1. Analyse the many things that Frederic does during his

typical day. You should group these in terms of the
five categories below, and provide a full list of
subcategories for each:

Strategic :
(Managing Human resources well)
Spotted a guard missing from one of the conveyor drives. Plant Engineer arranging
replacement this morning temporary guard put in place immediately
Involves less greater supervisory interventions
Forecast requirements are looked up before the start of the meetings
Initiating the concept of the robotization for final packing
Detailing the need for the capital requirement for new equipment needed over the next two
years

Design
Requirement for new process control for improving the bread quality
Incorporating variables of the statistical process control (SPC) for several variables (weight,
dimensions, moisture content) and attributes (colour, appearance, crustiness). This is much
more demanding than the specification of any other customer.
Making CHOICE BETWEEN the adoption of a design etween the high and slow speed
machines
Finding the possible locations for placing packing robots

Planning and control

Arranged for Pierre Moulin (the Quality Manager) to investigate root cause and to
report back later.
Arranging a meeting with a purchasing manager regarding unavailability of the apricots
Arranging a meeting with the department heads to review the performance
Addressing the issues when preparing the next operations strategy report.

Improvement
Bringing the teams attention to the apparently increasing levels of spilt materials
(on the floor) observed on the morning tour and arranged a team would be formed
to look at underlying causes of such waste.
Undertaking measures to improve and train staffs to get full benefits of SPC
Considering capacity expansion in the freezer rooms

Other (specify)
Convincing : Convinced the dept heads that their role would gradually change with much of their
involvement and attention to critical details.
Decision Making : . Ability to take a decision to arrange a meeting with the Industrial Engineer and
production supervisors to discuss the issues and potential solutions

that is spent on long-term and on short-term issues.

other industries (for example, banking, leisure,
automotive component manufacture)?

packing lines.
Spending one hour in a meeting with technical representative to understand the
flexibility of the proposed robot packers.
One hour twenty minutes spent on another tour of the factory to look at SPC charts in
each department because there was some evidence that these were not being used
correctly.
Forty-five minutes spent on a scheduled meeting with Charles Lamouche, Marketing
Director, and Sara Lepont, Product Development Manager, concerning development
of a new range of mini patisseries.
Much of his time is spent on long term issues

acquisition decisions? What are his main concerns when
evaluating the capability of new equipment?

will increase efficiency as well as decrease the labour cost.
Investing in another line will avoid a delivery problems.
Arranged a meeting with the IT consultant and production team for implementation of
material requirement planning system within ERP project.
He thought of purchasing new equipment as there was potential growth in demand of
mini pastries.
Equipment was expensive that would limit the future flexibility of equipment. he was
concerned about flexibility of new robot packers. first was high speed machines and
second was slower machines.

4. What main human resource issues are an important

part of Frederics activities?
Regular request for extra staff to run the third line at weekend.
Spotted a guard missing from one of the conveyer drives, plant engineer arranging
temporary guard put in place immediately.

increase the production and reduce the delivery problems.
