Columbus Day Gala ~ DallUva al Vino

The unofficial holiday commemorating ItalianAmerican culture and heritage is Columbus Day,
officially recognized the second Monday in October.
And the Italian Club of Dallas celebrates this special
day at our most elegant evening of the year, our Fall
Gala!

of fine Italian liqueurs goes home with them! And

after dinner those of us with a sweet tooth experience
a taste of heaven on earth at our dessert table, filled
with homemade Italian cookies lovingly baked and
contributed by our Members - or, if you prefer, you can
head straight to the liqueur bar!

Celebrated at the Clubhouse, its a must-attend

event for our Members and guests. The annual theme
sets the tone for the evening ~ from the glamour of
Italian cinema to the majesty of Italys mountains at a
Notte Bianca, Gala attendees eagerly anticipate their
first glimpse of how the distinctive decorations will
set the mood. The evening features a gourmet fivecourse dinner accompanied by fine Italian wines and,
throughout the evening, music and dancing. Theres
no better way to spend time between courses than by
burning off a few calories on the dance floor!

The 2015 Fall Gala will be held on Saturday, October

17 with the theme DallUva al Vino, or From Grapes
to Wine. Our entertainment for the evening will be
provided by DJ Diamond Dave, so be ready to kick off
those high heels and hit the dance floor.

A highlight of the evening is the Silent Auction. A

wide variety of Italian wines, along with gourmet
baskets, art, and much more, are available for bidding.
As the close of the auction nears, the action gets more
intense as bidders try to out-strategize their amici to
ensure that special case of Barolo or the assortment

Plan to spend this magical evening with your amici at

the Italian Club! Reservations are required and can
be made at the Clubhouse or through Eventbrite here.
Event Underwriting and Wine Sponsorship
opportunities are available and are essential in making
the evening a success for the Club. And, of course,
volunteers are always needed to make this event as
special as it can be, so whether your specialty is baking
cookies, decorating, or just lifting and carrying, your

Letter from the President

Ciao a tutti,
My first thoughts as the 4th quarter begins is to say Grazie ancora to
all the members who continue to support our Club each week and each
month, especially throughout the summer.
We have so many wonderful members each week helping in our kitchen,
dining and bar area not to mention the great turn out to help clean
the Club in August. To the committees and volunteer people for the
Cicerone, the special events, the cultural, the membership, the charitable
events, the facilities group, the Festa Italia 2016 and the board of
directors we cant say THANK YOU enough for your continuous support.
During this 4th quarter of the year lets focus on just one month at a
time. October is a very important month for the ICD. This year our
Fall Gala, traditionally our biggest fund raiser, is in October and it is
fast approaching. We are counting on our membership to support
DALLUVA AL VINO on October 17. The success of this Gala
generates the revenues the Club needs to help us through the 4th quarter
and into 2016.

Rain Fails to Dampen the Olympic Spirit

Special Olympians and ICD Volunteers Ignore Rain
What had been forecast as a 20% chance for a passing rain shower instead
became an hours-long area wide downpour. Be that as it may, the rain did
nothing to deter the dedicated Special Olympians and our staunch Italian
Club volunteers from soldiering on and keeping the bocce balls rolling.
Some came prepared with umbrellas and rain gear while others did not.
Regardless, the rain was ignored by all as a mere inconvenience and the
tournament continued although somewhat soggily but uninterrupted.
As always the Special Olympians brought a level of intensity and skill
to todays games that is ever to be greatly admired. Bocce and all the
Special Olympics Tournaments including ones such as Bowling, Softball,
Basketball, Swimming and others mean so very much to the participants
and their families. You see it in the pride in the eyes of the mothers and
fathers of the Special Olympians as they cheer on their sons and daughters.
And you see it in the can do attitude of the Special Olympians themselves.
And all in all thats why theres pride in my eyes for those Italian Club
volunteers who devoted their time and energy to officiate in todays
tournament and my pride in our organization, The Italian Club of Dallas,
for being a supporter of Special Olympics of North Texas.
To Carole and Carlo Strippoli, Carol and Charlie Castellano, Mary Ellen
and John DiTucci, Karen Mungioli, Semira Pacifico, John Pully, Nick
Parigi, Carrie Harris, Dee Mellett and Dottie Parlapiano, Thank You,
Thank You and Thank You.

