Dogs. What Can You Do With Them?

Well, if you had been among the
many owners and their dogs who
took part in the Fun Dog Show
in Trimingham on Sunday 13th,
September you could have learned
what it was to take part in all
the different events.
On a lovely warm, but overcast
morning, the team descended
upon the field where eighty
dogs took part.

There were 270 Class Entries and all of

them were fiercely contested.
We spent some time conversing with both
owners and canines, all of whom seemed
to be enjoying themselves enormously as
they took part in the events which included
Prettiest Bitch, Most Like Owner, A
Sausage Race, The Best Brace & The
Waggiest Tail (is it so long ago when I
purchased The Doggy In The Window
and thought it was a pop song?)
and far too many others to list.
The dogs were very well behaved, very
little barking among themselves, and
we thought they were probably better
mannered than any group of politicians
and they travelled from far and wide.

1940s event held
in Sheringham on
the 20th and 21st
of September.
Both events were
well supported by
local people and
holidaymakers alike, making the
hard work by the organisers very
worthwhile, with over 400 raised
by Trimingham Fund Raisers
towards their new Village Hall.
Sheringhams team meanwhile must
be rightly basking in the masses of
praise heaped on them from all those
happy people who were there to
enjoy the atmosphere including
visitors from as far away as
London and Cornwall.

Coastal protection, something which

concerns most of us in beautiful Nth.

frontage, it does not wish to be at
the seaside!)
Mundesleys meeting regarding the
repairs to access to the beach was
well attended but they need to hear
from those who have used the path
for many years. See letter below.
Waveney & Gt Yarmouth councils
have announced that they would be
instigating a plan to protect their
entire coastline.
In Trimingham we are hoping to coordinate with all coastal parishes in
a protection scheme, although we
are more informed than King Canute
it seems we are no more effective!
Hopefully with Waveney and Gt.

Dear Editor,

Dear Editor

Following the meeting in Mundesley Church

rooms on the issue of the footpath to the beach
behind Trafalgar Court, we are appealing for
people who have used the slope on a regular
basis for at least the last twenty years.
We desperately need this information to support
our efforts to have the path reinstated.

Please contact us!

For many years, Nth Walsham has been holding

their own Christmas Lights Switch On, which
brings in the whole town and also others from
surrounding areas. This years event will be on
Sat. 28th November from 2pm - 7pm.
This year will be bigger & better than previous
years with music from Into The Crowd.
We will also see the return of roasted chestnuts
to set everyone in the mood for Christmas.

Following on from the successful publication

of its 2015 calendar portraying scenes of the
twin villages of East & West Runton by Runton
parish History Society, the 2016 edition
is now available.
This again portrays twelve scenes from as
far back as the early 20th century, including
the building of the Newstead Lane railway

Dear Editor,

Below is a photo of my cat Sammy.

He has been missing for many weeks now and

was spotted in the Cromer Country Club area.
If you see him you will know it is him as he is a
large stunning creature, bright blue eyes, stripy
legs and tail, fawn body with the Bengal spots.
The breed is a Marbled Snow Bengal and
nicknamed The snow leopard.
I miss him so much and am desperate for him
to come back to his family where he is very
much loved and cherished.
There is a reward for his return. If you have
any information day or night please phone
me on: 01263 517 001

Thank you for your help.

The Shantymen will make a list of their twenty

four favourite songs & choose the most popular
ones for the CD. For the public to have an input
they are inviting them to choose their favourite
songs from a list of songs they have recorded
on the discography section of their web site
www.shantymen.com and choose.
This has been a wonderful year for us and this
will be a very special show. But I would like
to add some very specific thanks to all of the
guys, some still with us, many who have left,
but to all who travelled this road with us.
We could not have done it without them.
Brian Farrow, Musical Director
Sheringham Shantymen

On Thursday the 24th of September, outside

the Mundesley Coastwatch tower, an award
was presented to Kathryn Moore for her
photograph which was the winner of the
Competition ealier this year.

Dear Editor,

Re your article about the Pan Am Clippers.

The last flights to & from the UK were to Poole
in Dorset and I was at an actual landing of one
of the last flights.

The Entrance to the Clipper.

