IELTS INTENSIVE PROGRAMME AND WORKSHOP
COURSE DESCRIPTION

The duration that is being proposed for the IELTS Intensive Programme is for 18 weeks (72 training
hours). The methodology of learning is designed to simulate and develop habits of lifelong learning.
Learners will be allocated tutorial time of four to six hours per week for direct contact with a tutor of
IELTS. This course is not only excellent for the way it teaches the student, in the task-based
communicative approach, but it's also excellent in that the subject matter of the activities are subjects
similar to the IELTS test.
The Intensive Workshop will be an additional feature. It will provide an overview of the different
components of the test and look at examination strategies and preparation tips. Learners will have
exam practice sessions using past IELTS papers. They learn IELTS exam techniques and strategies for
achieving the best possible result.

The Listening Module has four section of increasing difficulty, with a total of 40 questions, and takes
about 30 minutes. Each section has 10 questions and is heard only once.
AIMS
- To guide participants in identifying key words, inferring answers from questions, guessing answers by
word associations.
- To enhance their listening skills to enable them to answer appropriately within the time limit given
during the test.
- To prepare students and help become familiar with the listening format of IELTS.
- To increase students vocabulary to help them cope with the intensity of the listening test.
- To help students acquire a strong foundation in listening strategies.
OBJECTIVES
- Participants are made aware of what will be required from them to obtain the band score aimed at.
- Participants are made aware of the kind of tasks they will encounter during the listening test.
- Participants will be able to understand spoken language in a variety of social and academic contexts.
- Participants will be able to listen for specific information, main ideas and supporting information as
well as understanding the speakers opinion.

THE ACADEMIC WRITING COMPONENT


The Academic Reading Module has three reading passages, and a total of 40 questions to be answered
in one hour. The first two reading passages have 13 questions each and the last one has 14 questions.
The total length of the three passages is between 2,000 and 2,750 words.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES


This course focuses on the essential language macro-skill of reading, and will enhance the English
language proficiency of learners, particularly students enrolled in diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate courses, who do not yet have the required proficiency in the English language, to cope with
tertiary studies. This course will also develop their proficiency to cope with university entrance tests.
The course materials (handouts and worksheets) are carefully selected, sequenced, and are taught using
effective methodology. The comprehension exercises and classroom activities are designed to help
learners apply and reinforce what they have learnt.
After completing this course, learners should be able to demonstrate the following competence:
- able to extract information and fully comprehend the contents of documents, textbooks, and lecture
notes

Brief description
Each lesson provides vocabulary exercises that suggest ways of coping with
new words. Other topics covered include word-formation using suffixes and
prefixes, words which are commonly confused, and the way in which certain
words are restricted to formal or informal use.
Note-taking and note-making and story and recording new vocabulary. It also
emphasizes the effective use of an English monolingual dictionary so that the
learner can take full advantage of the range of the resources available. The
Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English is highly recommended.

Progress tests on reading skills will be given periodically, with texts
of increasing length and complexity.
All the topics are of general interest. They deal with issues which
are interesting, recognisably appropriate and accessible to
candidates entering undergraduate or postgraduate courses or

THE
ACADEMIC WRITING COMPONENT
The Writing Module consists of two different writing tasks and the whole paper takes one hour. Task 1
must be a minimum of 150 words and Task 2 must be at least 250 words and carries two thirds of the
task.
AIMS
- To guide participants to express themselves in written English on a variety of general and
abstract topics, in formal academic writing style in order to prepare them to undertake further studies
where English is the main medium of instruction and learning.
- To enhance their writing skills to enable them to write coherent and cohesive essays.
- To be able to write more effortlessly.
OBJECTIVES
- Participants are made aware of their fluency and coherence to link ideas to write coherent
connected essays.
- Participants are able to use accurate and appropriate grammar, punctuation, sentence structures and
vocabulary.
- To be knowledgeable on general topics and current issues.
- To be able to comprehend, interpret, analyse and describe data and express their opinions clearly and
confidently in writing.
- Practise questions from pass IELTS exam papers Task 1 and 2 to familiarise themselves with the
exam format and requirements.

Task 1

Brief description
Writing a description based on material in a chart, table, graph or diagram and
demonstrating the ability to present information and to summarise the most important
and relevant data. At least 150 words.

Familiarizing participants with Task 1 requirements:

Writing in the correct style and register
To expose participants to IELTS Task 1 oriented writing activities with focus on
developing the skills above.
To complement the Task 1 writing component and enhance the skills of
participants with exercises on grammar and vocabulary
Task 2

Writing an essay in response to a statement or question to demonstrate an ability to


present a position, construct an argument and discuss abstract issues. At least 250
words.
Preparing participants to express their views in writing on a variety of general topics in
a cohesive, coherent and comprehensible way
To develop argumentative and discursive academic writing skills in view of future
writing needs when participants embark on post-graduate studies
To complement the Task 2 writing component and enhance the skills of participants
with exercises on grammar, vocabulary and connective devices
To cultivate good writing habits i.e. planning, researching, self-editing.

THE SPEAKING COMPONENT
The speaking test has three parts :

You give a one-to-two-minute talk, based on your own experience, on a
