals
will effectively work together to treat all factors contributing to a
persons pain.

Wisconsins
Drug
Repository
Program
..........................................................
By Jennifer Semrau

n recognition of Cancer Awareness Month, learn about a little

known program operated by the Wisconsin Department of
Health Services called the Drug Repository Program. With
this program, patients may donate unused, unopened medications and supplies to participating pharmacies or medical facilities. Items will then be given to individuals with cancer or chronic
disease who are underinsured or who do not have insurance.
While this program offers an excellent way to reuse some medications for their intended purpose, a number of restrictions are in
place to ensure safety:
1. The medications/supplies need to be accompanied by a
completed drug repository donor form that is signed by
the donor (or that persons authorized representative).
2. The drug is not adulterated or misbranded. In other words,
the medication cannot be degraded, have been stored
improperly or had something happen to it where the medication is no longer safe to use. In addition, the medication
needs to be labeled correctly. (If the medication is labeled
incorrectly, it is considered misbranded and unsafe to use.)
3. The drug will not expire until at least 90 days after the
donation is made.
4. The drug is in its original, unopened tamper-evident packaging. For this reason, medications received from a pharmacy in a typical amber bottle are not eligible for donation.
Only sealed medication, such as an inhaler sealed in a foil
wrapper or an injectable medication with the manufacture
vial cap intact, are acceptable.
5. Controlled substances (such as morphine, oxycodone or
lorazepam) cannot be donated.
42

Natures Pathways | October 2015

Donated medications/supplies
are then made available to
Wisconsin residents who have
cancer, do not have the means
to pay for the medication and
have a valid prescription.
In addition, there are a limited number of pharmacies and medical
facilities that participate in the program. Further, each location
will determine their specific donation procedures. The Wisconsin
Department of Health Services maintains a list of participating
pharmacies/medical facilities online at https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/guide/cdrparticips.pdf.
Donated medications/supplies are then made available to Wisconsin residents who have cancer, do not have the means to pay for the
medication and have a valid prescription. If the medication cannot
be matched to a Wisconsin resident in need, it may be provided to an
out-of-state resident prior to being slated for disposal. Patients may
be charged a nominal fee of no more than $15 to cover the pharmacies cost of counseling, preparation and documentation required.
While the Wisconsin Drug Repository Program is a worthwhile
program that allows for the reuse of select medications and provides
patients access to the medications they need but could not otherwise afford, many medications are not eligible. The vast majority
of us receive medications in traditional prescription bottles, and
www.naturespathways.com

the reuse of leftover medications from these types of packaging

is prohibited; however, if you have unwanted or expired medications, Wisconsin does have a vast network of medication take back
programs. These programs do not reuse the drugs, but instead
ensure proper disposal. This prevents the flushing of medications
into wastewater treatment systems, which are unequipped to filter
out the drugs and also prevents accidental poisoning or drug diversion from unneeded medications being stored in the home. Medication take back programs, often called drug drops, are typically
located in police department lobbies, providing a safe location and
24/7 access. Drug drops accept prescription and over-the-counter
human and pet medication from household sources (not businesses). Pills, liquids, creams, patches, vials and inhalers are all
accepted. To find a drug drop location near you, go to http://datcp.

Nutrition
for digestive
health
............................................................
By Steve Lankford

igestive problems are one of the

most common health challenges.
There is a wide range of digestive
complaints from gas and bloating to severe
colitis and irritable bowel syndrome.
Gluten sensitivities and food allergies are
becoming more common. In this article I
will focus on supplements that aid digestive wellness and can be used for simple
and/or complex problems. One needs to
play detective in order to discover what

44

Natures Pathways | October 2015

the likely cause of the problem is. This

article is not about what you need to take
in your specific case but rather gives you
an approach to using nutritional supplementation to support digestive health. This
month I will discuss stomach issues, and
next month I will cover intestinal health.
First, identify where your problem
exists. Is it upper gastrointestinal (GI) like
your stomach or throat? Is it lower GI,
meaning small or large intestine? You need

to know your target area.

Second, identify your problem. If you
have a chronic or serious condition you
may have to work with a health care professional. You need to know if there is a disease,
allergy or microbiome imbalance. There are
some common supplements that anyone
with a digestive issue should consider.