I also saw the passengers come ashore and go
to the Customs House on the quay side.
Last year I went to Foynes in Ireland where the
flying boats first landed this side of the Atlantic.

Dear Editor,

The Shantymen have been celebrating their 25th

with about forty gigs in their programme and 3
very special gigs, 2 in Sheringham and the last
at the Pier Pavilion Theatre on 6th November.
This will be their final celebratory gig of 2015
and they are really looking forward to it.
They are still planning details but Secretary Dick
Grieve said: We will tell the story of the road
we have travelled over the last 25 years and
include a few well-placed anecdotes from our
resident comedians and I know Keith Skipper
will add his own splendid blend of humour
The Shantymen are keen to show their thanks
to the people of Norfolk who have supported
them over the last 25 years and have come
up with a novel way to show that.
They have decided to give all of the profits from
the Pier show to four local charities one of which
is the RNLI with whom the Shantymen have
always been closely linked. The other three,
which must be Registered Norfolk Charities,
will be picked at random on the night of the
concert from those who have expressed a
written interest.
So they are asking everyone to complete the
form on their web site and send it in.
The Shantymen also plan to make another CD
late this year or early next which will feature
their favourite and most popular songs.

Next Years
Calendar

The Engineers Panel.

They have a museum there with the hull of one
of the Clippers I enclose some pics I took while
on a visit so you can see what they were like.
Yours Faithfully,
J.A.White
Trunch

Her photo of Mundesleys water tower appears

on the front with many wonderful photographs
inside, two for every month of the year which
portray the village or the beach.
This competition has all been sponsored by the
North Walsham branch of Sainsburys.
The delightful calendar is now available at
5.00 and would make a great Christmas
present for anyone who lives in the village,
or for those who dont but should.
The monies raised will go to the Mundesley
Coastwatch, who man the station every
single day of the year.

Dogs and owners came from such remote
outposts of our green & pleasant land like
the rarely visited counties of Lincolnshire
& Essex (rarely visited as compared to
North Norfolk!)

Liz was very grateful to the local dog rescue

groups & trade stands who enhanced the ring
area and Ian of Sams Pets Nth Walsham who
with his camera took a great record of the day.
Alfie, a black Labrador, taking a drink & a rest.
With food and drink being readily available for
both the owners & pooches, the day swung along
nicely with Liz King being Master Of Ceremonies
(or should it be Mistress?) moving through the
events with humour and speed and no dog was
safe from her exhortations.

Winner of Dog Most Like Its Owner - Theo with

owner Angela Chamberlain from Norwich.

French Bulldog Bertha sitting on her

owners knee, Nicky, from Essex.
Special mention should be made of the judges
for the entries: Julie from GSD Rescue in the
first half, and Teresa from Trimingham in the
second. They were both tireless in their
efforts and fair in their judgments.
And the best part of the day was that it raised
400 towards the new Trimingham hall project.
It was a wonderful day and congratulations to
every winner and all who were involved.
Contestant in Most Like Its Owner

Bumper Summer Open For Business!

For Pier Of The Year!

Last Night Of This

Years Pier Show
We left in time to purchase a glass of wine and
enjoy the spectacular views on the ultimate last
night of the Seaside Special Show on the Pier.
The production continues to blend the ingredients
with up to date theatrical & traditional variety
catering for all ages and the show is as usual an
intriguing blend bringing something new with
each season.
Director & Choreographer Di Cooks versatile
approach, Nigel Hobbs strong music base, the
plentiful & multicoloured costumes of Laura
Whyte are all backed up by great scenic
designs, sound and lighting.
We had brilliantly daft costume routines, followed
by Bens marvellous microphone and poor Luke
trying to sing with Ben and Pauls continuous
interruptions - Hilarious. How do they think
of it all!
The team of highly rated entertainers, deserved
our prolonged applause. Its everybodys kind
of fun, music, delightful dancing, all adds life
and vigour to the action, with the stage full
of movement, in a show that sparkles with
cheerfulness and laughter.
We will all welcome The Cromer Pier Christmas
show that commences on November 28th, as
will front row Joe. Such a sweetheart.
With the end of this years Seaside Special
Show, the theatre will be hosting celebrity
entertainment and tribute fun.
The Pier bar and Coffee Reef are open daily
from 10am and your dog/dogs are very
welcome every day.
Stuck for a gift idea, why not give a Seaside
Special Gift Voucher.
Perhaps the Pier and the theatre are Cromer
biggest assets - its a unique attraction.
Cindy Johnson.