Ottorino Respighi Empire of Sound

A Celebration of Rome
September 9 we had the great pleasure of having Gigi Norwood from the
Dallas Wind Symphony give a presentation about their upcoming concert
September 15 of the works of Respighi, The Fountains of Rome, The Pines
of Rome and Roman Festivals. She gave a wonderful insight into the music.
The Club was full that night and I hope many of you took advantage of her
discount offer.
My sister Mary and I attended the concert this past September 15 and
enjoyed it tremendously. We ran into John and Hildy Pulley who came
with Toni and Nick Parigi. We all agreed the concert was a thrilling
experience.
Thank you, Gigi, for opening our eyes to one of the great things about
Dallas.

I Colori Italiani and I Piccoli Colori

Our very own Traditional Dance group, I Colori Italiani and I
Piccoli Colori just performed Labor Day weekend on September 6 at
WESTFEST in the town of West, Texas. The event was great and energy
packed. Anna Maria Battaglia and Larissa Chobany came back and joined
us, dancing beautifully as if they had never left. Anna Maria will be in her
second year at the University of Siena. She is home for summer vacation
and came back to dance for this event. Larissa just received her Masters in
Dance Therapy and Counseling and is job hunting.
Our children performed wonderfully and the audience loved them. Other
adults who helped make this a great show were Bill Lombardi, Frank
DiSimone, Andrew Chobany, Carrie Harris and our Director Maria
Chobany.
Our next performance is at the State Fair on October 11. Please come out
and enjoy.

Attention All Club Members

We have a tremendous amount of history in our Club and many
wonderful members who donate their time and money to help spread our
Italian Culture and make this Club a place for all of us to come to enjoy
with our extended familyour membership.
Our purpose is to respect, honor and cherish our history and past
members who have helped build this Club. In addition, we also want
to acknowledge people from our current membership base. We have
many members who give their time and efforts to this Club freely and do
things for the Club because they want to do it. The Club is like family; if
someone needs help we go over to their house and help out.
The Board selected two individuals for this month. We have an open
door policy on nominations so anyone can nominate someone and give
their name to the Board.
Keep in mind there is no specific order or rules to go by here, its just a
simple criteria of saying GRAZIE MILLE to a member who helps make
this Club a better place for this month or since they have been a member.
Ken Venuso
President ICD

A Look Back Grazie Mille

As a Club that stands for Italian culture we have an obligation to honor
and cherish our past. We have a group of individuals who are known as
Founders, lifetime members or long time members.
They helped establish and build the Club. They helped create what we
have today: a Club that is a place to enjoy being around friends and family
and the Italian culture. It is up to our current and future members to learn
from our past and to remember what these individuals created,
THE ITALIAN CLUB OF DALLAS
Once again we are challenged to select someone who was there at the
beginning or at an early stage of the Club or a member we all know,
but our aim is also not to single one person out, because his or her
contributions are greater than someone elses. Our focus is on honoring
and cherishing people from our past or current membership base but in no
specific order.
It is with pride the Board announces as our Honoree this month of A
LOOK BACK

DOMENICK IACOVO
GRAZIE MILLE
The Italian Club was created for
people of Italian heritage to share
their knowledge of Italian culture and
traditions, speak the Italian language
with other members, have fun and above
all be Italian.

Grazie Mille - Member Of The Month

This month the Board wants to recognize a person who loves to read and
made her passion a benefit for many members at the Club. This member
has spent hours reading and researching Italian books for the ICD
Book Club which she began several years ago. Our GRAZIE MILLE
honoree this month is...

