Scientific activity
The Department of Internal Combustion Engines
was founded in 2007. The research areas of interest include but are not limited to the analysis of mechanical losses of internal combustion engines, their
contact surfaces, and auxiliary equipments as well as
decreasing the mechanical losses of internal combustion engines.
The conditions for the R&D are ensured by the following laboratories and testing equipment:
A dynamometer capable for the testing gasoline
and diesel engines, their full-scale examination,
as well as for the automatic execution of preprogrammed test cycles and the evaluation, analysis
of the test results.
A radionuclide (RNT) wear measurement system,
which makes high-accuracy and fast online meas-

urement of wear in internal combustion engine

possible.
Tribotest equipment, which helps to perform basic
and applied research regarding wear and friction
of the material of contacting components and also
in defining optimal lubrication conditions.
Modern electronic microscopes for the examination of the effect of the manufacturing and wear
processes on surface structures.
Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) equipment for
the analysis and optimization of the flow processes
in the engine.
A thermal camera for the examination of the distribution of surface temperature.
A high-speed camera for the exploration and analysis of the dynamic behaviour of driving systems (Vbelt or chain drive, valve control, etc.).