What a year it has been for Cromer Pier so far

winner of Pier of the Year 2015 and theatre
category finalist in the Norfolk Arts Awards,
it is bucking the trend where other seaside
pier theatres struggle.
The famous Cromer Pier Show is now the ONLY
End of the Pier show in Europe and shows no
sign of bowing into the shadows. For the second
year running the show has received 5 star reviews
from industry papers, bloggers and local press.
Sales are continuing to climb, with a 14% increase
in 2014, compared to 2013, and this year sales
increased by a further 10%. This summer has
proved to be a bumper year for the Pier with
31,095 tickets sold for the summer show &
2,442 Souvenir Programmes sold.
With 90,891 video views of summer show promo
videos on Facebook, reaching 165,084 users and
just over 23,000 Whippy Ice Creams sold over
the summer months & approx. 7,000 Ronaldo
Ice Cream Tubs bought at the summer show.
On the pier nearly 3,000 crabbing buckets were
sold so far this year each family has one bucket
between them, which makes approx 12,000
visitors crabbing off Cromer Pier.
The staff at the Pier are very proud of being host
to the only end of the pier show in Europe.
The Pier, in general, is an iconic landmark for
the N. Norfolk coast and nostalgia is also a good
reason for their continued success audiences
view the pier and the show as a reminder of
traditional British holidays, before it became
fashionable to holiday abroad good old
fashioned, cheeky, seaside entertainment.
The future does look bright & sparkly, just like
the costumes the shows produce. Jo Artherton
& her team have big plans:We are looking into
hosting weddings, having more theatre tours,
sponsoring of theatre seats and we cant wait
to celebrate 40 years of The Cromer Pier Show
in 2017 where well be planning something
really big and spectacular!
The Cromer Pier Shows Christmas run starts
on November 28th running until 30th December
and is fast becoming one of the top must see
family Christmas shows in Norfolk, not only
for the laugh-out-loud comedy and amazing
dance routines but also as good value for
money. Tickets start from just 10.

The NNDC has announced the re-opening of

Tides restaurant on Cromer Pier.
The restaurant, the box office, gift shop, toilets
and the Pier itself, suffered significant damage
following the storm surge in December 2013.

Work totalling 575,000 has been completed to

make significant structural repairs to the areas
underneath the box office, gift shop, toilets and
restaurant and a full refurbishment programme
of these facilities, with the opening of the
restaurant is now complete.
The iconic pier had already been the subject of
extensive, 1.4million renovation and repair in
the 18 months before the surge struck; work
which potentially saved the structure from
far greater damage.
Tides has been fully refurbished internally
and externally and is now open for business
364 days a year.
The toilets, refurbished by Norfolk-based firm
Thrower & Rutland, have been entered in to
the National Loo of the Year award, judging
will take place at the end of the year.
Tides recently appointed Catering Manager,
Jamie Payne, said: Tides Restaurant is an
amazing venue for anyone to dine in. It has
unique 180 degree views of the coastline,
unrivalled by any restaurant in Cromer.
The size of the fish we serve for our Fish & Chip
meals is the biggest in Cromer, so youll be well
fed when you come and dine with us!
We are launching a new Autumn/Winter menu
at the end of September, where we will offer
10% off for anyone who has bought concert
tickets to any of the autumn shows.
Weve already got our Pre-Theatre Christmas
Menu prepared for those who want to dine at

The crowds were massive and we can only assume
record amounts of people attended, and the
numbers attired in the dresses and uniforms
and civilian dress of the time were
numerous in the extreme.
Street entertainers entertained us with wartime
songs, people danced in the street, the Railway
Station was almost invisible beneath the hordes
gathering on the platforms.
Bands played, shops were decorated and many
people were met and conversed with.