Domenick is definitely one of our many

members who loves to sit down and talk
with you about the Italian traditions
and culture. He can go back to his own
family in New Jersey or even further back
to his family ties in Italy.

NORMA IACOVO
I first met Norma on a Wednesday night
when she was conducting one of her
monthly book club meetings. My interest
was to ask her to attend an upcoming New
Membership meeting to talk about the ICD
Book Club.
You could see from those attending the
meeting all eyes and ears were focused on
what Norma had to say. She does a lot
of research on the Italian authors and the
books and makes a personal effort to select
books people would like to read.
She puts together a brochure of the nine books the Club will read during
the year. They have a two-month summer break in July and August and
have the month of December to enjoy the holidays.
It takes a lot of time to put together all this, but that doesnt slow her
down because she helps with articles for the Cicerone and did a great job
introducing the Book Club at the New Membership reception we held.
Norma is another of our wonderful members who is great to sit down
and visit with. She has a great attitude and is always willing to help
or volunteer to help the Club. If you see an empty seat next to her on
Wednesday or a Friday Cena sit down and enjoy a wonderful evening
If you are not part of the Book Club take the time to visit with Norma
next time you see her at the Club and while you are visiting. Say Grazie
Mille for all you do for the members and the Club and continue to do
month after month.
GRAZIE MILLE NORMA

When given the chance, like at New Membership receptions, Domenick

will recall stories how he went to the city where his family is from and
talked about his aunt and other family members and the traditions and
culture they shared with his family. His home town is even the same
home town as Nicola and Livia Tamburinno.
Yes Domenick can share many stories of weddings and other events from
Italy or times with his brothers and sister growing up. If you walk around
the Club and see old photos on the wall just say thanks to Domenick for
putting them up and he will be happy to tell you about them as well.
These Italian values inspire Domenick to be a big supporter of the Club.
He and his wife Norma are Life Time Members and he is one of our past
presidents of the Club. He dedicated one year to focus on just the Italian
Club and helped lead the Club through some challenging times. He still
continues to serve the Club as our legal counsel and offers assistance to
the treasurers and other board members.
Like many of our members Domenick shares that common thread of
strong loyalty to the Club and willingness to help and support what the
Club may need throughout the years.
It has been said many times that the Clubs members become like our
family and we are proud to have Domenick not just for the things he has
done and continues to do for our Club, but more importantly, because he
is family and we count our blessings that he is part of the Italian Club
Family. From all of us at the Italian Club of Dallas,
GRAZIE MILLE
DOMENICK IACOVO

We are rearranging the office space at the club. If anyone has a desk that
they can donate to the cause, please contact Melissa or Francesca via email.

ICD Welcomes Console Generale dItalia

Elena Sgarbi
The Italian Club of Dallas held a
special reception on Sept 8 for Italian
Console Generale Elena Sgarbi at their
Club in Addison. Many members and
Italians attended the reception to meet
the Honorable Elena Sgarbi. It was
her first time in Dallas since becoming
Console Generale last year.
CG Sgarbi was accompanied to the Club by Mary Ann Webster, a member
of the COMITES. Reuben Sonnino, another member of the COMITES,
was in attendance and special committee members Francesca Barone and
Lisa Newman, who are members of the ICD, were at the reception.

CG Elena Sgarbi for a one-on-one visit and of course posing with her for a
photo to cherish the moment.
State Rep. Matt Rinaldi could not be at the reception, but ICD President
Ken Venuso read his letter to CG Sgarbi and the audience. Rep. Rinaldi
wrote about how the Italian Club of Dallas offers so much of the Italian
culture to the Italian community in the Dallas area.
The Club gave CG Elena Sgarbi a special edition of its Festa Italia
brochure which shows many of the activities at the Festa promoting Italian
culture and traditions. Seeing the many pictures of the I Colori dancers
in their beautiful Italian Costumes inspired her to say she wants to attend
Festa Italia 2016.
Grazie to the Italian Console Generale Elena Sgarbi for making Sept
8 a memorable moment for all of us at the Italian Club of Dallas were
comments of all the attendees at the reception.

