3rd Quarter Project for AP Psychology: FRQ Practice

Worth 100 points/70% of 2nd Quarter Grade (Due: March 21st)


Requirements:
You are to thoroughly answer the following FRQs; each response should address all terms/concepts in order to receive full credit for each
response. Each response should have enough details that will allow your response to be at least a full page (you may handwrite or type
these12 point font, double-spaced)
By answering only one FRQ, the HIGHEST grade you could possibly earn would be a 60%. Each FRQ after that is worth 10%
more, so in order to receive a 100% you must answer 5 FRQs . You may complete one additional FRQ for 5 bonus points, but I
will cap your points at 105/100.
Be sure to highlight/underline necessary terms/concepts within your responses!

FRQ #1 (Unit 3A, page 65):


Explain how information travels in the nervous system, both within the neurons, and between neurons.
FRQ #2: (Unit 3B, page 93):
You have been hired to write and direct short, educational films covering a variety of brain injuries. In five short paragraphs, explain five
ideas you have for scripts. In each case, create a character who has suffered a brain injury. Include the name of the brain part injured
and a description of the loss of the function that occurs as a result of that injury.
FRQ #3 (Unit 3C, page 113):
Explain the difference between fraternal and identical twins. How do twin studies help us understand the effects of nature and nurture?
FRQ #4: (Unit 8B, page 409):
A friend approaches you, clearly down in the dumps and expresses a desire to be happier. Given your understanding of well-being,
what advice can you give your friend?
FRQ #5 (Unit 9, page 477):
Explain the stage theories of Jean Piaget, Erik Erikson, and Lawrence Kohlberg. Include a valid criticism of each.
FRQ #6: (Unit 10, page 521):
Explain the relationship of the following as they relate to well-being: self-serving bias, self-esteem, locus of control, selfactualization, & reciprocal determinism
FRQ #7 (Unit 4, not in the book):
A soldier is assigned to keep watch over his base camp at night. If he detects any signs of trouble he is to report it to his commanding
officer. If he does not detect an intruder in time, he and his fellow soldiers may be attacked. Define each of the following structures /
concepts and describe how each would apply to the soldier's ability to do his job: signal detection theory, rods, occipital lobe,
cochlea, conduction deafness, retinal disparity, absolute threshold.
FRQ #8 (Unit 6, not in the book):
Part 1: Last week, Stacy brought home two dogs from the animal shelter: Pavlov and Spot. Pavlov is 3 years old and already
understands and is able to follow a few commands: sit, come, stay, and roll over. Spot doesnt know those commands, so Stacy is
going to try and teach him. Use each of the following concepts to help her understand how to train Spot so he can do the same things
as Pavlov: modeling, reinforcement, extrinsic motivation, schedule of reinforcement, discrimination.
Part 2: Spot also has some bad habits that Pavlov does not demonstrate. Use the following concepts to help Stacy understand how to
keep Spot from begging for food when she and her family sit down at the table to eat dinner: Aversive conditioning & extinction

FRQ #9 (Unit 7A, not in book):

Kate has a big psychology test coming up tomorrow. She and several classmates get together to do some final studying. Discuss how
each of the following concepts may help or hinder Kate and her classmates during their study session and subsequent testing
experience: short term memory capacity, serial position effect, spacing effect, misinformation effect, forgetting curve,
semantic versus visual encoding
FRQ #10 (Unit 7B, not in book):
Language researchers agree that our language development progresses from babbling to the one-word stage through the two-word,
telegraphic speech stage. However, Researchers have disagreed about how we acquire language and move from stage to stage.
Part 1: Provide an example of language acquisition that supports the claim that we acquire language through operant conditioning:
positive reinforcement, shaping, intermittent reinforcement
Part 2: Provide an example of language acquisition that supports the claim that we acquire language because of Chomsky's "inborn
universal grammar" theory. Your example should use the following ideas in the correct context: language acquisition device,
universal grammar, & overgeneralization
Part 3: Provide an example the supports the claim there is a critical period in language development

FRQ #11 (Unit 11, page 559):
Assume you are going to develop a new test to predict job success for aspiring novelists. Consider how each of the following concepts
relates to your task, and describe how you would attempt to accomplish each for your new test: content validity, predictive validity,
standardization, reliability
FRQ #12 (Unit 12, page 603):
Using specific examples, explain the role of the following in either the alleviation or the development of depression: genetics,
explanatory style, alcohol, psychotherapy, drug therapy