Happiness and good feelings towards the fellow
men & women seemed to be the overwhelming
sentiment, something that needs to be
remembered in a present world of
such disharmony & fractiousness.

The gathered seemed to be saying: We did

it once, we can do it again, we are ready to
defend our islands. And we may have to.
A wonderfully tiring day and congratulations
to all who organised the events.
The 1940s weekend, which we have attended on
many occasions, goes from strength to strength.

Stray Dogs
Members of Animal Magic Dog Club took part
in their Feed a Norfolk Stray Month which
saw the club and its members donate over 200
kilos of dog food to local homeless dogs.

The food was donated to Norfolk Strays, a local

organisation dedicated to saving dogs who find
themselves in the dog pound. Without them, after
seven days, dogs remaining unclaimed would
sadly be put to sleep.
Over the past eighteen months theyve saved
over 200 dogs who are now happily living in
new homes and Animal Magic are delighted
to support such a worthwhile cause.
Norfolk Strays is run by small team of dedicated
volunteers, to find out more about their work
or to make a donation, send an e-mail to:
norfolkstraydogs@gmail.com
or visit their Facebook page: Norfolk Strays
needing urgent rescue spaces.
Pictured above with just a small amount of the
donated food is Tash Rust from Norfolk Strays
with Tia whos licking her lips in the hope that
all this food is for her, with Fiona Leadbetter

Cromer Coast
Protection
The final phase of the 8m scheme will take place
on the seafront from September to March 2016.
The scheme has been designed to maintain the
existing level of defence and to withstand many
years of predicted sea level rise. This final stage
will include work at the west end, the parapet
walls including around the Pier forecourt,
under the Pier and promenade surfacing.
The sea defences at Cromer protect the town
from the force of the North Sea and were built
in various phases as the town expanded, the
earliest dating back to 1836. Over the years,
the walls and groynes have withstood many
storms and have been maintained, enhanced
and repaired as and when required.
The coast protection scheme will reduce the
impact of the sea along the Cromer frontage
as well as helping to maintain a stable beach
in front of the seawalls for future years.
The historical significance of some of the
structures has been carefully taken in to
consideration and the overall character
of the promenade should not change.
Although Pedestrian access to the Pier & Prom.
will remain during the work, parking will be by
license holders only & signage will direct visitors
away from work areas when required.
Cromer will remain open for business and the
engineering operations are a spectacle that can
be viewed from many cliff top vantage points.
Work will not be carried out for the two weeks
over the Christmas holiday period.
NNDC Cabinet Member for Coastal Management,
Angie Fitch-Tillett said: The work we are undertaking now will protect Cromer, its residents,
its businesses and its visitors for many years
to come. Right through the work Cromer
will be very much open for business.

of professionals including Dr Nick Ashton from
the British Museum, who will examine the
different historical aspects of the area and
the biodiversity of the coast.
The second week is half-term week and there will
be events designed for families, such as walks
led by theatre company The Greenword Tree
and a Halloween-themed geocaching walk.
With over 45 events, booking is essential for
each walk as there are a limited number of
places available. Charges will apply.

of the Norfolk Coast Path as part of the festival.
Both events are open to walkers and runners.
The Marathon will begin at Weybourne Village
Hall, the half-marathon starting at Trimingham
Pilgrim Shelter - and both will finish at Sea
Palling Village Hall.
Participants are invited to light up the Autumn
coastline by wearing hi-vis, neon, lights and
all taking part will receive a bespoke medal
upon reaching the finishing line.

The Cromer Coast Protection Project has been

chosen by the Institute of Civil Engineers to be
part of its This is Engineering campaign which
has been designed to bring together construction
projects across the UK to show how civil
engineers shape the world around and
also aims to encourage young people
to consider a career in engineering.

