If you find these sentences difficult, it may mean that you need to practice
using a dictionary more often, or you need to buy yourself a better dictionary.
3.1 Use the dictionary to find/check the answers to the questions
1. What does dreadful mean?
The meaning of dreadful is inspiring dread, bad, awful, frightful, shocking;
terrible.2. How do you pronounce lose? (Is it the same as choose or chose?)

3.2 When you look up a word, you can also use your dictionary to increase your
vocabulary by learning related words and phrases. Find out if your dictionary
helps you to answer these questions, also about words from the opposite page.
1. Choose is a verb, but what is the noun with the same meaning?
Choice is the noun with the same meaning.
2. Advice is a noun, but what is the verb with the same meaning?
The verb with the same meaning of advice is advise.

3. Advice is also uncountable, but you can make it countable using another
word. Can you complete the sentences: He gave me a very useful piece of
advice
4. What adjective is formed from chaos?
The adjective formed from chaos is chaotic.
5. What the opposite of dirty?
The opposite of dirty is clean.
6. What is the difference between homework and housework?
The difference between homework and house work is:
-Homework refers to task assigned to students by teachers to be completed
mostly outside of class, and derives its name from the fact that most students
do to majority of such work at home.
-Housework refers to domestic household chores suck as cleaning and cooking.
7. What is the opposite of lose a game?
The opposite of lose a game is win a game.
8. What is the opposite of lose weight?
The opposite of lose weight is gain weight.
9. Law often appears in the phrase law and What is the missing word?
The missing word is order.
10. If you want to sit at a table in a cafe and you see that one person is sitting
there already, but another scat is empty, what can you say to the person sitting
down?

Using the dictionary


The definition or definitions of the word or phrase. Generally dictionaries group
the definitions according to a word's use as a noun, verb, adjective, and/or
adverb.
The word or phrase with the pronunciation indicated through the use of
diacritical marks - marks that indicate the vowel sounds such as a long vowel
or a vowel affected by other sounds; accent marks, a mark called the schwa
that tells you that the vowel is in an unaccented syllable of the word.
The origin, or etymology, of the word or words, such as from the Latin, Old
French, Middle English, Hebrew, the name of a person. Some dictionaries use
the symbol < to mean "came from.".
Related forms of the word, such as the plural form of nouns and the past tense
of verbs.