The basics of digestive health

The basics of digestive health begin with

digestive enzymes. If you have problems
with food digesting soon after you eat,
you probably need digestive enzymes. If
food sits like a rock after you eat or you
have bloating and burping, you are likely
not digesting food well and a broad based
digestive enzyme would be the supplement to try. You will know in a few days if
enzymes are working for you.
Perhaps the one supplement that everyone can use is probiotics. Probiotics are
the beneficial bacteria that inhabit your
intestinal track. Probiotics benefit your
digestion, immune system, mood, weight
and more. The most common reason for
disruption of your microbiome is the use
of antibiotics. Whenever you use antibiotics you will need to use a therapeutic
quality probiotic to get the good stuff back
into your system. Failure to do this can
have serious consequences if bad bacteria
gets into your system first. Yogurt does not
replace a good probiotic.

and more.

enzymes are good for all foods and others

are specific such as fat digesting enzymes
and so on.

Excess stomach acid

These first two recommendations are

for most people. Everyone should take a
probiotic and use enzymes when needed.
From here, we start to look more closely at
the problems people commonly have.

Belching, bloating and gas

This is a classic sign of a need for digestive enzymes. You take enzymes when you
eat. They will work or not. If they work,
you take them with every meal. Some

There are millions of people who rely on

stomach acid reducing drugs. These drugs
are meant to be used short term, but most
people use them chronically with serious
complications. You should understand
these risks. Some people on these drugs
are actually low on stomach acid and
would benefit from taking a digestive
enzyme with hydrochloric acid. The way
to easily test this for yourself is to take a
small amount of apple cider vinegar and
see if you feel better or worse. If you dont
feel worse, your problem may not be excess
acid. You should pursue this further.
If you do have excess stomach acid then
you need to also protect your stomach
lining. If you have developed ulcers or
have an irritated stomach you have many
choices that can help you. Here are a few
options:
Deglycyrrhizinated licorice, known as
DGL, is known to help heal ulcers. PepZin

GI is zinc carnosine, which helps to heal

and protect the stomach lining. D-limonene can reduce or eliminate heartburn
for up to six months after only three weeks
of use. Aloe vera juice is healing to the
entire digestive tract. If you actually have
excess acid, you may find temporary relief
with acid-neutralizing supplements. These
will typically be calcium with support
nutrients including herbs like slippery
elm. You will have to experiment in order
to discover what works best for you.
These are the most important first
line nutrients you should consider. Next
month I will cover the best nutrients for
intestinal health.

1 teaspoon dried cilantro
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Natures Pathways | October 2015

Put into a large bowl.

In a separate bowl, combine the oil, vinegar, lemon, garlic,
spices and stevia. Mix it up and taste to see if you need to add
anything.
Toss the dressing over the cucumbers and onions and add the
toasted sesame seeds at the end.
Fresh cilantro would be tasty addition with this recipe, as well as
red pepper flakes to add some spice! The recipe tastes great if it
sits for a bit!

herbBLURB

European
elder
Sambucus nigra
.................................................

uropean elder is a tree native to Europe and parts of

Asia and Africa, and it also grows in the United States.
There are several different types of elder, such as American elder, but European elder is the type most often used as
a supplement. Parts of the elder tree such as the berries
and flowers have historically been used for pain, swelling,
infections, coughs and skin conditions. Current folk or traditional uses of elderberry and elder flower include flu,
colds, fevers, constipation and sinus infections.
The dried flowers (elder flower) and
the cooked blue/black berries (elderberry) of the European elder tree
are used in teas, liquid extracts
and capsules.

What the
science says

Although
some
small
studies show that elderberry
may relieve flu symptoms, the
evidence is not strong enough to
support this use of the berry.
A few studies have suggested that a
48

Natures Pathways | October 2015

product containing elder flower and other herbs can help

treat sinus infections when used with antibiotics, but
further research is needed to confirm any benefit.
No reliable information is available on the effectiveness of elderberry and elder flower for other uses.

Side effects and cautions

Uncooked or unripe elderberries are

toxic and cause nausea, vomiting
or severe diarrhea. Only the blue/
black berries of elder are edible.
Because of elder flowers possible diuretic effects, use caution if