The Dreaded
Stroke

Having a stroke is potentially a very life changing

event. It is a very common disease to experience.
In 2010 approximately 17 million people had
a stroke worldwide. In 2013 stroke was the
second most common cause of death after
heart disease, accounting for 6.4 million
deaths in the world.
When someone has a stroke there is a problem
with the blood supply to the brain and when
this happens cells in the brain begin to die.
There are two common causes for this. Firstly
one of the major blood vessels taking blood to
the brain can be blocked either by a blood clot
or another source of tissue from the body.
Secondly there can be a bleed into the brain
resulting in lack of blood getting to the right
places and blood being in the wrong place.
Sometimes the effects of stroke are not long
lasting & go within 24 hrs. When this happens
the person has had what is called a transient
ischaemic attack (TIA).
There are number of reasons why people are
likely to get strokes. By far the most common
is high blood pressure.
Having high blood pressure causes changes
in your blood vessels that lead to the events
described above that cause strokes.
Other risk factors for stroke include smoking,
diabetes, high cholesterol and being on certain
medications etc. Most of these risk factors are
linked to having an unhealthy lifestyle so you
can see that pursuing a lifestyle which includes
a healthy diet and exercise as well as a lifestyle
free from smoking will reduce your chances
of having a stroke.
Hopefully many of you will not get as far as
having a stroke. However what are the symptoms
to watch out for if somebody is having a stroke?
By far the 3 most common symptoms would be a
change in facial muscle strength & appearance
which may look like someones face dropping,
a change in speech and weakness of the arms
and or the legs.
You may have seen on TV in recent years an
advert promoting FAST which stands for face,
arms, speech and time which is a good way of
both spotting the early symptoms of stroke and

remembering that seeking medical help quickly

by dialling 999, will reduce the chances of long
term damage from a stroke.
For those who do unfortunately have a stroke
or a TIA it will mean a visit to the hospital;
sometimes just for a clinic appointment or
sometimes for an actual stay.
They will have what is called a CT scan of the
brain to diagnosis the type and extent of the
stroke they have experienced.
Once diagnosis has been made the treatment of
stroke is really to allow the brain to recover
through rehabilitation and preventing strokes
from occurring again.
In prevention doctors give stroke patients
medication to reduce the chances of clots
forming again in the brain.
Examples of this would be aspirin, Clopidogrel,
Apixaban & sometimes Warfarin. In prevention
doctors and nurses also spend a lot of time
trying to improve patients blood pressure
control, improve diabetes control and
reduce their cholesterol using statins.
By far the most important thing you can do in
stroke prevention is reduce your chances of
having a stroke NOW.
I would encourage you if you smoke to consider
stopping, take some walks along the lovely
coastland we have in Norfolk and think
about losing weight if your weight is
above what is ideal for your height.
Making change can be a difficult thing but
in the long term be the most beneficial.

Graham Allen
Award

The NNDC Graham Allen Award has been won

by Manor Farm Barns, The Street, Kettlestone.

The barns which lie on the entranceway to the

village, were derelict and in an extremely poor
state of repair and the project involved complete
restoration & refurbishment of the barn complex
into four new dwellings.
The scheme has been extremely successful in
bringing this historic group of barns back into
use and sympathetic use of traditional materials
& detailing has meant the character and original
charm of the barns has been retained.
The Graham Allen Awards 2015 has also seen
the introduction of the Peoples Choice Award
where people at Greenbuild were invited to vote
for their favourite shortlisted development.
Cllr Sue Arnold, Cabinet Member for Planning
said: The level of interest and interaction was
extremely pleasing with the award attracting
over 1000 votes. It would seem the concept of
design & heritage in North Norfolk is close to
peoples hearts.

The Peoples Choice Award was won by the

restoration & conversion of the Grade II Listed
primary school and former field study centre,
The Old School in Wells which also took the
Highly Commended Award.
The primary school built in 1838 was purchased
by Homes for Wells & converted into ten affordable dwellings earmarked for keyworkers and
local families within the town.
The project involved adapting a listed building
for a new use while keeping its original character
and has been extremely successful in providing
affordable housing to meet the needs of the
local community, whilst positively repairing
and securing the long-term conservation
of an important heritage asset.

The complete restoration and conversion of one

of the Districts Buildings at Risk, The Old
Maltings in Letheringsett was Commended
- this project has saved three Grade II Listed
Buildings which were on the brink of collapse.
The Old Maltings has now been fully restored,
providing eight new bespoke dwellings. The
project has found a sustainable new use of the
site and should be noted for the quality of the
workmanship and endeavour shown by the
owners in such challenging circumstances.
