September 27, 2015: Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
What would the Church be without you? Women of strength, fighters, with that spirit of courage which puts you in the front lines
in the proclamation of the Gospel. To you, religious women, sisters and mothers of this people he said I wish to say thank
you, a big thank you and to tell you that I love you very much, said Pope Francis to the crowd gathered at St. Patricks
Cathedral in New York City this week. Our inspiring, holy Pontiff certainly made plenty of headlines this week. It was great that
he acknowledged the great work of the religious sisters. Their work in educating U.S. Catholics has gone a long way to contribute
to the prosperity of Catholics this country. Similar work has been done by the sisters in the area of health care and mission work.
God bless them!
Pope Francis continues to sound themes that resonate with Franciscans. Protecting of the poor and vulnerable, caretaking of the
environment, and showing mercy and reconciliation are three major Franciscan themes that he continues to promote. To my way
of thinking, this remarkable place of St. Anthony Shrine is following right in step.
Our Director of Outreach, Mary Ann Ponti, has great compassion for the poor and does a wonderful job in helping to lead a number
of initiatives to help the poor and vulnerable people of Greater Boston. The flagship ministry in that regard is our Franciscan Food
Center, which provides groceries to 450 needy families a week.
Global Catholic Climate Movement is a new, international organization started to promote Pope Franciss encyclical Laudato Si.
They recently opened their offices here at the Shrine. It is an honor to be working with this high-profile organization that has the
Holy Fathers blessing.
I am happy to work with friars who work so hard in order to reconcile people with God, with the Church, and sometimes with
themselves. Reconciliation happens in the sacrament of that name, but it also happens in many other aspects of the friars work. As
the late Fr. Fergus Healy used to say, it is a privilege to be part of peoples lives in this way.