The reception was hosted by the ICD Board Members Ken Venuso,
President; Carole Strippoli, Vice President; Barbie Gumin, Secretary; and
Paul DiCarlo, Al DeMarzo and Francesca Barone.
Several Past ICD presidents were also at the reception including the
Clubs first president Roberto Agostini, as well as Luigi Mungioli, Maria
Chobany and Ron Miglini.
The reception had an array of Italian appetizers thanks to Jimmys Italian
Food Store from Italian cold cuts to cannoli along with many additional
breads and appetizers prepared by Semira Pacifico, Club manager Melissa
Stoa, and board members Paul DiCarlo and Francesca Barone.
The highlight of the evening was the talk by CG Sgarbi who thanked all
the many attendees for coming after the holiday weekend and how pleased
she was they worked around her schedule so she could be at the Italian
Club that evening.
CG Sgarbi spoke about how important it is to continue to promote and
maintain the Italian culture and traditions from the previous generations
who brought them from Italy. Just as important is how the Italians of today
in Dallas have embraced these traditions and incorporated them into their
life styles and are shown through the special events and festivals put on by
the Italian Club of Dallas.
For those in attendance, they had the pleasure of sitting down with the

Member News
Diane Caneva lost her Mother, Lillian Caneva, on Sept 12. Please
remember the Caneva family in your prayers.
Lena and Joe Jackson have had their ups and downs. Joe appeared at the
Club one Cena to pick up some take out. He looked good.
Joe and Camille Manginelli are both dealing with health issues.
Bea Dixon, a long time previous member, has been fighting a problem with
her eyes.
Francesca Barone is recovering from foot surgery. You would never know,
because she is a constant at the Club! She is always pitching in for cooking
and other needs.
Many of you remember Frank and Marie Frontario who were long time
members until they moved to Florida. Recently Marie fell and broke a foot
which required a cast. She is still determined to enjoy the cruise they had
planned.
Give these members a call to let them know we miss them and hope they
are soon back at the Italian Club with us. Except Francesca who must have
a cot in the back, because she is always there.

CHICKPEAS SOUP
Ingredients:
1 1/8 pounds (500 g) chickpeas
A bay leaf
A clove of garlic finely chopped
small onion
cup of celery finely chopped
1 tbsp fresh Italian parsley
cup of olive oil
Pinch of salt
Pinch of black pepper
Chicken stock as needed (optional)
A pinch of sodium bicarbonate (optional)
Directions:
Soak the chickpeas overnight in lightly salted water, adding a pinch of sodium bicarbonate if you want -- it hastens
the cooking of the chickpeas, but leaves an aftertaste many find offputting. Drain the beans and put them in a pot with
fresh water to cover and simmer for hour. Drain of the water only if you will add chicken stock. Add a little salt,
the bay leaf, the clove of garlic, chopped celery, chopped onion, parsley and olive oil. Cover and simmer for at least two
hours, or until the chickpeas are soft.

Nonni E Nipoti
Wow! Great Fun!
Grandparents night was amazingly fun for
Nonni e Nipoti.
Jordan Neal with her Love to Cook apron
working at the pasta machine making
tagliatelle while Nolan and Wyatt Strippoli
showed off the finished product.
Once finished with pasta making they
eagerly tackle the learning of making
Italian meat balls. What a Success!

Wyatt showing his hard work

Time to make

Nonno Carlo getting a sweat to keep up

with Nolan and Wyatt under the eyeful
watch of Nonna Carole

That was hard work but very satisfying;

they got to take their finished product
home to share with their parents. SO
PROUD!!!!!
After the hard work, time to play and
show Nonno Carlo who is the best in
bigliardino, and of course the Champions
were Nolan and Wyatt.
Jordan was our youngest Champion and
showed off a few moves to all of us.
What a great evening! Thank you to all!
