We propose procedures for the contactless determination of Poissons ratio by the methods of phaseshifting interferometry for beams with smooth and rough surfaces and a scheme of experimental installation used for their realization. We also present some results of verification of these procedures for steel
and duralumin beams.
Keywords: Poissons ratio, surface interferogram, surface topography, surface field of displacements.

Poissons ratio (PR) is an important mechanical parameter of isotropic structural materials and, together
with Youngs modulus, completely characterizes their elastic properties [1]. The method of finding PR is based
on the results of measurements of relative longitudinal and lateral strains in the specimen subjected to gradual
or stepwise loading. According to [2, 3], these strains are measured by resistance strain gauges and electric or
mechanical tensometers. For this purpose, we fasten strain gauges to the specimen (the gauges are pasted in
1624 h prior to the tests) and place the specimen in a testing machine. As recording devices for measuring
strains, it is customary to use oscillographs, static-strain gauges, potentiometers, and other instruments with sensitivity not lower than 10 5 relative strain units [2]. However, this procedure of determination of PR is
quite long and expensive. Hence, the aim of the present work is to develop and experimentally check new interferometric procedures used for the contactless determination of the PR of specimens with smooth and rough surfaces.
Jones and Wikes [4] proposed a procedure aimed at the determination of PR on the basis of surface interferograms, which is suitable for beams (plates) with at least one smooth surface. They studied a rectangular plate
with homogeneous cross section rigidly fixed at equal distances from the center with the help of two clamps S1
and S2 and symmetrically loaded by two identical forces at the points P1 and P2 (Fig. 1a). This type of loading is called four-point bending and determines the following components of the surface displacement [5]:
